voicevox humming might also be good for those looking weird metallic noisy vocal synths if they're willing to play with the unpredictability of it because i had akashi on the absolutely wrong range setting for this song and he started breaking down like faulty motor
#he shoulda been at like -10 or somewhere around there but he was at -6#breathier gentle voices+emotions are more effective in humming if you want this echoey metal scraping sound#so like akashi and nurse type t are pretty quiet. and ryuusei has a thousand emotion modes and half of them are whispery#also unrelated since this song has a bunch of glottal stops i decided to finally check if っ works as a phoneme#it does. i dont know why i wasnt sure. its a text-to-speech software primarily and that is. an important part of japanese speech LOL#but it does work in humming which is nice! also unrelated but i just found out the technical name for っ is sokuon#my japanese teachers always just the less fancy term chisai tsu or small tsu depending on language theyre speaking in the moment#its like how i didnt know what a cedilla was called in english for years. i learned about it in school first et en français its cédille#thats how i got a little sweet taste of basic linguistic concepts as a kid in general actually. through language learning classes#you learn a grammar thing for one language and ur like holy shit. what is that. where can i learn more. and then you start googling <3

I met our new mall leader today and ngl I think I made a good impression :D
#chough chatterings#i'm normally super awkward at the best of times never mind meeting new people and ESPECIALLY not superiors#but i feel like i've learned enough about japanese culture now to conduct myself somewhat effectively#instead of being like haha idk what's expected of me guess i'll just run away and hope she doesn't talk to me#plus i was doing a bunch of regular maintenance stuff today anyway (cleaning air filters / checking the doorbell works etc)#and she was like 'ohh thank you so much for helping to keep the classroom in order!'#it's actually the jt's job to do classroom maintenance but i like the jt at this classroom so i help out as much as possible#also bc of train times i have to arrive stupid early and it's like. may as well do something productive with my time#but to her it probably looked like i was going above and beyond. even though i really don't think of it like that#also our new area manager (who's worked in a bunch of different regions) told our supervisor that our team is by far the most professional#she's ever worked with. and she's been at the company for like 15 years

today I messed around in vocaloid 2 (vocaloid 2 Miku dark is my FAVORITE) and made Miku sing rudimentary Japanese phrases I learned in school and it was tiny but I did it and I'm proud of myself. making music in any capacity is my biggest dream but I don't ever take steps towards that goal because I don't know where to start and I'm scared. but today showed me I can do it and it's more accessible than I thought!!!
#i was thinking about how when you're ten and learning to play the recorder in school the first song you learn is hot cross buns#so. i went and made miku sing hot cross buns (hatto kurasu bansu) just to like. interface w the software#because id never opened it until now. because i was scared and didn't know how to use it#but i was always be scared and i will NEVER know how to use it if i never open it!! so i did! and it was fine#then i had miku sing wastashi no namae wa miku desu~ and then ongaku wa suki desu and i actually ended up really liking the melody#i made up for the second line. and i was like I CAN WRITE MUSIC! ANYONE CAN WRITE MUSIC! YOU CAN DO IT BUG!!!!#just gotta try!!!! try is how you learn!!!!! ahhh!!!!#anyways. my first project is making a cover of aegen and my big goal project is to make a cover of the entirety of three cheers#buggie sounds#tuning is not as scary as i thought! idk if im doing it all the way right but it was fun :-)#i really am going to have to redownload a DAW though......#DAWs are fucking scary i dont like them. i used to (try to) make beats in FL studio a decade ago and. idk#daws are strange beasts that bite. not like my kind and simple video editor (side eyes adobe after effects)#i am nervois about doing an actual cover bc i am not sure how capturing a song's vocals will go but.... I'll cross that bridge later#just glad i opened it and tried :-) yippee!#maybe for my first song itll just be japanese 101 and thats like. the schtick.#where is the train station? it is 3pm now. today is sunday. will we go to the ocean tomorrow? i drank coffee this morning. etc

