Union Square Events take place here and there's an ice skating rink in the winter months. The ice skating rink scene from Duke's route is one of my favorites. And iirc, he also proposed here to the MC.

Dolores Park A lot of characters had scenes here! I still remember the scene that took place at night, where Andi took off her mask to kiss MC. (Ok, but the one that killed me the most was that scene with young Renzei from Razi's route.) From this park you can get a very good view of the San Francisco skyline.

Bay View Another popular spot for scenes in the series. The best view is at Pier 7 along the Embarcadero. You'll see the iconic lamp posts and benches. There was a heart felt scene that took place here from Renzei's route at nighttime.

Downtown I couldn't get the exact location like the one in-game, but there's a really nice similar spot at the intersection of Powell St and California St that a lot of photographers go to because it's up a big hill. If you stand in the middle of the crosswalk on Powell you can get a good view of the city. Instead of Optimus tower, you'll see the iconic triangle shape Transamerica tower.

Optimus The tower which Optimus is inspired by is actually the Salesforce Tower. You can walk around the plaza and transit center nearby, but obviously can't go up to the offices. But, I'm guessing the design of Optimus' interior might have been inspired by the Salesforce transit center.

It's nearly ten years since I wrote about Legs - a large macrame scultpure in the Embarcadero BART/Muni station in San Francisco - on this blog. At that point, it was covered in grime (and had been for decades), and BART was planning to remove it. Those plans were executed soon afterwards (I think the work was done in 2015).

Legs was returned to Shawcroft, who passed away in 2021. The sculpture - still covered in BART brake dust and other dirt - was eventually removed from storage and "taken to its final resting place in the Yolo County Landfill" in 2022.

In the meantime, however, Bill Hocker, who took the photo I included in my previous post, posted a few more images of the artwork in its newly-installed prime, from

the documentation of two installations, monumental works of macramé by textile artist Barbara Shawcroft, in 1979.

(The other was in the Embarcadero Center, and is also no longer present.)

I'm sad that BART never figured out how to maintain that piece of public art, and that it's now lost as an object. On the other hand, I'm happy that I can see - and share - photographs of the vibrant, fascinating work, in its full glory, from near the time of its installation.

FILM REVIEW — Iran's `Gabbeh' Weaves Spell of Longing

Nature in its impersonal vastness and, oddly enough, carpet weaving are fascinating companions in the visually enchanting "Gabbeh," a new romantic fantasy from Iran. Using weaving as a metaphor, the film looks at human longing and connections between generations in a nomadic tribe on the steppes of Asia.

Films of any kind from Iran are rare here. In Iran itself, a struggling government-run film industry is subject to censorship and Islamic law. "Gabbeh," opening today at Embarcadero Center Cinema and the UC Theatre at Berkeley, was made by Mohsen Makhmalbaf ("The Peddler"), one of Iran's most respected directors. But the film, after its script was originally given official sanction, was later inexplicably banned.

The term "gabbeh" refers to a type of carpet whose images tell a story -- a family's joys, the heroic deeds of a young man, or, as in the case of "Gabbeh," a romance in which a young woman is destined by love (or death) to be swept away.

Makhmalbaf initially was to make a documentary about the weaving of the Ghashghai tribe in southeastern Iran, a place of formidable open spaces, moody skies and extremes of weather. But he was struck by how the craft and its visual poetry were inseparable from the rich human experiences of the weavers.

Perhaps the way "Gabbeh" leaps from documentary to the dreamy fantasy of a young woman (Shaghayegh Djodat) longing for a mysterious horseman to carry her away took the movie far from the original idea that officials had approved.

Not all of Makhmalbaf's efforts to synthesize weaving and an evocative story (with some hokey special effects) are successful. But the photography is fresh and lovely. Frequently the camera draws back to show arid mountains, a shimmering lake, grasslands, grazing livestock -- and by contrast, the tiny imprint of humans, except in the beautiful carpets through which they eloquently express their history.

I bought a Muni Passport for unlimited rides on buses, trams, and the famous cable cars. For $23, I had a one-day passport that let me explore the entire city. I also found that walking was a great way to see the neighborhoods up close, from the colorful streets of the Mission District to the bustling activity at Fisherman’s Wharf.

2. Free Attractions: There are plenty of free things to do in San Francisco. I started my day with a stroll along the Embarcadero, taking in views of the Bay Bridge. Then I walked up the famous Lombard Street, known as the “crookedest street in the world.” Visiting Chinatown was another highlight—it’s one of the oldest and most vibrant Chinatowns in the U.S. I didn’t spend a dime, and yet these were some of the most memorable parts of my trip.

3. Affordable Eats: San Francisco is famous for its food, but dining out can get pricey. I found affordable options by eating at local food trucks and small eateries. The food trucks at Off the Grid events were a particular favorite, where I sampled everything from tacos to dim sum without spending more than $10 per meal. I also discovered that many bakeries in the city offer “happy hour” prices on their pastries in the late afternoon.

4. Budget-Friendly Accommodations: Instead of staying in a hotel, I opted for a hostel in the city center. It was not only affordable but also a great way to meet fellow travelers. Another tip: book your stay well in advance. This can save you a significant amount on accommodation costs. I also considered staying in nearby cities like Oakland or Berkeley, where prices are generally lower.

5. Discount Passes: I bought a CityPASS, which provided entry to popular attractions like the California Academy of Sciences and a bay cruise for $76. This saved me nearly 50% compared to buying tickets separately.

Bond for Oakland cultural institutions placed on November ballot

Nowadays, there are many interesting news reports in Oakland, CA. In a recent news article, there was a topic about a bond. Basically, it was mentioned in reports that the Oakland City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to place a $182 million bond on the November ballot to benefit five of the city's cultural institutions. By the way, if it’s approved by voters, the money would be spent on infrastructure projects at the Chabot Space and Science Center, Children's Fairyland, the Oakland Museum of California, Peralta Hacienda Historical Park and the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts. Lastly, such projects could include rehabilitation, construction, safety and security, exhibits and collections storage and visitor amenities, among other things.

You can’t climb Morro Rock, but you can look for the peregrine falcons that nest there. And it’s not just there you’ll see birds: So many of them love the Morro Bay area that the Audubon Society has dubbed it one of the country’s best places for bird watchers. There’s even a birding festival every Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. Nature lives in the water, too, of course—check it out by taking a whale-watching cruise or stopping by the free Estuary Nature Center, a popular hangout for otters and other sea creatures.

The town is an ambulatory paradise as well: Beaches stretch north and south of town, perfect for strolling with a view of Morro Rock. Landlubbers can hike the area’s many trails or simply explore the Embarcadero, a waterfront street with shops and restaurants. Of interest to Half Ironman enthusiasts is the Ironman 70.3 Morro Bay event that happens annually in May, and consists of a 1.2-mile protected swim in Morro Bay, followed by the 56-mile biking section through rolling hills and vineyards, and finally a 13.1-mile run that finishes along the Embarcadero.
