𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘚𝘬𝘪𝘯 𝘗𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳? A skin picking disorder is a condition that causes a person to pick at their skin for various reasons.
In light of #BFRBAwarenessWeek, only one of these five conditions is considered to be a #BFRB; excoriation disorder (aka compulsive skin picking).
Each diagnosis is important to consider because they require different treatments to settle the pervasiveness of the condition at hand.

Here are my last 4 days! Today I will admit that I picked a few spots. A lot fewer spots than I typically did and not as severely and intently as I used to do, but I still picked (and I'm pretty sure the redness on my face showed up in today's pics :-\). And you know what? That's ok! Progress is never a straight line, and relapses happen. I could choose to be super upset and see this step back as failure, or I can recognize that this relapse is part of my healing process and an opportunity for me to learn new ways to help myself. I choose to continue to celebrate the massive success I've had over the past 17 days rather than let this small setback discourage me to the point of ending my journey 🙌 #dermatillomania #dermatilomania #compulsiveskinpicking #skinpicking #excoriationdisorder #recovery #mentalhealth #PickingMe https://www.instagram.com/p/B8DN3iAJRju/?igshid=1m5jphbyq2277

I've been biting my nails, cuticles and picking my scalp for over 20 years. I also pick off any scabs I may feel on my body (which take a longer time to heal). #skinpicking #scalppicking #dermatillomania #excoriationdisorder #trichotillomania #ocd #compulsiveskinpicking https://www.instagram.com/p/Bod_Gbane0r/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=eqslu9c6268p

I have an excoriation disorder, in other words I have an uncontrollable urge (even when I sleep) to pick at my fingers so there are very few pictures of my hands or fingers. Even though I'm a knitter I try to hide my fingers all the time, but with almost constantly knitting and wearing my rings it tends to help. It's a work in process, and I'm working at being healthier and over coming this neurological tick of mine. #hands #yarnlovechallengeapril #yarnlovechallenge #knittersofinstagram #jewelry #excoriationdisorder #dermatillomania #rings #knittingistherapy (at Yarns Untangled)

No photoshop here! (I just used so much aerosol makeup to hide the scars on my legs yesterday, that it looked like I murdered an Oompa Loompa in my mom’s bathroom. Shout out to all my recovering skin pickers out there!)

Daily posts are overwhelming but I'm still doing daily selfies! ^_^ I notice that I still tend to look and feel for spots to pick out of habit but I've been able to catch myself and stop myself before I pick things for the majority of the time and I'm super proud of myself 😄 I had paper taped over our bathroom mirror for years to try and minimize opportunities to see spots and be triggered to pick, and now I feel confident enough with urge surfing that the papers are off!! :-D I think it's time to celebrate 🎉🎊🤩 #dermatillomania #dermatilomania #compulsiveskinpicking #skinpicking #excoriationdisorder #recovery #mentalhealth #PickingMe https://www.instagram.com/p/B8DMuvUJkGy/?igshid=14zeu6l4lp07l

Please check out and share this great collaboration I had with Seen Stories highlighting that recovery from skin picking is possible!!! 💜 Some footage from this reel is from the Scars of Shame documentary, which is now free to watch online! I'd love to know your thoughts!

Greetings!
Hi, to all who visit this page!
I have started this new blogging journey with the intention of raising awareness of a little known disorder and a few others that interlink with this one, Excoriation Disorder.
I have suffered with this disorder for around 14 years, I am 29 years old. I am trying to find the reasons for why I do what I do. I want to learn my triggers and I want to be able to share my experiences and emotions with you all, throughout this journey.
It took me a long time to find out that this thing I did/do had a name. I found it by googling 'skin picking'. I felt somewhat relieved to find that what I was suffering with was a real thing, with a name!
But, wait a minute! What is this disorder? What makes me do it? Why can't I stop? Can I recover? This disorder poses so many questions.
It took me until I was 28 years old to be brave enough to mention it when I was at a Doctor's appointment. Even then I didn't show the doctor my skin because I felt embarrassed and ashamed of something I had inflicted upon myself.
I will continue my story soon.. There is so much to talk about.

Day 8! This is hard! I don't even know how to begin describing how difficult it is to leave my skin alone after over two decades of doing the opposite. I have been rubbing at the spots that bother me a fair bit but I keep making the decision not to pick them 👍 It's so uncharacteristic of me to have whiteheads left unpopped on my body for more than a few min after I notice them, let alone for practically a week 😅 but I'm doing it!!! :-D If you ever have any questions don't hesitate to ask! I'm making these posts from Instagram so if you have a question and you're seeing these posts on a different app/site, your best bet to get ahold of me will be to PM me on that app/site :-) Thank you all for your support!!! 😍 #dermatillomania #dermatilomania #compulsiveskinpicking #skinpicking #excoriationdisorder #recovery #mentalhealth https://www.instagram.com/p/B7r_L8xpUSd/?igshid=edkhihz1new6
