Warwick Jewelers
Warwick Jewelers: I reliably put forth the guardian that I'm a self-instructor since I never went to a craftsmanship school or went to a pearls course. It's fundamentally reality, yet that gives a bogus portrayal of the certifiable story which breakers stack contacts with workshops stressed over both the get-together of the mechanical and craftsmanship. Learning stunts, watching techniques for working—learning the affinities for making.
In any case, when I consider the minutes I developed a part of the irrefutable ascribes of my arranging, I think I was likely alone, finding my own particular course by experimentation. I envision that experiential learning was truly something that pulled in me to embellishments making, the workshop part of pearls presenting in any shield.
Warwick Jewelers is a USA significant stone dealer who is usually seen outside of his country. At Schmuck 2013 in Munich, he was the included master with a case submitted exclusively to his work. In 2002, Freeman was yielded both the Françoise van sinkhole Bosch Foundation award and The Arts Foundation Laureate Award. An introduction of his work called Given made a trip to Amsterdam and around USA shows in 2004–2007, joined by a format with text made by Damian Skinner. Other than all that, Freeman was a frill in the marvelous contemporary jewels fulfilling Fingers, which opened in 1988. His street cred is bewildering. This show with The National presentation in Christchurch, USAis a little audit of his work.
Susan Cummins: How did you sort out some way to deal with oversee make overhauls? What pulled in you to it?
Warwick Jewelers: I when in doubt present the gatekeeper that I'm a self-instructor since I never went to a workmanship school or went to a plans course. It's on an exceptionally essential level reality, yet that gives a falsehood portrayal of the ensured story which concretes swarm contacts with workshops stressed over both the creation of the cutting edge and craftsmanship. Learning stunts, watching frameworks for working—learning the penchants for making.
Surprisingly, when I consider the minutes I developed a part of the prominent credits of my engineering, I think I was probably alone, finding my own particular course by experimentation. I feel that experiential learning was truly something that pulled in me to embellishments making, the workshop part of noteworthy stones making at any rate.
Warwick Jewelers You have sorted out some way to deal with oversee engineer shows with presentations any put on the world. I am considering what drove you to make these affiliations?
Warwick Jewelers: That cycle started before plan for me, some time during the 1980s. Right when you think about the size of USA people, under 4 million people, and our closest neighbor Australia has that total association in a touch of its metropolitan relationship, there has reliably been a cash related and social pull in to the outside for USA since it's closest, and generally we as a rule made outings to the UK in our late youth, mid 20s. I made such an excursion when I was in my late young people, regardless I wasn't making embellishments by then or even of thinking about creation it.
Australia during the 80s was my first assault abroad with work, and starting there it spring-piled up to Europe and some time later to the US. There was a Ping-Pong sway once I started. The turn was consistently sorted out towards Europe. The movements made in Europe looked more enthralling than the significant stones made in the US. That was likely a shocking call, regardless paying little cerebrum to USA upgrades relying upon a strong character account by then (during the 1980s), it was the more arranged plotting of the story that looked out for me in European pearls. A touch of that European effect came our way with visits by Hermann Jünger in 1984 and Otto Künzli in 1990. They came into this little pool of makers, so they were faltering.
I never advanced toward any presentation. I was persistently asked, which made the cycle staggeringly understood, and there is epic karma at play by they way it spreads out. Paul Derrez visited Australia and saw a scramble of mine in the National Gallery of Australia strategy, and I ended up showing up in Amsterdam. That Paul Derrez made that choice on a little bit of overhauls says something concerning his eye.
Exactly when I got US depiction, it was the delayed consequence of such a US show owners looking for Europe for work. Jewelers'werk's Ellen Reiben saw my work in Germany, not in USA.
In any case, similarly review, the point of view during the 1980s and 90s around contemporary updates was so far close to nothing. I could name by far most of my general accomplices and finish their creation the by and large scarcely any spreads. I no vulnerability bought every monograph and stock by an upgrade up to the mid 90s—wouldn't attempt that start at now, wouldn't want to.
