I figured I should try to go out with at least one jam session, after so long of silence. And I got a few new toys. I'm only showing half of the new toys in this one, since I haven't had a chance to really get to play with the other two much yet. The new effects pedal is great, but unfortunately the decade-plus old laptop that's running OBS and the super cheap camera attached to it aren't exactly up to snuff, so there are a few audio and visual glitches in this one. Which kind of fits the slightly low-fi feel I was going for with this one.
I mentioned in a previous post, the few things I still felt like I needed for my setup were an FM synth, an analog or decent analog-emulation synth with more than one oscillator, and some better live effects that didn't require me to run things through the computer.
Right around my birthday, the Behringer Model D went on sale. So I got it for myself as a birthday present. And then I decided that with the chip shortage being a good excuse for everybody to raise prices, synths weren't going be getting any cheaper. Out of the two FM synths I was looking at, one had jumped up from 200 bucks to 240, and the other had jumped from 300 to 450. Pretty much overnight. So I said screw it, and bought the cheaper one. So there's a Sonicware Liven XFM just out of sight of the camera to my left that I've dabbled with, but I'm not comfortable enough to use it as a groovebox live yet. And I got a gift certificate to Sweetwater for Yule, and the Zoom MS 70 effects pedal, which is pretty much a staple for dawless jammers these days, was on sale. So I grabbed that and another cheaper spare pedal that had some basic effects and stereo input and output.
After about 5 minutes, I figured out pretty dang quickly why it's become such a staple for synth players. Because holy carp, it's versatile and you definitely get a lot out of it. I was trying to make things massive, but not hugely stretched and echoed because that would have made the drum sounds pretty muddy. I think it ended up with a pretty epic sound, with the three oscillators of the Model D all on different octaves, and the constant switching and playing with the sounds of the MS-1.
Well, this might be the last thing I post in 2022. The last three years feel like they've been the longest decade of my life. Let's hope things get less bad in the year to come.

Audio
Palintropos Harmonie by present/absent
The administrative staff received an anonymous tip regarding a label called important drone records from Spain. This tip was lost during an attempt at a hostile takeover of dystopiker’s Experimental Sound Laboratory, LP. by a venture capitalist firm. Through skillful work of hired law firm, the whole ordeal was ousted and the unnamed venture capitalist firm walked away with a big loss.
Furthermore, the staff of dystopiker’s box of esoterica can’t confirm that this did or did not happen. But it must be said that this blog, nor its vast network of subsidiaries will never dwindle to capitalist forces.
In any case, and far away from above mentioned debacle, this tip re-emerged after an inventory of the archives. With a label named important drone records, it raised the eye brows of one senior members of the staff.
It did not take much investigation before the track παλίντροπος I was being played on the loudspeakers in the office, creating a confusion at first among the staff.
Confusion that quickly led to interest and soon the staff gathered around the set of loudspeakers to listen, and to discuss how it could be possible that no one had heard this particular piece before despite decades of researching the subject of drone music. All the while the aforementioned senior staff member had a wide grin across his face.
“It actually is true drone.” someone exclaimed quite befuddled.
It is no secret that dystopiker’s box of esoterica started off as a drone-specific blog and over time widened its view to feature other experimental music that fits the definition of esoterica. This change of direction with the blog have been the subject of frustration among the investigative department that was sure there were more than enough drone music to be found to run the blog for decades to come. However, they also agreed that the amount of leads received that left them empty-handed was a concern and thus agreed to widen their efforts to non-drone music.
With this tip, cheers could be heard from the investigative department and after having listened through the entire Palintropos Harmonie, they could be seen exiting the building together for a celebratory drink at the tavern across the street.
Not much needs to be said about Palintropis Harmonie. It simply is pretenseless drone music. There’s depth, space and movement, all breathing inside the same droning atmosphere. You’ll find no unsolicited melody creeping in the background, no sudden appearance of sound that jumps at you like a distressing Jack-in-the-Box.
This is not a criticism of other works of drone music. Vague melodies and unusual introductions of sounds can have their place. But the surprising aspects of a drone composition should be the quality of its entirety. The work should speak for itself, in its long-form self.
The staff of dystopiker’s box of esoterica would like to kindly thank the anonymous tip received that made this feature possible. Please, do not hesitate to submit your own music or a tip of other people’s music to the blog. Regardless if it is drone or other forms of experimental music that might fit the blog’s theme, it will be considered by the board of review.

I've been staring at this kit for nearly two weeks now and it's a miracle I haven't opened it and lost any of the tiny pieces!!!
I'll be building this kit, Wednesday afternoon, on my twitch channel.
Tumblr media
This is also probably the last kit that I'm going to be doing for a while, I'm going to be taking an indefinite hiatus from DIY kits for a few months while I continue to raise the money to move to a different state.
I've had a really fun time pursuing these projects and feel that I've learned a lot and i'm so grateful to my community, friends, and family that have supported me to this point. I'm excited to start back as soon as I get unpacked in whatever new place I end up.
I will continue to stream occasionally, so if you'd like to catch me live or of you'd like to support me further, follow me at twitch.tv/izzgoo

My Behringer MS-1

After a couple months of blah, I decided to actually do some experimenting with my instruments. Something I hadn’t really been doing lately.
One of the analog synth sounds that I absolutely love is the sound of two oscillators together, slightly out of phase with each other. It adds a certain natural shimmer and life to the sound that just isn’t there with a single oscillator, no matter how nice that instrument may sound.
The problem is - I don’t have any analog instruments with more than one oscillator. So I set the Behringer MS-1 and Crave to the same channel and set them both to make that lovely horn-like sawtooth wave with a low filter that is so iconic, and instead of using the Novation Circuit Tracks as a sequencer, I just used it as a MIDI controller and an audio mixer to add another layer of reverb to the two instruments. I whipped up a quick pretty loop on the Yamaha CS Reface (ironic that I was using the CS in this track, since the most popular use of the double-oscillator filtered sawtooth sound is from the classic CS-80 in so many 80s and 90s soundtracks) and just started recording. And just to emphasize the subtle difference between one and two oscillators, I occasionally played the MS-1 directly, just to get a plainer, more straightforward hornlike sound in some parts, and I cranked up the filter FM a few times to get some deeper bass rumble mixed in.
No real plan going in. Just a pleasant loop, two synthesizers acting together as one, and a lot of delay and reverb. I would say that was a successful test... but I still want to get my hands on an analog synth with more than one oscillator at some point.
