the Underworld is the only godly realm that was built on capitalism

So what's Olympus built on? Socialism? Are the gods and nymphs there living the good life compared to their underworld counterparts? Are Zeus and Hera good monarchs even if they're not good people? Or is it just bad in a different way?

Olympus does still participate in capitalism to a degree (especially considering that they do a lot of buying and selling between the Underworld, ex. Kore isn't the only one who travels for work between realms) but the realm was originally built on offerings and bartering which is a tradition that's still maintained between the gods themselves - and it's a big reason why they care for the mortals at all, because without their prayers and offerings, the entire foundation of their realm and the gods' status as rulers would crumble.

So in that way, the gods in power - aside from Hades who is an exception we'll touch on in a second - don't really care about the societal institutions of money, because money just doesn't really serve any function for them that the mortals' offerings - and their own abilities as gods - aren't already providing them. The capitalist system that exists in Olympus is more so to serve the residents who aren't being actively worshipped, such as the nymphs and satyrs (though some are lucky to gain recognition in ways that benefits them through offerings) and for budding gods who don't have as much influence in the Mortal Realm yet (such as Kore).

That said, there are plenty of complaints to be made about Hera and Zeus regardless of the economy that exists within Olympus, buuuut we'll be getting into those issues later ;3 As for the quality of life of Olympus vs. the Underworld, there are pros and cons to both, as with any economic system. The Underworld has a bit of a steeper divide between the rich and poor, but living in Olympus comes with the caveats of being in Zeus' territory where life can be... unpredictable, to say the least. BUT the Underworld being built on the free market has provided it with unique advantages through their technological advancements (ex. the existence of cars and cellphones in both realms is largely owed to the Underworld); whereas Olympus has greater access to the resources of the gods themselves due to literally being the home of the King of the Gods who everyone tries to keep in their good graces.

We've seen a mini example of this bartering system already back in Episode 56: Hera telling Kore she was going to help her with her garden wasn't just the Queen dishing out orders, she was telling Kore that gardening would be a sufficient enough trade for having her in her home and feeding her.

She's not offering to feed Kore for free (which WOULD be an honor coming from the Queen), she's telling her "I'll provide you with the company of royalty and good food / wine / etc. in exchange for your gardening services." (that said, it is still sort of a high honor in and of itself considering Hera wouldn't let just anyone tend to her property ;3)

But that brings us to the exception - Hades. The Underworld had to be built on a different system due to many of its gods and goddesses not being commonly worshipped, so offerings and tributes were hard to come by. For Hades especially, how was he supposed to earn the favors of mortals when they wouldn't even dare speak his name? This led to him having to build the Underworld on the value of specific resources - such as the minerals and metals and gemstones found in the Underworld itself - which were later refined into common currency that's now used across the realms.

Fun fact, this is also why Kore is ticked off that the Underworld costs a toll to enter for both shades and gods alike - because there isn't a toll booth to get into Olympus.

The Underworld has truly mastered the art of microtransactions LMAO

To wrap up this fun lil' lore dump, there's a WIP scene I have on the back burner that goes into greater detail on Olympus' bartering systems but I haven't had the chance to work it naturally into the story yet, I'm hoping it'll be included in an upcoming episode soon but it's basically a cute lil' shopping sequence between Persephone, Artemis, and Daphne :' )

Such a good episode we got, just a silly casino adventure with a side of cheat tactics on the side. And hey, a main focus on Mario, Luigi, and 3! we love to see it :)

But one day, we'll get a girlies-centered episode (happy international women's day). screw it, i might write it!

Oh, the mystery of the title? What is up with that anyway? There has to be a reason why it's excluded this time. The most probable is that they forgot to add it in, pretty reasonable. But the speculation I had was that (starting from this year btw) it's a split of timelines and at least one of them should be considered canon. Ever since the No TV episode and the Team being lured into Mr Puzzles' trap, the titles haven't been the same. And who's to say we returned from the OG timeline? But that's crazy me saying this, I've been thinking of multiverse stuff lately. Another could be a fight of control over the channel. Who's to say? Like I said, it could be an honest mistake, but it'll be best if we keep an eye on that, ok?

[EDIT: well it turns out, the prefix is now added to the title. maybe the Team forgot to add it in lol. still, having it included in these recent episodes is still spooky, ooooooh *spooky hands*]

I actually have a bit of hc for the end there with Luigi: I would like to think that Luigi did know that Mario cheat but he let Mario have this one. After all, all Mario would win is his hat (and life) back. Basically how one of your siblings got in trouble and you kinda have to lecture them but because you care for them, you let them off easy. Yeah, like that. Luigi is a good sport and forgiving, as seen from the beginning, he's just choosing not to say anything. But Luigi did hope that Mario learned his lesson... which Mario didn't. welp, sorry dude

Ring Theory Continued: Episode 7

Ep 3 Ep 4 Ep 5 Ep 6

Short ring theory summary -> Right hand = power game; Left hand = personal game. Second finger is love/protection of a loved one. Third finger is good/neutral (or at least pretending to be). Fourth finger is no bueno. Pinkie is Chakri 🥰/support.

This week was VERY interesting for ring tracking in The Next Prince. There was a lot to track with several new players to the game.

In disappointing news...our coach Joe? Doesn't wear a ring.

So does that mean the ring theory has collapsed? Or does it mean that he wasn't actually behind the poisoning?

Hard to say. We know he was put in place by Prince Rachata. That man's ring has never changed (right hand, fourth finger). He's always been in it for the power, and he's not hiding any of his negative energy.

But his personal butler has a personal agenda based on love (left hand, second finger)? Shocking I dare say.

Joe is definitely suspicious and booked it after the poisoning happened. But it's pretty hard to keep tabs on a prince you killed.

And we already know there are consequences when a prince comes to harm in your care. He'd have a good reason to run scared.

Hmm. Something to think about. Anyways, Prince Tharin's ring hasn't changed. He still has a personal game supporting Khanin.

There are other suspicious people around...like the King's butler. He also wears his ring on his fourth finger. Is that because he has his own agenda? Or because he's supporting the King's evil plans?

Also hard to say. The King definitely has his own evil agenda still.

But seemed rather remorseful about Khanin's poisoning. His ring may have been there, but his sleeves ALMOST covered it up whereas butler's stayed in full view.

Who do I not suspect? Ramil. He may not sound too distraught.

But both him and Paytai are still ringless. They're being honest with each other at least. I do think Ramil would take it as a personal insult if Khanin bowed out by dying. He wants to beat Khanin himself.

In other news, Chakri was fully back in his support role this episode. His ring flashed SO MANY times. We've never had as many good looks at Chakri's ring as we did this episode. He was the MVP supporting Khanin in every way possible, and Khanin is back to appreciating that support.

The one exception? When Chakri walked in ringless on the kiss at the beginning. Khanin wasn't seeing that as very supportive at all.

I might've wished that Charan would have worn a ring when he went to confront Joe, but he stayed ringless as always. Ever sincere and open in his intentions. I do find it interesting that he's one of the only guards that doesn't wear gloves.

Khanin is always ringless when alone with Charan.

But Khanin does still play the game at some points. Both when he confronted the King directly...

And tried to figure out ways around the system, his ring switched to the right hand. He had good intentions and was trying to push for power at that point.

But by later in the episode, he was back to it being personal (left hand).

He had accepted that he had no power in this situation. "I've never had this feeling before."

Khanin, I'm sure Ramil and Ava could've clued you in on that.

Speaking of Ava, she popped off and was very blunt with her dad while wearing gloves that only partially covered her hands and were made of leather.

But she was back to covering her hands when she went to check on Khanin and accepted that she wasn't really allowed to be there.

The interesting thing to me? Her companion wears a ring. ON HER THUMB. What does that mean? Because it means she's serving a different role than we've seen before, and it's a power game.

As for our final royal... Prince Calvin wore his rings the same as last episode.