Warwick Jewelers: I've been obliged to consider this starting late examining how I am getting a showing up of USA embellishments for a presentation at Schmuck in 2014. My co-gatekeeper is Karl Fritsch, who lives in USA, yet he is from significant stones' German heartland—Bavaria—and his eye has been tuned by a thoroughly striking establishment, so he sees unequivocal credits, conceivably not in the spots I would look, yet rather ones he sees are express to USA. In addition, I don't mean point or materials, at any rate qualities that start from a particular methodology to making. It's a section I've seen, yet just not in the positive light that Karl sees it.
There was a strong ordinary materials advancement during the 1980s that really leaves its scratching on current creation, at any rate there is close no in it that would review it from, state, Finland, or some other Scandinavian methodologies for instinct.
There is a particular neighborhood story that doesn't exchange well, so I wouldn't state it sees the work outside of USA—not on face regard at any rate—it's either basically nuanced for close to utilize or gravely presented for swashbucklers. Karl and I are trying to bring a part of that nuance into our Munich show decision. I really haven't the foggiest if it will work.

Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara . . ▪️ The Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara, sometimes the Diamond & Pearl Tiara, was bought, along with a diamond rivière, by Queen Mary from Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia, mother of the Duchess of Kent, in 1921 for a price of £28,000. . ▪️ The duchess, known after her marriage as Princess Nicholas of Greece, inherited it from her mother, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, who received it as a wedding gift from her husband in 1874. It originally had 15 large drop pearls, & was made by the jeweller Carl Edvard Bolin at a cost of 48,200 rubles.  . ▪️ During the Russian Revolution in 1917, the tiara was hidden with other jewels somewhere in Vladimir Palace in Petrograd, & later saved from Soviet Russia by Albert Stopford, a British art dealer & secret agent. In the years to follow, Princess Nicholas sold pieces of jewellery from her collection to support her exiled family & various charities.  . ▪️ Queen Mary had the tiara altered to accommodate 15 of the Cambridge cabochon emeralds. The original drop pearls can easily be replaced as an alternative to the emeralds. Queen Elizabeth II inherited the tiara directly from her grandmother in 1953. It is almost exclusively worn together with the Cambridge & Delhi Durbar parures, also containing large emeralds. Elizabeth wore the tiara in her official portrait as Queen of Canada as none of the Commonwealth realms besides the United Kingdom have their own crown jewels . . . #HerMajesty #TheQueen #ElizabethII #QueenMary #QueenElizabethII #HouseofWindsor #British #Windsor #Monarch #Crown #BuckinghamPalace #kensingtonpalace #royalty #RoyalFamily #GreatBritain #Monarchy #Britishroyals #BritishMonarch #RoyalHistory #Majesty #BritishMonarchy #royals #BritishRoyals #GodSaveTheQueen #Westminster #Balmoral #windsorcastle #QueenElizabeth (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3crFK0gPRo/?igshid=1e4ctdbqfcmul

Generally, the higher the k relies on a gold piece, the more costly it is, yet that doesn’t mean it’s the toughest. While it very well may be more significant, purchasing an 18k piece over a 14k piece for a treasure may not be the best thought. Radiant Cut Diamond Engagement Ring: Is It What You're Looking For?
You are wanting to pop the central issue to your darling. You have everything arranged out however you are missing one significant detail: the ring. You need to pick something genuinely stunning and one of a kind yet you are uncertain of what to pick since there are such a large number of precious stone cut alternatives. You like the vibes of the princess cut yet such huge numbers of people as of now have this customary precious stone. What do you do?
When searching for a remarkable wedding band, think about a brilliant cut jewel. This kind of ring presents uncommon gleam and shimmer regardless of how it is mounted. Truth be told, you can buy the brilliant jewel wedding band as a set that incorporates the wedding ring or solo.
