Only 2 short shippy prompts all month! All 4 modern girls got a couple spotlights, various family cameos and backstories, a future prompt as is tradition, Zaine had a few posts, a few NPC-only scenes, a LOT of Endwalker, and even Ancient Icarus got a story, tying into 2021's "Destruct" prompt and how/why the siblings' souls have been connected through time and reincarnations.
A few of these are alternate takes on scenes I've touched on before, but it's interesting what a new prompt at a different time can get one to say, how we change as writers in what we focus on and how we say it.
This comes in roughly 300 words shorter than last year, at 18,493. The week of the 18-22 I had off work for my birthday, and that had the most 1k+ prompts, with a word count nearly double the other 3 full weeks. While the longer prompts are good, I'm really happy with how so many of the short ones turned out!
I was again trying to be realistic about my time, energy, not pushing free write days...and also working on an original writing project on the side, so I actually did do more writing over the month, just not FFXIV related!
(Also why some of my responses were in just under the wire...)
But this was a good break and exercise from that other writing, and let me try a few new things.
And comparing to earlier years--especially 2017 and 2018 when I was getting back onto the writing horse and feeling out my OCs--I feel like my growth as a writer, especially to be more succinct yet still evocative when needed, is evident. I've gotten a lot of practice in over time, and this challenge is one of the things that helped me get to where I can write an original story on top of my fanfic!
Breakdowns for funsies: Longest: 21 Grave; 1,652 words Shortest: 14 Clear; 106 words
Between 100-500 words: 1 Envoy; 2 Bark; 4 Off the Hook; 5 Barbarous; 7 Noisome; 8 Shed; 14 Clear; 15 Portentous; 26 Last; 27 Sole. Between 500-1000 words: 6 Ring; 11 Once Bitten, Twice Shy; 13 Check; 16 Jerk; 18 Fish Out of Water; 22 Fulsome; 23 Suit; 25 Call it a Day; 28 Blunt; 29 Contravention; 30 Amity. 1000+ words: 9 Fair; 12 Dowdy; 19 Weal; 20 Hamper; 21 Grave.
I didn't look at the totals until the end; I only checked some of the shorter ones during the challenge to see if they hit my personal "500+ words" cut off for adding a Read More to the posts.
"Grave" honestly could have been a lot shorter; I started the plot too early, and much as I like Zaine making one last visit to his childhood Nana, for the purposes of the challenge, I could have just focused on going to the lichyard to save myself time and energy, and wrote about the visit on my own another time. On the other hand, it's done now!
Not sure which is a favorite; there's a lot I like.
As usual, these will be revised at...some point (some more than others, probably) and added to Ao3, in my various series and threads.

FFXIV Write 2023: Master Post & Round Up!
Tumblr media
Seven years of FFXIV Write in the bag! Whether this is your first year or your seventh, whether you wrote seven words or seven thousand, GOOD JOB, EVERYONE! And a thank you, as always, to @sea-wolf-coast-to-coast for continuing to host and provide prompts for us year after year.
As with last year, I will not be checking my word count or any other sort of stats; I ended up focusing on that in past years to my detriment, and the point of this challenge is to have fun! It's enough for me that I wrote every day. :D
BUT! October is here--and that it means it's time for my own personal challenge: FFXIV Edit! The heart of FFXIV Write is just to write, regardless of mistakes or roughness, but I do like to go back and revisit my ideas and see if my brain wants to put some more polish on my entries. So, throughout October, I will continue my tradition of posting each of my prompts to AO3 once a day and take the time to give them an edit or expansion or rewrite as I see fit.
Happy FFXIV Write, everyone! And now: THE MASTER POST!

