Skylanders Review: Trigger Happy

Oh yes, my first fave. Let's talk about one of the many "subspecies" of Skylanders: The Gremlins. You see, since a major part of the Skylanders are the collectible figures, they would obviously need a way to make manufacturing them easier. So, while each figure is obviously unique in how it's detailed, they will often use a specific body type as templates for multiple figures. Similarly to how Neopets and their alternate forms work. Spyro shares the "Dragon Template" with several other characters, which we'll see soon, but for now we have the "Gremlin Template".

[Image: Trigger Happy is a short Gremlin with a Firey orange and sandy tan color scheme. His body is covered in uniformly orange fur, with the inside of his ears and the entire front of his body/the area acting as his face being tan. He has small stumpy feet and muppety three fingered hands with forearms thicker than the rest of his limbs. He has yellow eyes with black irises, almost always crooked, alongside fur around & in-between his eyes that's orange - making a pattern resembling a domino mask. He is almost always smiling with his comically large tongue hanging out, with teeth that are almost human-like with sharp canines. He wields two large pistols designed to fire gold coins, and in this specific image, he's straddling a golden cartoon missile Dr. Strangelove style.]

With Trigger Happy you'll be able to get what the body type is all about. A neckless and round being, more like the head itself is its entire body, supported by four limbs. There's not many of them, but each one is so unique it really does highlight how you can stretch one body type in so many ways.

Trigger Happy is a mysterious little guy, being the token "crazy loose cannon" as his name would suggest. He simply showed up one day, explicitly role playing as a western hero type, and protected frontier towns from bandits with custom-made guns that used coins as ammo. He's a Tech Skylander, as being an engineering savant is basically second nature to all fictional Gremlins, and he can even bring out a Coin Gatling gun as a special move.

He has a high pitch, kinda grating, voice; but in early Skylanders trailers he has an accent that sounded like an incomprehensible mix of Spaniard and Frenchman - almost like he's a Team Fortress 2 character.

In fact, doesn't that game have its own...

Anyway, I love these reviews because it really does highlight why I love my favorites. Trigger has a simple design, but making one of your playable characters marketed towards children a gremlin packing heat is just instantly hilarious. And it's only today, as I'm writing this, that I realize that the pattern of fur on his face is meant to resemble a domino mask. That really ties together his "Goldslinger aesthetic," though I still think he needed a ten-gallon hat.

Alternates: I don't know if I'll talk about all the recolors and occasional redesigns some Skylanders get, but I feel like I should tell you guys that Tigger Appy gets to wear an Evel Knievel Daredevil's costume for Superchargers, the game where the Skylanders get to Mario Kart with Bowser and Donkey Kong. Both he and the other two I reviewed by now have another-other form, but they're so weird we'll have to review those things by themselves down the road.

We'll get to Gimmicks once we get to Giants.

Trigger Happy is a fun exploration of his trope, and it's nice to know that the Skylanders team had bangers right out the gate considering he's one of the first few original Skylanders designed after the beta five.

Motto: "No Gold, No Glory." - Great Catchphrase, even if it's very obvious that it doesn't apply to him specifically. His lore outright states that the townsfolk that he saves get rich from the amount of gold coins his battles leave behind. I think that concept applies to the NPCs of Mario and Sonic games too, considering those two mascots become ATM machines whenever they walk into anything with a sharp corner.

The same thing happens to babies by the way. 4/5.

They surprisingly turned out to be decent parents.

One of the more hilarious "guy whos only seen blank" moments was when I saw a review for one of my favourite book series from high-school.

The book in question was a high fantasy story involving dwarves, elves, dragons etc. and was centered plotwise on dethroning an evil king.

And there was a onestar review because it was so obviously a 1-1 rip off... of Star Wars.

Citing that a badguys "glowing sword" was red, and that theres an old guy mentor.