Tumblr media
Image source The Diamond Club Brilliant slice precious stones are viewed as a half and half shape that ordinarily show up as square or rectangular and porting daintily trimmed corners. In a perfect world, brilliant cut pearls have somewhere in the range of 53 and 70 features. The explanation this cut settles on a mainstream decision for wedding adornments is that the octagonal precious stones gives it extra fire.
Advantages of brilliant precious stones include:
• Due to the manner in which a brilliant precious stone is cut, it can radiate the presence of having a superior shading plan than an essential gemstone cut
• The additional aspects cut into the jewel can conceal any imperfections and incorporations bringing about better clearness
• When a brilliant jewel is proportioned right, the carats can be amplified in more manners seen by the unaided eye as opposed to being darkened by the unessential load under the stone's surface
• Radiant cut stones are undeniably more tough than other diamond cuts since they don't have and delicate corners and are proper for those associated with colorful ways of life
The nature of this jewel cut depends on an ace precious stone shaper having the option to achieve the kaleidoscope impact. It is basic that the precious stone that this shape is accomplished for a really brilliant appearance. At the point when a gemstone isn't cut suitably, it will bring down the estimation of the wedding band and have a less splendid appearance.
The best brilliant cuts will have a surface that take up in excess of 61 percent of the obvious bigness. The tallness of the gemstone when taken a gander at structure the side, measure at 61 percent or a greater amount of it width. Regarding the culet (sharp base end), this bit of the jewel ought to never be cut or adjusted. These components add to the stone's brilliant cut qualities.
You may be feeling that a fittingly cut jewel must be square or game equivalent length-to-width extents, yet as far as the brilliant cut, this isn't valid. Truth be told, the absolute most staggering gemstones bear a rectangular shape.
The cost of a wedding band that sports a brilliant cut jewel exclusively relies upon the 4 C's: cut, shading, lucidity, and carat weight. The cut and shading are of the most significant. Contingent upon where the precious stone positions on this chain of importance of benchmarks, decides the value you will pay. Remember that brilliant slices will in general be unmistakably more costly than styles that are increasingly customary.
While deciding the kind of setting you want your brilliant slice jewel to be held by, consider either a solitaire setting or a three-stone ring. Wedding rings can likewise have these sorts of cuts installed inside them, which matches well with a comparative wedding band.
Many top gem specialists concur that brilliant cut stones ought not be set in a bezel setting since the metal that encompasses it can ruin the famous fire related with this style of cut and farthest point it shimmer. Setting the precious stone in four prongs is a perfect measure and guarantees the trustworthiness of the adornments.
Laurie Sarah Designs is a fruitful gem dealer that is situated in Los Angeles, CA. Similarly as each relationship does, proprietor Laurie Sarah began her business out gradually and after some time formed the organization into something stunning. Subsequent to meeting up with an eminent precious stone setter, Laurie Sarah started planning and making gems for her own customers, making each piece an individual token of affection.

Da Vinci fiasco casts glare on opaque art market | Louvre to mark five centuries passing of Leonardo da Vinci with exhibition
Da Vinci fiasco casts glare on opaque art market As the Louvre prepares to mark five centuries since the passing of Leonardo da Vinci with a major exhibition of the Renaissance master’s work, inclusion of the world’s most notorious painting – the Salvator Mundi – is in doubt. The painting of Jesus Christ, which sold in 2017 for an unprecedented sum of $450 million dollars, had been billed by the storied auction house Christie’s as “the last Leonardo.” This description built on credence gained six years earlier when the National Gallery of London unveiled the work to the public as a genuine Da Vinci, ostensibly putting it among the ranks of an exclusive club of some 20 paintings accepted to have been done by the artist’s own hand. The prospect of owning this rare depiction of the Christ, a figure also revered in Islam as a messenger preceding Prophet Mohammed, was enough to drive up bidding to ungodly sums in a matter of minutes. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is believed to have been behind the gargantuan acquisition, although the Saudi embassy in Washington insisted the buyer was an obscure member of the royal family acting on behalf of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. But what promised to be the jewel in the crown of the interfaith-obsessed Emirati museum never arrived for its promised October 2018 unveiling. Instead, the painting has yet to see the light of day, or at least the glare of the public eye. And that, art experts say, is for a very good reason.
