You were sent home. Because all you wanted to do was collapse on your bed and sleep the night away. The rain makes it extra cozy for you to cuddle under the blankets. Once your head hit the pillow, you were out like a light.

You woke up to your phone buzzing. But it isn't Yves this time. It's Evangeline.

You picked it up and brought it to your ear, giving her a groggy 'hello'?

"Wake up, damn it! You're going to miss class again, daddy's already waiting outside for you!" You let out a yelp as you heard loud honking from outside.

You whined as you got out of bed, throwing a mini tantrum by stomping out of your room. You wish that Yves was here, he would have woken you up on the right side of bed every day. Yves would have been gentle and stress-free, he would have stroked your hair and given you soft kisses as an alarm. There wouldn't be any loud noises or sudden surprises.

You grumbled as you got yourself ready for the day.

This time, you remembered to bring the premade meals Yves prepared in the fridge. Sharing yesterday's lunch with Evangeline while you ate the fresher one today. Mr. Jones fussed with you about wearing sunscreen, so now you're protected from the sun.

Yves only sent you a singular text this morning at 8:30am.

"Good morning, my dear. May you have a lovely day, (name)."

No reminders, no updates about what he did or saw, no requests to contact him. You brushed it off as him being busy, deciding to favour Evangeline's attention over his. You didn't even reply to his only message, thinking that Yves would mind too much about it.

"Mmm! This is delicious, Sir Yves is a really great cook!" Complimented Evangeline as she took another bite of the cold wrap. You're eating your own meal that has specific instructions to microwave it, luckily there are some that you could use in the student's lounge.

"Aww, he's such a sweet partner too. Look!" She showed you a message left by Yves, that was attached to the wrapper of yesterday's meal.

"Lunch for (full name)- Monday.

Meal: Turkey and Apricot Wrap. Do not heat. Eat as it is.

Ingredients: lactose-free cream cheese, apricot reserves, wheat tortillas, shredded turkey, spices, arugula. Contains gluten.

Remember to put on sunscreen. There is no need to be nervous as I know you will do well on your first day. I will be thinking of you always. Call me if you want to talk about your day, I will listen.

You never realized that there was a whole paragraph plastered on its wrapping. So you decided to check your container for any similar texts. Sure enough, you found one.

"Lunch for (name)- Tuesday

Meal: Coq au vin. Microwave with lid partially open, 3-4 minutes. Be careful as the contents will be hot.

Ingredients: Chicken, pearl onions, garlic, spices, pinot noir red wine, button mushrooms, bacon, butter, tomato paste, flour, homemade beef stock, tagliatelle. Contains gluten and lactose.

Well done, my dear (name). You have reached your second day. I hope you find my cooking so far to be appetizing, your thoughts would be very much appreciated. As always, do not hesitate to contact me if you need me. I will always be there for you. Be careful not to burn your tongue.

She gushed over today's note. "That's so cute! I can see why you're into older men now."

You lightly punched her on the shoulder and laughed along.

You and her were eating peacefully, now that you have exhausted all the conversation topics. Both of you ate in silence, enjoying the food from Yves.

But then, all of the sudden, a pair of hands clamped down onto your shoulders. Causing you to shriek and jump in your seat.

"Scared ya, didn't I?" You felt his stubble scraped against your skin that has been softened by the skincare routine Yves set for you.

Colour drain from Evangeline's and your faces.

You tried swatting him away, but he took a deep sniff of your hair, inhaling all your scent. You protested as he buries his nose into your head, Montgomery is really loud in his sniffing. "You smell so good..." He mumbled lazily as he held you from behind.

Evangeline stood up and pried him away from you, but only successfully to a certain extent.

"Fine, fine. I'll save the lovey-dovey stuff for later when you're easier to win over." He massaged your shoulders with his thumb. You frown because he doesn't seem to understand that his strength is too much, you think you will bruise.

"You are hurting (name)." Evangeline firmly told him off. To your shock though, he immediately lets go and stroke your hair in an unnaturally, tender way.

"Oh! I'm so sorry darlin'... You're so soft and sweet, I sure forgot I can be a damn brute sometimes." You looked up at him and there was a considerable amount of guilt being expressed on his face.

He ignored Evangeline and invited himself to your table, sitting on the chair adjacent to yours.

"Here, I got us lunch."

Montgomery sets down a paper bag that has an imposing fast food logo printed on it. The smell of piping hot french fries and meat patties wafted throughout the air. He began unpacking it, placing a thin, cardboard box containing a large burger in front of you. Even though you're clearly eating the well crafted meal Yves made.

"And I didn't forget about yer rich friend." He took out a much smaller sandwich, wrapped in wax paper. Albeit begrudgingly.

"It ain't like she's gonna appreciate it anyways..." He muttered under his breath.

"Thank you very much, Sir Montgomery." Although she was kind and friendly in her response, you sensed a bit of animosity radiating from her. Montgomery seems to pick it up faster than you and tenfold the intensity.

He shot her a dirty look before going back to showcasing what he bought.

"I got ya' your favourite soda in a jumbo cup." He carefully pulled out a huge plastic vessel containing an ice-cooled liquid, you can hear it noisily sloshing and fizzing. It looks intimidating to say the least; you definitely can't finish it even with the help of Evangeline.

"You gotta fuel your brain somehow through those soul killin' classes." He stuck his hand back into the bag.

"I got ya' a cookie, a cupcake, some fries aaand..." He rummaged through the bag and pulled out something so small, that it's entirely engulfed by his hand. "A nice, little gift for ya."

He smiled and presented to you in a closed fist. You shakily uncurled his rough fingers off his palm to reveal... a nice little keychain?

"They said it's a limited edition! So I got ya one, I saw a bunch of youngins' goin' crazy over it. Must be the newest, hottest thing among the kids these days."

You sucked your lips in and stared at it, wide eye. You're not admitting it to anyone, but you secretly longed for it ever since you saw a promotional advertisement on your social media feed. You knew back then you could never afford it because it's $30 for this piece of metal alloy and you had to buy a meal to be eligible to get it.

However, you're not fooling anyone. Montgomery and Evangeline can see how obvious you desperately wanted it upon presentation. Evangeline shook her head, now knowing that her friend is susceptible to predatory marketing tactics. Montgomery grinned from ear to ear, knowing that he could take advantage of this situation.

Before your twitchy fingers could grab it, Montgomery pulled it away and dangled it over your head.

"Where's my thanks?" He teasingly brought his face closer to yours.

You quickly mumbled some words of gratitude before trying to reach for that desired toy. He laughed at your pathetic attempt to grab it, he's too tall for you and you're too unathletic to hop far.