He has a personal game of love (with Jay) and he has a power game that seems to be for the good.

And Jay? Well, he decided to wear two rings on the right hand. One on his second finger and one on his middle. But...I still haven't figured out why he has power.

Is he a hidden heir to the blue shark kingdom? Is he the "power of the people"? Because we do know that he's actively involved in protests. I kind of like the latter idea.

But I'm not sure. Especially because between coffee and passing out the sandwiches, he decided to shift his game...and wear both rings on the same finger.

And he maintains that placement into the next meal too. Is he just shifty and not to be trusted?

I still don't trust the shark clan, and Jay is very much a part of that clan. Plus, why was he in this city? Which friend did he go to see?

Perhaps, if he is helping the shark clan's agenda, he really thinks he is doing good but will realize later that it's not as good as it appears? Maybe he will later switch allegiance because of Calvin.

Or could this indicate shifting priorities? Focusing more on love than the good of the people?

Hmm...let me go ponder.

Mini Heroes and Mighty Mouths - Thoughts: [Spoilers]

Spoilers for Season 7 of Wild Kratts (this episode is yet to release on television in the U.S.)

Bros be bros (also never pause a Wild Kratts episode. EVER)

Somehow a conversation about Linzer cake seguays into plankton seguays into miniaturizing into microscopic size. O...kay then...?

Pacing aside, this episode does manage to get into the good stuff quickly with the interesting perspective of plankton, helped even more by the amazing color composition. It also serves as a neat follow up to "Our Blue and Green World" by showing both Chris and Martin recognizing the balance in nature that green plankton has in regards to the big blue ocean.

I have many questions about this scene.

How did the turbo ejector manage to switch Martin's wardrobe ENTIRELY??

If the Amphisub had this turbo ejector feature, then this renders conflicts in past episode null and void. Remember back in the second episode where the brothers are nearly crushed by the water pressure? Remember the Season 5 premiere where they get attacked by a salmon shark? So many instances where they could've used this ejector feature! I'm assuming that this feature is new, but, it doesn't answer the question as to why this wasn't added earlier on?

Why does Martin leave his brother behind????? Sure, he was encouraging Chris to leave, but he barely gave him ANY time to react and just went out? I've seen the Pollinator episode enough times to call BULLSHIT on this move.

It is getting REALLY hard to refrain from all the jokes I have up my alley but I've got a job to do here people so...

Also... missed opportunity for a Manta Ray Suit. We've seen these guys since the first season, and yet somehow we're also yet to have an episode based around them.

That being said, I was about to complain about how there wasn't a Plankton Suit, since that would've paralleled the whole Creature Powers of "Mini Heroes" and "Mega Mouths" but then I realized how fucking dumb and useless a plankton suit would be so, yeah, the episode dodged a bullet.

Lots of neat shit to talk about

As a connoisseur of the flash games, I appreciated hearing the track used in "Go Cheetah Go" used here. We haven't heard much of that score since Season 3 so to find it here in S7 is such a win.

Also, it seems like I was right. The episodes WERE aired out of order. Chronologically, Mini Heroes and Mighty Mouths takes place before Activate Kid Power in the timeline since the Humpback Suit was invented here. I understand why the episode orders weren't swapped within this month's collection since the one-hour specials are meant to be tentpole episodes for the weekly batch of episodes: But they could've simply aired Mini Heroes and Mighty Mouths in the previous batch of episodes alongside Salamander Streaming, Bumblezzzz, and Chimpanzee and Me. Not only would it have allowed that batch to have almost a full week's worth of episodes (much like the first 4 episodes of the season) it would've made more sense. I’m going to answer these two asks together because they are very related.

I think what episode 3 has really served to hammer in is commentary on the cycle of abuse across the Graves family. We are shown Douglas’s parents in the opening sequence of the episode, and we finally get to hear about Renee’s family life (at least, slight mentions of her mother and sister) because like how the abuse between just Andrew and Ashley motivates each of them to keep the cycle going against each other on a somewhat self-contained level (at least whilst they’re just by themselves) a lot of their parents behaviour can be explained by their early home lives, and a lot of their behaviour can be explained by how Renee and Douglas treated them.

Douglas inherited many meek behaviours from his mother because his father is a physically and verbally abusive misogynistic prick. It’s clear enough from how Douglas actually respects Renee that he hasn’t internalised his father’s mindset, but he has certainly internalised things from growing up under him anyway. He’s like his mother in that he has learnt how to not set off his father by necessity. He doesn’t know how to stand up to himself because you just often can’t stand up to people like his father. And so when he becomes a parent himself, he’s apathetic, and he’s distant. He’s still very young himself, like you say, so he’s not emotionally equipped to actually support Andrew or Ashley, and given that he’s still recovering from being under his father’s oppressive thumb, of course it makes sense that his strategy is to just not enforce anything on his kids.

And then Renee… We know less directly about her homelife, so she’s slightly harder to analyse, but we also know MUCH more about her character. Interesting points to note are that she’s internalised a rule against physical violence – quite possibly due to Douglas’s parents given her total disdain for them, but this could also possibly be indicative of what her parents were like – and that her view on siblings is… skewed. We know that Renee felt that her sister’s presence was oppressive. We know that she tells Andrew that feeling like your sibling is everywhere and taking over your life is normal, and whilst she could just be trying to placate him, because that is most certainly her overall intention in the scene where she tells him that, I do think it likely comes from something of a genuine place, given how utterly vindictive she is about her sister’s death, and also how upset she gets after her mother only calls her to ask for help with her sister. So Renee won’t discipline with violence, but she will yell and scream and pass on responsibility, because in her mind, if siblings are that are oppressive, they might as well do something for it, right? And because she has very, very likely taken on a lot of her mother’s behaviours in a similar way to how Andrew has taken on a lot of hers.

It’s a genuine question that can still be asked why exactly Renee had Ashley. We know Andrew was an accident, and we know that he was an easy child despite Renee having gotten pregnant so young, but it’s certainly worth noting that Ashley was also a teen pregnancy, and that given Renee’s view on siblings, there is certainly something to look at here. Yes, we’re told by Renee herself that she had Ashley basically just because Andrew was easy, but if you start to think about it, why did she need a second child at all? Just the one was enough reason to never go back home, and Andrew was being at least partially raised by Douglas’s parents, who she hates anyway. We know she later views Ashley as a mistake, but what exactly were her intentions here? She was never going to be a great parent to Andrew, even if it had stayed only him, because she had already internalised a lot of the wrong behaviours, and Douglas is just so apathetic to anyone who isn’t Renee.

If I’m to speculate, the obvious throughline is regarding Renee’s own sister. We know that Renee is an older sister, and one possible interpretation of why she hangs up the phone when she does in the vision where her mother calls her is because she maybe does have complicated feelings on just letting her sister die. (Another possible interpretation, and perhaps the more obvious one, I should say, is that she’s just upset in general and has had enough of her mother so clearly using the same manipulation tactics that she uses on her kids on her) We know Renee’s angry at her mother for kicking her out and for not supporting her. But what role did Connie (her younger sister) have in that? Because she can’t have been a direct force, but she certainly could have been a compounding one, to Renee. We don’t know enough about her to say exactly, I suppose. I think in general though, a decent reading of this scene, and Renee’s broader story in general, is that she had Ashley, the second kid, because she’s acting at least partially out of spite to create the sort of “happy family” she felt she never had.

Or at least, the image of the happy family. Renee keeps Andrew despite everyone telling her not to, because suddenly it gives her reason to live with the one person she actually loves, and because when she’s met with an ultimatum by her mother, she decides she’d much rather do the harder thing of literally raising a child than stay there. It wasn’t her choice that she was kicked out — her mother is wrong about that – but it was hers to keep the child even after she left. So then Andrew is an easy child, and despite her and Douglas still being children themselves, maybe it does seem easy. Like, really easy to prove her mother entirely wrong, and show that she could raise a nice little happy family. So she has Ashley two years later as well, because maybe she feels the tiniest bit of lingering regret about Connie, but mostly, I suspect, she’s just sticking it to her mother. “Look, I have two kids now, and we’re all much happier than you’ll ever be!”