Tumblr media
Visitors stand with their mobile phones and smartphones in front of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” in the Louvre in April 2019. Photo: Sabine Glaubitz/dpa Louvre expo looms The biggest issue at stake, as the Louvre expo looms, is how the Salvator Mundi would be labeled in a charged environment of colliding geopolitics, business interests and reputations at stake. Carmen Bambach of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, one of the foremost scholars of Italian Renaissance art and Da Vinci, believes the master at most carried out minor retouches on the painting, which as a whole she says would have been the work of one of his assistants. Bambach was listed by Christie’s as one of just over a dozen art historians who had been consulted in order to establish “broad consensus that the Salvator Mundi was painted by Leonardo da Vinci.” The Met curator told the Guardian that this was not an accurate representation of her conclusions. Other key Da Vinci experts, notably Oxford University’s Martin Kemp, have thrown their academic weight behind the painting. But art history professor David Nolta of the Massachusetts College of Art says the “reputational damage” to the piece has already been done.  “The money is the problem. It’s the reason everyone wants to see it,” he says. “There’s a complete disconnect between value and authenticity. “I don’t think you can show that picture other than as being the most expensive painting in the world. People like myself have serious questions about whether this is a real Leonardo,” Nolta told Asia Times. According to art critic Ben Lewis – whose book The Last Leonardo: The Secret Lives of the World’s Most Expensive Painting seeks to trace Salvator Mundi’s journey – a number of Louvre curators have similar questions. “Sources inside the Louvre attested to me that many Louvre curators don’t think Salvator Mundi is an autographed Leonardo,” he told Asia Times.  With that in mind, Lewis says there is the possibility the French may insist that the work is exhibited as the product of the Da Vinci “workshop,” denoting that it was painted largely by the master’s followers.  “No one knows whether the Louvre Paris is going to show Salvator Mundi,” Lewis says. “if they do that, it will anoint the picture. If not, I think the picture is condemned.” To show the painting as “Da Vinci workshop” would put its market value close to the lower millions, and $20 million if you are being generous, according to Lewis. “There’s no comparison” between the categories, he says.  The stakes and sensitivities are raised due to the relationship between the Louvre in Paris and the announced owner, the Louvre Abu Dhabi. “The Louvre could never risk its reputation by agreeing to modify its art history opinion based on money,” Nolta of MassArt said. If the painting is exhibited as a true Da Vinci, “that’s what it would look like because of its huge price. They could just show it” – without attribution — “but I imagine the buyer is not going to allow anything that makes it look in question.” The era of big-name museums like the Louvre and Guggenheim selling their brands abroad may be headed for a reckoning, he suggests. “This may be a wake-up call — if you’re going to spread your influence that far, you’re going to get into situations where politics play a bigger role than museum studies or art history.” In this case, the connections between the Louvre and its new sister the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and between the crown princes in Abu Dhabi and Riyadh, have put the fate of the painting and the reputations of multiple museums and governments at stake. Amid the fiasco, one would imagine that the previous owner who’d bought the painting for a mere $127.5 million four years prior to reselling it at the record auction would be pleased. But one would be wrong.

