Day 2
Before the Heroic Foundations, Izuku, Ochako, and Tenya are joined by Tooru and Momo. Tooru gets her quirk analysed, (might also post this analysis later), and gets super excited by it.
After lunch, 1-A's fifth period starts and then!
That's right, it's the...
Costume Analysis!
...
What, did you think I was really making them perform a scenario-based quirk battle indoors on their second day? Yeah, no.
So, All Might enters, and gives everyone the costume they sent to U.A. after being accepted. Izuku's costume is changed a lot, due to being more inspired by the pre-quirk era, and his weapon of choice.
The sketch is very sketchy, so I'll describe it. It's a green hakama with the sleeves cut off half-way at the upper arms. He also wear red bandages with a black arm brace. The arm brace had a hidden mechanic that release a blade when switched. He has a thick, red rop around his waist, which holds his katana. The trousers are black and baggy. His shoes are red, the same red as his normal trainers, that go up to half of his calf. He also has a black turtleneck underneath his hakama. Everything has carbon fibre woven into it, making it extremely durable.
All Might compliments everyone's costumes, then has them go through a set of exercises to get a feel for the movability of their costumes. He's a bit nervous, but he's doing his best.
After everyone finishes their exercises, All Might encourages them to be honest and speak up if they dislike their costumes. Izuku is volunteered by Ochako to comment on people's costumes, so he kinda, low-key rips into his classmates. They're all chill about it though. Momo is spared as she already said that she'd create a new design with functionality and style.
In the next period, All Might is swapped for Midnight, though not before he asks Izuku to meet him in the teacher's lounge after school. Midnight then helps everyone figure out how they could modify their costumes, and how practical it could be.
Ochako doesn't like her heels, and her belt is too low for her liking.
Momo finds her costume inefficient in actually using her quirk, the heels are annoying, and the breast support is awful.
Kyouka finds her boots to be bulky and heavy.
Tooru doesn't feel comfortable naked and stepping on stones would hurt.
Shouto finds the ice covering his face to be aggrivating and sees nothing else wrong with it.
RIkidou thinks his costume looks too basic and not appealing at all.
Minoru claims his costume was supposed to look like a bowl of grapes but just makes him look like a baby wearing a massive diaper.
Kouji looks like he went shopping in the kids section and it doesn't match his quirk at all.
Midnight makes a note of all those who want a costume change and speaks to them each after school, lasting roughly ten to fifteen minutes.
Shouto's only lasts two as he just decides to get rid of his ice, Rikidou decides to change his skin-tight costume to something a bit more baggy and make his shirt look like a hoodie, Ochako only wants to make her shoes flat and raise the belt a wee bit, and Kyouka spreads her amps more instead of just her boots by placing them in her gloves and shoulders too.
Momo goes through a full redesign, the concept art of which I will post after I find it. Her colour scheme stays the same, but mostly everything else changes. A black sports bra, black hot pants, a red cape over it, red boots with no heels, and a watch that holographically shows her chemical makeups of any object she inputs via voice commands.
Tooru has a suit infused with her DNA, making it so that she can use her quirk in them. She can make parts of these visible, (due to the analysis of her quirk, which I'll be posting tomorrow, along with Eijirou and Mina's), meaning that she has protection from environmental hazards, such as stones that could harm her feet.
Minoru gets rid of the bowl and wears white, baggy trousers with the same design print on the seams. He also has a yellow cape and has a slingshot made of his DNA to throw the balls further.
Kouji, as mentioned before, has a more Earth-y design. Instead of ketchup and mustard, he has a lot more green and brown in his colour scheme. His skin-tight shirt is now a green tunic with a brown strap over it and brown, leather gloves. His skin-tight trousers are now baggy, khaki trousers, and he has brown boots. He also has a mask which, when worn, amplifies his voice.
Students get a costume change:
Uraraka Ochako
Yaoyorozu Momo
Jirou Kyouka
Hagakure Tooru
Todoroki Shouto
Satou Rikidou
Mineta Minoru
Kouda Kouji
Costumes may or may not be redesigned further in the future, so don't worry if you felt as though other characters needed a redesign. Shouto, for instance, will definitely have more changes when the time comes. Additionally, the only reason so many changes were made is because this is their first draft. If and when there are more changes, there will be less of them.
Costume changes will have concept art posted sooner or later, (I get very busy and/or lazy).
A Conversation with All Might
All Might asks Izuku to see him in the teacher's office. When he does, he takes them to a private room. Izuku expects a lot. While All Might is still his favourite hero, he also told him that the quirkless cannot become heroes. Because of this, he believes that All Might is going to tell him to leave U.A. or that he will just remind him not to tell anyone about his true state.
In actuality, that does not happen.
He asks Izuku if he remembers what he told him eleven months ago, on that rooftop. He repeats what he said, that he believed a quirkless person could not become a hero, and that modern-day heroes are too busy chasing after fame that they've forgotten what heroism is about.
And that he'd forgotten it himself.
That same day he told Izuku to be realistic, he watched him run into the fray to save a boy from dying. He watched him pull the boy out of danger and urge the other heroes there to participate. He watched him act as a true hero.
That he has made many mistakes, some he may never be able to rectify. But this? He will fix it and he will fix it now. 'All throughout history, many of the greatest heroes have said the same thing! The reason they save people is simple: their legs move on their own!' The same thing that happened to Izuku.
“You can become a hero!”
Izuku cries, and All Might holds him as he does.