i wave my wand & command u to speak on hopeless, a fic that has lived in my bookmarks for time immemorial.
ohhhhh thank youuu!!!  hopeless was my first wolgraha fic!  It was based on 10 kiss prompts that I decided to make loosely related and kind of flesh out a story for my WoL.  I was just going along cheerfully enjoying FFXIV until Shadowbringers but idk man several things about that part of the story just have my number on speed dial you know!  I was like okay I’m gonna have to write for this to get the rocks out of my brain, ergo I’m gonna have to actually develop an OC.
I pretty much made Adrienne specifically to ship her w/ G’raha so I find it extremely funny a. how quickly I became attached to her for her own sake and b. how I feel her chemistry w/ other characters developed since she was initially conceptualized to complement G’raha specifically LOL.  I previously had a hard time “bonding” with my own OCs and I feel this really marked a turning point in that regard where I was able to focus in on character ideas that really appealed to me enough to form that connection, if that makes sense.
There’s also like a huge gap in my AO3 works from March 2020 until January 2021 when I started writing for FFXIV.  I remember I kept wanting to say something about what I was going through at the time and how I was feeling about my writing and about writing generally, but anything I tried to say barely made any sense because I think I didn’t even know what was going on with me.  There was a period of time where I felt like maybe I just wouldn’t write anymore because I didn’t have it in me.  Nothing inspired me, and nothing I had been working on pre-pandemic even remotely appealed to me anymore.  I felt like it had been written by someone else.
In retrospect, it makes perfect sense, right?  But it was hard to understand the feeling from the middle of it.  And I didn’t want to be cold or disrespectful to the people who have loved my work over the years, but I also couldn’t find a good way of venting my frustration about how I was feeling, so I think I often ended up coming off that way despite my best intentions.
So my main goal in doing the kiss prompts was to not angst about them too much, to just get them done without much editing, and to write something fairly different from what I usually wrote in the past.  I felt like it would be a good challenge for me because as I mentioned I really love unresolved tension and agonizing slow burn, but I think maybe I love it too much LOL, so sometimes when it finally came time for the culmination of the tension I would freeze up because I had built it up so much that I was afraid the payoff wouldn’t be good enough!  Ten shortish prompts where they literally had to kiss felt like a perfect low-stress challenge to help shake my brain loose on this very specific issue, and for that reason I think it’s very sweet and pleasant to read where a lot of my other work is more fraught and angsty LOL.
I really don’t even know if this dialogue feels particularly in character, I was straight up just calling myself out for a laugh:
A dull terror is beginning to take root in her heart, the one that has borne the loss of countless others, the one that has already lost him twice over, and she searches her mind frantically for something to say, something that will keep her from spoiling the moment with things she can’t do anything about. “Is that your idea of a proper courtship?” she wonders, instead, trying at a teasing tone. G’raha looks up.  “Is it not to your liking?” he counters.  “If you’d prefer, I could go and sit across the room.” “You’ll do no such thing!”  Adrienne tightens her grip on him instinctively. G’raha’s grin widens, and his tone turns dramatic.  “Perhaps in a few months, our hands will brush, and I’ll write you a sad letter about it.” “I hate you so much.”  Adrienne laughs weakly, but she cannot bring herself to loosen her grip on him, lest he slip away from her yet again in her negligence. “I don’t think that’s true,” says G’raha pleasantly.
It’s funny, now that my life is like pretty normal and okay again, I’m back to mostly liking fraught and angsty things, but at the time I feel my personal life was so bad that I really needed sweet and pleasant in my escapism!

FFxivWrite2021 Recap
Tumblr media
This post is extremely overdue! I apologize! Last year was a particularly busy one for me. While y’all were exercising your creativity with the prompts each day, I was preparing for the birth of my first kiddo - a little guy who came 3 weeks early and before I had a chance to recap the challenge. Once he was here, I disappeared into first-time-parent newborn life for awhile. And now, I’m back! Thank you all for your patience and understanding as I navigated (and continue to navigate) a major life change.
Now, without further ado, let’s recap!
10,390 total entries were submitted in 2021!
This includes all entries that were submitted via the Google Form, including late entries (and excluding duplicate entries).
Which brings us to 31,556 total recorded entries since we began this challenge in 2017!
And, we had 80 volunteer artists in 2020!! Which means that there were 80 prize-winners!
A breakdown of the stats + announcement of the Participation Prize winners are below the cut ~
Want to see all public entries? Here’s a link to the Master Spreadsheet. This omits entries that people requested to keep private between them and I.
Total Participation Year to Year:

NOTE: The big dips are Make up / Extra Credit Days. Lots of folks choose to take a break over writing Extra Credit. Legit!

NOTE: Day 7 was the day before the 24-hour deadline went into effect. Hence, the big ol’ spike.

Participation Prize Winners
Winners were selected via a random raffle dice roll made by each of the artists and span all online writing platforms, including Tumblr, Ao3, Google Docs, and others (like Twitter). This writing challenge is not a contest - no one’s work was being judged for length, skill, etc. The prizes are based on participation only!
Prizes are a simple black & white portrait of the winner’s character. Most are shoulder up but the artists are free to take liberties if they’d like. Prizes are not commissioned work, so ultimately it’s the artist’s choice for what they’d like to do for the piece. Some artists (not all) accept commissions and might be open to colorizing a prize piece, after it’s been posted, at their normal rates.
All of 2021′s winners have been contacted, and most prizes have been completed. As always, there are a few whose artists needed to drop out for personal reasons, and that’s ok! In those cases, the winners will be carried over into 2022′s pool of winners where another artist will pick up their prize and complete it. That being said, if you were a 2021 winner and you haven’t seen a completed prize yet, please feel free to reach out to me!