After season one of Riverdale there is no coherent theme. In later seasons, little coherent characterization. Insane things happen with these characters for no reason. There is a season with a dungeons and dragons cult that runs the town. There is another cult that is like christopagan and the leader dies dressed like evel kinevel, strapped to a rocket. There is a secret word that turns a main character evil because she has "the serial killer gene". It is "tangerine" repeated thrice. Also, the epic highs and lows of high school football. There is a drug called jinglejangle. One major character is recast and later on, the original version of him tries to kill him via spacetime shenanigans. In the penultimate season the characters gain super powers with 0 leadup. They fight Satan and also a meteor. In the most recent season, they're factory reset and also now high schoolers in the 50s. One character is a bee witch... in a previous season, not the one they get in powers in. A character who died in season 1 keeps showing up for like 4 seasons... As a mummified corpse. No one ever talks or acts like a real human being. There is at one point a grpup of killers who wear plastic masks of the characters OG comic counterparts. Harvard is evil. Tldr It turns into glorious work of absurdity. The best actors on the show absolutely chew the fuck out of the scenery. I unfortunately love it

That show sounds absurd, none of these plot elements sound like they match each other, I love it! My favourite is probably either the jinglejangle or the serial killer gene just based off of your description of them. 😂 I am convinced there should be a genre just for shows that do absolutely whatever with each of their seasons where we should expect no coherency or logic, just vibes. ✨ One day your fave is a time travelling soldier, the next a highschool student, the next maybe a masked superhero! Who knows 😃

The 12th and final prisoner of MILGRAM, a very quiet girl kept here for her own alleged murder. At first extremely skittish and frequently upset about her circumstances, she’s come to enjoy the routine comfort of the prison.

The idea of being deemed guilty distresses her greatly, though she’s found solace in her new friends. Regardless, she’s hesitant to talk much about her life before the prison or what crime she’s being judged for, even if to plead her case.

The fraternal twin sister of Saki and younger sister to Tsukasa, Ayaka has the same illness as Saki. In contrast to her sister, it’d made her rather timid and lacking confidence. Skipped most of middle school due to illness and now attends school part-time at Kamiyama’s night class, 1-D.

Once her big brother got a job at Phoenix Wonderland, Ayaka wanted to know everything about it as an avid theme park lover. After expressing interest, she was introduced to the cast of the Wonderstage, and they quickly recruited her to help their small team. She’s very nervous at the prospect of performing on stage, but eagerly assists backstage with props, costuming, scripting, set design, choreography, lyrics, and so on.

She met Kanade during her time at the hospital, and Ena as an upperclassman at school. After befriending both and hearing them mention a music group they were apart of, Ayaka asked and ended up as an illustrator, writer, and singer for 25-ji, Nightcord de.

I love how bey gimmicks can represent their users so well

Victory Valkyrie’s Variable (that’s some alliteration) driver had an awakening gimmick, much like how Valt had potential all along but had to harness it

Venom/Erase Diabolos had the Bullet driver, which basically shot out an ally that wore down the opponent before Diabolos finished it. Delta was the Bullet that helped Diabolos

Regalia/Big Bang Genesis used both the Infinite Lock System and an electric driver. The Infinite Lock debuted with Prime Apocalypse, and the first electric driver was on Imperial Dragon. Gwyn is imitating both Drum and Arthur, because he’s interested in both

Judgement Joker is the perfect bey for someone like Joe. Joe doesn’t want to just win. He wants to win, knowing he can very well lose. Joker’s most used (and probably Joe’s favorite) special move has a 50/50 chance of backfiring horribly

Orb Egis’s Quest driver is easily one of the weirdest and most experimental gimmicks in Burst. But it fits Evel, a bey scientist who deals with experimental beys that no one else can make

Lucifer’s gimmick is its barrier (rubber on Variant and free-spinning on the End). Lain is a character so consumed by his flare that the “real” him can only be saved by breaking through a nigh-indestructible barrier (I put “real” in quotes because the mechanics of flare are super vague)

Hyuga looks up to Hikaru, and wants to be like him but also not completely identical, which is why Hyperion and Helios are so similar in some ways and different in others (chip design is basically the same but mirrored. Spin direction is opposite. Contact points are very different. Drivers both feature free-spinning parts and later metal plates. Both have Limit Break evolutions)

Blast Jinnius has power when it raises its contact points, but the real damage is done when it slams down. Joshua’s battle against Free had him be winning when he spammed Cyclone Wall (going up), but lose horribly when he used Cyclone Counter (going down). Joshua’s ego also went up when he was winning but as soon as the wall came down, so did Joshua

Free comes off as lazy on the surface, despite being really hardworking. Fafnir at first doesn’t seem like it requires skill to use, since even a handspin is good enough for it, but later on we see that Fafnir has abilities that require a lot of mastery to use (like Nothing Break)

My Personal Burst Rankings

Each season, the ranking of best to worst blader seen shifts as the standards increase with time and new bladers join. This is my opinion on the ranking of the top 10 bladers for each season.