Evangeline almost shot up when she saw his other hand hovering around your waist. Montgomery noticed this reaction of hers and decided to place it on the table, where you and her could see.

"I only accept gratitude in kisses or phone numbers." He pressed his forehead against yours while smirking cockily.

You sat back down. Despair surfaced in your eyes as you went back to eating the coq au Vin.

"Huh? You don't wanna take it?" You shook your head and did not say a word more. The conversation is over and it's not worth it for a piece of overpriced trash.

Montgomery's smile dropped and he turned his focus to Evangeline, who simply gave him a polite, but smug smile.

"You know, it isn't a gift if you expect something in return." Evangeline innocently commented, unwrapping her burger. "It's a transaction now."

Montgomery looked away and paid no mind to her words.

She continued to jab at him verbally.

"So... is your relationship with (name)... transactional? Are you their sugar daddy?"

Anger flashed on his face as he whipped his head to Evangeline. She grinned toothily as she felt a sense of accomplishment by striking a nerve in Montgomery.

"Hey, you watch your mouth, spoiled brat." He hissed through a clenched jaw while pointing menacingly at her.

"I'm just asking a question, sir. It really does seem like you're doing all these seemingly nice gestures, just to get something back." She batted her eyelashes and pouted.

"Shut your trap, you ain't know nothin' about our relationship." Montgomery's veins are starting to show, you cower in the corner, staring at Evangeline and silently pleading her not to go on. But all she did was give you a reassuring look, mixed with a devilish one.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend sir. You're right, I don't know anything about your relationship with (name). That's why, I'm asking! I want to educate myself, so I can do better!" She spoke in the most fake performative tone ever, you could tell she was doing this on purpose to rile Montgomery up.

"You ask too many questions, Goldilocks. Ya' need to mind ya' own business." Montgomery started gritting his teeth and balling his fists.

"I'm not judging! I promise. There isn't anything wrong with having a transactional relationship, I think it's a good thing we can choose how to define our-"

"I was just kiddin', Baby." Montgomery cooed at you. Simultaneously cutting Evangeline off.

He fixed the keychain onto the zipper of your bag. "You ain't need to give anything back. I'm doin' all these because that's what a good man would do for their partners." He ruffled your hair.

Montgomery glared at Evangeline who is now having a self-congratulatory grin on her blemish-free face.

"God, y'all rich people sound the same." He grumbled, taking out his own burger and began eating.

"Thank you! We take our speech classes very seriously." That earned a scoff from Montgomery.

She hummed and tapped her chin. Brewing up more ways to mess with Montgomery.

While she took her sweet time, you finished your meal from Yves. You're not hungry anymore, so you didn't touch the food Montgomery brought.

Of course, he noticed it. "Yer food is gonna get cold, soggy fries are the worst." He tipped the bag so you would have easier access to its contents. "Dig in, sweetheart. Ain't nothin' to be shy about. They're all for ya'."

You declined, saying that you're full.

"Aw, come on. You gotta eat, you're growin'! You need your nutrients and-"

"Aren't you a bit too old to be sitting with us?" Evangeline crossed her legs and watched him intently, her pupils dilated out of mischief and curiosity. He groaned and rolled his eyes at her.

"I'm not playin' with you. Shut up." He snarled while he opened your burger box for you to eat out of.

"But sir! You're--"

Montgomery slammed his fist on the table.

"I'm grown, they're grown, you're grown. Age ain't nothin' but a number at this point. We're all adults here, you better start actin' like one, ya' little shit." He rose from his chair and made himself look bigger to intimidate Evangeline into stopping. But she persisted with that irritatingly confident smirk of hers.

"Hmm. I wouldn't conflate legality with morality. (Name) and I are still very young, after all. I'm sure you're wise and mature, it comes with age. We can learn a lot from you, sir!" Her tone became increasingly condescending and mocking, her baby blues bore holes into Montgomery's dark eyes.

You could see his lower eyelid twitching out of fury. Your friend is definitely going to get pummeled into a pulp if she doesn't back down. But she either refused to heed your quiet warnings or is oblivious to it.

"Listen here, you piece of--"

He was interrupted by an alarm blaring from his back pocket. Montgomery fished it out and took a look at his phone screen.

He frowned, grumbling incoherently under his breath as he began packing up.

"You were saying? And, where are you going--"

"To work! God damn! You're fuckin' annoying!" He exclaimed at her. All Evangeline did was maintain her straight posture and sweet smile.

"Aw. I'm sorry to hear that. Could you please tell me what I did wrong? I only wanted to learn..." He ignored her completely and whipped out his wallet. Montgomery pulled out two $20 notes and stuffed it into your bag. The man made sure to zip it up, so it wouldn't slip out.

"Treat yourself to somethin' nice after class. I'll be late, so don't wait up- go home with goldie, it ain't that safe to use the bus at night. Unless you wanna give me your number..." The man looked at you with hopeful eyes. You shook your head and he rolled his eyes in annoyance.

"That's so sweet of you! Giving (name) some money to spend, just like a sugar daddy would!" She clapped her hands in excitement.

"Shut. Up." He pointed his index finger at her. Evangeline gave him Jazz hands and an open-mouth smile. Then, Montgomery turned to you.

"You gotta pick better friends, baby." He kissed you on the forehead before you could react. Cringing at how his stubble would scratch you and his hair leaving a mild greasy residue on your skin. His lips were dry and leathery, the experience was disgusting to you.

You let out a shout and tried your best to shove him away. But all you did was make him sway a little.

"Bye honey, I'll see you around." He gave you a brief, affectionate pinch on the cheek before taking off.

You and Evangeline looked at the vast number of food items he left for you. Neither of you took a bite out of anything.

You asked her if she wanted to bring it back home. She shook her head.

You decided to pack them up for your housemates instead, hopefully gaining some of their favour while Yves is away.

Evangeline wrapped her own untouched burger back up and dumped it into the paper bag.

You felt a buzz in your pocket. So you fished it out to see what was causing it.

A text from Yves was displayed on your notifications.

"I miss you."

You deem it as something unimportant, just a random thought that your boyfriend opt to share just for the sake of sharing. Totally not hinting you to call him back. So you turned your phone off and returned your device back to your pocket.

Your class is in 10 minutes anyways, you and Evangeline better hurry and wrap up soon.

Evangeline Céliath, The Angelic Huntress

⋆ Character Traits + Headcanons

Daughter of an angel and a human woman; her father is the leader of the Virtues and represents the Virtue of Temperance.