This goes wrong, terribly wrong, because Renee and Douglas’s motives for having these children are clearly not fair on the children themselves and don’t seem to actually have much interest in doing the hard work that comes with raising a child. To some extent, this is not their fault. They were children themselves at the time, and we can clearly see patterns of the cycle of the abuse appearing in them. But they made the decision to have Andrew and Ashley anyway. The thing is, to Renee, I suspect, it doesn’t matter that much. Siblings are oppressive, so leaving Ashley with Andrew is just normal, and as long as she looks like a good mother from the outside, especially to her family, I’m just not sure she cares.

You raise an interesting point about the gender of the kids, but I should say that I actually think it might matter considerably less to Renee that is being assumed here, because I think her ideal completed family is moreso built upon her own family’s structure, as opposed to societal norms. She is the older sister, and so she is the parallel to Andrew. If her first child had been a girl, I think perhaps she might have seen the parallels to herself more, but I also think that would have just been more likely to have to have the second kid – the Connie to her Renee, to really build up the image of the perfect happy family. And if her second child had been a boy? I still think she would have stuck Andrew on him to raise him, had he been as difficult as our Ashley, but I think this would be much more likely to potentially impact the Andrew and Ashley relationship (or, uh, Andrew and hypothetical second male child who for the sake of argument is exactly like Ashley) than it would be to impact Renee’s relationship with her kids. I think the scenario in which she would maybe have a third kid is one where Ashley was just as easy if a child to raise as Andrew, but even in that case, if Renee was just trying to mirror her own family’s structure, I suspect she would have stopped at just two kids anyway. (Unless, of course, she has more siblings that we don’t know about)

This is all mostly to say the firstly, I’m not certain there is any recognisably similar scenario where Andrew and Ashley are still born under the same circumstances but Renee and Douglas aren’t neglectful, but also, of course they would not be equipped to raise children at such a young age. The game tells us this through Douglas’s mother, who basically says as much to Renee, even if she’s not so direct about it because of her learned behaviours from being around her husband.

Douglas and Renee couldn’t just run away from their trauma in the most literal way possible, because they had to leave Andrew and Ashley at “the wife-beater’s” house anyway, at the heart of Douglas’s trauma, and with the people Renee had been planning to murder only months before. She has no good options once she’d had the child, no, and if she really wanted to have it, then that was her prerogative, but just because of her situation, it was never going to go well. Andrew was never going to have a good life under his parents, let alone Ashley.

And that’s how she ended up in Tannyhill, with Rafe Cameron’s arm slung around her shoulder.

The size of the house alarmed her, the huge white edifice looming over the landscape as she pulled up to his driveway, seemingly getting bigger as she approached it.

“You wanna see some more?” Rafe said, voice low. Tone suggestive.

Sofia’s stomach flipped, “yeah I’m down.”

“Great news, that’s great news, I’ll give you the grand tour,” he teased, pulling her into his body with his arm. Sofia laughed melodically, letting him lead her inside, butterflies fluttering in her stomach. The two slotted perfectly against each other, Sofia relishing the way he found every opportunity to touch her. She knew he probably only wanted to sleep with her. But she didn’t care– she also wanted the same. He was hot. Enthralling. Undeniable. For a moment she could pretend like she was one of the girls at the country club– not just its bartender.

They were about to enter, before she felt Rafe’s hand slide down her back. She turned to look up at him.

“Just give me like five minutes. I’ll meet you upstairs.”

She nodded, noticing how his hand seemed to linger on her lower back.

“Ok,” she smiled, exiting the balcony.

Sofia roamed the house, not really knowing much of the people there. She offered a couple of smiles, but not many people reciprocated them. She followed Rafe’s instructions and headed upstairs. The girls all seemed to throw her chary, frigid looks, casting whispers to their friends as she walked past. Sofia felt her skin turn red, feeling the scrutiny pierce her. She pushed the sensation away, hoping that Rafe would be quick.

Barry’s words left a stirring disquiet in his stomach.

The hint that he needed to remove Ward off the battlefield, as Barry had put it, swirling about in his mind.

Rafe downed his drink, letting the crystal glass clatter onto the table as he got up in a huff.

“Have fun Country Club,” Barry jeered, as he left the balcony, mood soured. He headed upstairs to Sofia. His nerves were frayed and Barry hadn’t helped, now his mind migrating elsewhere. Somewhere dark.

Despite his playboy persona, his exaggerated swagger and intense ostentation, Rafe hadn’t been like this in years. After what had happened to the Sheriff, he put the hedonism of house parties and the company of girls behind him, too consumed by a festering guilt.

But he was past that now. He could enjoy himself again.

He reached the top of the stairs. This floor was empty, the noise of the party filtering up from downstairs. He spotted her. She was standing by the table with all the framed photographs of the Cameron family, of them as kids, of them at Midsummers. He watched as she ran a finger through the dust coated picture frames, picking one of them up with a small smile. Rafe roiled with anticipation.

He supposed that was why he asked Sofia to come. He could’ve had any kook girl of his choosing, but he was afraid. He knew word got around in the country club circles– the pressure would be too much. Besides, most of them were mean. Vapid. Obsessive.

Sofia seemed sweet. He could tell she hadn’t been in the Outer Banks long since she didn’t know who he was. He liked that. There wasn’t any expectation for him to fulfil. Or for him to disappoint. By being Rafe Cameron…Whatever that meant.

He inhaled a short, sharp breath and approached her, slipping a hand around her waist from behind, “hey.”

Sofia jumped up slightly, letting out a little gasp, “oh my god you scared me,” she laughed spinning around to face him.

“Oh yeah? What are you doing snooping about my house then, Miss Sofia?” He teased, slotting his other hand around her waist too.

“Just looking at the pictures. You were cute as a kid.” Her smile was big and her eyes were shiny, the irises almost lined with gold. They reminded him of how the Cross of Santo Domingo burned in the fire. Golden and bright.

Fuck she was gorgeous– Rafe thought– especially for a Pogue.

“And what about now?” He probed.

He could see her eyes dilate, “still cute.”

Rafe felt his heartbeat waver.

“I’ll show you to my room.”

Sofia walked into the vast space, the four post bed sprawling and plush, damask drapes lining each window, the chandelier casting light refractions across the creamy walls as the sunset spilled in through the glass.

“Woah.” Was the only thing she could say.

Rafe laughed softly behind her, shutting the door as he entered.

“Let me take that from you.” He said as he neared her, swiping the red solo cup out of her hand and placing it on the bedside table. She obliged, eyes tailing him, an amalgam of excitement and anxiety brimming in her.

The sun was setting, the sky getting dusky with the heady glow of late summer, the room awash in the colours of twilight. Sofia could see Rafe’s eyes shine darkly as he looked down at her.

“How did you find the party then?” He asked.

She smiled once again, finding it hard not to, “I had fun. Thanks for the invite.”

“That’s good– I’m glad. Uh you wanna sit down?”

Sofia nodded, letting him lead her to the side of the bed. Rafe seemed different now. The sharp confidence from before was replaced with a care and softness that surprised her.

The two were silent for a while, the music from the party sounding faint and far away and the soft shadows of the room felt warm and fuzzy. Rafe placed a gentle hand on her knee, contrasting the quick and easy ways he’d touched her throughout the day. This was deliberate.

“Can I…” he started.

Sofia nodded, “please do,” her voice close to a whisper.

His fingers inched up her thigh, his touch light like gossamer, trailing up to the strands tying her bikini cover up. He tugged them lazily, letting the fabric fall. Sofia’s chest rose and fell as she tried to level her breathing, watching Rafe with lidded eyes. His gaze roamed her body hungrily, the pupils growing darker.