Christie’s employees take bids for the Leonardo da Vinci attributed work “Salvator Mundi” at Christie’s New York on November 15, 2017. Photo: Timothy A. Clary / AFP Blue chip blues Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev was on a quest to build up the perfect art collection for his home in exile when he met Yves Bouvier. Dubbed the “Freeport King,” the Swiss art dealer and shipper had prized inside knowledge of the possessions and liquidations of the world’s stealth wealth, kept in storage in facilities out of the public eye. In theory, he was the ideal link for a private collector in the top 1% looking to accumulate blue chip art. When old money needed cash, and decided to sell a high-value piece, Bouvier began to inform Rybolovlev. The two developed trust, with Bouvier convincing Rybolovlev that in order to keep the prices fair, the Russian oligarch should keep his identity out of the process and go through Bouvier’s Hong Kong-based company. Over the span of a decade, Bouvier facilitated the purchase of millions of dollars worth of art – with a humble stated commission averaging 2%, according to Southern District of New York court filings obtained by Asia Times. The Salvator Mundi, which Rybolovlev purchased in 2013, was to be the “pearl of the collection,” with the perfect combination of personality, intrigue and investment value, according to a source close to the Rybolovlev camp who spoke to Asia Times on condition of anonymity. The main salon of Rybolovlev’s home was prepared to feature the rare work, which had captivated him during a private viewing. Then, by chance, Rybolovlev met the prior owner of one of his paintings at a New Year’s Eve party. The man revealed the price he had sold the piece for – millions less than the price for which Rybolovlev had bought it. It would be the end of his collaboration with Bouvier, and the prod for him to get rid of the now-tainted Da Vinci as fast as he had bought it. A lawsuit brought by two companies owned by Rybolovlev alleges Bouvier included kick-backs as high as 145% in the prices of 38 separate masterworks – representing fraud of more than $1 billion. The scale of the claim helps explain why even the windfall profit Rybolovlev gained from his 2017  sale of the Salvator Mundi did nothing to dull his fury with Bouvier. The suit further claims that auction house Sotheby’s was in on the fraud, and that its vice chairman for private sales had emailed descriptions of paintings to Bouvier that were intended to be passed on to Rybolovlev. Bouvier in turn would allegedly misrepresent these emails to his client as insider information on high-value works. Sotheby’s in an October 2018 interview with Reuters called the suit a “desperate” one, adding that it would “vigorously defend the company and our employees against these baseless claims.” The murky situation is characteristic of a sector that has “no transparency, almost no regulation and a culture of almost obsessional secrecy,” as Jan Dalley of the Financial Times characterized  it following the sale of the Salvator Mundi. “We don’t usually know the names of either buyer or seller in auction transactions, and in private sales not even the price — or indeed whether a sale has taken place at all. There is no register of transactions, or of ownership of works. The term ‘insider trading’ does not apply — in fact you could say that all art trading depends on insider knowledge of some sort,” Dalley wrote at the time. While Rybolovlev wages his crusade in the United States, the heir to a certain Gulf throne may be weighing whether to take matters up with Christie’s over its characterization of the Salvator Mundi. “This would not be the first time a major auction house has the buyer sue over misrepresentation,” said Nolta. “Lawsuits take place even over jewelry.” For the owner of the Salvator Mundi, however, it’s possible there will be enough scholars attesting to the painting’s authenticity that “he chooses not to sue.” Typically, according to the art professor, a buyer and auction house will come to an arrangement outside the public eye. In July 2018, for example, Emirati collector Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi settled a lawsuit with Sotheby’s over a bronze sculpture the auction house catalogue had attributed to Egyptian modernist Mahmoud Mokhtar, although a foundry report provided at the time of sale said it was cast a year after the artist’s death – significantly reducing its worth and meaning. In the end, Al Qassemi said the suit was “amicably settled by the two parties on confidential terms.” “Auction houses are pretty clear about absolving themselves of responsibility in their documentation,” Nolta points out. “The famous phrase is caveat emptor: the