French heritage from mother's side, can speak it since she was 8;

Thanks to her jackass father strong angelical genes, she have long, straight pearly white hair, from her mother she heritated her jade-green eyes;

Have a beauty mark on the left corner of her mouth that's not exactly a beauty mark, it's a spiritual scar that showed up after a very traumatic episode...

Is 175cm / 5'9 inches tall, hourglass figure (we stan a big boobed curvy lady here)

Her favorite colors are white and light blue.

Met with Dante when he was 19 and she 18, in the middle of a hunt, and lets just say they didn't started well; they started as strangers to rivals, but that good, healthy rivalry.

Around their 20s, they became roommates because Evangeline did not lived at the same city Dante lives + at that point they were pretty comfortable friends around each other.

And they were roommates... omg they were roommates

She's from a city called Caelumia — a healthy, fancy city that's known for the "The Doorway to Heaven" status.

Dante have many, many angel-related petnames for Evangeline: lovebird, birdie, wingaboo <- this one in particular is similar to Chat Noir calling Ladybug "bugaboo", cherubabe, but his ultimate favourite is angelcake. In return, she calls him daredevil.

^ You'll hardly see Dante calling Evangeline by her actual name, though. It's either the petnames or variants of her name (Angie, Line, Vangie, Angel).

She have a thing for hazelnut flavoured food, especially hazelnut cookies with cinnamon on it, it's her comfort food.

Also have a several sweet-tooth.

Evangeline's Angel Trigger is brown, white and gold colored and looks very much like this.

Her wings are summonable by will (it wasn't until she hitted her 15 years), whether on Angel Trigger or not and are very big, eagle-like shaped with golden-brown feathers.

^ now cut for Dante snuggling on her wings whenever he can.

Is a Devil Hunter not because she had some demonic-related traumatic episode, she hunts them because she saw what horrors they are capable to do with the Human World and with the humans who cannot defend themselves properly; and it didn't seemed fair that she, who's strong and capable to rip them with her bare hands, wouldn't do something to "repair" it.

Evangeline's combat moves style are inspired by ballet moves, she wields her spear with grace but precise choreography.

Speaking of, angels have a thing for spears and absolutely despises swords like the demons use because "we are creatures born from pure light, they are unhinged darkness so we're better than them bla bla bla". So, since ever, Evangeline was trained to wield spears, having one named Adamant.

Does sculpting on wood and knows how to draw, but overall prefers sculpting.

When she's whiny enough she snuggles on Dante, giving him lots of kisses and squeezes just the way he likes.

A Review of Multiplication (Part 1)

Félix look like he’s wearing wicked eye-liner in this shot.

The lyrics of the opening are "In the daytime, I’m Marinette", which implies that she’s someone different in the nighttime. But she’s still Marinette in the nighttime. In fact, most of her battles take place during the day.

These title cards hasn’t appeared in the previous seasons, did they? If they did, I do not remember. I like them, they look very solemn, ceremonious. You can tell from the title along that this season is going to be serious.

The video of the late Miraculous Team all together looks very cool, intimidating. Some of their most well-dressed members are here – Rena Furtive, Coq Courage, Vesperia, Chat Noir – adding a strong air of fearlessness and style.

Adrien needs to star in more campaigns. The same material has been recycled since Season 1.

Félix has a Wikipage? He’s a famous person then. His last name is Fathom now? Seeing that neither Ladybug nor Chat Noir, Marinette and Adrien, reacted to this change as if it’s new news, I assume that’s the name Félix was always supposed to have.

It’s always heartbreaking when siblings don’t get along in media, that’s one of my most hated tropes. Especially if the parent is abusive in some way, and one sibling decide to betray the rest of his brethren in order to maintain that parent’s false love. I know Adrien and Félix are cousins, but the same sentiment stands. Great portrayals of sibling relations are Claire and Fleabag in Fleabag, and Evangeline and Ptolemus in The Red Queen.

What a shot.

And where were you for the last few episodes?

I don’t really blame Su-Han for not being a mentor to Ladybug. Technically, he never came to Paris to be her supervisor, he went there to take the Miraculous Box away from her. Ladybug and Chat Noir managed to convince Su-Han to let Ladybug keep the Miraculous Box, and she was meant to prove herself while he watches from afar. He stepped in during moments such as Éphémère when clearly there’s been some significant faults in Ladybug’s management. What could be criticised of Su-Han is, that, clearly, Ladybug is a child, she never would 've been able to properly look after the Miraculous on her own either way, especially in the state of her stress and no proper guidance from Wang Fu in the first place. Su-Han was setting her up for failure. Since he allowed her to keep the Miraculous, Su-Han should've remained with Ladybug and taught her how to keep it properly. It’s much more interesting to watch Marinette do her own thing without someone crowding over her throughout Season 4, but realistically, Marinette eventually losing the Miraculous Box was always going to happen.

Either the animation ran out of budget, or Stompp is really unimpressed by Gabriel.

Props to Ladybug and Chat Noir for ending the conversation with Su-Han so quickly. There was no need to drag that tedious argument out. Pointing fingers right now, punishing each other under some mythic court, isn’t going to help the solution at all. Wise words: in times of urgent difficulty, don’t put too much effort into anything that doesn’t contribute to the solution.

I don’t mind seeing Adrien’s face all over Paris, but he desperately needs some new material.

Again the decision to immediately find Félix rather than chasing some roundabout ploy is very impressive. Adore that this season has been going for the throat of issues rather than beating around the bush.

It possibly couldn’t have taken that much effort to replace these nonsense filler with an actual description. Seriously, how much effort could it’ve taken? It reminds me of Adrien’s cover issue of Style Queen in Season 4. It’s just the title, his picture, and a bunch nonsense Latin headlines. Little touches like actually writing a description would've really shown the dedication the creative team has towards Miraculous; they could’ve also included fun little tidbits or Easter Eggs here. Like – Félix was born in Oxfordshire, or that his great-grandfather is of Irish descent, or something. Some of the information seems to be accurate even if their category are gibberish. Félix’s birthday (?) is apparently the second of December, his nationality is British, and for some reason, his closet relative is listed as Gabriel Agreste.

Félix and Adrien are both aristocrats, aristocratic descents, officially confirmed. Nice.

And Félix’s father is an American billionaire! Interesting. That’ll provide a lot of material for additional shenanigans. Being American-British suits Félix, Mr Worldwide, just like how being Anglo-French suits Adrien very well. Also, Félix a chess, equestrian, and kung fu prodigy! The child is a genius. "England’s youngest graduate", no mentions on a graduate of what, but I’m guessing university. I knew it! Félix seems like the kind of person to be studious and attached to his academic works, so the fact that he’s constantly out of school, I deduced that he probably didn’t need to attend because he already fulfilled the requirements. I was right! Félix is an adept!