His hands then moved to the side of her face, tucking the stray strands of hair behind her ear. Rafe inched closer towards her, finally bridging the gap with a slow kiss, Sofia feeling her skin prickle in expectation.

Her hand shot to his face, cupping his cheek as he deepened the kiss, whilst pulling down the fabric of her dress, until she was left in nothing but her red bikini.

Rafe’s face lit up, the slow and deliberate movements giving way to a quick and fervid desperation as he swiped his polo shirt off in one swift manoeuvre, capturing Sofia in his arms and placing her head on the pillow as he caged her body with his.

She gasped at the sudden change in pace, looking up at him with a doe eyed expression.

“Sorry,” he murmured, confusing her countenance for fear.

“Don’t apologise, just come here,” she said with a dopey smile, pulling him into a kiss, as she hooked her arms around his neck.

“As you wish, Miss Sofia,” he teased, smiling against her lips at the nickname he’d given her.

His body was flush against hers, the two of them getting lost in a heady bubble of ecstasy as the party continued on downstairs.

The sun had set completely, the sky dark and the stars out. Rafe switched on a lamp, lying back in bed with his arms behind his head. Sofia was in the shower, the faint sound of water running the only thing he could hear in the room.

Everyone had left, the music had stopped. It was just them in the house. But despite how much fun he’d had with her, he couldn’t stop thinking about the inkling in his head– Ward needed to be gone.

The door to the en-suite creaked open, Sofia entering the room wrapped in a towel, rivulets of water running down her skin. She gave a smile, which Rafe reciprocated, sitting up on his elbow. He pushed away the dark thoughts that had wormed into his brain and honed on to her. She walked over to her discarded bikini and cover, picking the flimsy material up.

“Thanks for letting me use your shower.” She said sweetly.

“No problem.” Rafe replied.

“I guess I’ll be heading home then.”

His eyebrows furrowed in confusion, “what?”

“Yeah, I’ll get out of your way.”

Rafe got up out of bed, pulling on his boxers, “it’s late. You’ve had a couple of drinks. Just stay the night.” He walked past her towards his wardrobe, pulling out a clean shirt and handing it to her. “Here you can wear this.”

Sofia eyed the shirt. Then flicked her gaze up to him.

“You sure?”

He laughed softly, slightly puzzled, “yeah of course.”

Sofia accepted the shirt, giving him a funny look.

“I’ll look away. You get changed.” He said, walking back to the bed as she slipped it on.

She climbed in bed not soon after, lying down with a sigh.

“You’re not like how I thought you’d be.” She mused, glancing over to him quietly.

Rafe’s breath hitched, “is that a good thing or a bad thing.”

“Good. Definitely good.”

Rafe had fallen asleep. His back was turned to her, his soft breaths ebbing and flowing in the silence. She examined the constellation of freckles on his shoulders, scared to trace her finger through them in case he woke up. She turned around, lying face up to the ceiling.

Rafe Cameron confounded her. Even in sex, he’d flit from gentle to rough. From soft to callous. His fingers would grip her skin before dissolving into the most tender of touches. She’d feel his teeth clash against her own, before he slipped into a mellow pace, trailing his lips across hers like a feather. And now– wasn’t this a hookup? That’s the impression she got. So why was he being so….kind?

She was exhausted; Rafe really had tired her out. She fell into dreams soon after, the sumptuous bed sheets and silken pillows making it easy, the comforting presence of Rafe sleeping beside her making it even easier.

Leonardo:

“Uncle Mikey!”, 16 year old Romeo called out, holding his odachi high above his head, gleaming with pride when Michelangelo entered the dojo. “See what I can do!” What followed was a series of fast movements that ended with him posing with his odachi just in front of him, shining in the light.

Gerardo let out a sound of amazement, while Marcello rolled his eyes, crossing his arms over his chest. “Show off”.

“Wow, when did you learn that?”, Mikey smiled, knowing how hard his oldest nephew had trained, since Master Splinter first gave him his odachi at the age of 15.

“I learned it myself”, Romeo said proudly, before swinging the odachi in a manner that reminded Mikey of a teenage Leonardo. No doubt that was the oldest son of the fearless leader. “I’m going to show dad later. Do you think he’ll like it?”

“You’re asking if your father will be happy to see something you have learned yourself?”, Mikey asked, his serious tone breaking with his smile as he ruffled the top of Romeo’s head, letting his nephew know that he was joking. “Of course he will. That’s the kind of stuff that will make your old man proud”.

“Me too!”, Gerardo yelled out, mimicking his oldest brother’s moves, but without any weapon in his hands.

“Leo! Is that you?”, Mikey asked jokingly, making the 10 year old laugh loudly, before Romeo put his weapon away, so he and Gerardo engaged in some light hearted sparring, their laughter echoing loudly through the dojo.

Mikey turned to find his other nephew sitting in the corner of the room, watching his brothers run around with a small scowl. Mikey was no stranger to Marcello’s tempered episodes, having been present to many of them, or at least within ear shot. So as he made his way over to the 13 year old Marcello, he knew exactly what was going on. But he would let the young half mutant have a chance, at explaining what he was feeling.

“Hey there, big guy”, Mikey said, taking a seat on the floor next to the grumpy teenager. Marcello shot him a look and greeted him with a small hey, resting his chin in his hand. “Why are you sitting over here?”

“Because those two are taking up the whole dojo”, Marcello mumbled, nodding to his brothers. “A guy can’t get space around here”.

Mikey watched Marcello have his brothers for a moment, before he decided to stand, turning to his nephew with a smile. “Well, guess we then have to make some space”, he said, Marcello looking at him in curiosity. “Ever tried nunchucks before?”

“No”, Marcello answered, unable to hide his smile as he stood up. “Can I try yours?”

“Of course you can”, Mikey said, pulling his nunchucks from his belt, holding them out in front of Marcello, watching his face light up even further. And Mikey’s next words only served to make him smile even brighter. “Time to show your father something the others can’t”.

Raphael:

Raph had never really been good at meditating. He had never really liked it, and he generally had a hard time keeping his mind calm for so long. But he did really want his children to learn it. Or at least get familiar with it, should they ever get to a position where they would need it. And therefore Raph asked Leonardo for help. Leo had always been a natural at meditating, and had for the most part successfully taught his own children to do it, so maybe he could teach Raph’s children the same.

And that was how Leo ended up in the dojo with his nephew and two nieces, helping them clear their minds, the same way that had worked for his own children. But Leo soon found himself facing a difficult situation - these were his nieces and nephew, the children of his hot-tempered and at times inpatient brother. And that much was obvious, from the way the three children had a hard time sitting still, almost refusing to go too far into their own heads.

As Leo spoke about slow breathing, keeping their eyes closed, and bringing their thoughts to focus on the said breathing, only Joan seemed to be able to sit still, wanting to get this over with, so she could go back to whatever a 13 year old teenage girl liked to speed her time with. But her younger siblings weren't finding it as easy. 6 year old Ragnar had a hard time concentrating, his attention being grabbed by every sound outside the dojo, creating all sorts of images in his head. All from his mother and father watching television, to a monster breaking through the entrance of the lair, making him uneasy. Minerva however, just couldn’t sit right. Her legs kept falling asleep and her skin kept crawling, her knee impatiently bouncing in its bent position, pushing up against Joan, drawing an irritated sigh from the frustrated teen, who had just managed to empty her head for a short moment.

“Mini, stop moving your leg”, Leo said without opening his eyes, causing Ragnar to look at him in amazement. How did he do that?

“But, uncle Leo”, Mini said, laying down onto her back, stretching out on the dojo floor. “Meditation is so hard and boring”.

“If you shut up, it maybe wouldn’t be so hard”, Joan mumbled, shooting her little sister a look that made Mini sit back up.