Year 5 Favorites for FFXIV Write
I finally dipped my toes into FFXIV Write in 2019, meaning this is the fifth time I've participated, holy shit. I like to mark some favorites at the end of each challenge, so I figured this year would be a good chance to go back and revisit some of the ones that have stuck with me. The 2023 ones are still pretty fresh, so I chose my favorites-among-favorites for this year.

Blowing the dust off
According to Tumblr, my last post was September 2018 and that was a reblog of a My Immortal comic.
I figured seeing as I’m doing fandom type things again (and have been for about a year now) I should start using social media  for it.
Final Fantasy XIV is my newest love. I write fanfic (mostly one-shots) and even do the occasional GPose and I will now make sure to post it here as well!
If you’re interested in reading here are the links to my fics. As I mentioned, they’re one-shots, but they’re separated by ship and the first chapter is a table of contents for each one-shot within. (Links all lead to Ao3.)
It’s All Ancient History: I am a shameless Ot3 shipper for Azem/Emet-Selch/Hythlodaeus and this fic collection reflects that.
Event Horizon: WoL & Aymeric ship. I love Aymeric and I decided that my WoL does as well. Fair warning: Estinien is considered only a friend in this; I’m not an Estimeric shipper (nothing wrong with that ship, of course, I just personally don’t ship it).
Super Original Title: FFXIV-Writes 2021 30 Day Writing Challenge: Prompt challenge that mostly focused on Ren (my WoL) and Aymeric.
Super Original Title 2: Electric Boogaloo (FFXIV-Writes 2022 30 Day Writing Challenge): Prompt challenge where I explored a vague rewrite of my WoL as if he were literally Azem thrust into modern day Eorzea and how the MSQ events would have affected him. As much as I liked this idea, I’m sticking with Ren as my canon WoL. And now that I’ve pimped my links, I will leave you with a couple of my favorite pictures I’ve GPosed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(As i said, I’m a shameless Ancient Ot3 shipper!)
That’s it from me. For now!

#MiqoMarch 2022 Day 4: Pet
Tumblr media
“Of course, if he hadn’t been spending so much time closeted with his pet…”
The venomous words, no matter how quietly hissed, brought the meeting of the House to a standstill. Artoirel, lulled into nearly a stupor by the endless circuitous arguments, sat bolt upright in his seat. It was not the first time there had been whispers about the relationship between the Lord Speaker and the Warrior of Light — those had started circulating almost immediately after the Warrior’s arrival in Ishgard. But it was the first time someone had been so careless as to speak them within the walls of the council chamber. Everyone halted, then turned to Aymeric, to see how he would react.
Aymeric’s face might have been carved of stone. He stared at the offender in silence, long enough that the man in question, Lord Preaumane, turned steadily more red in the face, though to his credit, he did not look away.
“You will not speak of the Warrior in such terms again,” Aymeric said at last, his voice as frigid and implacable as an oncoming avalanche. Unlike Preaumane, he made no other outward sign.
Preaumane sneered. “Or what, my lord? Will you challenge me to a duel?”
There was a rustle of interest. Ever since the Republic of Ishgard had abolished the Inquisition, and by extension official Trial by Combat, it had become the fashion to settle disputes among the nobility by engaging in duels instead. Aymeric had been trying to nip the emerging tradition in the bud, without success.
Surprisingly, a faint smile played about his features. “One of the dubious benefits of being branded a bastard all one’s life: I care not a whit for mine own honour. However, my Lord Preaumane, ‘twas not I to whom you gave insult.”
He inclined his head, and the Warrior herself appeared at the rail of the gallery.
“That would be me,” she said, into the sudden pall.