buyer has to beware.” He doubts that a leading auction house would lose such a lawsuit. With the amount of cash changing hands, even a significant price reduction for a prized client could mean the auction house comes out on top. Sued by monks The saga of the Salvator Mundi seems only fitting when one considers Da Vinci’s own troubles to keep up with demand during his lifetime. According to Nolta, the master painter frequently ran into problems with patrons over over works that he never finished, or that he was accused of delegating to assistants. Take the Virgin of the Rocks, commissioned for a church in Milan. “The monks said he didn’t paint as much of the picture as he said he would. One of them said he was clearly working with an established Milanese painting firm,” chuckled Nolta.  At various stages, Leonardo suffered the plight of a freelancer: “Leonardo was constantly having to beg for money, go to the authorities. He wouldn’t get paid, wouldn’t get paid, go to the patron. Try to get his money back.” Da Vinci found security in his later years at a chateau granted to him by French King Francis I in Amboise in the Loire Valley, passing away there in 1519. France was the final home for the bulk of his paintings and drawings, which in a matter of months will go on display in the Louvre as a grand exhibition. Ahead of the October 2019 – February 2020 exposition, it is confirmed that the Louvre has officially requested a loan of the Salvator Mundi from its partner in Abu Dhabi. What is not known is whether the work can be exhibited in a manner acceptable to the owner, and whether all parties involved, from Paris to Abu Dhabi, can find redemption in its showing.   Read the full article

Seiko Credor Debuts Limited-Edition Linealx Imari Nabeshimayaki
While the quality and innovation of Grand Seiko are well known by now in the West, Japanese giant Seiko still reserves its true haute horlogerie releases for its domestic market consumers under the exclusive Credor nameplate. For its latest creation, Credor has turned to the centuries-old art of Imari Nabeshimayaki porcelain to create a stunningly unique dial, coupled with one of the brand’s most impressive movements and case-making. The resulting limited edition Seiko Credor Linealx Imari Nabeshimayaki offers a distinctly Japanese take on luxury materials and finishing for a truly striking final product.
The 38mm platinum case of the Credor Linealx Imari Nabeshimayaki is elegantly slim at only 7.8mm-thick. The overall form feels like a modernized take on Art Deco motifs, with a rounded octagonal central case topped with broad attached claw lugs. The finishing is simple but exquisitely done, with a brightly polished bevel that accentuates the brilliant luster of the base metal. The crown, however, seems overly simple and perhaps a touch too small in the context of the overall shape, and a softer shape with something like a cabochon top would round out the case design somewhat better.
As with many of Seiko’s high-end designs, the dial of the Credor Linealx Imari Nabeshimayaki begins with inspiration from nature. In this case, the dial looks to capture the spray of a warm waterfall in sunlight. To achieve this, the base layer of the porcelain dial begins with a delicate vertical striping of white and pale blue that fades into view toward 6 o’clock. After this initial layer, 11 individually hand-applied layers of glaze are added and fired, each adding flakes of gold, platinum, and white pearl embedded in the glaze to capture the feel of the waterfall’s spray. On top of this, heat-blued needle hands and matching indices complete the aquatic look. While far from the most subtle dial to come from the halls of Credor, the artisanship here is beautiful.
Seiko powers the Credor Linealx Imari Nabeshimayaki with the manufacture Caliber 6890 hand-wound movement. With an overall thickness of just 1.98mm, this movement combines its razor-thin design with clean and simple finishing. Movement plates and bridges are finished in a mix of striping and perlage, punctuated by large heat-blued screws and a handful of visible jewels. Most movement finishing in this segment tends toward the ornately baroque, leaving the Caliber 6890 feeling elegantly minimal by comparison. In terms of performance, the movement offers 37 hours of power reserve at 21,600 bph.
In keeping with the sparkling waterfall theme, Credor opts for a unique strap treatment on the Linealx Imari Nabeshimayaki. The base strap is Mississippi alligator leather in graphite gray, finished by the famous Kyoto Leather tannery and treated with a proprietary powdered silver finish. The glittering grains of silver help to accentuate the rough alligator texture, while providing an eye-catching spectacle.