Then he deems Izuku worthy and offers him his quirk, if he so wishes.
Of course, Izuku freaks out. Nothing such as a passable quirk has ever been documented. He mutters and mumbles theory after theory, until All Might cuts him off, stating that while his analysis was interesting, what he says is the truth. His quirk has been passed on for generations, and he is offering it up to Izuku.
And Izuku seriously considers it. This would be an incredible aid in his journey to becoming a hero. He could save so many people with such a powerful quirk! There's no reason to deny it.
Yet, despite how useful it would be, Izuku says no.
Because there are four-year-old children, diagnosed as quirkless, and they will ask their parents the same thing Izuku asked his. 'Can I still be a hero like All Might?' And they will say 'I'm so sorry'.
It's hard to see yourself in Superman when he looks nothing like you. It's hard to see yourself in heroes when they have quirks and you don't.
In Izuku's mind, by rejecting All Might's quirk, he is saving even more people. He is saving the 20% of quirkless people from having their dreams and their lives crushed. There have only been heroes who function quirklessly, never a quirkless hero.
And Izuku wants to be the first one. He wants to be the hero who he never had.
That is why he turns All Might down.
And All Might is... disappointed, but he somewhat expected a denial. Instead of being mad or annoyed, he says that he thinks Izuku is admirable for being able to get this far on his accord and merit.
Needless to say, Izuku cries once more and it's a happy ending!
...
This arc at least.
Conclusion:
Tooru gets her quirk analysed
All Might hosts his first class
Eight students get their costumes changed
All Might offers Izuku OfA, which is rejected

Second Life for Shipping Containers: Selling Bao Buns and Baked Goods To drum up publicity for his downtown Indianapolis food hall, Craig Baker posted photos of orange, turquoise and hot pink shipping containers on Instagram. They might seem like an odd way to promote a food emporium and culinary incubator, but the steel boxes piqued locals’ curiosity. “They’re very much like Legos, right?” Mr. Baker, an entrepreneur and a chef, said of the shipping containers inside the AMP, an artisan marketplace and a former utility garage where vendors will sell PB&J sandwiches, Ethiopian cold-brewed coffee and chocolate-covered strawberries coated in edible glitter. “We’re building our own little village inside a giant garage,” he said of the 40,000-square-foot space, which also contains a full-service restaurant, an open-air bar, a community prep kitchen and a stage. “People want to see what you built.” Shipping containers have been heralded as a trend in residential design, where they are used for modular homes, but they’re also winning over commercial planners who have used them to liven up the bars, cafes and restaurants within developments anchored by food halls. When used in industrial areas or port cities, the containers give the projects a sense of community, critical in a pandemic when retailers and restaurants are shutting their doors. But the shipping containers also present challenges for developers, including adapting them for indoor uses and making them safe for guests and employees during a pandemic. Most food halls rely on shipping containers to populate the vendor stalls, but some also use them as a canvas for art installations or as common spaces. As food halls proliferate, builders are using forward-looking design to stand out from the pack to avoid resembling a sterile cafeteria. “Food halls are a dime a dozen these days; there’s a lot of them doing the exact same thing,” said David Weitz, a co-founder of Carpe Real Estate Partners, which this month opened Oasis, a food and entertainment hub built on the site of a former ship engine repair firm in Miami’s artsy Wynwood neighborhood. Six yellow, pink and lavender shipping containers are used to sell bao buns and gyros while 16 more form a 75-foot-tall central Tower Bar painted in the same colors by the Spanish artist Antonyo Marest. The Oasis is one of a dozen food halls that use shipping containers and one of several opening this year, along with the AMP in Indianapolis and BLVD MRKT near Los Angeles. There are 242 food halls operating in the United States, a jump from 222 at the start of the pandemic, and cities have been relying on their creative concepts and communal dining spaces to re-energize dormant neighborhoods. At least 190 more are in the works, according to a Cushman & Wakefield report. The trend started in 2013 with the Downtown Container Park, a project conceived by Tony Hsieh, the Zappos chief executive, who died last November. The development, which was central to the $350 million revitalization of downtown Las Vegas, inspired other developers like Barney Santos, who will open BLVD MRKT this summer in the predominantly Latino neighborhood of Montebello after seven years of planning. “I remember seeing the container park and feeling so inspired by the design,” Mr. Santos said of the Las Vegas development. “I wanted to recreate that experience in my neighborhood, to do something no one would expect to see.” Developers like Mr. Santos said using shipping containers was a design choice rather than a cost-saving one. Used shipping containers cost $2,000 to $3,000, but builders can expect to pay five times that amount to add windows, doors, support structures, and kitchen and other equipment to pass local health inspections. That makes the cost comparable to installing regular food stalls. Today in Business Updated May 11, 2021, 10:07 a.m. ET For entrepreneurs, opening a food stall in a shipping container allows them to add flourishing touches to personalize their space. At many indoor food halls, stalls often look the same except for a few variations in signage. “The creativity that opens up is the most curious,” said Mr. Baker, the project lead for the AMP. “You’re giving them a canvas, and you say: ‘Look, here’s your space. What are you going to do with it?’” That resonated with Joanna Wilson, owner of an AMP dessert shop, Punkin’s Pies. Ms. Wilson chose colors that matched her brand, adding black-and-white floors and awnings to the hot pink shipping container as well as a sparkly chandelier that shines like her glitter-covered strawberries. The semi-enclosed space also allows her to tuck away most of her kitchen equipment. “I’m trying to make it look