Please don’t compare yourself to my blog because I only mostly show the highlights. And just because I reblog something about studying languages doesn’t mean I’ve actually done much that day!
There’s nothing wrong with taking it slow and enjoying the language! We’re all here to learn because we want to. There’s no pressure to learn quickly. Learning a language is a lifelong journey, and there’s no rush to fluency. Whatever amount you’re doing, it’s okay and you’re welcome on this blog :-)
#Quinn posts#i occasionally get people asking how I study with ADHD#I don’t man!!#I mean I do but I’m not super dedicated or organized or anything#I’m learning languages because I enjoy it#I’m not necessarily a speed runner or an amazing perfect student#I’m dabbling in language for the joy of it and you can too#don’t feel bad for not studying enough#even if you only do a bit every week or month or whatever#slow progress is still progress#you don’t even need to be aiming for so called fluency#Japanese is like#my buddy#I practice and learn it occasionally#when I have time I study it more intensely#I’m not learning the most effective or quickest way#that’s ok :) it’s my hobby#ok lots of tags I just want to be positive and make sure people know they don’t need to be perfect#language#langblr#studyblr#like I worry people see my blog and get the wrong idea#scenic route to fluency#might change that to just. scenic route of language learning or something#i genuinely do not believe you need fluency for learning to be worthwhile at all#anyway

Kuriboh
Now this Kuriboh. This Kuriboh is worthy of being called a fiend type monster. Just look at him. Funny how a little texturing on the fur and hands plus an angry expression can change the look of something completely. His fur even looks spikier at the ends somehow, not to mention that you can actually see his little arms here. You know, part of the more fiendish look may be that they decided to make his pupils much smaller here, showing off more of the yellow part of his eyes. He's still cute regardless.
Rating: 10/10, perfectly captures a different side of the Kuriboh we all know and love
#Kuriboh#yugioh#yu-gi-oh#ygo#Duel Monsters#Yami Yugi#GX#Dimitri#Effect Monster#Dark#Fiend#Alternate Artwork#I was today years old when I learned Kuriboh and Goombas are named the same thing in Japanese

language is so crazy 🥰 I have learned enough kana to be able to sound out the sound effects in manga! and I still don't understand most of them <3
#I do occasionally stumble across sound effects that I understand—like ''pa-chi'' for setting a Go stone on a board#or ''hik-ku'' for ''hiccup''#but so many of them I just don't get. being able to sound them out explained nothing <3#slkdfjslkdfjsdflkj#I'll figure some of them out from context and get used to Japanese onomatopoeia I'm sure but it's kind of hilarious#that I expected to understand sound effects right away (that'll be easy right?) and um. nope!#Robin learns Japanese#in happier news though I AM getting FASTER at sounding out kana!

So I initially just wanted to add an "acktually, the dots mostly represent fire, not legs, and 熊 is also used to describe a big fire, isn't that neat! And please credit the Chinese language for the characters next time :D"
But my need to double check things made me dig a little deeper, and uh. That's not how it worked actually.
熊 is not 能 on legs.
能 WAS bear.
Look, a chonky fella with ears, legs and a little tail! That got stylized over the ages. Since OP has decided to skip over this not "too important" bit, I'm going to pick up slack and point at how the bear's legs became the two "匕"-s, the upper left part is the head, and the 月 radical, while meaning "moon” on its own, takes on a "flesh" vibe when it's part of a character. So the modern character is still a chonky fella with legs, but square.
What happens next is a bit blurry (since Baidu results are various levels of source: Just Trust Me), but people started using this word for “bear" to also express energy/ability and just. decided that 能 should exclusively mean that.
Using 熊 to mean "bear" has some element of chicken-and-egg-ness. Some places say that when people wanted a new bear character, they added fire under its original form to express how bears were warm, or could survive forest fires, and the "big fire" meaning came later. Others say that 熊 meant a big fire in the first place (a fire so strong it's like a bear, if you will), and when people decided they wanted 能 for themselves, the bear meaning got moved over.
From the above picture, you can tell that 熊 had some form of beastness pretty early on. The second character already shows the "能 over fire (火)" structure, and a cursory search says it existed in the hundreds of BC times.
So basically, humans invented a word for "bear", decided they didn't want to share an adjective with an animal (???like why), and lit a fire under it to chase away the original meaning. Now in modern times, 熊 can still mean a stubborn person, while another animal is used to describe impressive stuff: 牛, aka bull/cow. The animals still win.

