Last night we went for our first hypnobirthing session with @hampshirebirthing - if it’s something you’re thinking of, I cannot recommend it enough. If you’ve not heard of it, I beg you to look into it. . I have heard some people dismiss it as woo, or hypnotism. It is neither. It is a system of reclaiming the birth narrative, demystifying and emphasising all the positive parts of the process of bringing an amazing new life into the world. It gives us more positive words and tools to use in the lead up to, and during, the event of birth, removing the stigma and negativity that exists around the most amazing miracle of life. . One of the most concerning parts for me, as a father, was the idea of not understanding my role in the birth. I knew I was @eb_matthews ‘s advocate and chief cheerleader, but I wasn’t sure exactly how that would actually manifest. We had our final session of #hypnobirthing from @hampshirebirthing last night - the four week course has been absolutely amazing, and deeply enlightening! Following the coverage of hypnobirthing that started when #katemiddleton #duchessofcambridge mentioned her #hypnobirth experience, I’ve been fascinated by how many people view it! . I will be the first to admit that the name suggests something other than it is. My favourite moment was when I told a pregnant friend of mine we were doing hypnobirthing - her response was “sounds a bit weird - I’m doing a course where we talk about positive birth stories, positive affirmations, do relaxations and some stroking and touch responses to help me keep calm when I’m giving birth - apparently it helps increase oxytocin, which makes birth easier...” In that one description she almost perfectly encapsulated hypnobirthing, she just had assumed it was something else entirely... . It has given us both a far greater knowledge of the process of labour and birth, what questions to ask, what to expect. They were completely open and fair minded about every type of birth, and the aids and interventions that can be used, and definitely did not push for a “natural birth” but rather showed us what paths we might like to take, if everything goes to plan. We both left feeling far calmer about what’s ahead, and excited for the whole process... . The closure of this #birthcenter is devastating to the #nyc community at large. NYC, one of the least progressive places in the country to give birth, has so few options for #lowintervention #birth already. We hope that the hospital will instead consider becoming a leader in the birth field and instead expand the birth center, truly utilize it and make it accessible to all parents, including those parents on public insurance who are clinic patients. We recognize that private rooms will be more profitable and that systemic problems with #healthcare influence these decisions, but we urge you to reconsider and to ensure that we all have options when it comes to #birth. . . What can you do? . 1. Tag a doula, a reporter or blogger you know, anyone who may soon become a parent in New York, or someone who birthed at the birth center. . 2. Call the patient reps at the hospital at 212-523-7225 and tell them why you think the birth center should remain open. Father's Day at the Eastern Market. I didn't get to see my own kids till dinner time (except for Zoe, thanks mom!) but it was cool seeing all of the dads and kids out enjoying the day. This dad was so proud of his son who will be born in about a month. I know, he's not technically a dad yet but I think it counts. The world's getting another rad dad, that's what it's about.