FFXIV Write Entry #1
Prompt: cross || Master Post || On AO3
550 words, hurt/comfort cw for depictions of torture, threats of violence, derogatory language
Tumblr media
Aymeric awakens bound to the cross.
His bare back stings, exposed to the air, in anticipation of the lash. It is not the first time.
He wonders how much longer his captors will drag this out. If it will ever be possible for their malice and fury to be spent. He has already made it clear that he will tell them naught — much as he might wish it to be due to his own fortitude, it has rather more to do with the fact that they already know all he might have to tell.
What a farce. The whole of Ishgard knows exactly in whom he would have confided. And he dares not hope that the Ward remain ignorant of the Azure Dragoon and the Warrior of Light’s activities in Dravania. This is merely revenge, payback for slights real and imagined.
And his father had given him over to them without a second thought.
Aymeric drifted. Even at his most wildly optimistic he’d assumed he would be taken into custody at best, outright slain at the worst.
He had not expected the torture.
“Do you imagine you may yet save your friends?” Charibert’s voice resonated until his ears fairly throbbed with it, a strength and pitch the real Charibert’s voice had never achieved. “Your silence avails them not, cur. It is only a matter of time before they all share your fate.”
Aymeric clung to the lifeline that Charibert spoke of the future. They had not yet been captured. Some small, besieged part of his mind was screaming at him.
Wake up, you fool! It’s just a dream! He tried in vain to heed it, Charibert’s next words rushing in his ears.
“Perhaps we’ll let you watch, when we get our hands on that cat bitch of yours. I look forward to making her yowl.”
“You will not touch her—!” His voice was raw from screaming and disuse. He struggled a little more, quite uselessly. Charibert laughed, and the pain began again.
WAKE UP!
Aymeric’s eyes snapped open to darkness and quiet. Nothing about the room was unfamiliar. The soothing sound of the fountain burbling away in the corner permeated his hearing, while moonlight filtered softly through the stained glass window. He knew this room, had slept here many a night. No pain or suffering could touch him here.
His throat was as dry as the Thanalan desert, his heart pounding as though he’d just run a malm. No matter how frequently the dreams came, they never got any easier.
A soft touch on his arm shook him out of the memories, and he looked down into Eyn’ara’s lambent eyes, which held naught but love and understanding. She knew. She always knew.
After another moment to allow him to regain his bearings, she pulled him into her arms.
“They will never hurt you again,” she murmured fiercely. Aymeric suspected that the words were as much for her benefit as his own.
Sometimes even her beloved presence was not enough to banish the shadows that hounded him. The marks on his skin and the marks that went deeper. Tonight, thankfully, was not one of those nights. He lay in her arms, in her bed, in her room, and breathed deep of the peace they had fought so hard to achieve.

So based on this post that was going around a while back, I’m trying my hand at Dreamling fic. And I’ve gotten to the point where changes are happening! \o/
Dream had thought that since the walk to the castle he'd become inured to the sight of his home crumbling around him, but the shattered remnants of his throne room — the heart of his power, the memory of his last sight of the Dreaming for a hundred years — open a wound deep within him such that he nearly stumbles.
Suddenly, it is too much to bear.
He is the Dreaming, and the Dreaming is him. If he cannot do even this, put this one small bit to rights, what right has he to the title?
He knows immediately that it is a mistake, drawing deep from wells within himself that contain mere drops. The resulting mess is somehow worse than before. Though it is a sign of his unworthiness that so many of his subjects have abandoned him, it is a mercy that only Lucienne witnesses his fall.
"You need rest, my Lord," she insists. "And then food, and maybe a bit more rest."
"No." Dream shakes her off, dragging himself to a sitting position even as he trembles like a newborn lamb. He does not have the luxury of rest: he is the Dreaming, and the Dreaming is fading. "Is there anything of my creation that yet remains in the Dreaming?"
Galling, that he should have to ask another, but he has not yet reattuned himself to the shifting rhythms of his realm. Lucienne straightens her spine, and he looks curiously upon her change in demeanour.
"I will tell you, my Lord," she says, gentle but firm, "once you rest. You, of all people, should know the importance of taking time to recuperate, and yet you will not accept what you freely give to all."
Dream stares at her in open astonishment.
"You are here, now," she continues ruthlessly, "the damage will grow no worse. But, with respect, Sire, you will be able to do more for the Dreaming once you approach it from a place of strength." She meets his eyes and does not back down.
For an instant, embers of the old pride surge up. I am no invalid and you dare and other such admonitions rising to his lips before evaporating like the morning dew. He is that weak; his palace proclaims his sorry state, and what little power he’d retained after his captivity had gone towards taking revenge on his captors. He cannot regret it, but…
“Perhaps there is some truth in what you say,” he admits. The safety of the Dreaming is paramount, and that has always resided in his person. He refuses to allow his hubris to damage it further.

My #1 post of 2022
It struck me on a rewatch that when Dream tells Death "I had a true quest, a purpose outside my function" it's perhaps the most animated we've seen him yet in the show.
Dream is a lover of stories, and music, and art, because what else are dreams? And finally, for the first time, he got to be IN a story, instead of just watching or shepherding. Even his choice of word, "quest", reflects this. A great tale, with heroes and villains and adventure... and then it's over. No wonder he feels empty. It's the same way I feel when I put down a good book.

