THE PLATFORM (2019) Grade: B-

Reminded me a lot of the #Cube from 1997. This was worth a watch. The 2nd act is good, I'm on the fence with the ending. No surprise they're planing a sequel. Good enough story that carries you.

'El hoyo' era una largometraje que se estrenó en los cines españoles sin armar demasiado ruido. Meses después llegó al catálogo de Netflix en todo el mundo y se convirtió en un fenómeno mundial y la película en habla no inglesa más vista de todos los tiempos en la plataforma.

Es inevitable que 'Cube' venga a la cabeza del espectador cuando conoce el punto de partida de 'El hoyo', pero lo cierto es que son películas muy diferentes más allá del agobio inherente a la ambientación claustrofóbica de la que hacen gala ambos títulos. Aquí se tiende más a la alegoría social, conectando el mensaje de la película con una visión demoledora sobre la condición humana.

La película muestra dos caras a la hora de abordar eso, con la primera incidiendo más en los mecanismos detrás de un experimento que nunca llegaremos a entender de forma completa -porque lo que interesa a sus responsables no es eso, pues aquí la distopía es un pretexto más que el fin-, valiéndose para ello de las mordaces reflexiones que realiza el personaje interpretado por Zorion Eguileor, del cual hasta resulta obvio decir que se trata de lo mejor de la función.

'El hoyo' tiene un enfoque más íntimo en esos minutos centrándose más en la relación entre sus dos personajes principales para familiarizarnos con el escenario al mismo punto que se nos plantea el mensaje, tanto físico como mental, del personaje interpretado con bastante fortuna por Iván Massagué.

"Hay tres clases de personas: los de arriba, los de abajo y los que caen". Con una sentencia tan demoledora, arranca esta película española que nos lleva a conocer un particular centro de reclusión con unas estrictas normas. Goreng despierta en una celda de uno de los pisos intermedios de una gran cárcel vertical. Ingresó en ella de forma voluntaria porque deseaba dejar de fumar y leer el Quijote, pero lo que no sabía es que además se había metido un grave problema, como le hace saber su compañero. 

Una gran mesa colmada de manjares exquisitos se prepara cada mañana en el piso superior y va bajando, nivel a nivel, para alimentar a todos los reclusos. Son dos por nivel y solo pueden comer por un tiempo limitado, sin guardarse nada. Cada mes, cambian de lugar ocupando un nuevo nivel que se decide al azar. Cuanto más abajo les toca estar, más difícil es que lleguen a catar la comida.

Evidentemente, el edificio de la película "El hoyo" es una metáfora de la sociedad: en la cima disfrutan los poderosos, indolentes a lo que tienen por debajo; en el fondo, los olvidados y los que ni siquiera llegan a contarlo. Cuando los de abajo ascienden, acaparan; cuando los de arriba bajan imploran.

Los funcionarios, personificados en una excelente Antonia San Juan, reflejan a las instituciones y en gran medida su grado de desconocimiento de la propia realidad con la que tienen que lidiar, a pesar de que intenten obrar de buena fe.

"El hoyo" es una de las mejores propuestas de cine español, casi diría que es de visionado obligatorio por eso le ponemos cuatro estrellitas ⭐⭐⭐⭐

It isn’t enough for your movie to contain symbolism and allegories. It must also say something and give something to those who "don't get it". Even if you somehow miss what The Platform is actually about, it works. Grotesque, frightening, and suspenseful, it’ll make you think too. Even with some elements of the conclusion not quite adding up, it's smart.

Goreng (Iván Massagué) wakes up in a “Vertical Self-Management Center”, a sort of prison/testing institution that places two inmates on each of its many floors. His “partner” Trimagasi (Zorion Eguileor) explains that food is delivered by a platform that allows those below to eat the leftovers of those above. As the supplies diminish with each floor, those at the bottom struggle to survive.

The Platform begins with a great, simple premise. Each month, everyone is given a new floor. Also, each person is allowed one item of their choice when they arrive. Poor Goreng chose a book. You know others brought something a little bit more useful in case they wake up on a low floor next to someone determined to survive. For the moment, things are ok. He’s a naive dreamer, his cellmate is a bit of a curmudgeon but he’s street-wise. It makes for a good dynamic as we learn the rules of this place.

Let’s set aside the metaphor and focus on the situation as presented. It’s terrific. Goreng wakes up on a relatively safe floor. What happens next month? Instantly, you’ve got moral dilemmas and tension. The situation gets more complicated the more you learn about the people and the world they inhabit. What security measures are in place to ensure things are “fair”? How can they be exploited? What are the Administration's true intentions? Piecing it together is loads of fun. You try to picture what you'd do if you were in this scenario. The system isn’t fair. You want to blame someone. The people at the top? Obviously but there’s always someone above them. A revolution's got to come. But how?

Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia with a screenplay by David Desolations and Pedro Rivero, you're given a lot to think about. Yes, it’s often pretty gross but the stomach churning images are necessary and there’s plenty of humour to make the violence and gore digestible. The brutality helps drive the point The Platform is making. This place gets more hellish the lower you go. Whether it’s the system, the people or a combination of both responsible matters little to those at the bottom. They aren’t in a position to make a difference. Who will step up? Everything serves a purpose, even the aspect of the conclusion that doesn’t quite hold up logically or metaphorically. Film-wise, it does. It’s a big twist that’ll have to itching to go back to the beginning and watch the whole thing again. The Platform is the kind of movie you want to gather around with friends and discuss at length. The Platform

This movie in from Netflix is crazy. Like for me, there’s nothing you can get from watching it. The end was wtf. Did they all want to go to the platform just to die?

However the cinematography, the actors were great. Just the story that it wants to imply was good but not a satisfying ending.
