Sup bitches! I’m in love with a very sweet, smart, hardworking man - who also finished a 20-year prison sentence three years ago. He has a great, well-paying job in a small business, his credit is blossoming, and he is beloved my all; by all accounts a success story. But of course, there are barriers, namely finding a place to rent. I have no such barriers, but I know most places do background checks on all potential occupants. What are our options?
Legal discrimination against ex-convicts is one of the blackest stains on our country. You and your partner have our sympathy and support! He has done his time and by rights should be entitled to the full privileges of any other citizen. And yet.
Remember that we are NOT legal professionals, and so we can't offer legal advice. What I CAN tell you is that if you are the only person on the lease, you will be the only one subject to a background check. Additionally, if you submit his criminal record up-front, in a personal letter to a private landlord (rather than a giant rental corporation), they're more likely to be reasonable about your case.
For more practical advice and to understand your partner's rights, risks, and options as an ex-convict, we recommend reading "The New Jim Crow." It talks about the racial component of the criminal justice system, but the discriminatory aspects of post-prison life are broadly applicable.

"CONVICT GANG KING DIES IN GUN FIGHT," New York Daily News. August 2, 1929. Page 4. --- By HAROLD HADLEY. ---- Dominick Pensabena celebrated his twenty-ninth birthday by walking out of Sing Sing on June 21 after two and a half years of a post-graduate course on being tough. In prison assignment clothes, he returned to his old haunts along the South Brooklyn waterfront and said, "I'm king."
He struck while the iron was hot-while former leaders of the waterfront toughs were languishing in various jails or resting in graves. For a week he ruled with a hand of steel and a wicked tongue.
And then, last night, he met The Mouse, christened Sira Pesino but nineteen years ago. They were having spaghetti in a restaurant in Henry and Degraw sts., Brooklyn.
He's King, He Says. "I'm king," said Pensabena. "Remember that."
"You're nuts," said The Mouse, none too quietly.
They walked to the street. "I'm king," said Pensabena.
"It takes more'n you've got to be king," said The Mouse.
Quite a crowd had gathered. It was the king's gesture. He made it with a flourish and oaths.
The King Is Dead. The gun barked. The Mouse whipped out a six-shooter and the crowd scurried to safety. The ex-convict's rule was ended. He went down with three bullets in his body and lived only long enough to run three blocks, his empty gun still clutched in his hand. His subjects found him, dead.
The Mouse was shot through the right hip, for the king was a bad shot. In Long Island College hospital, where friends hurried The Mouse in a taxicab, the young man told his story freely to police.
The Mouse fell in front of 439 Henry st., Brooklyn. He lives at 171 Carroll st.

The back of Discworld novels: wowee terry's whipped another wacky and wild adventure for us this time! there's so many silly shenanigans and witty wordplay in this book that you're sure to have a hilarious time!
Discword novels: a cynical alcoholic navigating and overcoming the pointlessness of his job, a transparent metaphor for racism and gun violence in the police system and in general, an intelligent young girl overcoming the ideas she's been taught by her culture and the media she consumes, just an entire novel made of commentary on war and gender, using talking animals as a way to explore what defines personhood and contrasting stories vs reality, an ex-convict coming to terms with the damage he's caused and fighting monopolies that are trying to do the same thing,
#and then the ex-convict's name is Moist von Lipwig#yes i made them sound more serious than they are but the book descriptions always do the opposite so it balances out#the books i'm talking about in order: guards guards; men at arms; the wee free men; monstrous regiment; the amazing maurice; going postal#discworld#gnu terry pratchett#sam vimes#moist von lipwig#tiffany aching#monstrous regiment

ex-convict geto who stays home with the kids while you’re at work. no one wants to hire him after he’s released so he stays home and takes care of things while you’re earning, and for a guy who spent a good time in prison, he’s surprisingly gentle with his hands—they braid hair and make snacks and fold laundry and tuck the blanket under the chins of his daughters. he’s done a lot of bad things, but he’s turned over a new leaf. cause his girls need him—and you? you need him too