Writer's Game: First Sentences
Rules: post the first sentence of your last ten fics. If you haven't written ten fics, share as many first-sentences as you have.
Tagged by @traveleorzea
Tagging: I stayed up too late last night and I'm not caffeinated enough to put up with the anxiety of plucking out mutuals I think might be interested, if you see this and want to share plz act like I tagged you here.
10: In The Storm's Wake (FFXIV, WoL/G'raha) - self-indulgent shippy fluff at the end of SHB
After everything he’d been through, it was no surprise that G’raha was struggling to get around by the time they all ascended from the Tempest; Thancred had had to carry him up the steps to the Eulmoran airship that would bear them back to the Crystarium.
9: A Chorus Ringing (FFXIV, multiple) - collection of one-shots from FFXIVWrite 2022
“Emet-Selch,” I began, then shook my head. “…Hades…”
8: with false compare (FFXIV, WoL/Urianger) - someone else's WoL for a gift exchange
"Urianger! Are you home?"
7: With Time to Bloom (FFXIV, Thancred/Urianger) - chapter fic set on the First in the SHB timeskip
"One of the things I have sought in my studies is a remedy for thine injuries, a way to heal what will not mend itself through natural means."
6: Fate/Endless Null (Fate/Zero, The Sandman, no explicit ships) - character study relating Servants to The Endless
The page turns…
5: Vignette Folio (FFXIV, multiple) - collection of one-shots from FFXIVWrite 2021
The problem was Minfilia, and that was a problem that couldn't be solved.
4: A Falcon Among Peacocks (FFXIV, Artoirel/Thancred) - rarepair challenge fic, explicit
"A grand melee?"
3: to rise and sink again (FFXIV, Thancred/Urianger) - one-shot hurt/comfort set between 5.0 and 5.3
It happened within moments.
2: Unwound (FFXIV, Thancred/Urianger) - one-shot PWP, just an excuse to write Thancred getting loved on
Thancred was starting to lose track of time.
1: Reprieve (FFXIV, Urianger/Moenbryda) - one-shot PWP, dialogue-free character study through a thousand words of sex scene, and it starts fast so here's where the break goes
Urianger loved the taste of her, the softness of her delicate skin against his lips and tongue, the low sigh of anticipation and delight as she spread her legs further and ran fingers through his hair.
on the plus side, I've written more fics than I realized. I've been inactive longer than I realized too, though.
It's a little uncomfortable to look this closely at the rhythms of how I write, to be honest - always starting with dialogue and very short sentences, most of the time the second or third sentence is what's more revealing of what the story's actually about. I wonder if that's something I should work on - is it that important for the very first sentence to be most interesting?

