Onto volume 3!

The looks vash and ww share at the end last volume and now. Ww’s first though is that vash knows what s up and also is a bastard. Which yeah, but also I think vash look says clearly “I know I can trust you with this”. despite the ordeal with rai-dei that clearly still affects them – especially Wolfwood – vash seems certain on where Wolfwood stands in that fight. I mena, after his immediate reaction to leonofs play…

I love seeing Wolfwood fight. No words to eloquently describe it but damn

I think it’s very interesting how many people (including ww) that fight vash see the pain, the anger, the emptiness and all in his eyes. And they are not WRONG but at the same time no one seems to realize that despite this all, vash still is full of genuine love and hope as well. with vash that is not mutually exclusive.

They never say it but c’mon, its clear vash has AT LEAST a general idea what wolfwoods deal is or at the very least that has ulterior motives and is not just tagging with vash for the fun of it. At the same time, literally none of the gung ho guns has even a silver of trust in ww loyalty. Which, fair enough. I don’t think ww has much of a set loyalty at that point beyond  trying not to die and keeping the orphanage as save as he can.

Okay, look, vash is getting through a lot, all the time. And I know there is worse to come, yet what leonof does to vash with the puppets looking like the people from home attacking him and just…. Everything about that is a special case of fucking evil man.

Milly and meryl to wolfwoods rescue. What a break in the tension haha. Sorry ninelives, you weren’t prepared for them

There is something objectively really funny about meryl and milly in this. like, they just so happened to find Jessica, get back to the hidden city vash calls home, accidentally save Wolfwood and then just.. decide, jup we gotta help nurse that one. like they have so little context for the whole mess, for this hidden city, anything really. Hell, they barely have context for Wolfwood! They literally just met him briefly on the bus ride after he nearly dried up in the desert… then they saw him two years later with vash during the whole assassin insurance agent thing but it’s not like they said anything to him then. Even funnier from the point of view of the people there. “you know that guy?” – “sorta. He’s a priest we met once when he was stranded in the desert like two years ago. Come to think of it, last we saw him he was with vash”

not to mention how do they know vash? well they are working for an insurance company investigating all the property damage vash causes

Home took quite the hit and oh man vash feels so guilty about it all but luida makes it clear he is family and if anything, he and Wolfwood saved them. And judging by the other peoples reaction or lack of disagreement, they see it like that too. Like vash feels he needs to do it all alone and there are many people out there that hurt him but there are also the people that love him so, so much

Oh Wolfwood. Whatever he’s dreaming, it has him sniffle… but as soon as he wakes up he’s like, wtf and ouch, then the next thing he does is argue with vash. in like the span of two pages

so, vash thanking Wolfwood who immediately points out that he killed. To which Vash acknowledges that is true but also that Wolfwood spilling blood did save a lot of people. That is what I meant in my last post about ‘vash being too caught up in his own way of living’ and his personal moral code. What happened at home doesn’t make vash change his own actions or believes but I think he realized in that moment that he wasn’t fair to Wolfwood before. It was a bit of a reality check id say. He accused Wolfwood of being a coward and giving up easily, but it’s not at all about taking the easy way out for Wolfwood. Its him doing what he can and NEEEDS to in order to keep himself and other save. vash may not agree with it but he’s starting to understand Wolfwood better. I think vash is so used to do things on his own and not having companions for any extended periods of time that it can be easy to forget that what applies for you will not applies for others or be feasible. Or the only right thing to do.

Vash showing the girls the deep sleep chambers. I think there is something really sweet to it. Like he’s so happy to show them something that is also special to him.

See, we know knives sent Wolfwood to be vash’s guid or whatever you wanna call it. So it’s kind of easy to forget (and I haven’t quite realized the degree of it before reading trimax) how little Wolfwood actually knows. I mean, he did impersonate chapel so… right until he met vash ans knives in jeneora rock, Wolfwood clearly had no idea what these two were capable off. And he has realized vash isn’t your regular human but I think only after seeing the picture with Jessica does he realize truly just how far away from human vash is. Like, some of the gung ho guns, even ww, push whats normal human too but vash is another level.

