A Girl of Light Character
 Huddersfield, Yorkshire.
1800s.
While raising a Roman Catholic family, parents William and Frances Lombardini most likely wouldn’t have imagined the trouble that their youngest daughter would get into.
William Lombardini, Italian by birth, immigrated to Yorkshire with his brother, John Baptiste. They lived together in Bath Buildings (according to the 1841 UK and Wales Census) with John Baptiste’s wife Mary and their three daughters. In 1843, William married Frances Maria Piercy, daughter of William Henry Piercy and Frances Piercy.
1844 brought about the birth of their first daughter, Maria Louisa Lombardini. In 1845, their second and last daughter, Fanny Piercy Lombardini, was born.
Frances was a respectable lady, working in the Huddersfield Subscription Library for the majority of her career. Her husband, William, slipped in and out of debt as he tried to keep his business as carver and gilder (essentially the occupation of carving wood and applying gold leaf to it) afloat.
By the early 1860s, as the Lombardini girls were entering their teenage years, the family was residing at Upperhead Row. Fanny was working at a millinery (a place where hats are made and sold) run by a Mrs Kaye. She had befriended Eliza Jane Thewlis, the daughter of the plaintiff in the Thewlis vs Mumford- Extraordinary Seduction Case. Under Common Law, it was usually the case that the father would sue instead of the daughter. Upon the learning that 15 year old Eliza had become enciente- pregnant out of wedlock- her father attempted to sue the alleged father, Charles Mumford. In the case, it was explained that there was a very loose morality in Huddersfield at the time, and that the father disliked Fanny Lombardini because she was a “girl of light character”.
I don’t know much about the years that passed after the case until 1866. However, in 1867, Fanny gives birth to a daughter (my g-g-grandmother) out of wedlock to a wool dyer named George Cuttle. Cuttle was 21 at the time his daughter was born in 1867, and, I assume he wasn’t ready to get married, because he boarded a ship to Philadelphia, USA and started a family there.
I don’t know much about the implications having an illegitimate child had on Fanny, however she married the next year to Ephraim Jackson, an engineer. The daughter, Annie Elizabeth, retained her mother’s maiden name and thus was the last remaining Lombardini until her marriage to Harrison Illingworth in 1890. She grew up with Ephraim Jackson as her father figure and had eight new siblings after the marriage.
When Fanny died in 1921, the local paper said that she was a patient sufferer finally at rest. What an interesting turn of phrase.

Malte Elsworth.

The first view shows you the item for sale.
You can see in this montage the royal couple, as well as their emblem of the
  "Winsor's house" since 1917.
In the foreground, Carl Benz and Louis Blériot: one was a German inventory, pioneer of the automobile, and founder of Benz & Cie, the other was a manufacturer of lanterns for cars, planes, motorcycles and of sand yachts, and was a pioneer and pioneer pilot of French aviation.
On the vintage stamp, an effigy of George V.
This stamp was issued by Australia in 1923-24.
It is stuck on the assembly thanks to a protective bag which protects it so as not to damage it.
You will find, for information only, its quotation on view 6, taken from the Yvert and Tellier 2017 catalog; as you can see, although it is a century old, it has no value.
For more information, do not hesitate to call me.

The House
Tumblr media
Nun Monkton, Yorkshire
1800-1900s.
The Gowland family of Nun Monkton had been farmers in the village for many years. Much like them, the house my great granddad had been born in was witness to a myriad of changes-both good and bad- over the years.
Richard Gowland was working as a grocer and provision dealer from home with his wife Mary Elizabeth Holmes (also from a long line of farmers from this area) in the late 1800s. The first tragedy to befall the family came in 1881, when their first born Hilda Mary died as an infant. They didn’t have any more children until 1885 when my great granddad, Stephen Joseph, was born. As my grandmother had never known about Hilda, I assume Richard and Mary never told their children about the death of their eldest. Twins Elizabeth Ann and Richard John Peter was born in 1887, and Richard met an untimely death when he fell down the stairs inside the house and broke his neck in 1891 at the age of six. Their last child, Mary Ann C, was born in 1899.
Sometime in the early 1900s, Stephen Joseph’s good friend drowned in a fast-flowing nearby river (possibly the Ouse) after Stephen’s attempt to save him failed. In addition, the Gowland’s family lands that had been owned by them for centuries were taken by the Roman Catholic Church, leaving them the house and little else. So, Stephen decided to leave England and travel by boat to Australia, where he would start his new life.
Back in England, Elizabeth Ann was sent to an asylum (according to family lore) and was out in time to begin servant duties for two Irish Roman Catholic priests. I have not discovered what happened to Elizabeth after the 1911 Census- I am patiently waiting for 2021 to come around.
In 1916, Richard Gowland Sr died out the front of his house. He fell off of his horse and broke his neck. In 1939, his wife Mary Elizabeth died in the armchair of the living room in the old house. Mary was the fourth Gowland to die at the house.
My Gowland story ends in Australia with my grandmother, Dorothy. She loves reminiscing about her father and the stories he told her.