Leo opened his eyes, taking a moment to study Mini as she still couldn’t sit still. “Can you say why it's hard and boring? It’s okay, there’s no right or wrong answer”.

Mini sat for a moment, chewing the inside of her cheek, thinking her answer through. "It's hard to empty my head”, the 9 year old mumbled.

Leo looked at Mini and thought for a moment, before he finally smiled at her, noticing the relieved expression on her face.

“That’s okay”, Leo said, adjusting his legs. “It’s very hard to just empty your head, especially when you’re used to thinking a lot. What you can do instead, is to notice your thoughts. Take note of them and let them be. Don’t fight them, but let them flow naturally. Hopefully that will feel easier”.

Mini nodded with a bright smile, before folding her legs once more, actually being able to sit still this time. Smiling at the sight, Leo turned his attention towards Ragnar, noticing how he kept throwing glances at the dojo doors.

“Do you want to sit next to me, Ragnar?”, Leo asked, holding out his hand to the small boy. Ragnar nodded before making his way over next to Leo, taking a good hold of his hand, before he sat down next to him with his legs crossed, for once not looking towards the door, when he heard the small sounds coming from the other side.

Donatello:

Sometimes it just happened, and Raph wasn’t really sure how. He would walk into a room, find his nephews and nieces playing with something, either with or without his own children, and suddenly he would be sitting down with them, playing along, all full of life and energy. And today wasn’t any different.

Raph had found his 10 year old nephew, Galileo at the kitchen table, scribbling away at pieces of paper with thick colorful crayons, and a concentrated expression on his face - one that very much reminded Raph of Donatello, whenever he was in deep concentration inside his lab.

Raph had asked Gali about what he was drawing, and soon he sat with his nephew at the kitchen table, drawing all sorts of stars and action heroes, causing Gali great amusement, as they took turns adding to the drawing. However, as the two of them continued their drawing game, they were soon joined by Marie and Dorothy.

The two 5 year old girls sat at the table, grabbing their own pieces of paper and a handful of crayons, only for their attention to be fully caught by Gali and Raph’s drawings. And of course, the two girls wanted in, wanting to join their older brother and their uncle.

“Can we play too?”, Dorothy asked, trying to touch the paper with her pink crayon, only for Gali to turn to her with a dirty look. A look that even Raph has seen many times, whenever Gali felt like his sisters crept in on his personal space.

“No, me and uncle Raph are busy”, Gali said, doing a hand movement, as if he was trying to shoo his sisters away.

“But we want to play!”, Marie whined, her green crayon in hand.

“I said no”, Gali said, turning his back on his sisters, pushing his paper further away from them. And of course, this action caused tears to gloss over the girls eyes, looking longingly at the paper he and Raph had been drawing on.

“You know what?”, Raph suddenly said, catching the attention of the three children once more. “I have a better idea”.

Standing from the table, Raph grabbed the stack of paper, before splaying them out over the kitchen table, until the whole surface was covered in the white paper. The three kids, seeming to understand what Raph was doing, looked up at their uncle with wide smiles, grabbing onto the crayons with excitement.

“Let’s draw the biggest drawing ever!”, Raph said, watching with a happy smile, his nephew and niece smiled at each other, before turning their attention towards the many papers in front of them.

As Raph and three kids continued their drawing, the other kids slowly came to the table, taking a look before adding onto the large piece themselves. It didn’t take long before all the kids of the lair sat around the kitchen table, drawing until there was almost no crayons left.

Michelangelo:

1.5 year old Luis had been sick for a few days now, crying for both you and Mikey at all times. The poor little guy was teething, and with that came sickness and pain, and so, you and Mikey was hung up, spending most of your time with your crying child, trying to soothe the pain in his gums. And this left Sunny BORED. Ever since Luis had gotten sick due to his teething, Sunny had been a bored and sighing mess. She wandered around the lair, waiting for the moment Luis got better, so either you, Mikey or maybe even Luis could come play with her. But until then, she would have to entertain herself, or find someone else to do so. And that was how she ended up in the lab with her uncle, draping herself over a small table on the other side of the room, with a small installation of the solar system on it.

Donnie saw his niece enter the lair, and spoke to her without looking away from his work. “Hey, Sunny. How’s it going?”

“Bored!”, Sunny groaned, resting her chin on the table, her eyes staring at the small earth in front of her. “Luis’ sick, so there’s nothing to do”.

“That doesn’t sound good”, Donnie said, turning his chair so he could watch Sunny, making sure she wasn’t getting her fingers into something she shouldn’t. She had a tendency to touch whatever she found interesting. And just as Donnie had thought, she was now poking at the miniature solar system. “Have you asked Gali if he wants to play?”

“He’s reading with aunt (D/W/N)”, the girl mumbled. However, her flighty attention and curiosity was very soon taken by the miniature she was playing with. “What is this?”

“That?”, Donnie asked, rolling his chair over to her. “That’s the solar system. The one you’re touching right now is earth”.

“Earth”, Sunny repeated, her attention jumping to the small white ball beside it. “What’s this?”

“That’s the moon”, Donnie answered.

“The moon?”, Sunny asked, her eyes shining with excitement. “Like the one in the sky?”

“Yes”, Donnie smiled. “Like the one in the sky”.

“Do there live fairies on the moon?”, Sunny asked, pushing the moon spindle, so it made a rush of circles around the earth.

Donnie chuckled at her question. She was truely Mikey’s daughter.

“Do you want fairies to live on the moon?”, Donnie asked, watching Sunny study the solar system. His niece looked at him and nodded. “Then in that case, there lives moon fairies on the moon. But they are hard to find. They neither like robots or beings that aren’t fairies themselves”.

“But I’m a fairy!”, Sunny exclaimed.

“You are!?”, Donnie asked, acting surprised. He looked around, acting as if he was thinking, making Sunny laugh. “But we’re in my lab! There are robots! Come on fairy, let’s get you out of here and find some of your fairy friends!”

And with a loud giggle, Sunny ran out of the room, waiting for Donnie to close the door to the lab behind him, before they continued their fairy game in the living area.

As a witch on the run, Caroline thought hiding out in a speakeasy in Chicago would be the perfect escape. She couldn’t have guessed there was an even bigger threat than the Ripper of Monterey also hiding out there...

A Little Spark

            Chicago was a long way from Mystic Falls. But maybe not far enough, Caroline thought with a grimace as she watched Gloria light a sage bundle with little more than an impatient twitch of her eyelid as she carried on a hushed conversation in a shadowy corner. Caroline may have been a young witch with only a paltry burst of power to draw from, but she knew that spell. And the juice coming off of her sharp-tongued boss had her rethinking this speakeasy was the best place to hide from her troubles. It was shameful how she’d forgotten the harsh lessons of Mystic Falls and had failed to see what was in front of her. Never trust another witch.

            At least back home, she knew all the so-called “friends” and traitorous relatives that wanted to burn the witch out of her. Chicago appeared to be brimming with more enemies than she realized. Even the dark threat of the serial killer stalking Chicago’s streets didn’t fill her with the blind panic she now felt. Caroline had learned the hard way that witches led to vampires or werewolves and chaos and death always followed in their wake.

            She straightened the black fringe on her dress and picked up another serving tray, determined to finish out her shift and earn as many tips as she could before catching a train far away from here. But she’d wait until morning when it would feel safer — the newspapers kept reporting that the serial killer — whom they kept pushing the wild rumor it was really the Ripper of Monterey — only attacked women at night. And then bizarrely reassembled their torn-apart bodies. Or perhaps not. Was it possible this was the work of a vampire? 

            Caroline sighed, heat rising in her cheeks at her foolishness. It was naïve of her to think that the supernatural wouldn’t flock to big cities just as easily as a frightened witch would. She squeezed through the wild crowd of drunken revelry, a sadness creeping in as she realized how much she’d miss Chicago despite these unsavory revelations. 