The conversation with ww and luida. It gives us some insight on vash. but its also kinda funny because it basically boils down to:

WW: what the fuck is he and what the hell is his deal?

Luida: well, hes not really human but he’s not trying to set himself apart much. Been around for a really long time, most of which is actually really horrible for him. But he’s just out there, trying to help where he can, being kind, just an overall nice guy don’tcha think?

I’m not actually sure how much luida really knows about vash. she sure knows about knives and I think july and stuff too aand obviously how he doesn’t really age and all. But I’m not sure she knows about the fall or vash as an independent plant specifically. But I don’t think it even matters in that scene. Because what she says is yes, vash is not a normal human but she puts all the focus on what kind of PERSON he is above everything else.

Which I think is especially perfect with Wolfwood, who at that point is still very much struggling to understand vash beyond the rumors, the destruction and his unnatural… everything. Mostly because vash as a person isn’t making much sense to ww currently (its ok ww vash is a complicated guy)

Trimax Volume 3 time! This one's light on the analysis because it was mostly just The Horrors of Puppetry and Soft Hospital Beds. But there's some stuff here.

First of all, yikes, the body horror. I was joking with a friend who recently got into The Locked Tomb about how our hyperfixations are both Body Horror in Space and I almost doubted myself. I think on my first read I blocked this shit out of my memory.

ok moving on! Hospital shit! This is basically fanfic to me. I love this part.

SO. After the Intense "Shoot" conversation, this is !!!! HUGE. Vash knows his ideals are skewed, but he still can't bring himself to kill, for Rem's sake. This is the first crack in his morality armor. And he's grateful that Wolfwood doesn't share the same ideals, grateful for Wolfwood's ability to murder. On the flippity flop, Wolfwood... hates that he can kill so well. He absolutely despises himself for it, so much so that when he was choking out Ninelives, he had to keep reminding himself of the orphanage just to keep going with the brutal thing. This moment of vulnerability from Vash then makes Wolfwood grumpy and frustrated, which is so... AUGH. They're trying so hard to understand each other. That's love, baby!

so uh. I think it's also really important that Wolfwood also has a conversation with Luida, trying to figure out just what Vash is. He finds out that Vash is essentially immortal in this volume, after all. And poor Wolfwood has to grapple with the fact that, while he's a mortal man who's killing just to survive, Vash is an immortal man who won't even use his powers to save himself - he just eeks by well enough to make sure he saves everyone else. Adding more salt into Wolfwood's emotional wounds, huh ("Is this some kind of attempt at redemption?"). Also important to note that Vash is only covered in scars because he won't use his powers. I think this is an important distinction from Stampede, where at least where that is early on in the story, Vash really doesn't have control over any of them. I dunno, maybe someone who's done more research on it would have more to weigh in on that.

It's also known that Vash hates his scars, but I forget if this is just an anime thing - can someone confirm if this is present in Trimax too? If it is, then there's another layer to this - he hates his scars but not enough to do something about it. That would be selfish. This isn't surprising though tbh.

Vash. Vashito. Baby boy. Who are you fooling here. Why are you getting so worked up HUH do you have a CRUSH, MR DAMSEL IN DISTRESS??? (for real though, he's ridiculous for acting like this to wolfwood, who has fucking seen his angel arm shoot a hole in the moon).

There's a lot of ways to interpret this panel? At first I thought ooo maybe Wolfwood is scared/he's amazed that Vash has seen so many Horrors but he still stubbornly continues on, whether out of hope or out of denial (the horrors are endless, but he really does stay silly). Like, that is pretty crazy, but I don't think it's inhuman like Emilio the puppet master said. But on second look, I think it might actually be admiration. Look, there's a crack in Wolfwood's armor too. Goddamn the way these boys change each other i could SCREAM.