dainty and neat,” Ms. Wilson said. “I don’t like showing my refrigerator, microwave and the kitchen area.” The design choice makes sense in major port cities like Long Beach, Calif., where the developer Howard CDM built SteelCraft, one of the earlier incarnations of a shipping container dining venue. “There’s shipping containers everywhere” in Long Beach, said Kimberly Gros, the founder of SteelCraft, which manages two other Southern California locations, in Garden Grove and Bellflower. “So we thought we would create a structure that was different, that really connected to us.” Reusing materials appeals to many consumers, both from an environmental and aesthetic standpoint. “I think when you take an item and subvert its original intent and create an entirely new use for that item, that’s always interesting,” said Erik Rutter, a co-founder of Carpe Real Estate Partners. For indoor food halls like the AMP, bright hues liven up an otherwise gray space while maintaining an industrial feel. “The color palette for the containers really pops,” Mr. Baker said. But there are a few caveats to using shipping containers in food-centric destinations. Some developers advise sticking to outdoor uses to avoid complex retrofitting. In an outdoor setting, oven ventilation can go straight from the oven hood through the roof, which is the most common setup. But for a food hall at the bottom of a 50-story building, the process becomes more complicated because the venting may have to go up 50 stories, said Mr. Weitz of Carpe. Most developers have stuck to outdoor uses, but some food halls in the Midwest, such as the AMP, Detroit Shipping Company and Parlor Food Hall in Kansas City, Mo., have placed them indoors. Design experts say the key is to stick to bakeries and other light cooking uses indoors instead of, say, a shop that requires a deep fryer. That’s why the AMP used shipping containers for businesses with limited cooking requirements and conventional stalls for those that required more, said John Albrecht, a principal at the architecture firm DKGR, which designed the AMP. Coping with the pandemic is also a bigger challenge for indoor food halls where guests often jockey for coveted seats. Most have pushed takeout and delivery services and have reconfigured their seating to enable social distancing, said Phil Colicchio, a co-leader of Cushman & Wakefield’s food and beverage consulting group. But perhaps the biggest struggle for shipping container-led developments is staying relevant as more open. “The worry is that the more that go this route, the more the spaces start to look alike,” said Trip Schneck, also a co-leader of Cushman & Wakefield’s food and beverage group. Expect shipping container developments to keep popping up, especially as cities identify more industrial areas in need of revitalization. But it won’t be long before architects identify the next big thing, said Howard CDM’s president, Martin D. Howard. “Brilliant thinkers and creative minds will come up with other ways to make it interesting for people to come out and eat and drink and have a good time,” he said. 'Elephantasia' is a fashion campaign organised by an environmental fashion group named 'Fashion for Conservation (FFC). FFC was founded by Nazanine Afshar (Art Director, British Vogue), Dr. Samantha Zwicker (Wildlife Conservationist, Hoja Nueva) and Ava Holmes (Fashion Week/Event Producer).
FFC focuses on wildlife conservation through fashion campaigning as well as environmentally friendly and ethical fashion. Elephantasia, their latest campaign, is focused on conservation and preservation of elephants. Elephants are endangered species. Despite the rapidly decreasing population and pretty much worldwide hunting ban, elephants are still being killed by poachers for their ivory. The main ivory markets are in Asia and predominantly China.
Fashion for Conservation reaches out to the fashion audiences. The Eelephantasia show, during London Fashion Week SS18 in September 2017, ended with an educational presentation about elephants and wildlife by Dr. Samantha Zwicker. Ava Holmes introduced the campaign and the FFC mission. The team also introduced donation packages, which individuals can purchase to contribute towards conservation of endangered species.
The show presented a cohesive collection of outfits, each one created by different designer. Elephant inspired silhouettes, motifs, colour palette and styling dominated the runway. The finale piece, created out of upcycled textiles, reflected a sombre y mood. The garment was as majestic as the elephant and the design exhibited elements of grandiose virtuosity. Rene Garza is the designer who created this piece. Rene works for Magpies and Peacocks, a non-profit design house.
VIP guests, models and the production team had a white X symbol painted on their hands. White X symbolises extinction. The show started with shamanic chanting by Colombian shaman Anthar Kharana. Bare feet, he danced on the runway. He also sang live throughout the duration of the show.
Fluorescent orange backpack made an appearance. I found this piece particularly interesting. The backpack was made of Pinatex. Pinatex is created out of reprocessed pineapple husks, made into leather like material. Pineapple husks dry into woodchip like waste material, which is not reused and/or recycled in any way. I saw Pinatex as a concept material with its first prototypes at Royal College of Art students’ exhibition a couple of years ago. It can take an enormous amount of time from research and development and prototyping to actual production of new materials. Hence why it was exciting to see this material being used in production of stylish accessories. Scottish designer C. Nicol created this marvellous piece worn with a jumpsuit by Rachel Allan. C. Nicol’s leather accessories appeal to my taste and I am looking forward to vising her shop in Soho, London.
After the show and the presentations, guests were invited to a cocktail and chocolate tasting reception. The reception focused on further PR of Fashion For Conservation campaign. I attended the reception and chatted to the ‘Elephantasia’ and the FFC team. The chocolate tasting was an interesting and inciteful experience. I got to see cacao beans in real life. These are giant, obolid shapes with a walnut like shell and texture, just much thicker. My designer instinct kicked in immediately and I started dreaming of fashion and textiles ideas inspired by the cacao bean.