Their penthouse suite is so nice. Very modern and luxurious, yet warm. Someplace you can really live in. It’s sweet that Amélie thought that Félix was visiting Adrien, points to the fact that the two cousins are supposed to have a close relationship. I really hope Adrien and Félix patches their relationship in Season 5. I want Adrien to have something that’s not always tied back to Ladybug. Although, knowing the temperament of the show, I’m going to end up disappointed but not surprised.

That is stunning.

Also realising that Astro Cat has aerodynamic fins on his calves.

Her suit is so glittery. It resembles the foil space shuttles are wrapped in to reflect UV rays.

I like that Marinette immediately contacts her support system, Alya, literally the only person who knows that she’s Ladybug who can offer her support rather than more problems. Just easily asking her best friend to come over and stay.

Adrien’s line "I should’ve never listened to Félix, I should’ve listened to Marinette" – I don’t like it. I don’t like the suggested narrative that Marinette is the one person in Adrien’s life that will never do him wrong and treat him nice. Don’t get me wrong, Marinette is nice and all, but a person need more in their life than just a single pillar, a single person. Adrien should have other interests and other fixations to be attached to.

This man is a terrible father, he really is. At this point, there’s no way any feasible defence can be risen for him. What are you doing, Gabriel? This is honestly pathetic, even for you.

"I don’t want to be a model anymore." "Fine." Well, that was easy.

I am very cruel. She has all rights to be upset, but the many times Marinette needs reassurance is starting to be grating. This is not a true criticism on her, it has everything to do with me. I’m just that kind of person.

"Miraculous and there Kwami?" Shouldn’t it be the other way around? The Kwami came before the Miraculous.

Marinette decides to abandon her passion for Adrien because it has been messing up her head, disrupting her duties as Guardian. Wise choice. But trying to cut oneself completely off, cold turkey, like that is bound to have suppressed and explosive consequences.

The perspective is so good? Why this random impressive shot?

Completely irrelevant detail, but I characterise Adrien’s nails as being quite long. Chat Noir powers bleeding into his human side with prolonged use of Miraculous resulting in certain anomalies such as increased sense of sight, smell, and longer nails. That’s not canon.

Aw, she’s so happy for him.

Maybe it’s my bias, but I never honestly thought Adrien and Marinette had a 'special' connection. They do have a lot of 'intimate' moments on screen, and Adrien is probably the closet to Marinette outside of any female classmate that isn’t Chloé or Alya, but there just wasn’t a foundation for a romantic relationship to me. A lot of platonic brushes, sure, but nothing that really seem to spell out the route for a once-in-a-life romance. I think it’s because Marinette and Adrien have so much similarities, not enough contrast. It’s difficult to determine what they may see in each other that they don’t already see in themselves. I’m going to be honest, and know that this is coming from a place of love because Adrien is my favourite character, but Adrien is quite a dull love interest. Literal damsel-in-distress, he doesn’t offer anything on his own. Throughout the show, he’s the pretty prize that the protagonist get whenever she sufficiently completes a certain set of tasks (only for him to get snatched from right under her nose every time due to the plot).

Adrien’s pyjamas are killing me. They look exactly like the kind of entry-level products high-end brands sell to entice low-income customers. Y’all ever seen those three-hundred-dollar sweatshirts with no embellishments other than a giant Gucci logo stamped across the chest? Yeah, like that. This child is a walking advertisement. Gabriel, let your kid wear clothes.

This is the funniest way I’ve seen someone fall asleep for some time. Instantly conked out, the lights just turn off on their own, lying over the sheets. lmao.

Today on the list of things LAURENT dislikes: Adrien’s room. Marinette’s room has her colour scheme and personality, Adrien’s room – it looks like what a distant and wealthy parent would give to their only child in lieu for being unable to spend with them. That’s exactly what it is.

The first thing Nathalie does when she comes back to the Agreste Manor is to check on Adrien, not confront Gabriel. That’s so sweet. It really shows how much Nathalie’s priorities has changed.

Madame Bustier is finally showing the pregnancy she announced two years ago. And she changed outfits, a teal sweater in replacement of her signature cyan shirt.

They just – straight out announced that Alix is Bunnix? That sounds risky. But I suppose there’s not much else they could’ve done, the secret would’ve been out eventually. By announcing it themselves, it gives Ladybug and Chat Noir a chance to manipulate an uncontrollable situation. And I suppose that if Monarch is inspiring to trying something against Alix’s family, he has to do it with the knowledge that Alix can really screw up his past and future in pre-retaliation.

Max states that Monarch has 78.95% of the Miraculous – that’s not right? There are nineteen Miraculous and Monarch has 16 of them, excluding the Ladybug, Black Cat, and Peafowl, making him the proud owner of 84.21%. What is this random statistic? Did someone in the writing room not bother to calculate it or am I missing something?

Chloé coming in with the caustic criticism as she always does, that it was Ladybug and Chat Noir’s fault for losing the Miraculous. Just like with Nathalie, I’m surprised Chat Noir is mentioned, Chloé usually treats him like he doesn’t exist. This season is really cracking down on the Ladybug and Chat Noir part of the synopsis. Queen Bee was a great hero, for the short time she had the Miraculous. She was fierce, deadly, and flamboyant. I prefer Queen Bee over Vesperia, as I feel that a Bee Hero should be full of sting and venom, quick to act, but furiously protective of her hive (team). Vesperia is like a drone worker rather than a Queen, a follower rather than a leader. Another weapon in Ladybug’s arsenal. The only two people that has ever challenged Ladybug’s rule is Chat Noir and Queen Bee, at various time, for reasons of various validity. Whether or not they were right, Ladybug does need people around her to pose other plans and disagree with her at times. A team can’t function if it’s only consisting of one person and their yes-man appendages. The whole point of having the team is to utilise different skills together and combine perspectives, rather than adhere to one view. That being said, my solution for the Chloé vs Zoé deal is for them to share the Bee Miraculous. When Ladybug needs support, send in Vesperia. When Ladybug needs sting, send in Queen Bee. They’re both good Bees in their own respective styles.

Lila coming in with a sweet, calm, and elegant defence of Ladybug. Making this argument reinforces Lila’s 'good girl' façade, and paints her as the heroine compared to Chloé’s villainy. But notice what words Lila uses: "she [Ladybug] was bound to make a few mistakes. We have to find the strength to forgive her." Very insidious, Lila doesn’t argue that it wasn’t Ladybug’s fault, and places herself as a moral centre, "we have to find the strength to forgive her." I feel like somewhere later in the season, as Lila has established herself now as Ladybug’s supporter, when she eventually 'turns against' the heroine, the rest of Paris might be compelled to follow.