We're at one of my favorite parts of the story (and probably one of Vash's least favorite parts 😬😬), where we get to see how much Vash's family means to him

In book 1 of trimax, the Doc tells Brad that Vash's concept of family extends to the entirety of the human race

...So a Man revenge-killing a murderer isn't just 2 humans committing various levels of violence against each other (at differing levels of justifiable), it's 2 families members hurting each other and Vash can't bring himself to not try and stop it. Even if you understand *why* they fight, you probably wouldn't want your cousins to kill each other in front of you, right? And Vash struggles with it, because some of these people he's saving really do deserve the bullet reserved for them; but at the end of the day he still doesn't want to watch them to die.

And over the course of volume 1 and 2 of trimax, the story repeatedly brings up the question (either overtly or through subtext) "What would you do if you your family was in danger? What lengths would you go?"

Which leads us to the first big fight for this question when Vash's actual, closest living thing to a loving family is under attack. His anguish is palpable to everyone alive in the room with him, his wrath is close to deadly, and every new room he finds with more puppets just hurts him further. But even when he's faced with a monster that has destroyed his one vestige of safety in the world, even if that monster has talked about how he wants to do the same to him, he still can't bring himself to kill him! He even goes so far to try and spare him!

Not because of any specific moral reasoning (even though he's given one to Dominique before), but because before he was Leonof the Puppetmaster, he was a little boy named Emilio that loved his father's bread and had a crush on a girl named Isabel. He was someone that Vash knew, someone he recognized, and someone he undoubtedly cared for greatly at one point. And even if he couldn't save him, he at least had to try, because he was family at one point too.

And of course, it's not all pain and suffering for Vash, because when he wakes up in the hospital ready to blame himself for not being able to save everyone, Luida cuts him off: He did the best he could, he saved lives despite the losses, and at the end of the day he's still family to them, too. Even if the rest of humanity views him as a menace, there's still someone out there who reciprocates his love in a way that doesn't hurt him.

And boy, you can see how much of a relief (and source of stress it is for him) on his face lmao

Some time ago, after reading The Sussex Vampire I made a post about Perú and the British industry there, and that made me think about Mrs. Barrymore's brother and his plan to move to South America.

There were many cities with British business in Perú, Chile, Brasil and other countries, mostly related with banks, mining, rubber and manufacture. They didn't have many British employees, and they usually had better jobs than local workers. For locals knowing the English language was an advantage but just a few could study the language. Selden has an opportunity to start a new life with a new name like many other people.

Selden could start a new life with a new name, commiting crimes again. There's a famous case like this in Chile.

Louis-Amédée Brihier Lacroix (aka Émile Dubois, Emilio Dubois, Émile Murraley o Emilio Morales) was was a French-born criminal and serial killer known as a folk hero. He killed at least three person before arriving to Chile, and there he killed five men: all foreigners businessmen. The press refered the victims as "usurers" and that why Dubois was known as a "Robin Hood" criminal. Dubois was captured, tried and finally executed by four riflemen on March 26, 1907 in Valparaíso.

Upcoming series: Ena

In September, the filming of Ena began, a biographical series that will focus on the life of Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, queen of Spain through her marriage to Alfonso XIII between May 31, 1906 and April 14, 1931, after being the monarchy deposed later by the proclamation of the Second Republic. Great-grandmother of the current king Philip VI of Spain, of whom she was godmother at his baptism. Throughout six chapters, the series will tell the life of Victoria Eugenie and at the same time offer a portrait of a time that changed the world, the first half of the 20th century, from 1905 to 1945. Born on October 24, 1887 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Ena was the daughter of Henry of Battenberg and Princess Beatrice, youngest daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her godmother was Eugenia de Montijo, empress consort of France as Napoleón III's wife. The name of the series comes from what her friends and family called her since she was little, Ena.