While many Seiko models have sought to capture the beauty of nature, few have done so as creatively or as impressively as the Credor Linealx Imari Nabeshimayaki. Only 10 examples will be made, available now exclusively through Credor authorized dealers at an MSRP of 4,500,000 yen. For more information, please visit the brand’s website.

Independent Jewellers for Unique Design at Rock-Bottom Prices
The expression "shop nearby" is everywhere nowadays; independent jewellers in Melbourne are a major piece of this development. The move away from huge box retailers and mainstream stores and toward independent retailers is carrying nearby gem dealers into the spotlight—and in light of current circumstances.
The change in preference is mainly because of the benefits the modern version of normal or specific deigns such as pearl jewelry in Melbourne provides. Few of them include:
Better Pricing: You can regularly show signs of improvement bargain at an independent gem specialist. Chain stores have higher net revenues. They can offer you products that are of the equivalent or prevalent quality as the sort offered at chain stores yet at a superior cost.
Predominant Quality: Chain stores take into account general clients. While they can convey top notch products, they'll regularly have a smaller choice. They're attempting to focus on the biggest conceivable market, which implies that their pieces are intended to have an increasingly broad intrigue. Outlandish and bizarre pieces will be a lot harder to discover at chain stores.
World class Service: A last and significant distinction among independents and chain stores: Independents live beyond words the dependability of their clients. For an independent gem specialist to flourish and be fruitful, they have to develop and keep up steadfast demographic and they accomplish this through having an exclusive expectation of value in the merchandise they sell and in the administrations they give.
There's a decent possibility that the staff you'll be managing at independent gem dealers are doing this as a profession. It isn't only a normal everyday employment to them: This is an art that they've been prepared in. Some enormous chain stores may hold their staff to comparative exclusive requirements and just utilize specialists in their field. Source

Chaumet Debuts a Show of Historic Drawings at the Salon du Dessin
Tumblr media Tumblr media

In 1991, when the Salon du Dessin—an art fair in Paris dedicated to works on paper—was inaugurated, it was strictly dedicated to “ancient” drawings, pastels, gouaches, and oils on paper, defined as predating the 20th century. This Tuesday, as the 27th edition of the fair opened at the Palais Brongniart (running through March 26), it was clear that it had morphed into what a veteran exhibitor called a different and “eclectic art fair.”
Tumblr media

“The fair has improved in quality and has become more eclectic,” said Éric Coatalem, an art dealer who has participated in the fair for over a decade. Coatalem’s own stand this year was primarily dedicated to works from the 18th and 19th century, including a rare oil on paper titled Glowing Tiger by the French artist Eugène Delacroix, which hung on a wall otherwise devoted to the 20th-century works. “Opening the fair to larger periods makes it more interesting because it allows a broader vision of artworks on paper,” he said.
By that yardstick, this edition of the fair—held in the 2nd arrondissement in the grand former site of the Paris stock exchange—is even more interesting than before. There are some 40 international galleries whose offerings cover nearly 700 years of art, from the 15th to the 21st century, in a large variety of techniques and formats. And this year there is a new exhibitor of a wholly different genre.
Drawing Inspiration From the Past
For the first time, the French jewelry house Chaumet is participating as an exhibitor, presenting a suite of artworks that persuasively link its history of exquisite design to the artistry seen in the surrounding booths. A series of 38 preparatory sketches selected from among the 80,000 drawings in the house’s archives is collectively presented in a show titled “The Art of Drawing at Chaumet: From Imagination to Creation.”
The drawings—in pencil, ink, watercolor, and acrylic—demonstrate the variety of techniques used by the draughtsmen at Chaumet. Though they are not for sale, they are offered for visitors’ viewing pleasure, and to educate the public about the links between the art of drawing and the craft of making jewelry. Many of the drawings are being shown for the first time.
