y'know what, i agree! mixing is complicated, and beginners need a starting point! but i'm not saying "just do whaever lol." what i'm saying is, most of the advice you'll get in places like r/edmproduction is really unhelpful for beginners

telling someone "your kick should peak at -7 dB" is about as useful as saying "always add 1 tablespoon of salt, no matter what you're cooking or how much." that doesn't improve your mix, and it doesn't help you learn how much "salt" will taste right

overly prescriptive guides and cheat sheets for EQ, panning, etc are worse than useless. they're just bad recipes for a dish you're not making. the people who tell you to blindly copy specific EQ curves or plugin settings cannot hear your mix.

the only way to improve your mixing is to train your ears. seriously, do some ear training exercises. here's a few:

put a bandpass filter on a few different audio sources (a full song, white noise, a snare drum, etc) and listen to different parts of the frequency spectrum individually. this makes it easier to hear which parts of your mix need to be boosted or cut

pull up your EQ and sweep a boost or cut around on a full mix (or a reference mix). take note of how this changes the overall character of the sound. see if you can hear any unpleasant sounds pop out

pick one element of your mix and turn it all the way down. now bring it up slowly, until it sits well with everything around it. this can help prevent you from making your snare too fucking loud like you usually do

from 0, slowly turn up the mix knob on just one effect. try this on your whole mix, try it on a single channel, try it with different effects. this can teach you how to add those subtle touches that add depth and character, which separate a good mix from a great one

try all of the above with your eyes closed

mix with a spectrogram on screen, so your eyes can double check your ears. FL has one built in, but melda makes a free one if your DAW doesn't have it. try to make the spectrogram almost flat all the way across, with a slight roll off at the high end. obviously, don't just mix with your eyes. but if you're new, this helps you see potential problems so you can track them down with an EQ

i could tell you to add an EQ cut from 5k to 12k. but it's much more useful to teach you what a 5k-12k cut does, and how to hear it. then you can apply it when you actually need it. yes, you do ultimately need to use your ears and decide for yourself if it sounds good. but that doesn't mean you need to start from scratch and learn by brute force

YOU CAN LEARN THIS STUFF. it can become second nature. i believe in you. but overly prescriptive guides will not help you. they will make you learn slower.

"always make your kicks and snares mono" or

"always pan your hi hats 20% left and just leave them there" or

that reddit-ass, rick beato-ass copypasta shit does not help anyone make good music, least of all electronic music. in modern music, you need to include variations in panning, volume, and timbre. and it's fucking absurd to me that people are passing this stuff around like it's common sense

this type of advice is based on the idea that you should approach every mix in exactly the same way. you should mix your deconstructed club track in exactly the same way that you would mix a nickelback album. there's only one Right Way to mix, and it was invented in 1969 by some shitty oldhead rock producer. you should all be ashamed

Main Windows Settings 1-Channel Rack Settings . The #Channel_Rack holds #instruments that create sound and internal generators that control automation. Every pattern has access to all instruments in the rack. In other words, all patterns play from the same set of instruments. Patterns are not limited to a single instrument as they are in most other sequencers. Music data can come in the form of Step sequences and Piano roll scores. There is one Channel button (no.9) per instrument. The audio from each Channel is sent to one of the Mixer Tracks for effects processing and level mixing. When Instrument Channels are added or removed from the project the height of the Channel Rack will change dynamically. The Channel buttons also access Instrument Channel Settings (where a Mixer track is set) or the associated Piano roll. The Step Sequencer, is a pattern-based grid sequencer ideal for creating drum loops and simple melodies. The note and automation data visible across all Channels is known as a 'pattern'. Patterns include Piano roll, Step Sequencer and Automation data. Switch between patterns using the Pattern selector (No.16) shown below. As the pattern number is changed, note how the pattern data visible in the Channel Rack also changes, reflecting the selected pattern.