I was informed that FFC is organising a fashion show in the rainforest of Peru in 2018. The show will focus on conservation of the rainforests this time. Participating designers will run workshops aimed at the local communities in Peru.
The event and the campaign left an impression. I decided to interview Ava Holmes and talk more about her mission and motivations regarding FFC. I am currently editing the audio from the interview and I will be creating a short video to complement it.

2020 Preview: 11 Things We’re Stupidly Excited About In 2020
Another year over. Finito, done, never to be seen again. But there’s no time to mourn its passing because – quite frankly – we’re just too amped-up with excitement and hoopla for everything that’s coming up in the next 12 months. It’s goodbye 2019 and hello 2020, you absolute, spanking new beauty. And if you’re not up to speed yet with all the buzz, here are 12 things to get seriously excited about in 2020 – and year-defining cultural and social happenings about to change your world.Little Tony SopranoBig franchises might continue to dominate the multiplexes in 2020 – Marvel, DC, Fast & Furious – but the follow-up film to be excited about in 2020 is The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark.Going back to the late 1960s, it will tell the story of Sopranos-verse OG Dickie Moltisanti, much talked about father of Sopranos wild-child Christopher and mentor to Tony Soprano himself. Series creator David Chase is behind this, so there’s no need to worry about it not living up to the standards of what is still (no arguments, please) the greatest TV show of all time. There’s a stellar cast lined up, including Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, and – most excitingly – Tony Soprano actor James Gandolfini’s real-life son, Michael Gandolfini, playing the young Tony. In a word: fuggetaboutit. The Return of BondIt’s been a strange few years for 007. After the huge success (but critical meh) of 2015’s Spectre, it sounded like Daniel Craig’s tenure as James Bond was finished. “I’d rather slit my wrists,” were his words, though he was probably joking, about returning to the role. Then Trainspotting director Danny Boyle dropped out of the problem, the first of several production problems. So many, in fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Bond’s arch nemesis Blofeld had a cat-stroking hand in it.But after five long, Bond-less years, Her Majesty’s finest is back for No Time To Die – now confirmed as Craig’s final outing as 007. The trailer has got us excited already – stunts, suits (yes, we haven’t even seen the film, and already Bond is looking fine), the sexy cars, and deadly woman. Ana De Armas in eveningwear shooting the place up? Take our money. Take it now.Football Coming Home (For Real This Time)Remember when football sort of came home for the World Cup in 2018, but then also sort of didn’t at the last minute? Well, this year it comes home for real when the Euro 2020 stages games in both London and Glasgow, plus 10 other European cities for the tournament’s first ever multi-nation event.Expect the football fever that gripped this country during the World Cup to be booted all the way up to 11 because a) England are actually good again, for the first time in a quarter century and b) games on home turf always make it more special. But also expect football style to be at the forefront of menswear this summer. Retro football shirts will be out in force, a callback to the terrace fashion, while contemporary labels are also game for football these days.Exploring A ‘What If?’ WorldWhile alternate history novels usually explore what might have happened if the baddies had won (such as in Robert Harris’ Fatherland about a Nazi-controlled future), the real world feels a bit like an actual dystopia these days.Science-fiction maestro William Gibson is putting a spin on the concept with Agency – both a sequel and prequel to his time-travel novel The Peripheral – about a future in which Trump didn’t win the 2016 election, Brexit never happened, and – presumably – the world isn’t burning and on the verge of war. It could be the anti-nightmare escapism we need in 2020.Getting Up To Speed With 5GAfter a staggered (and sometimes controversial) soft launch last year, 2020 is the year that 5G will become the new, super-fast standard in data networks. But it’s not just about facilitating our mobile phone addictions at increased speeds; the capacity of 5G will change our devices, technology, how business operate, and how we communicate with each other. In short, in a world ruled by technology and connected by digital communications, 5G is going to have a major impact.Samsung already has a 5G phone available here in the UK and an Apple phone is set to follow sometime in 2020. In the UK, 5G is slower than many other parts of the world but it’s just getting started – already in the US, 5G is capable of speeds almost 100 times faster than 4G smartphones.Manly ArtWe’re now 20 years into the century, during which time the state, consequences, and future of masculinity has been fiercely debated, and the parameters of what it means to be a man redrawn. It’s quite right that in 2020, a number of exhibitions are set to offer interesting perspectives on this undefinable thing we call masculinity.Between February and May, the Barbican will host Masculinities, a collection of film and photography exploring how masculinity has been coded, performed, and socially constructed from the 1960s to now. Exhibitions at the Tate on David Hockney and Andy Warhol show will social and cultural perspectives from two of art’s great male personalities. But most exciting is an exhibition at the Tate (Feb-May) celebrating 25 years of the Turner Prize and Oscar-winning artist Steve McQueen’s work, one of the most crucial, diverse, and relevant masculine voices in 21st Century British culture. An Upgrade For GamersAfter years of being promised that VR is the future of gaming, that looks set to actually happen with the arrival Half-Life: Alyx, the much-anticipated VR game(-changer). Couple that with the Oculus Quest, and we’ll be glad to spend 2020 escaping the real world for virtual alternatives.Regular gaming is also due an upgrade with next generation consoles due towards the end of the year. The Xbox Series X is rumoured to be four times more powerful that its predecessor, and will see the return of Master Chief with the all-new Halo. If you think 4K looks sharp, its 8K resolution will poke your eyes right out.Never one to be outdone by a rival machine, Sony will also launch the PS5, rumoured to include next-gen VR and visual techniques used in Hollywood blockbuster SFX. Rainbow Six Quarantine, Godfall, and a mysterious new title from the designers behind Shadow of the Colossus are all confirmed.50 Years of GlastonburyThe greatest music festival in the history of mankind will be