This is on overall, and not just raw power. If it were just power, Kurt would likely be in first or second for Evolution, as Raul stated that there was no bey in the world at that point that could beat Khalzar in raw strength. These lists can include the same blader with different beys. Master Dragon isn't counted as it is the combination of two separate beys.

Hyde was better than Phi, but due to Phoenix absorbing Hades' power, Hyde lost. Phi then became better by fusing Revive Phoenix and Dread Hades into one bey.

As for Rise, Dante's first win against Arthur was by sheer luck, but then Dragon fully awakened and I'd say Dante/Dragon surpassed Arthur/Apocalypse then. Arman's win was awesome but it was little more than a fluke to me. It's the same situation as with Kurt, Arthur has more raw power than Dante or Delta, but raw power alone doesn't mean one is overall better. Interestingly Arthur was never beaten properly in a one on one with the Eclipse Armour by Delta. Delta got the upper hand once but each time Arthur lost was either to Dante or to a Dante/Delta tag-team.

Also, Hikaru and Hyuga are better solo than they get credit for. Oh, and Valt somehow easily breaking Lain's barrier was an ass pull with both Valt and Lain pulling out major plot armour. The Valt/Shu battle was a load of balls too. How Valt managed to beat the one guy who handed Vex Lucius's back end to it I'll never know. Aiger, the world champion and therefore better at the time, had to work much harder to beat Lain, and he wasn't even at his best due to Achilles' different modes. Weirdly, Dragon overpowered Achilles in one battle but the strain was too much and it ended up causing itself to burst, that's why my Surge list has Dante above Aiger and Aiger above Valt.)

QuadDrive is difficult because Rashad is never really seen battling with Regnar at full tilt due to bonding/resonance as it was damaged in a battle with Belfyre. That's why Ultimate Valtryek won so well against Regnar, because it was damaged. A full circle thing from when Salvage Valtryek broke because it was damaged. So Rashad/Regnar at their best without any damage to Regnar is what is used for the appropriate list.

If you ask me, it goes like this: Dragon (Awakened) > Apocalypse (Eclipse Armour) > Apocalypse >= Dragon (Partially Awakened) > Dragon.

I should point out that Destined Belfyre is basically just the Ultimate Gear version of Divine Belfyre. All lists can contain bladers from a previous season.

First impression: Awesome! someone who can pick locks! And hes pretty!

Impression now: if you let him learn how to pick locks you are playing the game wrong (also im so in love with him)

Favourite moment: the tattoos conversation with alistair where you learn for the first time alistair is very into men and not ready to confront that feeling, while zevran is just like ill jump ur bones so fast all i need is a yes

Idea for a story: ive never written anything for dragon age but i would like to write a fic about zevran and bull being the most obnoxious dudes in the room

Favourite relationship: his friendship and very open thirsting for alistair is so sweet and so funny

Favourite Headcanon: the one where locks in antiva are so obscenely complicated and ornate and complex (think silent hill or resident evel level of ridiculous) that when he brags about picking locks he isnt lying, but fereledan doesnt have those kinds of locks they just use "simple" locks, and zev has no idea how they work

I’m starting an essay project for skzverse cause after Christmas EveL I’ve had it. There’s too much going on and until I have my own place where I can freely print and map out things on a wall like a conspiracy theorist, it’s gonna have to be contained within an essay. 

However, as I was sketching out an outline the other night for this essay, because I like my things as organized as possible (and yes apa formatting as ruined me, I hate you college), the realization has occurred to me that this will not be a single essay project. In fact, the essay I started would probably be better served as brief summary of the entirety of skzverse (and by brief, it’ll probably be over a dozen pages just for an overview), instead of trying to make it into one massive thing attempting to explain everything. 

There’s the I Am series, Cle series, God’s Menu & Thunderous, the Japanese singles, On Track series, and now a Christmas album, 50-90 music videos to go through, alternative universes, and layers upon layers of symbolism, meanings, and who knows what else all buried within this. You start putting pieces together and then bam, something doesn’t fit and the whole theory falls apart or comes to a complete stop. 

(I really need my own place with a wall so I can put those little push-pins in and string yarn between the connections)

If I really looked at it and wanted to break it up into more manageable chunks, there’s maybe 5-7 essays at a preliminary glance. 

And I get excited about it (and maybe a little overwhelmed XD).
