While in the middle of a campaign in Delfeur with his older brother, the Crown Prince of Vere, Laurent goes into his first (late) heat at age 17 (totally triggered by the presence of Damen, the stupidly handsome Crown Prince of Akeilos). There are very few things more dangerous than having an Omega in heat while camping in enemy territory, and it's too late now for suppressants. Leaving Laurent to ride out the heat on his own would mean leaving it last for three days or more. Auguste has no option but to help Laurent through it by himself, so it will last no longer than a couple hours.

Yeah the Captive Prince trilogy has a million and one different tragedies in it, ranging from death of loved ones to explosive racial prejudices, but to me the biggest tragedy is that not everyone has read The Training of Erasmus because it wasn’t included in all printings of the first book.

Like so many readers only met Erasmus once he was already in Vere and subsequently considered him being sold to Torveld and going to Patras a happy ending for him. Like… the layers of symbolism and allegory to the idea that you can’t save everyone. It’s even more impactful considering Damens character arc has so much to do with learning about flaws in political systems and leadership and how it affects individuals like Erasmus.

Talk about a tragic story. Erasmus has this already doomed situation that screws with his view of himself and his life, yet has this tiny act of rebellion in his relationship with Kallias. And Kallias, who we only see from Erasmus’ POV, but who seems to at least somewhat understand how wrong their situation is and how much more they could’ve had in a different life. But then he shatters his relationship with Erasmus and any chance of ever seeing him again in order to protect Erasmus and give him a better life, knowing that Erasmus will probably never understand why he did it. Parallels to Damen and Laurent anyone?? Princes Gambit —> slaves gambit.

I could talk so much more about the those parallels between Damen/Laurent and Erasmus/Kallias, as well as Damens enslavement never being comparable to others because he never thought of himself as a slave if anyone is interested.

God there’s just so much tragedy and food for thought in the series, Pacat did such an incredible job on these books they will forever be some of my favorites.

I think Erasmus’ story hits a little harder because he never really gets that full circle arc like a main character would. We don’t really get to see him learning about himself as a person instead of an extension of someone else. Even if there’s that one scene where we see Torveld encourage him to care about his own well being/ not accept abuse done to him by people with more power than him. Being that Torveld is a prince and will always think of Erasmus as below him no matter how much he may or may not love/respect him, it definitely makes you appreciate Damens growth and understanding of his own position of power more.

I really wish Pacat could make an additional short story about Erasmus, maybe leaving Patras and seeing Kallias again at some point. I guess on some level that would take away from the impact of his story but I just really love his character and want to see more of him.

Oh shit guys, I just fucking realized, Pedro Pascal as prince Torveld.

I'm very curious whenever I hear from other people in the fandom that they don't like him. Obviously everyone can think what they want and no one has to be obligated to like any particular character, but I've always considered him to be the image of what Damen would have been like if he'd never been taken to Vere. He's kind to Erasmus, and he's fumblingly flirtatious but never outright disrespectful to Laurent, but he never gets the memo that slavery (no matter how kind you are to your slaves) is in fact...not a good thing, even if you aren't an inherently cruel person. Damen needed to have his world turned upside down to make that distinction, and I wish we'd gotten another short story about the political climate in Patras after the unification to see what it's like there.

He loved it because his Master gave it to him. He loved all things his Master gave to him, and he loved them equally. However, the sweater, made of soft golden yarn to match his hair… Erasmus liked it best. It was soft while the jewels were hard. Still, when presented the ornament, Erasmus knelt in gratitude, just as he had when given the sweater he was currently wearing (indeed, it was all he was wearing). “Thank you,” Erasmus whispered, turning the bauble with careful hands. The raised pattern glistened violet in the firelight. “Where did it come from?” “The kingdom to the North,” Torveld answered. He smiled at Erasmus. “We went there together last year, remember?” “Ah,” Erasmus flushed. It had been a foolish question, only his Master went so many places, with and without him... “I am-“ “No need to apologize,” Torveld was truly merciful, quashing Erasmus’s embarrassment before it could fully form. “Do you like it?” “This slave loves anything my Master gives me,” Erasmus said. Torveld smiled, the expression a bit wry, and reached out to gently tug at the treasured garment Erasmus wore. “Perhaps another sweater would have been the better choice.” Erasmus shook his head. “This one is special. I do not think I could ever like any new one better, no matter where it is from or what it cost.” “And what is special about it?” Erasmus lowered his gaze. It was easier to answer such questions without his Master’s warm eyes looking into his own. “This sweater is the first piece of clothing given from my Master’s hand.” Torveld’s smile shone almost as bright as his eyes did whenever he looked at Erasmus. “That is special indeed. But you know all of these gifts… none compare to what your presence is to me.” Erasmus rose from his knees and let Torveld take his hands to pull him close. “Then let us both give thanks, Master.” The gratitude started with a deep kiss.

To his relief, Torveld didn’t push.

“Quite a kingly conviction.”

Prince's Gambit Erasmus

I wanted to give him some jewelry, inspired by "gift to favored servant from master" Roman archeology finds. Because I think Torveld would gift him things. Unfortunately, it was an major afterthought.

The outfit was inspired of art works from Moroccoan servants. I'm trying to figure out Patras. Right now, my major influences are North Arab African, medieval Spain, and Perisan.

I also wanted to remove his cuffs, but when I was reading the sections, I didn't see anything mention about them being on or off.

TORVELD IS A LOSER WHO HAS SURVIVED FROM AN OLDER, WORSE VERSION OF THE STORY!

Let us consider: What does this man offer? Gullibility? A willingness to believe that Laurent has more to offer? Confirmation that Laurent is sexy? The understanding that that akielon slaves are being treated badly?

We get those in turn from other, better moments, namely:

Damen being like gee the regent seems like a good guy

Erasmus being like “Laurent is wonderful”

Damen getting the horn even when under threat of mortal fucking peril

Again Erasmus has already told us this

He gives us NOTHING. And people like him!

Oh he’s essential to the plot, boo hoo hoo! NO! I repudiate this. He is simply a vessel to whisk the slaves out of the story, NOT a romantic lead 😡

It’s like…..guys he is separated by a mere 200 pages from KALLIAS, a romantic hero whose devotion and sacrifice reverberate through the story even when he is never mentioned again, someone TRAPPED by his circumstances that gives up EVERYTHING to save the one thing he loves!

As I have said before: Kallias is like Pacat sat up one day and said, oh, what if I made a version of Jokaste’s arc that make sense?

Torveld in comparison is like the baby plot in KR. Extraneous!!!

In short: KALLIAS 2K23!!!!!

I've been watching a lot of the classic sitcom I Dream of Jeannie and I cannot stop thinking of a modern AU where Torveld washes up on a deserted island and finds a bottle (or lamp). And after releasing Erasmus falls hopelessly in love with the cute djinn!

It’s a 30k word Erasmus-centric fic set post-canon, focusing on his path out of slavehood and boyhood, his worsening relationship with Torveld and the kindlings left by Kallias.