What I love about Japanese
Sometimes it’s frustrating. I’m learning it because I love anime and want to be able to engage with the culture, but all the shounen I-belive-in-my-friends inspiration can’t help you when you’re faced with a list of 1000 kanji to learn before you’re at the reading level of a five-year-old. Sometimes I wish I’d picked a language with a writing system that made sense.
But then once in a while something comes along that makes it all worth it.
Now this. This is the kanji for ability.
It’s a nice enough kanji, has some radicals of its own but isn’t too full of itself. Learning all about it isn’t too important, what you need to know is that this is the character for ability.
Now.
This.
This here is the kanji for bear. As in the animal, not the verb.
That’s right. According to the Japanese language, a bear is ability
ON LEGS
#languages#japanese#chinese#as much as I joked about it#I still don't know the ratio of amused/annoyed I should get at a post about how Japanese is so cool#and then only talks about Kanji without crediting its origin#you know like 漢字? Han (ie Chinese) words?#and ones that are still in active use in China no less#when there are many Kanji that Japanese is effectively preserving since they've fallen out of use in China#or words that Japanese has invented and passed back to Chinese eg telephone (!)#like yeah I can't get too annoyed at OP since they're probably just ignorant#and stuff like four dots = fire comes from learning Chinese as a kid#but then it goes to - so Japanese instructors and materials don't talk about this?#No mention that literally Han Words came from China?#Nothing about radicals?#Yeah children learn from rote#but are teen and adult beginner materials really not utilizing their higher cognitive ability and introducing these concepts#“the writing system doesn't make sense” my sibling in Yesu they took Chinese characters and split one language into three systems#and didn't bother telling learners about it

japanese is so right for having a doubling of words (i.e. 中々、色々、様々) mean either different new things that are still fundamentally related to the initial word, or just mean the same word but just More
#i enjoy it lots#still very new to japanese at this point in time (10 months into daily study) but it's a fun part#love learning an entirely new system of grammar too#i was obsessed w english grammar growing up bc it's very cool to know the building blocks of how a language works#and starting from effectively ground zero is a gift really

talking to him more very much achieved. we just talked for like 4 hours in the kitchen holy shit I need to sleep
#I went into the kitchen to wash up wanting it to be a few minutes to get back to my parents by he came home at the same time#unsure what just happened honestly! as in I’m not sure what is going on from his end of the interaction#because I have never met anyone who would just do that before. like four hours straight when before we’d talked for periods of idk 10minutes#and he WAS engaged the whole time#granted he spent a significant amount of time talking. he talked far more than I did which is often the case but Im not sure how I felt here#I think he gets excited abt individual topics and. gets carried away is the wrong word but he gets absorbed in it#he spent a while talking me through the very complex maths he’s been doing recently#(he studies maths. also abt to start masters.) and was assuming a much stronger mathematical background than I have but I understood a bunch#he IS very good at explaining things and I was interested to a point but unfortunately I was not going to ask about individual theorems and#shit like that at 11pm. it was still super interesting I’m not downplaying that but I didn’t know half of what he brought up#there was basically no way I was going to understand much more than the vague concept anyway#anyway! also extremely into food. especially into traditional chinese cooking which is cool as fuck and I now know so much more abt food#I have never personally cared much at all about food. I enjoy when taste good and I enjoy cooking. he’s into the precision cooking#that he told me apparently Chinese and French food is the best in the world at. meant to be amazing at going for specific effects#oh he came back from a musical! apparently abt a woman with bipolar that was on in London I might check what that was. next to normal#cried 7 times. apparently he’s super into stories with that kinda emotional payoff. started telling me later abt tokyo animation#priest if you’re already seeing this I WILL be asking you abt it later but pls tell me whatever. he likes clannad and sound euphorium#bunch of others but those are the ones he talked most abt and started tearing up when he played me a song from clannad where the baby’s born#so I think biggest things I’ve learned are that he’s impressively in touch w his emotions (further damaging the straight guy case)#regardless it’s just nice to talk to a guy who talks abt stuff so openly it’s very refreshing#unsure how cultural differences factor in here. I would’ve expected it to go the other way but possible this is a degree more normal#and he’s very very academically minded. he learned Japanese bc was bored after high school and is doing a WHOLE lot of extra maths for fun#socially definitely very competent he’s very good at talking but a little more focused inward.#definitely did not notice the (admittedly extremely gentle) flirting throughout like when I complimented his bracelet#(this cute gold year of the rat thing his mum got him)#so yeah. was very fun talking to him. will process this for a while#I think this has definitely established that we could be friends if either of us pursue that after summer which is very cool!! will see#luke.txt