FFXIV Write 2021 Prompt #25: Silver Lining
Silver Lining – an advantage that comes from a difficult or unpleasant situation
The date had snuck up on him.
Dahkar rolled out of bed feeling grumpy and for the life of him, he couldn’t figure out why. He had no plans for the day, no diplomatic engagements that he would have to suffer through, no foes to deal with, no responsibilities he found boring. The day was his to do with as he pleased.
So why did the prospect of leaving his room seem so daunting, so pointless?
Something tugged at his mind, a nagging feeling that he was forgetting something. He looked over to the calendar on his wall, a simple one that Tataru insisted all of their rooms in the Rising Stones have.
Oh.
Oh.
It was the anniversary….of the day the man he loved died.
Shite.
He’d forgotten. With everything that had been going on, he’d somehow let himself forget that the worst day of his life was approaching.
He’d forgotten him.
No you haven’t
He groaned and flopped back first onto his bed. I’m really not in the mood for this, Fray.
Too bad. Whether you like it or not, I am a part of you, here when you need me. Right now, you need me.
He rubbed his temples. Can you not just let me be sad and lonely in peace?
Not if you are going to lie to yourself, no.
I’m not lying to myself. I haven’t thought about him in moons what with everything going on. I’ve forgotten him. I almost forgot the anniversary of the day he died. I claim to have loved him, and this is how I’m honoring his memory. I deserve this misery and you damn well know it
Are you done?
Oh will you just fuck off. You told me you didn’t think we’d ever talk like this again and here you are. lying to me.
I told you I didn’t know. I didn’t. I certainly didn’t think you’d tell lies to yourself thinking you needed to be miserable. As if that’s what he would want. As if ‘not thinking about someone constantly’ is the same as forgetting them. What a lode of shite, really. I thought we were smarter than this. Clearly you still need me.
Dahkar scoffed What the hells do you know about what he would have wanted?
Do you really need me to answer that? Or should I say ‘need us’?
Dahkar screamed in frustration, covering his face with his hands to muffle the sound.
Feel better?
No, but since you seem to have all of the answers, what do you suggest I do?
You’re being petulant, and you know it. My suggestions are still you knowing exactly what to do. But if hearing me say it will help you realize it, then fine. Get up, get dressed, go to his grave, leave some of those lilies, and tell him how much we love him and miss him. And then move forward. We both know he’d be quite cross with the idea of you holding yourself back from real happiness because of what happened to him. So accept it and let yourself love again already.
He sighed. For being my inner darkness, you’re weirdly romantic.
Do I need to drag us back to the Sea of Clouds so you can hear the moogle’s song again, or are you going to accept that because I remember it, you certainly do?
No, Gods no. Fine I’m going. And I’ll….think about the rest
That’s what you’ve already been doing.
Shut it.
Tumblr media
A few hours later, Dahkar knelt at Haurchefant’s grave. While he still carried Nothung on his back, he’d eschewed the dark plate armor he normally wore as a Dark Knight, instead donning the mail of a House Fortemps Knight that he’d worn the Grand Melee with the Eorzean Alliance. It felt like a fitting tribute to the man he was here to speak to, even if it was so light he almost felt naked.
“Hey, Haurche. If you’re watching,I reckon you’re probably yelling at me. I’m sorry for letting myself be miserable with sadness. I know you don’t want me to do that. You’d probably tell me something like ‘You have so much love to give, let yourself do so!’. And you’re right. So I’m gonna try my best. There’s actually this girl in the Scions, she-“
The loud CRACK of a flintlock discharging interrupted his words and his side exploded in pain. He screamed and went down.
“Well well well, boys. Look what we got here. Another bleedin’ heretic comin’ to pay respects to his heretic kin.”
The voice was young, male, angry, but strangely somewhat refined. He rolled over to look at his attackers, trying not to cry out at the pain the act caused him. A group of elezen youths, four boys and a single girl, all well dressed too. The leader held a flintlocke, still smoking, pointed at him. “What…” he coughed. “What the hells are you doing? This is no heretic’s grave!”
“Oh it isn’t? Oh, well my mistake then. I thought this was the grave of that bastard Haurchefant Greystone, who brought outsiders into Ishgard that up and utterly destroyed the very foundations our great nation was built on! Now we have another bastard as our leader who let fucking dragons into the city and let the fucking commoners have a voice equal with their betters!” the leader spat, lowering his gun. His cohorts nodded or shouted agreements,
“Ah, I see.” Dahkar spat blood onto the snow, trying to get to his knees so he could at least defend himself. The shot was well placed, though, and he was struggling to overcome the pain of it. “And what might you plan to do if it was?”
“Well first, we’re gonna gut you and spill your blood over this place. Then we’re gonna dig that bastard up, shatter whatever bones he’ s got left in there and spread em around so the beasts can have em, and whatever’s left of you. Then we’ll shatter that stone and toss it in Witchdrop where it belongs. How’s that sound to you, heretic? Don’t answer, we don’t care.”
The group all drew a series of blades, knives and daggers, and slowly advanced on him. Dahkar tried in vain to get to his feet, or at least his knees, any position where he could try to draw his sword and defend himself, but the strain was getting to be too much, and he nearly blacked out. A splitting headache overtook him as he tried to block out the noise in his mind.
Noise that he belatedly realized was a booming voice
GIVE ME CONTROL. LET ME IN, DAHKAR. I CAN END THIS, GIVE ME CONTROL
“WILL YOU SHUT UP, FRAY?” he screamed. He seized the darkness within himself and pushed it out, as if trying to excise the voice from his head.
Miraculously, it worked. The yelling stopped. He sensed a growing pool of darkness nearby. Opening his eyes, he looked over. A pool of dark aether had gathered next to him. From it rose a shadowy form of a hyur, glad in black and blue, gold-trimmed armor. On his back was a Deathbringer made of darkness. The Shadow looked to him with glowing red eyes
“Neat trick” it said in his own voice.
The youths had began to back away, screaming threats or oaths. He used that time to reach into the Armory and summoned his plate armor. With a flash of light, it appeared on him, the damaged mail gone. The cuirass clamped down on the would, reducing the blood loss.
The shadow offered him a hand, and he took it, getting back to his feet and drawing Nothung.
“Don’t kill them.” he said to it.
“Mercy? They’d have shown you none.”
“They’re angry and stupid. Everyone should get one chance to move beyond that”
The shadow, Fray, laughed. Or Dahkar did. It was impossible to tell, and in the end it didn’t matter.
Both lept at the elezen youths, who screamed in terror.