            It was a vibrant place, seemingly untouched by the oppressive government sanctions — if you knew where to look. Gloria’s had seemed like the perfect escape with its underground, seductive appeal. The live jazz every night accompanied by Gloria’s rich, gravelly notes along with the finest bootlegged liquor in three states drew in all the right people who wanted an escape. 

            Caroline carefully held onto her smile as she handed out side cars, gin rickeys and high balls. Warring mafia families all vied for control of the liquor racket, so it was best not to be too standoffish or too flirtatious because one never knew when they’d send in their boys to sniff around the bar to get the lay of the land. Like those three lounging about the VIP booth near the back — they clearly were affiliated with one of those deadly mob families.

            The blonde, Rebekah, carried herself in a regal, elegant manner that Caroline envied. Except when Stefan, the guy with the carefully styled hair came around — then she became wild and flirty, holding him possessively close as they danced and drank. A dangerous pair, her instincts told her. The too-knowing glances and the casual displays of dominance whispered to her they were mobbed up.

            A throaty chuckle drew her attention as it always did and she eagerly drank in the sight of him in his tailored white shirt and black silk vest and bowtie. Speaking of dangerous. She’d overheard Gloria greet him as ‘Klaus’ once, but had wisely prevented either of them from noticing her interest. Klaus was lovely to look at, but Caroline had no desire to become a gangster’s moll. 

            Power practically hummed at that back table, and she wisely ducked her head and busied herself with serving drinks, flashing just enough of her shapely legs to rake in a pretty bit of coin. Coupled with what she had shoved in the hollow bedpost of her tiny apartment, she might be able to make it all the way to Denver. It was a hopeful thought that stayed with her throughout the night, warming her right down to her toes, which is the only excuse she had for getting sloppy.

            One of the other servers was out of gin, and Caroline offered to make the trip to the cellar through the camouflaged door in a false wall. It was a run she’d made numerous times without incident, but now several barrels blocked her usual pathway, which meant she had no choice but to squeeze past that VIP table. Where her eyes often strayed but she never wandered too close. Until now.

            She could overhear Klaus telling Stefan that he’d killed most of his family, but not his sister, Rebekah, because she’d chosen his side. She knew it. They were part of the underworld scene. Mobsters, the lot of them. Just a few more careful steps and she’d be clear of their table. Now Klaus was asking Stefan to justify how he was worthy of Rebekah. Definitely mobsters.

            Stefan called over one of the dancers, his voice a curious, flat monotone that was out of character with his normally arrogant tone. The dancer stumbled toward their booth with jerky, wooden movements. Even before Stefan took a knife to the poor girl’s wrist and bled her into a highball glass, Caroline finally understood what was going on. Vampire. Did this mean Klaus and Rebekah were vampires too?

            Caroline held the serving tray aloft, carefully positioning the empty green and amber bottles to block her from their table as she finally slipped past them. She fought to keep her body from tensing as she overheard Stefan compel another man to drink the blood in the glass. Vicious, dangerous creature. Blue eyes widened as she realized Stefan could be the serial killer. Chicago was probably a prime hunting ground for monsters.

            She let out a grateful sigh as the false wall covered in the gaudy bird and branches motif wallpaper closed behind her. The familiar brick stairs were somehow comforting as she made her way down to the hidden cellar. Carefully positioning one of the empty bottles underneath the row of barrels, she turned on the copper spigot. Refill these bottles, leave them for the server, and then spend the rest of the night down here taking inventory. 

            Gloria would appreciate the extra help and Caroline wanted the added safety measure as she definitely didn’t want to risk going back to her apartment in the dark. Vampires roaming the streets. Serial killer vampires. She’d just finished filling the last bottle when she heard a harsh scrape of wood against brick. Someone had opened the false door.            

            Panicked, she let loose the tiny bit of power she always kept close to the surface, feeling the flames before they flared across her palms.

            “Impressive, love.”

            Her pulse raced as Klaus suddenly appeared before her, studying her with a dimpled smirk. “Well, since you showed me yours,” he teased, black veins crawling underneath his eyes as he unsheathed long, curved fangs.

            Vampire. Just as she feared.

            “What do you want,” Caroline asked flatly, fingers curling around the long neck of a brown bottle. She knew it wouldn’t do any good, but the heft in her trembling hand was a small comfort nonetheless.

            He nodded toward her makeshift weapon with an amused chuckle. “Let’s not be hasty, love. I mean you no harm. In fact, you captured my interest from the moment Gloria hired you.”

            Impossible. She would’ve noticed a creature like Klaus noticing her. Except her power was puny — everyone back home had said so, which meant she couldn’t always sense dark creatures. Unable to stop the disdainful scoff that escaped, she said “I’m fairly certain capturing your interest is the last thing I want to do.”

            He boldly toyed with the black fringe that brushed the top of her shoulder. “Then what is it that you do want? There’s such rage in that tiny frame. Even as you kept your head down and feigned meekness at every turn, you can’t hide that fierce gaze. Why, I’m certain if you had fangs, you’d gash them at every human that vexed you!”

            Even in his monster’s visage, he had dimples. How could she still find him attractive? She hated the flicker of lust that surged through her at his bold advances. And from the low rumbling in his chest, Caroline was certain he could sense her fear…and excitement. Smug bastard.

            “I want to be safe. Finally, truly safe,” she blurted out, secretly pleased with how her words seemed to momentarily stun Klaus. 

            The fingers that had been playing with the fringe on her shoulder stilled and he studied her with growing interest. “I can give that to you, sweetheart. All you have to do is ask.” Glancing at the small flames still stubbornly dancing on Caroline’s palms, Klaus added with a smirk, “Or, I could show you how to nurture that power until you can secure your own safety. You’d be surprised by what a little spark can do.”

I believe I’ve mentioned this before in a post but by now it’s lost to time, so as another blog who has issues with the Megatron redemption thing being very flat:

I wish Earthspark had taken the same route as Steven Universe’s did on Rose/Pink Diamond but with Megatron, the younger members of cast who have only ever known this ‘good’ version of them get to slowly learn new things and experience his redemption in reverse.

All the older bots they know like Elita and Bee and Optimus all get along so well with Megatron except for minor things, so to them it would likely be hard to imagine it could be THAT bad. Even hearing from other Decepticons how he used to be could’ve been interesting and they half-way opened the door to that possibility with the Starscream arc and then slammed it shut by making Starscream so much worse.

Thinking of it from a kid/teen perspective like the terrans, Starscream described him as cruel and how he rules with fear. Hashtag sort of gets an understanding that Megatron didn’t exactly risk his ass for a soldier who was left behind, and yeah that all sounds pretty (vaguely) cold and cruel, but then Starscream rips the life out of two children right in front of them rather maliciously. They’re probably gonna have Starscream as the worst of the two from their views. Like everything he non-descriptively told them about Megatron is gonna pale in comparison to the trauma he just caused them.

(On a side note, I saw a clip from season 3 where Starscream is sitting trapped in the dome having propped up the chaos Terran’s bodies and that’s not really taken as something horrific? Like they all blatantly ignore Starscream as if he poses no threat and the terrans aren’t even a LITTLE disturbed or angry with him? Theyre all just sighing and rolling their eyes??? Pls PICK A TONE they never seem to portray anyone the same way twice whyyyy.)

Focus on Megatron backstory being revealed to the terrans is always so weird and passive. Like them seeing an earlier version of him in that training simulator wasn’t enough for me. I’m not saying ‘traumatize the kids’ cause that’s mean, but like idk an old war story from an oblivious autobot who hasn’t been in touch with the others! That’s an easy option! There’s so many ways and they didn’t utilize it they just… RGH I’m no good with words sorry it’s just so many wasted opportunities and ill-planned plots.