DAISUKI ★ N.RK

SYNOPSIS: in which you surprise your boyfriend by speaking japanese.
PAIRING: nishimura riki x fem! reader
GENRE: fluff, established relationship, humor
WORD COUNT: 1.0k
likes, reblogs, and comments are always appreciated. let me know your thoughts!

“kuso.” riki mutters under his breath, causing you to turn your head toward him.
the two of you are sprawled comfortably on the couch, riki focused on his game, clicking rapidly at the buttons of his controller, completely immersed. while you scroll mindlessly on your phone, both of you exist in your own little bubble.
“what does that mean?” you ask, curiosity piqued at the word you've heard riki mutter multiple times. though you already have a vague guess.
riki glances at you briefly before slowing down his movements on the controller. “nothing,” he brushes off, returning his gaze to the screen. you hum not don’t pushing it further.
the night drags on, and soon, the two of you decide to watch an anime together—a movie you’ve both been waiting to release for some time now. nestled comfortably in each other’s arms, you watch as the story unfolds. before you know it, the credits roll. the two of you done for the night, you both get ready for bed.
waiting for riki to finish up in the bathroom, you lie alone in bed and remember the moment earlier. ever so curious, you grab your phone and search for the word riki often mutters under his breath. no doubt it was in his mother tongue, japanese.
the search results make you chuckle, confirming your suspicion—the words he often whispers are curse words. falling into a rabbit hole of japanese vocabulary, you practice the words that show up silently.
“daisuki?” your eyes scan the screen as you scroll down a beginner’s guide. “'daisuki' is a japanese word and expression that means to like or love something a great amount.” your gaze lingers on the next line.
“it's often used to say you love someone.”
hmm. these words might come in handy.
the following days with riki are chaotic, to say the least. your boyfriend always keeps you on your toes, constantly teasing you, play-fighting with you (seriously, are we ten?), and worst of all, stealing your food. after a long day of dealing with his hyper energy, you sigh, in desperate need of a time-out.
your eyes trail to the couch and the controller left unattended on the coffee table, practically calling your name. you plop down, turning on the game, controller in hand. before long, you’re fully immersed, fingers gripping the buttons tightly as gunfire and other game sound effects echo in the room. the victory chime rings, and a smug grin spreads across your face. clicking start, you prepare for another round—
until a hand swiftly snatches the controller away.
“riki,” you whine, standing from your spot to reclaim it. agile and a lot taller than you, he swiftly dodges your movements.
“nu-uh,” he tuts, shaking his head in amusement as he moves further away. rounding back to the couch, he plops down. “it’s my turn now.”
you roll your eyes, huffing in annoyance at having been cut off short of your game.
“uzai.” you mutter the japanese word foreign on your tongue, sending a death glare in riki’s way, sitting comfortably in your spot.
you knew the word would elicit some sort of reaction, and you were right.
“what?” riki looks at you immediately, his expression unreadable, though amusement flickers in his eyes.
you take a few steps forward, arms crossed. “i said,” you repeat slowly, “uzai.” you try to sound confident in your pronunciation, though you barely remember the proper way to say it from the japanese guide you read.
riki chuckles, his confusion morphing into pure amusement. “hontou ni?” he replies, clicking start on his game. his response making you annoyed at yet another phrase you had no idea the meaning to.
“where’d you learn that word?” he asks as he begins his round, eyes still locked onto the screen.
“google. where else?” you shrug, plopping down beside him, watching intently as the game unfolds.
riki doesn’t respond to your sarcasm, too focused on his game. you smirk, seizing the opportunity and snatching the controller from his grasp.
“hey!” he exclaims, frowning at you, lips tugging into a pout as he watches you start playing.
you only chuckle. “you started it.”
things wind down as the night progresses, the two of you tangled on the couch, exhaustion finally settling in. an anime plays softly on the screen, but neither of you pay much attention. you snuggle closer to riki, sighing in contentment at the much more peaceful atmosphere.
just as you feel yourself slipping into sleep, riki speaks.
“since when did you start speaking japanese?” his voice is low, curious.
you hesitate, suddenly feeling shy. “uhm…” you start, trying to find the words. “you say things i don’t understand all the time.” you explain. “so, naturally, i got curious and looked them up.” you shift slightly. “i guess i just picked some up. don’t blame me.” you finish off your explanation.
riki lets out a soft laugh, his chest vibrating beneath your cheek. “that really caught me off guard, baby.” he tilts his head down to look at you. another thought crosses his mind. “what other words did you learn?” he asks, interest piqued. secretly, just wanting to hear you speak japanese again. even, if it’s just to tell him off.
you hum, feigning sleepiness. “there is this one word,” you murmur, a smirk ghosting your lips as you remember its meaning.
riki watches you, anticipation clear in his eyes.
you pause for a second, recalling the pronunciation as best as you can.
“daisuki?” your voice is soft, hesitant.
riki freezes. did he hear that right?
“again?” he asks, voice barely above a whisper. the atmosphere shifts, the teasing laced with something more intimate.
this time, you say it firmly. “daisuki.” you lift yourself from his chest to meet his gaze, a soft smile playing on your lips.
riki groans, heat rising to his cheeks. “such a menace.” he mutters, looking down at you fondly.
finding the effect of the word on him amusing, you tease further. “daisuki, riki.” you say clearer.
his breath hitches. he drags a hand through his hair before shaking his head, a quiet chuckle escaping his lips.
“daisuki.” he says back to you. this time it was his time to make you flustered as he pulled you even closer.
“guess i should learn more words now,” you muse, laughing softly against his chest.