LynMars’s FFXIV Write 2022 Master Post
Writings completed for this year’s daily challenge. As usual any of my ship-related content is marked with an asterisk (*) to seek or avoid as needed.
The goal this year was to write less than I have in previous years; to allow myself shorter scenes and not push myself on free days. To actually relax, have fun, and not stress about writing “enough”. To make my prose just as long as it needed to be.
Overall, I succeeded in said goals.
Breakdowns and commentary under the cut for those interested!
1. Cross - Two travelers’ journey over time & adventuring together. 2. Bolt - Iyna doing her duty as a rebel versus the Empire. 3. Temper - Midgardsormr keeps a promise to forge a hero. 4. Free Day! 5. Cutting Corners - Dark Autumn after a company officer meeting. 6. Onerous - Thancred & the Immortal Flames, post-Ifrit. 7. Pawn - Emelia obtains passage for her family to Thavnair. 8. Tepid - Zaine realizing he doesn’t belong with the Radiant Host. 9. Yawn - Aeryn escaping the Bloody Banquet through the tunnel. 10. Channel - C’oretta’s thought processes. 11. Free Day! 12. Miss the Boat - Urianger, Moenbryda, and regrets. 13. Confluence - Venat tracing the flow of fate. 14. Attrition - Ser Ompagne has a brief theological discussion. 15. Row - Dark versus a certain baby behemoth. 16. Deiform - Dark, Aeryn, Iyna, & C’oretta in Delubrum Reginae. 17. Novel* - Aeryn, Thancred, & a borrowed book over time. 18. Free Day - Memory* - Aeryn & Thancred discuss his possession. 19. Turn a Blind Eye - Lahabrea contemplates his mistakes. 20. Anon - Ryne learning two opposing definitions of the word. 21. Solution - 2 Azems discuss the plans for the Final Days. 22. Veracity - In a possible future, Iyna ensures history’s truth. 23. Pitch* - Thancred knows how to distract Aeryn when necessary. 24. Vicissitudes - Ascian viewpoints on their stolen mortal bodies. 25. Free Day! 26. Break a Leg - Iyna & C’oretta help the dancers at a recital. 27. Hail - An Estinien PoV of the final fight in the Aitiascope. 28. Vainglory - The Warrior of Light isn’t what Jullus expected. 29. Fuse - Tanzel thinks of ways to handle his stepchild’s temper. 30. Sojourn - A family of travelers, in 1 lifetime & perspective.
Totals: 18,813 words.
A bit more than my 2018 (around 16k), less than my 2019 (21.4K), and way less than 2020 and 2021. I was realistic about my time and energy, asked myself what is the core idea or scene I really want to get across, and any spot-editing was for tightening wording and phrases. I feel like it got harder to keep writing shorter as the month went on and my focus slipped--and I really got into a writing groove!
I could have definitely gone on longer for some of these, and do have other scene ideas and notes in the drafts. But for the 24 hour challenge I tried to keep them short, though they’re each as long as they need to be.
I did mean to put out old WIPs again on free days, but that time/energy factor combined with busy weekends, so I took them off. "Memory" actually came out of "Yawn" and was plinked at over the week before it went up for the 18th.
Only a couple wolcred fics this year; got in a good mix of NPCs and OCs, with Iyna taking a bit more of a POV spotlight in the non-Aeryn-focused stories, though all the girls got at least one. More Ancients and Ascians than I generally go with, though still made sure some favorite Scions got in there. And a bit more of Aeryn's family and backstory, as getting Thavnair finally has put that forefront in my brain.
I was hoping something would spark an idea for an Avengret chapter I feel is "missing" but I may have to resign myself to the fact that chapter doesn't want to be written as I continue revising last year's unexpected longfic. Thankfully this year's prompts were all standalones.

June Drabble Challenge Day 23: Escape
Aislinn Bane had escaped from an abusive home when she was younger, her best friend, Begtse, at her side, and hadn’t looked back. She was now a proud Astrologian, part of a free company that she loved, with friends she cared for. And she was hopelessly in love with one Sayo Kaifu. Sayo was the brightest star in the universe, smart, funny, and made Aislinn’s heart skip a beat often. There was just one issue. “She’s never going to know how you feel if you don’t say anything.” Begtse pointed out and Aislinn sighed because her BF had a point.
Two pining drabbles in a row? Okay so the word today was Escape and I definitely didn’t focus on it. But I was going back and forth on what to write today and I realized I hadn’t written about my WOL character from FFXIV or her wife in a while. I don’t know why I don’t write drabbles of them already together inside of pining ones but my mind works in funny ways. So yeah this is mostly self-indulgent, sorry lol. This is for Day 23 from this lovely challenge list here! Thanks!