The thing about the "old war story from an Autobot who hasn't been in touch" option is. They literally had the opportunity to do that in S3. Because they introduced Prowl, who had no idea Megatron changed sides, didn't trust him, and didn't like the Autobots relying on kids. So like. He was literally the perfect character to be uncomfortable with how much the kids trust Megatron and want to talk to them about it. And not only did S3 not do that, it ended with Prowl and Megatron on good terms, so they actually removed the possibility of it coming up later (Prowl also decided relying on kids is fine, actually. Mostly I liked how EarthSpark handled him, but they wasted no time forcing the worst parts of the status quo on him).

I'm not super familiar with Steven Universe (mostly I just watched a few Peridot episodes), so I don't know how they built up the reveal with Rose, but I feel like SU is a perfect example of why Megatron's redemption doesn't work. Rose/Pink Diamond was at the top of her society, and when she changed, so did everything around her. She was one of the most important characters in the story while being dead.

Meanwhile, Megatron is just kind of... There? Sure, you have one-off episodes like Shockwave's and Soundwave's debuts where they were specifically mad at Megatron for betraying them, but his redemption doesn't serve the narrative at all. None of the other Decepticons went with him when he defected, there's no evidence that he tried to end the war through negotiation, none of the Autobots have any lingering mistrust. His defection changed nothing, and if the war had ended because of his death instead, you could tell the exact same story by just modifying a few episodes.

And yeah, you have people who'll say it doesn't matter because the story is about the kids, not the legacy characters, but we're talking about the leader of the Decepticons. You don't just redeem the leader of the enemy faction and handle him the way you would handle a random low-ranking soldier.

Honestly, I don't think anything short of a complete rewrite of his character and his impact on the story would fix his redemption. At very least, you'd need to revert back to S1 Starscream, because making the victim worse than his abuser is the surest way to ruin a redemption for me. Just come right out and say the abuse was justified, why don't you.

(You also have people who'll say there's no evidence that Megatron abused Starscream in EarthSpark. I assume those people just kind of ignore Starscream explicitly saying he's not safe around Megatron).

So, my theory about the Bucktommy breakup (the tldr is: maybe they're fucking up around to find out):

Minear gets the go-ahead for Bi Buck but he knows the audience might not approve of that, on top of the usual issues with previous relationships (hard to write/sell to the audience). He wants to give the relationship a chance to get off the ground so he tries to avoid past mistakes with LIs etc, but also 'prepares for the worst' (initial run of 4 episodes).

Then they get whatever numbers that tell them the audience was fine (steady ratings? internal research?), they get good press, so they keep on going: contract extended; LFJ is on the 7.09 bts and the s7 thank you video, and it's him and OS paired up to promote the finale on Access Hollywood.

So now it's s8 prep time and Minear has this relationship that's going fine when they'd started it thinking it would probably have a close expiration date. Fandom/media wise, it's still all stuck on Bvddie (as far as they can see, I figure).

But there isn't an offscreen breakup.

As far as we've been told, going into s8 they were still unsure, and LFJ seemed more surprised about the timing than anything.

So.

It could be that they pushed things they couldn't wrap to s8a and this was one, but... at the end of s7 they added more Bucktommy and it was positive, so I don't think that's the case for this storyline.

My thinking is then, that since a breakup was always in the cards, they decided to go ahead with it now and the way they did it because, say...:

for plot reasons they want Buck to go through it

they can test audience/fan 'attachment' to the relationship via reactions to this

they don't have to settle now on exactly when they'd want LFJ in s8b (which he might have needed to know for his other projects)

gives them extra time before Buck is settled in a relationship (this could buy them like, a season)

they might be waiting to see if they're cancelled or renewed before making certain choices

Know what I mean? basically that they didn't have a plan and so they decided to go for what provided immediate drama as well as some info about the audience's feelings wrt to it.

[I hope I didn't make many mistakes with this. Anyway, Abby's breakup appears 3 times bc it had 'aftershocks']

You see how Natalia is an outlier, but the rest follow a similar pattern (the relationships served a purpose and ended when it was time to close arcs for the season). But Tommy... it could've ended offscreen or right before this hiatus, or before that timeskip or whatever that's supposedly coming and has them in different places. But it was there in 8.06 and they used the following eps before the hiatus to show Buck mourning the relationship...

Maybe, just maybe, they're testing the end similarly to how they tested their beginning.

I'm not saying this is absolutely right, or even that all these things mean something (or that it must mean this). Just that it's an option.

Nabi Notices (May 28, 2025)

It's been a few weeks since I did one of these. Life got busy.

In funny/not-so-funny things, I got told at a family gathering this weekend that I need to "not take things so literally" and "to look for the meaning behind words". 🤣 And besides internally dying with laughter, I only had one thought....

I'm proud of myself. I didn't say it out loud at least. They obviously don't know me well. I guess it takes more than 20 years😅.

In blog world, I've been having a fantastic time thinking about tropes and exploring tags about older shows I enjoyed. @watchthisqqq and @my-rose-tinted-glasses -> I'm still working on my "Old QL tag game" post. Apparently dates are the detail I DON'T notice, and I've watched BLs and queer media in general for so long that they're all mixed up together in my head. I probably should've just went with the first five I thought of and could confirm were pre-2020 instead of trying to actually pick favorites. I'm never good at rankings.

The Things I Noticed This Week:

I'm watching a mix of currently airing and older stuff at the moment. I definitely have not watched everything that's currently airing, and I'm finding myself binging more lately. Frankly, with the way work is currently, binging or replaying episodes is easier. The fewer decisions I'm having to make in other areas, the better. LOL.

Fabulous Fit

Since it's been a few weeks, I'm going to post a few here.

My Stubborn - Episode 5

I love both of their outfits in this scene. Black tee and jeans is pretty much a sexy staple, but beyond that -> Boat wore it extremely well. Petition to just do casual dress day at the office from here on out. It's not like we're professionals anyways. And the cloud sweater? It pops up frequently, but I want it every single time.

Pit Babe 2 -> Episode 3

Do I love this shirt with it's heart cut out? Do I hate it? I haven't decided. But I KEEP thinking about it which says...something.

Light on Me

We all know I love a good sweater, but pairing it with a fun hat to match? It's a look that brought me joy. We have enough gimmicky country themed events around here for me to know that I'd wear it if the occasion served.

And not really an entire fit, but I loved the fact that Xiao Bai wore BOTH ear cuffs while they were apart in Fight for You. The food symbolism and finger bite in the NC scene were nice bonuses.

Fascinating Find

My main deep dive this past week was into all of the symbols of The Next Prince, because it's feeding my clown car theories. Main summary -> the blue flag has an asterism on it that represents the crocodile king. A figure that is NOT the good guy in Thai folklore. I never fear the snake easily spotted in the open as much as the one hidden in the grass.

Fantastic Frame

There have been a lot of frames I've enjoyed. I will continue to reblog pretty much every variation of the Ramil/Paytai scenes from this week. As many brilliant people have discussed, their scenes feature so much good framing and lighting. It's feeding my obsession with them a wee bit. Not that it was hard to do given the characters' dynamic.

But one that I haven't discussed -> this one in Boys in Love.

The siblings all together embracing each other, because they ARE a unit no matter what problems loom behind them. And while they may have some terrible parents, they are not without support. Their support crew just comes in the teenage variety. Watching over them joyfully in the background. No judgment, just ready to hop in the car if needed and lend a helping hand on their journey.

Fun Flourish

Knock Out easily won this category this week with episode 3. I often save this category for just small, whimsical additions or something random I noticed.

But this kiss through the barrier....

And the incredible use of oil demanded attention.

Between this and IFYLITA, Director Tee knows how to shoot an oil scene is all I'm saying.

Favorite Fragment

I do not think I have ever seen the word "fuddy-duddy" in a subtitle previously, but it's a term my mother uses ALL the time. I was cackling throughout this scene in The Untamed.