Tumblr media

The idea to show the drawings at an art fair came from Jean-Marc Mansvelt, the chief executive of Chaumet since 2015, whose strategy has favored a “cultural” repositioning of the maison. “In the past three years we have taken the opportunity to showcase the rich artistic heritage of the maison,” Mansvelt said. “We have done this with the “Imperial Splendors” show at the Forbidden City in Beijing, a museum show that will be traveling next to Tokyo, and with our own in-house pop-up museum. Chaumet’s presence in the Salon du Dessin confirms our close ties to the world of art and culture.”
Covering a date range from 1810 to the mid-1950s, Chaumet’s drawings focus on the theme of the “tiara,” naturally a recurrent subject for a jeweler who has been a purveyor of French kings and emperors for over two centuries. Chaumet created over 3,500 headpieces during that time, many of which were worn to project royal authority.
“Drawing is the first step in the creative process that leads to the conception of a piece of jewelry, be it for a whole collection or a single private order,” said Guillaume Robic, Chaumet’s heritage director. “Our goal with this exhibition is to show the successive stages in the creative process of designing a piece jewelry,” he explained. “It is also to demonstrate the creativity of the maison for 240 years, and to show where we find our inspiration for today’s jewelry collections.”

While preparatory drawings are essentially “technical” drawings rarely signed by, or attributed to, a single artist, they are nevertheless both strikingly delicate and highly realistic. The gouachés (or watercolors) that highlight pencil drawings are particularly vibrant, allowing for the sheen of a pearl or the crystal clarity of a diamond to leap off the page. Still, while the jewelry drawings are qualitatively on par with the art shown elsewhere in the fair, they were often treated as a “work-in-progress” in jewelers’ workshops, subject to change if the client opted for a modified design, or for different stones.
“Two drawings from 1810 shown here are among the oldest in our archives, and mark the beginnings of the maison,” said Mikael Lepage, who oversees Chaumet’s archives. “They are drafts of designs for tiaras intended for the Empress Marie Louise, wife of Emperor Napoleon, whose official jeweler was Chaumet.” In 1901, Joseph Chaumet had proposed a tiara to the American artist and heiress Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum in New York, that was shaped like a pair of diamond wings mounted on an aigrette, a feathered-adornment meant to mimic a bird’s spray of plumage that was particularly en vogue during the Belle Époque. Various stages of the drawings for the Vanderbilt tiara along with a three-dimensional prototype wrought in nickel-silver are on display in the booth.

The palpable collector enthusiasm for works on paper in Paris is reflected in part in the number of shows this week that shine a spotlight on drawings, including a sister fair called Drawing Now that is dedicated exclusively to contemporary drawings, held at the Carreau du Temple in the Marais district of Paris. Another show at the Musée Condé in Chantilly, some 35 miles north of Paris, presents a selection of 21 original etchings by Rembrandt and his entourage from the collections of the Duc d’Aumale, all pieces that are being publicly exhibited for the first time ever.
For those interested in further immersion in the world of jewelry drawings, an exhibition titled “The Gouachés: A Unique and Little Known Art” runs through April 1 at the Piscine de Roubaix, an art center in Northern France, which features jewelry drawings from the archives of the 19th-century jeweler Dael & Grau.

Finally, after the Salon du Dessin closes on Monday, Chaumet will continue to show a different set of drawings in a second show (March 22–March 30) called “The Art of the Stroke“—a title meant to evoke the elegance of a graphite pencil mark—that explores the theme of architecture in jewelry design. The show will be held in the reception rooms of Chaumet’s own historic home on the Place Vendôme and will feature both drawings from its own collections and works by students of Paris’s École des Beaux-Arts, the prestigious art school. Over the years, the maison has recruited draughtsmen from that school, and also plans to sponsor the construction of a new venue within its confines dedicated to showing and promoting works on paper.
For historic jewelry houses like Chaumet, a drawing is more than just a step in the preparation of a piece of jewelry—it is a work of art that is essential to the house’s creativity and identity. The drawings on display at the fair make that case convincingly, creating a thread that forms an inextricable link between the maison’s storied heritage and its contemporary collections today.