fuck it's been like a month since i read csm
#so behind *sigh*#i don't mind being behind but if i get too far behind then i can't use viz to read the recent chapters and instead have to use sketchy site#i don't have a problem using sketchy sites to read manga it's just that it gets annoying having to avoid all the ads#plus fan translations aren't the most reliable thing#i say this after reading the the trimax fan translation#and subsequently hearing that the official translation does NOT in fact misgender elendira frequently or use a shit ton of slurs on one pag#also that one manga that i read where that was a sound effect that was VERY CLEARLY supposed to be 'crack' was translated as 'quack' instea#i can be more lenient on that one though bc there's no official english translation#at this point i just need to speedrun the language-learning process and start reading manga in japanese lmao

I would like to bring your attention to two fundraisers that are near and dear to my heart.
@elhamhamdan-gaza is a young woman trying to survive in Gaza with her family. She was a top student at university until October 2023, when she and her family were displaced from their home in Khan Younis and forced to flee to Rafah. After the invasion in Rafah, they returned to their home in Khan Younis only to find it burned. They had no choice but to live in it. Elham and her family desperately need funds for blankets and clothes, because winter is here and nights in Gaza are very cold right now.
Elham's campaign is very low on funds! So far they have only been able to raise £594 and they desperately need more support. Please donate to them if you are able, and share this post and campaign with as many people as you can.
This campaign was verified by the Butterfly Effect Project (instagram) and is number 1180 on their spreadsheet, which you can access through the link on their instagram profile.
You can contribute to Elham's campaign by clicking on the link below:
Secondly, @drdarine is a young woman who is a medical student in Gaza. Despite being displaced and suffering hardships we can only imagine, Darine is continuing her studies and helping out others in the refugee camps and shelters in southern Gaza. Her family consists of seven people, one of them being my friend @dawoudi who is selflessly and unfailingly helping many other families in Gaza by verifying their fundraisers and promoting them on Tumblr. Everyday I see more campaigns added that he has verified, providing an important service to the many families in Gaza that need our help.
Darine's family has been fundraising since February, which is almost ten months! Despite that, they have only been able to raise $5,765, 19% of their goal. Progress on their campaign is extremely slow, often needing to wait multiple days for another donation to come in. We can do better than that.
This campaign was vetted by @gazavetters, and is number 15 on their spreadsheet, which you can find in the pinned post on their profile.