throwing a whopper party for its 50th anniversary this year. Sorry, Burning Man, you’re good, but your sunbaked pretentiousness can never top some music-in-a-field debauchery.Paul McCartney and Taylor Swift have been confirmed to headline Glasto, with Kenrick Lamar tipped to headline the Friday night. If you haven’t got a ticket, don’t worry – tickets go on resale in April, but even if you’re not there, Glastonbury is more than a party in Somerset – it’s a cultural happening that will rock the entire country. Even from the comfort of your living room, expect to discover new bands, experience amazing sets, and make promises to yourself that you’ll never miss getting a ticket ever again.Eco-TravellingInspired perhaps by the shame of getting a thundering, disapproving look from Greta Thunberg, there’s been a surge in people seeking out environmentally friendly travel options – and 2020 could be the year we all think about saving the planet as well as travelling it.Both Rolls Royce and Airbus will put electric aeroplanes to the test this year, while zero-waste travel accessories and eco travel apps such as Green Globe and Olio are becoming hot (but not too hot, they’re keeping the emissions low) trends. Train travel has also seen a rise in popularity. And it’s not just the means of getting there, but destinations themselves, with eco-friendly resorts across the world. Usually for a less-than-modest price, of course, but less extortionate options are out there – nature-based travel, or hiking, climbing, and rambling hols. And if you can hang on until 2022, the world’s first energy positive hotel – Svart in Norway – is due to open.Streaming Wars = Massive BingeIf you’re old enough to remember the lukewarm battle between VHS and DVD, you’ll know what this is all about. It’s happening all over again, but this time nuclear, as top streaming platforms will lock and load to compete for your eyeballs’ attention.Apple TV has already launched and WarnerMedia’s HBO Max is set to launch in May. But the real fight will be between Netflix and Disney+. Netflix will aim to continue its dominance with After Life Season 2, The Haunting of Hill House follow-up series Bly Manor, and – probably – Stranger Things 4. Not to mention it’s never-ending supply of soul-troubling true crime docs.On the other channel, Disney – whose stronghold on all other areas of entertainment is reaching Galactic Empire levels – will fire back with Star Wars series The Mandalorian, Marvel series The Falcon & The Winter Solider, and 90 years’ worth of back catalogue blockbuster hits. While 2020 is the year these entertainment titans battle it out, for the rest of us it’ll be a year of pure relaxation and binging.Getting Your Body BiohackedYou may have heard of the biohacking – a tech-based, systems-thinking approach to reaching optimum fitness and health. The term is associated with the kind of eccentric, Silicon Valley bros and entrepreneurial lifestyle gurus who claim they’ll live to the grand old age of 160, like some sort of super-healthy Bond villain. But biohacking isn’t all that bonkers. In fact, it’s going mainstream, with leading biohacker Dave Asprey’s dedicated body-hacking gym in Los Angeles and the opening of BelleCell, London’s first biohacking clinic, which offers sports performance optimisation (using 3D body scanners), “body potential treatments”, genetic testing, and tech-based beauty treatments. Honours Project - Reflective Journal
Project Overview
The project I created this year was intended to be my magnum opus of my university work. Each of my years in university I have created a 3D platformer, due to this I wanted to create a work to a higher standard than previous years as I have learnt blueprint since these two projects. With this I could create my own mechanics for my platformer. This idea started to form during the summer period before the third year of university began. As the idea formed I settled on creating a 3D platformer where the player’s abilities were absorbed. With the project my goal was to increase my skills and knowledge in both fields of Game Design and Level Design. Level Design is the route I want to progress into in the industry and I feel that Game Design would help me further this by being able to create my own concepts.
At the beginning of the project before it was fully defined in the project plan, I tested out the mechanics to check if the project was a viable concept. Through this testing, I tested out two different methods of play, passive absorption in which they activate when the player overlaps them and active absorption where the player needs to absorb manually to have more control. After initial planning and testing the active absorption was chosen to move forward with into my first milestone. By testing out the idea for the concept first I could solidify what I wanted from it as I went into creating my project plan and schedule.
Milestone 1 – Mechanics
At the start of the project once my concept test had been completed, I started to gather research on various games and movies that used a system like this. My main piece of reference was Rayman 3 Hoodlum Havoc (Ubisoft, 2003) . Within this game, the player would interact with cans that contain the power for Rayman to use. However, these were limited to certain areas and so I wanted to evolve this idea of the abilities being accessible to the player when they wish.
Within this milestone there was a lot of trial and error on the mechanics. The mechanics were created in their base form without polish during this milestone as to create the foundation for the rest of the game to be built upon.
The focus at the start of this milestone was on the player’s movement. Player movement is essential in a 3D platformer as this is the main interface to the rest of the game. I followed a quote by Chris Sutherland of Playtonic Games (Playtonic Games, 2015) “We started with a cube, made it move and made him jump and move around and it felt good so we thought when we add in the graphics it’s only going to amp it up.” From this I turned the character into a cube to solidify movement to be fun rather than focusing on how the anatomy of the character moves. The jump was modified so that gravity would affect the player more. With the gravity being stronger the jump time was shorter but allowed for more precise movement.
youtube
To add an extra element to the movement, I implemented a ledge grab into the game so that the player can reach heights inaccessible without abilities and they will be able to then recover from any miscalculated jumps. During this milestone, the ledge grab wasn’t polished and various issues with it were encountered, such as the grab not being detected and the player getting stuck to the ledge. However, with the basics of this set-in place I decided to move onto the other mechanics so that I could polish this in the latter period of the project.