Also, Lila looks really pretty here. Dimpled smile, feathery lashes. Her romper is very dark in this image. It’s usually a medium grey. I hope they keep the black. Grey is a great colour, but using it incorrectly makes a mannequin look tired, and unstylish. Ariana Grande's 2021 Grammy gown was peak ballgown fashion, I am willing to physically fight anyone that disagrees.

I did not expect Gabriel to make a deal with Tomoe; no, I did not see that coming at all. It makes sense, she’s just as ruthlessly ambitious as he is, and they do have professional contracts between their companies. But I just didn’t expect Gabriel to ever let someone else into his secrets. Nathalie wouldn't bother, but Tomoe seems like the kind of person to backstab Gabriel if something ever goes wrong.

Yoga is not calming for me, personally. In fact, one might say yoga stresses me out.

13th Game - City of Mist

All right, time to get to the third of my four favorite games. (The last is Monster of the Week and will likely do that one late this year or early next year because there's a thing I'm waiting for).

(and just so it is the picture in the thumbnail, here's a City of Heroes made picture for this character)

So, City of Mist is a game of noir superheroes takes place in a city where people are empowered by connections to a story. This story can be any sort of thing ranging ancient myths to comic books to overall concepts. As some examples, here are some other characters I've made or seen in games:

In any case, the characters will have a combination of a Mythos, the supernatural aspect that gives them power, and a Logos, their day to day normal life. Though "normal" here is relative because you could be a "vigilante" or "lab test subject" as easily as "housewife" or "fire fighter". The only thing is that it is something that we could reasonably see being a situation that someone would be in, in the real world.

From there, you choose four themebooks. There are Logos and Mythos themebooks and you need at least one of each. So you would have one of these combinations:

Touched: 3 Logos, 1 Mythos

Borderliner: 2 Logos, 2 Mythos

Legendary: 1 Logos, 3 Mythos

Within the narrative, a Legendary character is substantially more powerful than a Borderliner or Touched character, but gameplay wise all three are balanced in the amount of bonuses they can get to rolls. As explained here:

Each of the four themebooks represent major character themes. Perhaps you have a signature piece of gear, that would be Possessions themebook for mundane gear like a sports car or a Relic for a magic weapon. You might have a formative event from your past. That's a Defining Event. If you have powers to alter the world around you, that's Expression. So on and so forth.

Step One: Concept

So, to start with, I've done a build of this before, and that was Yuri Ayler, a competitive archer whose sister had died recently. I don't want to re-use that because it will prevent me from actually thinking through the idea. So I'm going to make a new character and I'm going to name her Steffani Noel. She goes by Stef.

Now, for her mythos, the obvious choice would be Stheno, given the name. But we're not required to do that. We could have Stef's mythos be Stheno specifically, Gorgons in a more general sense, or even the specific gorgon of a different story like Clash of the Titans.

In this case, I think I am going to say her Mythos is the idea of Gorgons in general rather than any specific one.

So now, let's consider the Logos. Let's think of some real world roles or occupations that could work with the idea of an archer. Yuri Ayler was a competitive sport archer, which is an option, of course, but I want to do something a bit different. City of Mist also mostly takes place within an urban environment, but there's accounting for having nearby semi-rural areas. So park ranger isn't completely out of bounds, but feels a bit meh. What I think I'm going to do is have her as a sporting goods store owner.

So that presents the following:

I think Stef is going to be a borderliner. So, two of each. I'm actually going to make her a very locational based hero and give her both Turf and Enclave. Yuri didn't have the gaze, but in this case I think I will go for that and give Stef an Expression. For the fourth themebook, I'm going to go with Defining Event.

So now, we complete each of the Themebooks answering certain questions associated with each book. So, for each Themebook we're going to have the following:

One title for the theme.

One Concept which doesn't have much mechanics but forms a guideline for what makes sense for you to be able to do with that theme.

One Identity/Mystery, a statement of self that anchors you to your life or a question that drives you. Mythos themes get Mysteries, Logos themes get Identities.

Three Power Tag questions

One Weakness Question

A relationship with one of the other crew members.

In addition, we will choose one Theme to get an extra Power Tag and extra Weakness.

For the purposes of showing the History, we're going to give her four Crew members, one for each theme. This is a fairly large group to play this game with those. Anyway, that Crew will be:

Maxine Itami - Rift of the First Person Shooter and Online Gamer

Kylie Swift - Rift of the Banshee and Street Musician

Ada Sainz - Rift of the Hell Hound and Veterinarian

Mika Lala - Rift of Blahaj and Therapist

I'll explain the mechanics of Tags and Weaknesses after character creation.

Step Three - Use the Themebooks to choose theme components

So, we're going to start with the Logos themes.

Logos Theme - Turf

So, the themebook gives some basic questions to help inspire you about your concept for a themebook. I'm not sure I really need them and they don't particularly have mechanics attached, but I'll look through them anyway to see if it gives some ideas. Rather, there's a single question and three example answers.

The question is "What is your Domain?" and the answer is going to be a variation of "I am the head honcho at _________". And we're going to use the name of the shop as the title of the Turf.

Let's see, the mythical Python was a great serpent associated with oracles and a child of Gaea. They laired at Delphi and were slain by Apollo who set up his own oracle at Delphi.

So, we're going to go with "Gaea's Girl - Sporting Supplies". With a concept of "independently owned sporting good shop."

For the Identity, we can't just say what the Turf is, we have to make a statement about our relationship to it. Ambitions for its future, strong emotions attached to it, or other sorts of statements that can be threatened in game play. I'm going to say "This was Mother's gift to me and I'll make her proud." So, I'm going to say that her mother funded her to buy the land and building for her shop.

So, now we get to Power Tag and Weakness questions. Each Theme has ten possible Power Tag questions and four Weakness questions. Of these, we will answer the question marked with the letter A and choose two other questions and then we will choose one of the four weakness questions.

So for Power Tags, I'm choosing the following questions. (Again, question A is mandatory.

A: What area or domain do you control?

D: Who in your turf follows your orders?

I: What advantage do you have over your competition in your Turf

And for the Weakness, I'm going with:

B: What negative behavior or quality did you develop in your role as leader?

So, the answers should short statements, things that can be easily quoted as a catch phrase, or easily worked into a narrative description. And I'm going with the following.

Power Tags:

A: shop full of sporting gear

D: enthusiastic and well-paid team

I: loyal customer base

So, if she has a need for rope, tents, pitons, ammunition, or anything in that vein. She can get it easy enough from her own shop. Her employees are friendly and well-paid, so they are eager to be there. Finally, she has a lot of repeat customers and they lead on to other customers via word of mouth.