FFXIV Write 2021
Prompt #23 - All Of the Same Flame
Tumblr media
<Post Shadowbringers MSQ, possible Spoilers>
Soul - ‘the spiritual or immaterial part of a human being or animal’
————————————————————
“How many others have you met d’you think?”
Katsum tore her eyes away from the missive she was writing to look at the ghostly shimmering form of Ardbert standing at the end of the desk she sat at with his arms crossed, a rather curious and thoughtful expression on his features.
“Others?” She asked, glancing only for a second as a company of soldiers marched past on their rounds. Thank goodness Midgardsormr was sleeping nearby so it didn't appear she was speaking to herself. The last thing she’d want is for rumors to start of the Lord Commander’s sweetheart losing her senses on the war front.
Ardbert was taken aback for a moment, scratching the back of his head suddenly as he laughed sheepishly, “Said that out loud, didn’t I? Sorry. What I meant was…how many others like me have you met do you think? If any. Other parts of the same soul fragments I suppose.”
Katsum pondered this for a moment, “I was sure I had not met any before we learned the truth of it, but now that we have, I believe I have met a fair few. Some more closely than others.”
Ardbert seemed surprised at this before he seemed to realize something and shrugged, “Ah, well will your dragon companions that hail from another star entirely, and with the pixie friend, I suppose that is rather less challenging than it would be for most.”
Katsum nodded, “The Echo is to blame for a few of those meetings too. I never knew it could connect those of the same soul before it did, yet I saw into another’s life and she saw me in the same moment. And we were able to speak freely, can you believe it? Just as we are conversing now, we talked and learned about one another. It was fascinating.”
Ardbert chuckled, “Leave it to you to learn all the secrets that alluded the rest of us gifted folk.”
“Oh come now, don’t pout,” Katsum retorted, smiling warmly, “Wouldn’t have gotten here had a certain ghostly friend of mine now pushed me to keep going.”
“Aye, that’s true.” He shook his head with a laugh, glancing about them at the Alliance’s army camp, watching the soldiers of all nations running to and fro as they ensured they were ready for battle, “Kept you going to fight another day.”
The miqo’te nodded as she returned to her letter, “Indeed you did.”
“Katsum, t’would seem our sources are moving quickly,” Both Katsum and Ardbert looked up into the lavender-colored gaze of the woman who now stood at the other end of the table. Her long, platinum blood hair was pulled back in braids that decorated her head, a few strands left loose to frame her pale skinned face. She wore a thick, dark colored tunic that was accented with small dragon scales on the shoulders of the tunic. Long sleeves covered her arms and a pair of gloves protected her hands from the slight chill. She also wore a thick skirt which was just an inch longer than the tunic itself, both covering over her dark leather boots. Finally, on the right side of her breast plate of her tunic, she wore a silver brooch made up of three dragon heads.
The blonde miqo’te smiled and sat up straight, bowing her head slightly to the woman as she smiled thankfully, “Really? What have they told you?”
The woman grinned with her, “That they are closing in on a secreted base as we speak. I’ve already dispatched a few riders to lay siege to it, and they have taken wing.”
“Wonderful, and thank you. I would have done the very same.”
“I thought you might,” She nodded, “I shall be sure to let you know anything else I learn.”
Katsum bowed her head thankfully, “You have my thanks, Dany. Do let me know if there is anything I can assist with as well.”
Dany nodded and took her leave, disappearing as quickly as she’d appeared.
“Wait was…” She glanced at Ardbert, the ghost himself looking as if he had seen well…a ghost, “Was that another of…of our…”
“I hate to call it “shards”, but yes. Though Daenerys came to join us quite a bit differently than you and I did. And in truth, she still lives.”
“Does she. Ahh, I see then. So that big, black dragon, the one that doesn’t speak like the others, that’s…?”
Katsum nodded, “Yes, that's her dragon.”
“How did she come to this world? I remember you talking about the dragon on the horizon, but what’s the full story?”
Katsum gestured to the missive before her, “Give me but a few moments to finish this and I’ll be glad to tell you. ‘Tis not everyday you mean another ‘Dragon Queen’ from another world afterall.”

FFXIV Write 2021 - Initial Round Up!
Tumblr media
It’s October 1 and FFXIV Write is done! As always, a huge thank you to <SEEK> and all our friends in our server for collective cheerleading, brainstorming, and worldbuilding tangents (because ultimately we are Huge Nerds who just like to natter about this game we all play). Thank you also to everyone here on Tumblr who read my stuff, and also to @sea-wolf-coast-to-coast for hosting!
But we aren’t done yet! Or, well, I’m not. For any new followers, my policy since this challenge first began in 2017 is that October is my editing pass month; the goal of FFXIV Write is just to write, without worrying about perfection, but I like the opportunity to revisit my ideas and see how a month of stewing can change things, from the major to the minor. The original fills will remain untouched here on Tumblr, but as October progress, the cleaned up versions will be uploaded to AO3.
The uploads will done a little differently this year, as I used the free write days to work on A Bloodshore Holiday, which will be uploaded separately from the anthology fic. However, the anthology’s table of contents will include links to the longform fic, and A Bloodshore Holiday will end up finished in November before Endwalker goes live. (Hopefully.)
Please keep an eye on this post for the link to AETHERSONG going live some time today!
EDIT: Aethersong is now live!
EDIT 2: A Bloodshore Holiday is also now live!