After the movement was solidified I focused on the creation of the absorption abilities. From testing I realised that to highlight the abilities best would be to modify the player’s movements for the basic two abilities. From this Jump enhancement and Speed enhancement were created. To not overload the player with information only one more ability was created. This ability was created to be designed to fit into a theme of a level. I decided to go with Ice as the concept for the ability as this could provide unique gameplay. The base ice ability would allow the player to create a path underneath them as they walk on water.
youtube
The next thing I did was take the concept of combination of the powers and create how they would work together. This is where the long jump, ice slide and ice pillar were created. At this point I was starting to learn more about scripting with blueprint as all my mechanics must connect to each other in some form. I feel that starting off with the mechanics first was the right choice as it helped on influencing the rest of the game. With my focus being on how fun they are to use they weren’t in a polished state but helped me in building the foundations for creating the level around them.
Milestone 2 – Level Design
At the start of the milestone I decided to research the best approach to designing platformers. There were two different types of platformer to focus on, the collectible type where the player would need to collect various objects within the level, or the progression type in which there are various levels and the player will utilise the mechanics to progress through them. I decided to go with the progression type as to keep a difficulty curve within the game rather than the player choosing where to go which decides the difficulty.
It was in this period I watched a video by Mark Brown (Mark Brown Youtube, 2015) who had described the methodology used in Super Mario 3D World (Nintendo, 2013) called Kishōtenketsu. This teaches the player how to use the mechanics in the game within four stages. I decided to take this design further so that the abilities are taught to the player throughout the level rather than it being used to teach the player once in the level.
From here I designed the top down map for the level. My idea was for the map to be shaped like a ribbon at first so that the level will loop around and meet back up at the start. This is to show the player the end of the level at the start. After the level was designed I spent the next few weeks of the milestone focusing on creating the block map.
Once the block map was full designed I spent my time iterating upon the environmental puzzles within the game as well as the precision of jumps to accommodate the way I designed them to be with some being a lot harder than others. These weeks went through a lot of iteration as I had myself playtesting constantly on how jumps worked and had other people playtesting to observe how they interact with the space in its basic form. When the level was completed I worked on creating the level actors within the level such as the knockback wind, the destructible walls, and the falling debris. It was at this point that I felt the level was too easy and restricted to the player in ways that it could be completed.
Due to this I spent the next few weeks reiterating on these areas to provide choice to the player. This way it fulfils my original idea of using the abilities to choose how the player can complete the level in their own way. I feel that through the iterative process of this milestone I developed my workflow further for level design and as my knowledge for blueprint had kept growing I was able to refine my mechanics more. Due to me spending my time researching various methodology and planning the level in detail of how it would work, I feel this helped me work to a faster speed than if I hadn’t planned the level. Sometimes I stuck to close to the plan where concepts needed changing, however thanks to feedback I took on board these changes were made promptly.
Milestone 3 – Art & Improvements
This milestone was my weakest throughout the project, this is down to me not being proficient in 3d modelling and so I attempted a stylised look for the game. Whilst this was done to help me in the creation of the assets, I feel this overall I didn’t achieve what I wanted to in this milestone and started to fall behind.
At the start of the milestone I focused on creating the perimeter walls for the level. These ended up being ice pillars to fit the theme of the level. Originally the pieces were made low poly with hard edges to define the ice, it also had a slightly reflective material as to help stylise the ice and help the player understand what it was. After feedback gained it was noticed that the hard edges didn’t work with the player character and theme of the level as it was too harsh on the player’s eyes. It was recommended to me that I should bevel the edges to give them a softer look. I felt a lot happier with this and the style felt more suited to a 3d platformer overall.
As the art progressed in the creation, the materials were changed to be less reflective, this was due to it being disorienting to the player and so it was made subtler. It took me into the fourth milestone at the beginning of April to finish all assets as my drive for creating the assets wavered and I was more interested in focusing on the Game Design and Level Design aspects of creation.
The art for the project however wasn’t just the creation of 3D assets. I focused on visual feedback for the player when playing the game using the player characters’ material and the HUD. With the HUD, there are face buttons in the bottom left of the screen which display the abilities that the player has at that moment. When an ability activates the icon changes to a coloured low poly version of this icon. To help with feedback for the player the face buttons were designed so that when a player overlaps an ability they will start to glow to indicate that this can be absorbed. As this wasn’t enough feedback for the player, the player material also changes under the same conditions so that it glows. I was proud of this system for two reasons. It meant that it was easy for the player to understand when they can absorb and can’t, but also this was used to first teach the player how to absorb as there are no prompts to absorb. It draws the players interest into why they are both glowing and they are then taught through practice.
youtube
In the HUD, there are also the collectible Morph Shards in the game. Originally this was just a counter that increased as more were collected. However, to indicate to the player how many they have collected and what are the maximum in each level I created an Icon for these shards and placed five of them in the top left of the screen. Until the player collects one they are displayed as silhouettes and when collected are displayed as coloured low poly art. I feel that this system worked better within the game and visually was more appealing to the player.
