Elaphomyces granulatus is a truffle-like fungus that inhabits conifer plantations. It is rarely seen as it grows a few centimeters beneath the surface. It is occasionally parasitised by an earth tongue Tolypocladium capitatum that sprouts from the truffle and heads upwards, breaching the surface so it can deposit its spores on the wind.

FOTD #083 : viscid black earth tongue! (glutinoglossum glutinosum)

the viscid black earth tongue (or glutinous earthtongue) is a saprophytic fungus in the family geoglossaceae. it often grows among moss or in grassy areas :-) it is quite common in the northern hemisphere !!

the big question : can i bite it?? sure - it's edible, but considered "not worth eating". it has been said to be delicious when stewed<3

"the smooth, nearly black, club-shaped fruitbodies grow to heights ranging from 1.5 to 5 cm (0.6 to 2.0 in). the head is up to 0.7 cm (0.3 in) long, & the stipes are sticky."

Day 24 - Language Barrier

Spicy – “Are you kidding me?”

Sometimes all you want to do is read a book, but someone just wants to be your friend. You’d also think a language barrier would keep the conversation short.

Idania jumped at Tristan’s voice. She glanced at the book in her hands and attempted to process the foreign tongue he had thrown at her. Alden had made it abundantly clear that the Taurus did not speak Water, and as he knew that she was not fluent in much else, that she take the language barrier into consideration. She assumed he had given the same talk to Tristan, but his repeating what sounded like a question in his native tongue did nothing to assuage her frustrations.

She had taken Alden’s words to heart, however, and purchased a few books on language learning, supplemented by books found in Garren’s tower. She raised a gesture of One moment please and placed an object in her book to keep her place. She rummaged in her bag for a few moments for the necessary books; a dictionary for Earth to Water and the reverse. Tristan’s brow furrowed as he watched her with curiosity. She held the dictionary to him. It took him a moment to assess it and understand, but he took the book quickly and sat down opposite her. She nodded.

He rifled through the book for the Earthtongue and she glanced at the book she had been reading before he interrupted her. Her tail curled tightly, the stinger swelling slightly with venom.

Tristan made an Aha! noise and pressed a finger into the dictionary. “Read.” He spoke the Waterspeak word clumsily and looked to her expectantly.

She smiled and nodded. She had been reading. Tristan blinked and looked down to the book. He flipped through the pages again, brow furrowed, flipped to the front of the dictionary. Idania distracted herself with a few more sentences.

“What? Read?” Tristan offered a nervous smile.

Idania nodded to him and dropped her crochet hook into the book and started to thumb through her Waterspeak to Earthtongue dictionary to find the proper word. From the rest of their adventure, she gathered that Tristan did not engage with the book she read, either due to age or disinterest or simple lack of knowledge.

She picked a word and flipped through to the translation. “Spicy.” She nodded, hoping her Earthtongue better than his Waterspeak. She had learned a few words and phrases from the other children at the orphanage, or merchants, or during Alden’s language classes, but nothing more.

Tristan’s furrow deepened. He looked to the book, then to her. He made his hands into the shape of a book and mimed licking them. He tilted his head, sure that he had conveyed his question.

She chuckled. “Are you kidding me?” She asked more of herself, in Waterspeak, than him. He responded, having heard her mutter and she shook her head. She had learned the equivalent to Um in Earthtongue and muttered it as she flipped through her dictionary for a better word.

“Love.” She nodded and turned a few pages. “Intense.” Flipped a few pages. “Physical.”

Tristan cleared his throat. He nodded to her, his fingers configured in an Okay sign. She thought that the end of their tribulations, but he started to flip through the dictionary again. She stole a few sentences as he searched.

“Like?” He read the word again and looked up to her, hopeful.

She smiled brightly. She did like these books, these stories, and had even written a few of her own. Some even by her own hand, though she had to thank the Spirits for the ones not from her own imagination.

Tristan’s brow furrowed, though not from misunderstanding. He lifted a hand to his chin and flipped casually through the dictionary. She felt his desire to ask a question, presumably a complex one, and sighed.

“Sire!”
