Pursuit of Survival
If engineers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, architectures, etc etc, were paid as much as public teachers, would people still pursue what they're going after?
That is the difference between intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation.
I know for some, they would say yes, but for some, not so much.
So does our society really push people to pursue what they want? Or what they have to do in order to survive?
My cousin wanted to be a pharmacist, but she discovered she's only doing it for the money, not because she loves chemistry and biology/anatomy/etc.
Capitalism promotes not "pursuit of happiness" as in the Declaration of Independence, it promotes do what you must in order to gain a lot of money or gain security. It promotes "Social Darwinism" which should be a concept that should not have existed. It promoted Imperialism and it can be used to justify Hitler's Holocaust. The weak get eradicated, while the strong live on. That was something Darwin observed in animals, but I don't think humans should be placed in the same category or "survival of the fittest," even if we are animals.
So, I wonder, would things be different if schools promoted difference in interest and exposed us to diverse areas of learning and the world so we would pursue what we wanted instead of preparing us to fight for our lives in competition against other people?