Overall with this milestone I feel that there are many improvements I could’ve changed in my workflow. The speed at which I created assets set me back on the project substantially at points and thus certain ideas needed to be changed such as the design of some areas so that I could use the time on refining the game.
Milestone 4: Refinements
In the final milestone, my objective was to focus on refining certain elements of the game. It was in this milestone that I regrettably did not achieve a what I wanted to create. I had originally planned to create animations for the character to replace the placeholder animations that are currently in the game. As these animations were made with timelines, when the game is built they sometimes don’t work as intended. Due to time restraints at this point in the project I focused on the mechanics and level that we’re already in place rather than learning how to animate. With the animations, I feel it would’ve been more efficient to outsource an animator from the start of the project as it wasn’t essential to me learning it.
As my focus was on the refinement of the game at this point evaluated the point at which my game was at and could see it coming together but I wasn’t at a state where I was proud of it yet. My refinements focus for this milestone was:
· Finalise the mechanics
· Fix the lighting
· Solidify the art
· Have the level completable
With these as my main four tasks to complete it was easier for me to schedule priorities for the game. I focused on finalising the mechanics first with my main mechanic to fix being the Ice Path. The path create under the player was a large floor at that point so I made a small hexagon with an ice texture to replace it. This fixed all my issues as when the meshes overlapped no seams were created and they were small enough to keep the risk/reward high for using it to traverse the level. At this point I tried to fix the issues with the ledge grab as well, however I was unable to fix this issue and feel that it has created a weak point in the project.
youtube
After this I solidified the art to make sure that it was consistent with the rest of the game and that it all fit contextually. With the art, I am overall pleased with the outcome however I know it could be much higher quality and that if I focused more on it during the third milestone, the appearance of the game would be better. Once the art was locked down I worked on fixing the lighting issues in the game as they created some artefacts on objects within the level as well as making noticeable seams which were distracting to the player.
Making the level completable was my final challenge for the project. I had to ensure the quality of the game and that it wouldn’t break for the player when playing. I introduced an ending into the game which fades out the screen and then returns the player to the title screen.
Conclusion
In terms of the project overall I am proud of what has been created and have successfully completed what I set out to accomplish. However, although I am proud of what has been created, I feel there is a lot of room for improvement.
If I were to continue with the project I would redo all the art so that it was more aesthetically pleasing and would create props to populate the environment with as a lot of the areas feel barren now. If I had focused on continuing with modelling during the summer before third year, I feel that the project would be up to a higher standard.
I would also like to spend more weeks planning the project. Whilst I feel that the method of creating the mechanics first helped me in creating the level, it also restricted me in some respects. It would’ve been better to design the mechanics and level together in tandem so that they complimented each other equally.

Meet the Free-Loving Folks Behind Hippiedom In This Out-of-Sight Exhibit
Channeling plenty of peace, love, and artistic style, a comprehensive exhibit in the Bay Area focuses on the hippie movement of the 60s and 70s. An era defined by a free-spirited way of unconventional thinking, the time genially welcomed the wildest imaginings from artists. Experimentation with drugs and new-found interest in social justice contributed to the era's status as a tentpole in modern American history.
The exhibit, which previously showed at Minneapolis's Walker Art Center, fills the halls of UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archives (BAMPFA), with furniture, books, artifacts, and classic "Hippie Era" films. With a mixed-media approach that encourages a fully-immersive experience of the time, the show combines art, architecture, and design. The show's themes portend to current times, alluding to the relevance of "struggling for Utopia." The search for a world of balance and harmony can feel impossible in an increasingly more dystopia-like state , and a look back on the time of free love can clarify present-day experiences.

Creators spoke to co-curator of the exhibit, Greg Castillo, an associate professor in the Department of Architecture at the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley, about the raucous of the hippie era:

Creators: What were some of the main concepts you hoped to communicate through the Hippie Modernism exhibit?
Greg Castillo: The exhibition conveys the breadth of creative invention unleashed by the counterculture. That's not to deny the old adage about "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" being at the heart of hippie culture. But they're complicated — and that's where the excitement is. Take sex, for example. The delirious "acid drag" art of San Francisco's Cockettes and Angels of Light troupes liberated gender as a social performance decades before that concept was theorized by philosopher Judith Butler. The exhibit includes acid blotter papers and a liquid light show as high-tech hippie folk art, but also examines the role of LSD as what the Whole Earth Catalog called a macroscope — a zoomed out counterpart to the microscope — as a tool of holistic vision and catalyst of environmental consciousness. As for rock-and-roll, a wall of neon rock posters features vibrating color fields and amped up visuals inspired by the sensory overload of pharmaceutically enhanced concert experiences: the hippie [movement's] contribution to advertising as a commercial artform.

Chicago Women's Graphics Collective, In Celebration of Amazons poster
What kind of distinctive lessons or parallels do you see the show striking with current events?
With the current administration's plan to dismantle the EPA, there's a "déjå vu all over again" quality to seeing an eco-mandala promoting California's Office of Appropriate Technology: the world's first state agency working toward environmentally sustainable practices and the first state agency to be dismantled under an incoming Republican governor in 1983. An exhibition gallery dedicated to the art of protest showcasing posters from Black Panther Oakland, the Native American occupation of Alcatraz Island, student anti-war broadsides, and Women's liberation are precursors of Black Lives Matter, Native American land battles around the Dakota Access pipeline, and the Women's March on Washington. They remind us that the injection of embodied politics into what had become the deadened spaces of mechanized traffic remains a crucial legacy of the 'Sixties, one that needs revival more than ever.