Weakness:

B: "No time to relax."

I envision that Stef puts everything she has into her business. She's probably the sort of owner that will cut her own pay rather than that of her employees and she probably doesn't delegate nearly as much work as she should.

Now Crew Relationships will provide either a Hurt or a Help related to the named Crew member. A Hurt is used to give a crew member a -1 to a roll while a Help is used to give them a +1. As a note, there are times when you can use a Hurt to prevent a crew member from doing something that you think will be bad from them in the long run. And you can use Help to push enable them along a self-destructive path. But these do generally represent lingering emotions between the two of you.

For this case I'm going with

"You once caught one of them operating in your turf. Tell them what you said. If they complied, take a Help point on them. If they ignored you, take a Hurt point on them."

What I think happened is she caught Kylie Swift busking outside her store and asked her to not do it so close to the entrances. However, Kylie refused to do it. Stef didn't want to resort to trespassing her team mate, and people have started to chuckle at or ignore the repeated low-stake arguments between the two. So Kylie continues to busk there and the result is a Hurt on Kylie.

Now we do the same for the other three themes.

Logos Theme - Defining Event

The inspiration question here is "What happened to you that changed your life forever?" So, what I'm going to say here is that her shop was robbed by a man with a couple of thugs with a gun and a Molotov cocktail. When the cocktail was thrown at one of her employees she moved to shove them out of the way and was badly burned as a result.

Title: Robbery and Arson

Concept: I was burned in an attempted robbery.

Identity: I'd do anything to protect my people.

Now for the Power Tag questions I want to answer:

A: What kind of strong emotion did your defining event leave you with?

F: What skill or mundane ability did you pick up during or due to your defining event?

H: What approach to life did you adopt following your defining event?

Next, the Weakness question:

D: What is now broken within you, physically or mentally, due to your defining event?

And the answers to the Power tags will be:

A: fierce rage and protectiveness

F: mastered the bow

H: "I can't let them down."

The whole event set a cold, snake-like fury into her veins. She will protect her people and her territory as much as she can. To do this, she picked up the bow, figuring it was a quiet weapon that was less regulated than guns. Finally, she has burdened herself with the need to make sure she lives up to the expectations of her family, employees, and customers... even if some of those expectations are ones she decided they should have of her.

Finally, the Weakness answer:

D: severe burn scars

Stef's face and body was severely burned, which comes with occasional spikes of pain and a decidedly shocking appearance that new people aren't used to.

For Stef's crew relationship here, I'm going to go with the following question:

"One of them is trying to help you (or make you) get over your defining event and move on. If you appreciate it, take a Help point on them. If you resent it, take a Hurt point on them."

I'm going to say that Mika has been trying to be there for Stef and be someone to listen to. She provides counter points to some of Stef's most self-destructive arguments and thoughts on the matter and is basically trying to slowly chip away at the damage. Stef appreciates this and thus she takes Help on Mika.

Mythos Theme - Expression

So, where as Logos themes get an Identity that anchors things to the character's non-supernatural life, the Mythos has a Mystery which is a question that drives them forward into adventure. The Expression theme is all about how the character's supernatural power influences the world around them. This can include things like mind control, weather control, super strength, fire powers, or anything of the like.

The inspiration question is "What change does your Mythos wish to effect in the world?"

The phrasing of that is important. It is unclear what exactly the Mythos is. Possibilities include:

The truth of a supernatural being that has forgotten who they are.

The influence of an entity reliving itself through a human.

A metaphysical modeling of powers via a familiar tale.

The game calls the heroes "Rifts" but notes that the term is mostly for game-mechanic purposes, to have something in text to refer to, and that in-universe there's no common term that all the Rifts go by. Some Rifts have never even heard of the story they gain power from, while for others it is a well known story they have long thought about.

What is consistent is that the Mythos is more about repeating its story than about seeking the goals of the beings in that story. As such letting the Mythos rampant and override the Logos, called becoming an Avatar, is never something you want to last very wrong. An Avatar has lost connection to humanity and it will do everything to recreate its story on an epic scale. A Rift of a legendarily kind entity still becomes a monstrous danger because the Mythos doesn't have the entity's morals... it just wants to repeat the rehash the story.

So, how does the Gorgon wish to change the world? Let's say the Gorgon wants to punish everyone for her suffering.

That said, let's look at this:

Title: Gorgon's Gaze

Concept: The gorgon seeks to punish the world for her suffering.

Mystery: Why did this happen to me?

For the Power Tag Questions:

A: What is the most common way you use your Mythos to affect the world?

G: What additional expression, not necessarily related to the main one, does your mythos have?

J: How can you use your power to shield yourself, especially from similar effects?

And the Weakness:

A: What situations or conditions weaken or suppress your Mythos' Expressions

The Power Tag answers will be:

A: petrifying gaze

G: vipers for hair

J: bulwark of rage

So, of course, the primary expression is her ability to turn people to stone with a look, but she also has vipers for hair which she could attack with or use to spot trouble coming. Most people wouldn't notice the snakes because the Mist hides the supernatural aspects of the world from most people. Finally, she is protected by the vast amount of rage she now harbors in her heart. This makes it especially difficult to affect her with emotional attacks or to stop her through mere pain.

With the Weakness answer being:

A: They have to see me.

Unfortunately, if someone can't see her, they're not going to be affected by her gaze. They can still be bitten by the snakes, but a significant portion of her power has been avoided by people that can't see her.

Crew Relationships for Mythos themes talk about how the two crew members have interacted with or relate to each other's powers and Mythoi. Perhaps one Mythoi feels a kinship or suspicion with another. Perhaps one Rift has helped you protect or deal with your supernatural abilities. For this I'm going with the following question:

"To your Mythos, one of them seems like the modern-day version of a character in its legend. If they were your foe in the legend, take a Hurt point on them. If they were your ally or loved one, or if you were their rescuer, take a Help point on them."

I'm going to say that they have mixed feelings about Maxine Itami, they recognize Maxine's past and near death experience is similar to their own situation with the robbery. However, the Gorgon part of her (assuming it is part of her and not an eldritch other) looks at Maxine and is reminded of the various adventurers that come to their lair to slay the monster. So, she takes a Hurt on Maxine.

Mythos Theme - Enclave

The inspiring question for this is going to be "What location serves an important role in your mythos?" In this case I'm going to say it's a Statuary Garden full of the trophies of past victories and places to hide and ambush foes. As we want Stef to be a hero, I'm ambivalent on having the garden fell of actual petrified enemies. It could be that a representative trophy is made when a victory occurs. On the other hand, this game tends to be on the gritty side, so she might very well store the statues of people she found too dangerous to let live.