The fiction is based on the novel of the same name by Pilar Eyre. Javier Olivares, who was behind the acclaimed Isabel and El Ministerio del Tiempo, will be the showrunner and plot manager for Ena. In addition to Olivares, the script is written by Isa Sánchez, Daniel Corpas and Pablo Lara Toledo. The series will be directed entirely by women: Anaïs Pareto, director of the series as a whole, in addition to four episodes, and Estel Díaz, who will direct two episodes.

“Ena is the portrait of historical moments that seem distant but are not so far away, because without them we would not understand the times we live in now,” Olivares declares in the press release sent by TVE. The writer and screenwriter remembers that Victoria Eugenie “fought to be happy in a bitter time, in which she witnessed two world wars, a civil war and a great pandemic, the tortuously called Spanish flu.”

For Pilar Eyre, author of the novel, she was "an extraordinary woman: cultured, supportive, liberal-minded, modern and very loyal." And she is excited because "finally all Spaniards can know" the story of a "misunderstood" woman. in their time, which they will always consider foreign." It is a fiction co-produced by RTVE with Ena La Serie AIE, La Cometa TV and Zona App. José Pastor, director of Film and Fiction at RTVE, has pointed out that "it is a "RTVE is proud to be able to portray this interesting historical character, from the point of view of two women directors and with Javier Olivares as showrunner, in one of its best series."

The Spanish actress of Anglo-Danish descent Kimberly Tell will play Ena and Joan Amargós will play Alfonso XIII. For her part, Elvira Mínguez will play Maria Christina von Habsburg-Lothringen, mother of Alfonso XIII. The cast is completed by Lucía Guerrero (Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha), Raúl Mérida (Alfonso of Orleans and Bourbon), Juan Gea (Álvaro Figueroa y Torres, Count of Romanones), María Morales (María del Carmen Angoloti y Mesa, Duchess of Victoria), Pedro Mari Sánchez (Rodrigo de Saavedra y Vinent, Marquis of Villalobar), Luisa Gavasa (Eugenia de Montijo) and Joaquín Notario (José de Saavedra y Salamanca, Marquis of Viana)

Mariano Peña will play Miguel Primo de Rivera; Jaume Madaula will play the anarchist Mateo Morral, author of the attack committed at the royal wedding; Tomás del Estal will be Emilio María de Torres y González-Arnáu, and Ángel Ruiz will once again give life to Federico García Lorca, a character he already played in El Ministerio del Tiempo, among others.

The series will be filmed entirely in natural exteriors and interiors, like the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso (Segovia), the Palace of Santoña (Madrid), the Palace of Fernán Núñez (Madrid), the Fort of San Francisco (Guadalajara) and the Magdalena Palace (Santander), built in 1911 by the City Council as a tribute to the monarchs and where Ena spent a good part of her summers in Spain, accompanied by the Royal Family. Filming for the series will continue until the end of December.

So, the Magdalena Palace is going to be an important location during the series as a summer palace, the main filming location in Gran Hotel, and in that series Ena appeared in the episode 3×13, played by Aída Filx.

Apart from that, are we getting an Olivaresverse (XD)? Most likely not, and it's just references about his previous works as a showrunner, but there are connections between Isabel, Emdt and Ena: Michelle Jenner starring Isabel as Isabella I of Castile, then appearing in a couple of scenes in Emdt episode 1×04 and being an important figure in the lore as the foundress of the ministry (& Eusebio Poncela playing as Cisneros in both series, and also he played Cisneros in the film La Corona Partida and the Carlos Rey Emperador series); Alfonso XIII is a descendant of Isabella I of Castile; Ángel Ruiz appeard as Lorca in Emdt in 4 episodes and now he is on Ena playing as Lorca again, we don't know yet how much screentime he will get or which will his role be (secondary character most likely), but it's great to see more about him!