I also really enjoyed this bit of dialogue from Two Husbands, One Wife as Mia contemplates what it really means to be in a poly relationship.

It was such a great way of describing that in a throuple, there are three sides that are all connected without any one of them holding more importance than the others.

also brett matthews was Crazy for not only implying assault can turn you gay but then writing dean hurting his stepson after being turned into a vampire (gay) like. brett matthews your homophobia is unmatched

like yeah the fans who insist the monsters represent gay people have a point but it's literally this singular episode and it's done in a way that is so deeply homophobic it's crazy

sorry if that last ask was too much but it drives me insane whenever people ignore the insane amount of homophobia in twi-hard.

Okay so here's the thing. I'm not a particular fan of the tone of Brett Matthews episodes. I don't mind exploring non-consensual themes but I think he has a very odd fixation on them. At least in "Live Free Or Twi-Hard", this serves a purpose to the larger storyline surrounding soulless Sam and what he's willing to do, as well as the alpha monsters and how the alpha vampire is building an army. It even gives us some insight into Samuel's moral framework and his perception of Sam and Dean. It also unburies memories of some of Dean’s past experiences being used as bait by his family (or using sex to get them information). In "Caged Heat", Matthews repeated references to non-consensual sexual acts just feel like edgy set dressing for the most part.

The thing is that I also don't think Brett Matthews means to imply anywhere in "Live Free Or Twi-Hard" that being assaulted makes you gay or that Dean's gayness then harms Ben/the family. I think I understand how one can build that reading out of the episode, but I do not ultimately accept that reading. I also don't think monstrosity or vampirism is inherently queer. I do not accept that premise. Monstrosity in general or vampirism in particular certainly can represent queerness, and vampirism has been used as a metaphor for queerness in media many times, but vampirism doesn't inherently represent queerness. If it did, then almost every piece of media about vampires ever made would arguably be sowing the same uncomfortable homophobic narratives because vampirism has been connected with sexual assault from Dracula onward, and vampires in stories are almost always people who were turned against their will at some point in their life or have turned others.

I do not think any kind of monster in Supernatural has to and always represents queerness anymore than I think Sam having powers/feeling lonely makes his storyline inherently queer (which I don't). I understand that there are at least a couple of metas connecting Dean's experience in this episode to queerness not just because it involves vampires but because it also leads to Lisa and Dean's breakup and because Boris also clearly has a sexual interest in Dean, but while I respect these interpretations (as well as the choice to read vampirism as a metaphor for queerness in the episode) I don't personally find these metas that alluring (at least what I have seen of them). This has partly to do with (1) me having a VERY different take on Dean and Lisa than most of spnblr (I don’t dismiss their relationship as “comphet” for example) and (2) having a different take on Dean's relationship to his sexuality up to this point in the series than a lot of people, but it also has to do with (3) me disliking how this reading of 6.05 leads to uncomfortable linkages between queerness and rape that do not spark joy for me and that I do not think deserve to be treated as a forgone conclusion.

Some of the things I have read before from fans regarding this episode feel a little too close to saying "Dean was attacked by a bisexual man who wanted to fuck him and that means Dean is queer" which I do not find logical and which I think aligns with some pretty harmful ideologies, and if fans choose to believe that Matthews intentionally connects the story with those ideologies (either because he himself believes them or thinks Dean does) that's their prerogative, but I don't think it means when other fans reject that reading or fail to absorb it, that they're ignoring some kind of interpretive forgone conclusion about the "meaning" of the episode or what Dean being turned must represent. This is all media analysis. It is ultimately subjective. There are different takes and perspectives here. I don't think there's an inherently right and correct reading and I do not believe this is the only reading of the episode, and while I'm happy to see people play in the sandbox writing whatever metas they'd like about it, and I think one can build up a lot of support as desired, and there's certainly commentary one can make about this episode being homophobic/biphobic regardless, I don't personally think what Brett Matthews wanted me to get out of this is that being assaulted makes you gay and ruins families.

I do think this episode has a lot to say about Dean's relationship to his body and how it has been objectified and used because he has been treated as a weapon or a tool for almost his entire life, and how Dean has internalized that. I do think this episode has a lot to say about internalizing blame as a victim of a variety of non-consensual experiences—the fear that the things that have been done to you throughout your life have "sullied" you and made you a danger who needs to be put down/who will harm the people you love. This episode has a lot to say about Dean's overactive sense of responsibility and guilt, his tendency to internalize blame for things he can't control, and his failure to see that he was a victim in many MANY situations where he was absolutely victimized. From my perspective, vampirism in this episode serves as a metaphor for all of Dean's trauma (from hell, from being raised as a hunter and never having any other choices, from all the people he's lost, from a variety of non-consensual experiences, etc) and how he internalizes the effects of that trauma on himself psychologically as something that has turned him into a monster who cannot grasp happiness or safety and instead will ruin everyone else's if he tries. It is devastatingly tragic and painful to watch. This is also why I happen to be very uncomfortable with a lot of deanlisa takes that criticize Lisa for (in usually nicer words but nontheless) allowing a filthy animal like Dean into her home and how she should have known he was disgusting damaged goods.

Still slightly damp from the shower, you finally felt somewhat ready to study. You meant to do it earlier, really. But so many things had gotten in the way: a new update on a mobile game, leaks of the next Attack on Giants episode, a cat you saw in the lobby.

You weren't procrastinating! It'd get done eventually—just as soon as you watched a video Moth had sent. You eagerly pressed the play button on your phone, bright eyed as you walked into the living room.

A bowl of water and peas was placed on the bare ground in front of a pair of hungry ducks running towards the camera. Before they could descend in a frenzy on the food, your screen froze, then turned dark.

One pale, scarred hand grabbed the phone from your grasp. “Hey!” you complained and turned towards the offender. You didn’t think to wonder how they shut off your phone before even touching it.

[REDACTED] stared down at you with a pointed look, the device held high above your head. “Didn't y’say you were going to study after your shower? Exam’s in a few days.” He nodded towards your textbook on the coffee table, practically collecting dust.

You huffed and reached up in an attempt to grab it. “I've got time! Just give it back.” The phone was quickly placed in your outstretched hand before you knew it. “Oh. Thank you.” 

As you turned it back on and plopped down on the couch, the dark-haired hacker was mentally kicking himself. They really needed to figure out how to say no to you. It was a long standing habit that would only be a hindrance now. He knew how upset you’d be if you didn’t do well on your exam.

He took a seat next to you. “Please, Angel,” they tried again, gently pulling you closer to get your attention. “Even if it’s only for an hour, y’need to study.” The sudden pleading frown on your face had him fighting his instincts that were desperate to give in. Not to mention the abandoned puppy vibes you gave off with your wet hair. He managed to tear his gaze away, though his resolve was already crumbled into nothing. 

In fact, now that he reconsidered it, you didn't need to study. They'd just hack your exam score in the system. Or make the whole thing simply go away. Bribe the professor, find where they live and—

“I guess you’re right,” you sighed, unaware of what was going through his mind. All the scheming grinded to a halt the moment he heard your breathtaking voice. “But it's so hard to get anything done. I'm not sure if I'll be able to stay on track by myself.” You worriedly glanced at the intimidating cover of your textbook.

Your boyfriend was eager to help, but just as eager to jump at the chance of being in your presence for longer. Immediately, he offered an idea. “I could stay with you. Keep y’focused on work ‘n all that.” 

The worry on your face melted away, replaced with a smile of relief. “That'd be a huge help.” You looked down at the phone still in your hand before sheepishly holding it out to them. “Maybe you should hold onto this, though. Just in case?”

Without a word he took it to hide in the confines of his pocket. As you picked up the textbook and suddenly curled up at their side to get comfortable, the familiar scent of your shampoo wafted up to their nose. [REDACTED] had to remind himself to stay focused. Nothing would get done if he turned into a distraction.