It's important to remember that every hero in City of Mist has the seeds to become a villain.

So, for the concept section:

Title: Statuary Garden

Concept: A place that carries reminders of pain and conflict.

Mystery: "How can I bring life to this ruin?"

So now we go to the Power Tag questions:

A: What or where is your Enclave?

C: How can you access your Enclave quickly, discreetly, etc?

J: What item, skill, or quality do you keep when you leave the Enclave?

With the Weakness question of:

B: What happens when you've spent too long in your Enclave?

The answers for the power tags are as follows:

A: ruin of dark shadows and terror

C: walk through lonely places

J: instinct for stalking

The statuary garden is a lonely place that appears to have been abandoned for centuries and allowed to become overgrown and falling apart. There are statues of people and animals in poses of terror all over the place. Stef can access the garden, or lead people to it, by walking through lonely areas, like an abandoned building, or an unknown alleyway. She probably has a basement storage mostly forgotten about in her shop that she can use to reach it as well. This means that if she plans her route, then she can lead enemies into the garden for a battle. Finally, she has learned how to stalk enemies through her time in the garden.

Finally the Weakness answer comes as follows:

B: depression and self-loathing

The garden as it currently exists is a place of death and destruction and does nothing to remind Stef of anything good about her life. Staying too long in the garden will deepen the negative ways she views herself. Especially as her Mystery drives her to find out how she can bring life to the place again and make it something different.

For the crew relationship question I'm choosing to answer

"When your Enclave was in danger of being discovered or damaged, one of them stepped up to cover for your or had your back. Take a Help point on them."

I'm going to say it was Ada Sainz and say that in an early case when some thugs managed to get into the Garden somehow while Stef was busy, Ada followed and took care of them.

Extra Tags

Now we come to one Theme that will get an extra Power Tag and an Extra Weakness tag. And I feel like I've got most of the Themes where I want them for the start of this character, but I feel like the Statuary Garden could use more filling out.

So, we're going to get a fourth Power Tag and second Weakness for Enclave. These are going to be:

Power Tag D: What protects your Enclave?

Weakness Tag D: What could hinder you from accessing or using your Enclave?

And these will be the Answers:

Power D: serpents and shadows

Weakness D: too many bystanders

So, now we can further see that the garden is full of shadowy places to hide in and many serpents which will help her defend the place by attacking intruders. Unfortunately, if there are too many people around, she won't be able to reach it. So if she leads enemies through what she expects to be an empty warehouse and instead finds a rave, she'll be stuck in the mundane world.

Crew Theme

A Crew theme is like any other themebook with some differences. Every character in the Crew has access to it and its Tags will "burn" when they are used. What this means is that whenever the team uses a Crew power tag to add a bonus to a roll or introduce something to the story then that tag cannot be re-used until something is done to refresh it. A character's tags can also burn, but usually that's as a result of making a desperate gamble or as a consequence of bad luck.

There's also only one set of Crew theme questions, though there are a lot of example ways to create them.

As with the other themebooks there are some inspiring questions before we get to Power Tags and Weaknesses.

What is our shared goal?

Who or what brought us together?

Why do we work together? What does each member contribute to the cause?

Where do we meet? Where do we collect our evidence or prepare for action?

What sort of resources do we have at our disposal?

Three of the stories I chose are related to violence or death, and are similar in many ways to each other. The fourth member I deliberately made an outlier to anchor them and made it a story about the kindness of a shark bringing food to an old man. I'm thinking the group is trying to resist the gentrification of their neighborhood and have found that there are supernatural forces at play in the situation.

Also, note, that for a Crew theme, you can give it either an Identity or a Mystery. We're going for an Identity in this case.

Title: Peach Circle Protectors

Identity: This is our home and nobody's going to take it.

Concept: A crew of superheroes resisting gentrification and other threats.

For the Power Tag questions, we can choose any three questions and are not required to answer the A question... but I'm going to anyway. I'm choosing:

A: How do you help, assist, or support one another?

C: Who is guiding, backing, or assisting your operation?

H: What sort of reputation or name have you made for yourselves?

The Weakness tag I am going for will be the following:

D: What places or situations do you find tough to handle?

So the answers to the Power tags will be as follows:

A: understanding and honesty

C: Countess and Princess

H: reliable and down to Earth

So, despite everything, the four have all experienced tragedy and initially came together through a support group before learning that the four of them all had some supernatural things as well as the public trauma. As such, they have gained a habit of trying to be honest and supportive of each other. It's not a 100% successful thing. Things are still hidden and feelings are still hurt, but they have a better connection than most.

The Countess and Princess are a reference to one of my past played characters (Patricia Althius, Rift of the Count of Monte Cristo and Lamashtu) and her girlfriend (Hayley Hayami, Rift of Medusa) who later in the campaign would have come back as mysterious rich people to start to carry out their revenges on various evil-doers. I felt these two in late game would make a good support for this vengeance-focused team.

Finally, the local neighborhood may not know everything the team has done for them, heck they might not even know who the team is if secret identities are going on, but there's an ongoing reputation that the local heroes have a good head on their shoulders.

And next is the Weakness:

D: "There's never enough money."

Even with patrons like The Countess and The Princess, there's only so much money the team has available. And most of their backer's resources are mythical and supernatural anyway, that's hard to convert into a bank account.

Tags and Weaknesses

So, what do tags do? Whenever you apply a tag to a roll you gain a +1 bonus to that roll. When weaknesses are applied then you instead apply a -1 to the roll but you also grant that Theme one Attention and after three Attention you can give the Themebook an Improvement.

Tags also apply narrative justification for certain things. For example, Stef is going to have snakes for hair, and that will justify her attacking someone and giving them a venom related status as a result. Other characters would have to explain where the poison came from first.

Now, what's stopping you from using all tags on every roll? First of all, the tag has to apply, "petrifying gaze" isn't going to do anything to help breaking down a stone door, for example. Second is that you can't apply the same tag twice to the same situation. For example, say you had the tag "Bomb Disposal Expert" and added that to a roll for disarming a bomb but the roll doesn't completely end the danger. Well, you won't be able to use that tag on the next roll, because you've already applied those skills to this problem.

For Stef, she could apply the "petrifying gaze" to attempt to turn a hitman to stone, but perhaps she doesn't quite finish him off. On a future attack she would still be applying the petrifying gaze narratively, but she couldn't use the tag for a bonus to the roll because she's already thrown that in there. The stoning is still happening, yes, but the roll needs support elsewhere.