What were some of the most enjoyable or interesting aspects of the curation process?
Without a doubt it was meeting counterculture veterans on their own turf to scout materials for the exhibition. Being ushered into a darkened San Francisco Victorian with a floor-to-ceiling display of framed LSD blotter papers patterned with eclectic abandon. Asking about a one-of-a-kind "technicolor dreamcoat" seen in a period photo and having the artist pull it out of a cabinet where it had lived in a plastic bag for nearly half a century. Or handling stunningly beautiful artwork by the now-famous artist Martin Wong in the home of one of his fellow Angel of Light drag communards.
The "Free the Love" app is an inspiring addition to the exhibit. What encouraged you and your co-curators to add that element to the exhibit?
The "Free the Love" concept was the brainchild of Rich Silverstein of GS&P, a madly creative designer who insisted that, for our embattled times, the hippie "free love" revolution was a notion worth retrieving. For the app's "love tour" of counterculture sites, I assembled its map with help from Adam Hirschfelder of the California Historical Society. The "Free the Love" app, the Hippie Modernism exhibition, and the host of other events around the Bay Area marking the 50th anniversary of Haight-Ashbury's Summer of Love share one overarching goal: to celebrate alternative cultures as a source of Bay Area exceptionalism that will continue to empower its progressive future.

How Heron Preston Went From Making Invitations for Kanye West to His Own Fashion Label
At any given second, Heron Preston is focusing on a number of home-started tasks that move between, and frequently straddle, the sides of artwork and style, equally electronic and IRL. Among his present preoccupations really are a unisex-apparel selection released at Men’s Fashion-Week, in London, earlier this Jan (more on that later) along with a zine full of pictures that his dad, a retired Bay Area officer, required at work.
Preston lately made up countless these images, which depict scenes and convicts. One especially visual picture exhibits a guy having a gunshot injury. A camera was usually maintained by “He ” claims Preston of his dad. “But he ultimately ceased, since he was fed up with getting unfortunate photos.”
About 2 yrs before, Preston had an identical come-to- moment, although under conditions that are much more attractive. Whenever a plastic tote covered facing him he was skating within the Med. In those days, Preston was switching out extremely effective “bootleg” t shirts, which he lined in corporate images that were variety, like these of Coca Cola and Nascar. He turned the Nascar emblem inverted, concocting a tale the tops were manufacturer rejects present in a Tn thriftstore and, cautious of possible lawsuits, sold them. He was also DJing at events and operating being an art representative for Kanyewest, creating visit product and making the machine-covered clothes that offered whilst the invitations to West’s Yeezy style shows—a tough work that Preston remained up through the night, filling 800 coats right into a FoodSaver from Goal to be able to get that completely scrunched-up search that Ye preferred. Subsequently arrived the boating event, where Preston experienced directly the reality that was unfortunate that lots is of rubbish on the planet. Quickly afterwards, he unearthed that the apparel business may be the minute- of the earth.
Didn’t that is “I wish to subscribe to that he claims. I needed to complete better, although “I love creating. We ought to all be performing better.”
a design sporting along with Preston appears from his drop 2017 selection. Manolo Blahnik shoes; jewelry is owned by Preston’s.

Whilst the boy of the policeman, 34, Preston, was raised having a heavy appreciation for outfits. He’d long wished for participating with America Postal Service with NASA. (Once The German combined Vetements arrived on the scene having a DHL top, he instantly shelved that strategy.)
“Then I recognized that Sanitation’s Nyc Division includes a uniformed pressure that cares ” he claims. Because it works out, the DSNY was the very first public business with an artisan in home, from 1978: Mierle Laderman Ukeles, a performance artist enthusiastic about preservation, is well-known for the item Contact Sterilization Efficiency, which required trembling the palm of each and every among the DSNY’s 8,500 employees and informing them, “Thank you for maintaining Nyc alive.”
Preston followed Vito Turso, a self appointed commissioner of stuff” that was explaining and also the guy who introduced Ukeles up to speed those years back. He delivered him an email using the topic point “Big Concept,” and pitched an accumulation of altered DSNY outfits. A effort to get rid of waste delivered to nearby landfills from the year 2030 when the division recognized it might earn money off the task to aid 0x30, the officials were offered. “It was really Vito who recommended the selection is presented by us at Fashion-Week,” claims Preston. “Apparently, he usually believed it’d be considered an enjoyable idea.”

And thus earlier this Sept, Preston and also the DSNY put up store in the Spring Street Salt Drop, an architecturally impressive tangible building that houses the sodium employed for de icing roads within the winter, and offered Standard, an accumulation of trousers, hoodies, coats, and tops that were decommissioned from the DSNY or acquired from Goodwill and published with Preston’s title and also the DSNY emblem. The function was a feel good event, with versions and hipsters interacting with public workers and appearing together beside Ukeles’s advanced-searching reflected garbage-truck, The Interpersonal Reflection, which initially debuted in 1983 in the Nyc Art March.
Selection that is “The sold-out,” claims Preston. “And with a few of the cash elevated, we produced the Building Blocks For Brand New York’s Strongest”—a jerk towards the department’s nickname—“which may proceed to teach people on ecological problems, drive the 0x30 effort, and finally assist the DSNY start a museum.”
Certainly, the task received him lots of interest.