you open yourself up to the devil by celebrating Halloween in the same way you open yourself up to the devil by celebrating St. Paddy's or Mardi Gras.
if you play ouija or try voodoo, you open yourself up to the devil. if you dress in a slutty costume or take psychedelics in a cemetery, you open yourself up to the devil.
likewise, if you get wasted on Guinness in downtown Savannah, you open yourself up to the devil.
if you twerk half-naked for plastic beads on Bourbon Street, you open yourself up to the devil.
these kinds of bacchanalia are by no means inherent to the holidays in question, and in fact, are extremely recent perversions of traditions which go back centuries. Centuries of Christian history.
#the notion that Halloween has pagan origins is a MYTH#spread by whiny witch losers who want to carve out some piece of Western culture for their degeneracy#the ex-witches and the ex-atheists who feel personal conviction about Halloween#feel it because they participated in that degeneracy#and for that reason they as individuals probably *should* stay away from Halloween BUT#most Halloween celebrators--particularly if they're cradle Christians--have NEVER experienced that version of Halloween#I certainly never ever have. and we had massive Halloween parties with all our friends. we even party-hopped once#and it was all entirely innocent#same goes for Mardi Gras#their decadence and salacity are the stuff of TV to me.#Halloween#x#Christianity

"A THUG GETS 3 YEARS," Toronto Star. August 12, 1912. Page 6. --- John Lynch Struck Man On York Street and Took His Watch. ---- Three Years For Hold-up. --- John Lynch gained little by denying the identity of the man by the same name with a long record. He was first proven in court to be the man who stepped from a lane off York street, struck Frank Powell, and robbed him of a watch. The record submitted was a startling one, so Lynch protested.
"I'm not that man at all. You're doing me an injustice."
To make sure, the man was compared with the photograph, and the Bertillon measurements of the person in question "He's not the man," was the officer's announcement, "but he also has two convictions."
Lynch goes to the penitentiary for three years.
[AL: Lynch was32, a former convict, a laborer, born in the Toronto area. He was convict #F-445 at Kingston Penitentiary. He worked mostly in the mason workshop. He was reported in August 1914 for bad conduct, and in September 1914 for smuggling and illicit possession in the prison, and lost 30 days of good time. He was released in mid-1915.]

inspiration saturday! 💌
so i started this au inspired by the movie suck me shakespeer and im excited... so here's a moodboard and a lil snippet!
ex convict! buck and er doctor! eddie

“What do you mean you buried the money at a construction site?” It takes every cell in Buck's body not to smack Ravi right on the head.
Ravi sputters and his eyes widen comically. Buck would laugh if panic wasn't already choking him inside. “I didn't know! You told me to hide it, so I did!”
Buck raises his eyebrows and looks at the brand new hospital across the street, and then at Ravi, then at the hospital again and one more time back to his friend.
“And do you see why burying it at a fucking construction site was a bad idea?” He says between gritted teeth.
“I didn't think they were actually going to construct anything.” Ravi defends himself. “You know how it is. These guys take forever. How was I supposed to know they would be done by the time you got out?”
“You didn't even think to check?” Buck asks incredulously. He forces himself to take long, deep breaths and counts to ten in his head. It's probably not a good idea to kill Ravi right now, when Buck is just freshly out of prison.
Besides, he has a meeting with his probation officer tomorrow. Showing up with bruised, bloody knuckles to her office would probably not be the best look for him.
"Well, we've gotta figure out a way to dig it up," Buck announces after a few minutes, a plan already starting to form in his head.
“How?”
“The money is probably buried in the basement, right?” Buck asks. If he just had access to it he'd be able to dig his way to the cash. “I just have to… get there.”
They both frown and stare at the hospital, Buck sees a group of what looks like interns hurry inside. Doctors and nurses come and go and some ambulances pass by. If he could just figure out a way—
A janitor would have access to every room in the hospital, right? And Buck needs a job to meet his probation requirements anyway.