In combat, we tended to work this out by saying repeatedly attacking with no variation was just doing the same action over and over again and thus you would have a slowly dwindling supply of tags to use in the fight. Every so often, we'd then try to change up the strategy and create a new situation to justify refreshing all those tags.

As another note, it is possible to use a Weakness for a +1 (doing so would not grant Attention) or a Power tag for a -1 (doing so would grant Attention) if it makes sense. For example, Stef could use her "severe burn scars" to help her out intimidating someone or maybe even empowering her "petrifying gaze". Or the GM might poke her tag about "I can't let them down" as a -1 due to her being worried about someone getting hurt because she failed.

As a note, the same Tag can't be used for both a +1 and a -1 on the same roll. Similar to the "Bomb Disposal Expert" example above on using the same tag twice, that fact is already influencing matters.

Breaking Themes

It is also important to note that themebooks can go away and change. Mythos themes can Fade as that part of your legend is forgotten and Logos themes can Crack as that facet of your life is shattered or left behind. This is not a bad thing and exists for the most part at the control of the character.

When a theme cracks, the character will receive some "Build-Up" which allows for taking a global improvement called a "Moment of Evolution". Unlike with Attention to improve a themebook, global improvements require five Build Up and the only way to gain Build Up is to lose a theme.

Once a theme is lost, it will be replaced with a theme of the opposite type. A Mythos theme will be replaced by a Logos theme and vice versa. If the last theme of a type is lost then it will not be replaced and the character will instead have three Logos (becoming a Sleeper) or three Mythos (becoming an Avatar). These are both meant to be temporary states of being and once the character comes out of them, they will vanish for a while before returning as a basically an entirely fresh character, rebuilding themselves from scratch. A character who went Avatar will come back as a Touched and a character who went Sleeper will come back as a Legendary.

This mechanic allows for some of the deepest mechanical support of character development I've ever seen in any RPG. Look above at the two pictures of Patricia and Hayley to see the gulf in how they begin the game and how they end it. And the best part is that these changes are very very rarely dictated by the dice. They almost always come as a result of informed player choice. And even when dice cause it, the player is informed of the possibility of the risk before they roll.

Also note that I write down the letter of the questioned that is answered for each tag so that if there's question of what context the tag exists in we can look it up.

Movie Reviews: Marlowe / Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

This week I got to review not one but two new releases...both very different.

Marlowe

Raymond Chandler’s character Philip Marlowe was a private eye in his short stories and books in the 1930s on. Pretty soon Hollywood was adapting Marlowe stories into radio, television and films in the 1940s onward. Some of the Marlowe films I watched in my college History of Film class included Murder, My Sweet and The Big Sleep. Now Neil Jordan has adapted a 2014 Marlowe story written by John Banville into the new crime thriller Marlowe opening in theaters this week after some 2022 film festivals.

In 1940s Los Angeles, hardboiled private eye Marlowe (played by Liam Neeson in his 100th performance according to much press) is hired by a rich heiress Clare (Diane Kruger) to find her ex. The movie star mother (played by Jessica Lange) soon gets entangled. That’s about all I can say without getting into spoilers.

Director Neil Jordan has made some great movies in the past. I actually worked for a short time in the Construction Department on his 2007 movie The Brave One. That movie wasn’t perfect by any means, but it had its moments. But his films The Crying Game (he received Oscar nominations for directing and for writing), Interview with a Vampire, and The Butcher Boy really showed his range as a director in terms of excelling in various genres. This is a terrific cast, and I was excited to see Colm Meaney and Ian Hart, both of whom were in Monument Ave (which I worked on) in small supporting roles. The production design was big and lavish. But the problem is: I wanted to like this more than I did. I think the issue is that since the Marlowe films of the 40s, there’s been so many film noir classics and this story (even with a script from William Monahan, which wrote The Departed) it felt derivative of so many other film noirs. Between the character of Marlowe, Neil Jordan and this cast there was something so much better that could’ve been.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Marvel Cinematic Universe is hit or miss. Some elitist have said it’s not cinema (Martin Scorsese) or it’s too bad that they are the only types of movies getting made these days (Quentin Tarantino). But hardcore fans have pushed back on that. I fall somewhere in the middle of the fans and the haters. When the movies are good they are really good. When they are bad, they are a let down. Then you have some that are just somewhere in the middle: a fun ride, but nothing I need to see again or buy on blu-ray. In 2015′s Ant-Man, Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang tries to get back to a normal life after getting out of prison and finds himself getting mixed up with a shrinking technology. The first 10-15 minutes of that felt like it was aspiring to so much more than a MCU movie: a guy trying to move on with his life but society won’t let him since he’s an ex-con. Then it just became another super hero movie. It had some fun parts, but it could’ve been so much more, even with a screenplay co-written by Rudd, Edgar Wright and Adam McKay. In 2016′s Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man gets recruited by Capt. America and became an Avenger. In 2018′s Ant-Man and the Wasp, it was fun to see the shrinking / growing fights in San Francisco, but again it felt like there was a better movie waiting to get out. Ant-Man re-joined the Avengers in 2019′s Avengers: Endgame. Now the third Lang movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opens this week.

In this one Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and her scientist father Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) now have mother/wife Janet (Michelle Pfieffer) back from the Quantum Realm...even if she is reluctant to talk about this world she was in for 30 years. Lang’s daughter Cassie (now much older and played by Kathryn Newton) is working on a signal to the Quantum Realm, but it thrusts them all into this world, where they get separated. Janet is the most familiar with this world, but even she is fearful of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), who makes a deal with Ant-Man...and things go awry.

I actually like this better than the first two Ant-Man movies mainly because of Kang the Conqueror, one of the best Marvel villains we’ve had in a while, and the relationship Lang now has with his grown daughter Cassie. The idea of shrinking is nothing new, we’ve seen it in Fantastic Voyage, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, and Innerspace just to name a few, but with this one instead of reminding me of Marvel movies, it reminded me more of classic Star Trek episodes and sci-fi movies of the 50s and 60s. Returning director Peyton Reed has mixed it up with movies like Bring It On and episodes of The Mandalorian, but what first got my attention about him was the behind-the-scenes special on Back to the Future trilogy that aired on TV in 1990 and then he directed the live-action segments on the BTTF animated series. If he never directs anything else, he has my thumbs up for his contribution to the BTTF universe! But what lifts the sail of all the Ant-Man movies is Paul Rudd. He has a charm and a charisma that has served him well in romances and comedies (notably David Wain and Judd Apatow comedies), but here he’s the protective father on a grand scale. Did I mention I really dug the reference to Welcome Back Kotter too?
