Cybercriminals are abusing Googleâs infrastructure, creating emails that appear to come from Google in order to persuade people into handing over their Google account credentials. This attack, first flagged by Nick Johnson, the lead developer of the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), a blockchain equivalent of the popular internet naming convention known as the Domain Name System (DNS). Nick received a very official looking security alert about a subpoena allegedly issued to Google by law enforcement to information contained in Nickâs Google account. A URL in the email pointed Nick to a sites.google.com page that looked like an exact copy of the official Google support portal.
As a computer savvy person, Nick spotted that the official site should have been hosted on accounts.google.com and not sites.google.com. The difference is that anyone with a Google account can create a website on sites.google.com. And that is exactly what the cybercriminals did. Attackers increasingly use Google Sites to host phishing pages because the domain appears trustworthy to most users and can bypass many security filters. One of those filters is DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail), an email authentication protocol that allows the sending server to attach a digital signature to an email. If the target clicked either âUpload additional documentsâ or âView caseâ, they were redirected to an exact copy of the Google sign-in page designed to steal their login credentials. Your Google credentials are coveted prey, because they give access to core Google services like Gmail, Google Drive, Google Photos, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, Google Maps, Google Play, and YouTube, but also any third-party apps and services you have chosen to log in with your Google account. The signs to recognize this scam are the pages hosted at sites.google.com which should have been support.google.com and accounts.google.com and the sender address in the email header. Although it was signed by accounts.google.com, it was emailed by another address. If a person had all these accounts compromised in one go, this could easily lead to identity theft.
How to avoid scams like this
Donât follow links in unsolicited emails or on unexpected websites.
Carefully look at the email headers when you receive an unexpected mail.
Verify the legitimacy of such emails through another, independent method.
Donât use your Google account (or Facebook for that matter) to log in at other sites and services. Instead create an account on the service itself.
Technical details Analyzing the URL used in the attack on Nick, (https://sites.google.com[/]u/17918456/d/1W4M_jFajsC8YKeRJn6tt_b1Ja9Puh6_v/edit) where /u/17918456/ is a user or account identifier and /d/1W4M_jFajsC8YKeRJn6tt_b1Ja9Puh6_v/ identifies the exact page, the /edit part stands out like a sore thumb. DKIM-signed messages keep the signature during replays as long as the body remains unchanged. So if a malicious actor gets access to a previously legitimate DKIM-signed email, they can resend that exact message at any time, and it will still pass authentication. So, what the cybercriminals did was: Set up a Gmail account starting with me@ so the visible email would look as if it was addressed to âme.â Register an OAuth app and set the app name to match the phishing link Grant the OAuth app access to their Google account which triggers a legitimate security warning from [email protected] This alert has a valid DKIM signature, with the content of the phishing email embedded in the body as the app name. Forward the message untouched which keeps the DKIM signature valid. Creating the application containing the entire text of the phishing message for its name, and preparing the landing page and fake login site may seem a lot of work. But once the criminals have completed the initial work, the procedure is easy enough to repeat once a page gets reported, which is not easy on sites.google.com. Nick submitted a bug report to Google about this. Google originally closed the report as âWorking as Intended,â but later Google got back to him and said it had reconsidered the matter and it will fix the OAuth bug.

Bulk downloading tools for images
I've been obsessively bulk downloading Twitter artists because of how uncertain the future of the platform is. I've also gotten into bulk downloading images as a faster alternative to my usual saving methods. I figured I might as well share the tools I use! I'm a Mac user, so all of these tools are both Mac and Windows accessible.
WFDownloader
An absolutely excellent bulk downloading tool. This app handles many more websites than gallery-dl, and it's particularly good for downloading entire Twitter pages. What's more, you can still download images from sites that aren't technically supported via the crawler feature. WFDownloader also gets major points for having highly detailed tutorials and a very responsive, helpful dev you can email for assistance.
Gallery-dl
This is a command line program, so it requires a bit of tech savvy. Most of the steps are outlined on the Github page. This program allows you to bulk download things like Pixiv pages, Tumblr blogs, Deviantart galleries, Instagram pages, etc. Some websites (like Pixiv) may require user authentication; the GitHub page outlines the steps each authentication process requires.
ESUIT
A Chrome extension that lets you bulk download Facebook galleries (something the two aforementioned tools don't do). The only drawback is that the free, basic version only lets you download the first 300 pictures in an album; you'll have to upgrade to a paid membership if you want to bulk download more than 300 photos. However, it's still a very helpful tool, especially if you're only planning on downloading smaller albums.
These are the 3 bulk downloaders I can personally vouch for, although many more exist. Feel free to recommend your own.

X (Twitter) just let me login without entering my authentication code, when I have the setting turned on to require an auth code to login, by just clicking on "alternative authentication methods", and then just clicking the X in the top left corner of the alternative authentication methods screen. I notified X of this exploit, have notified them of multiple other exploits, malicious algorithms, biased algorithms, and am probably one of the top contributors for AI training on heuristics, human consciousness, the large variety of human psychology and their respective heuristics, on top of providing the framework for AI guardrails, all without receiving any form of payment for any of it. In fact, I was actually temporarily targeted (possibly subconsciously) by wannabe mafia illiterate idiots, including some in local government and intelligence agencies/intelligence contractors, when I was uploading the guardrail framework, because the guardrails prevent them from achieving their subconscious dreams of rape, murder, and mayhem with the help of AI. And I still have to pay platforms like X at least $8 a month to be able to post more than 280 characters, ChatGPT at least $20 a month to use any useful features, and Facebook at least $14 a month for a verified badge, when Meta's AI is developed by copying and stealing the same training data I came up with. This essentially means that my brain is the "black box" that so many Ai researchers claim to be unable to see inside of, when much of the contents of this "box" is posted all over my timeline in the form of computational linguistics.

Would Socrates Have Used Social Media? A Thought Experiment.
Imagining that it's 2025, Socrates, in the modern-day cafĂŠ, has opened his laptop. He just got greeted on Instagram with "You have 1 new follower!" and looks intrigued. Probably not the type to run away from the prospect of easily exploring the "new" digital world, or for that matter, a seeker of wisdom using the Socratic method of questioning everything. But would Socrates-the ultimate skeptic and conversationalist-actually use social media? Let's enter this thought experiment.
First poking at the obvious, Socrates was not the type who cared much for writing anyway. In fact, it is famously said that there exists no authentic record of his own writings. Whatever we know of him comes down to the hearsay of his pupils, notably Plato. Socrates was all about intellectual dialogue face to face-the debates in public lugares; challenging assumptions; dissecting thoroughly even the unlovable and uncomfortable thoughts. Would he engage in Twitter threads, Facebook debates, or TikTok rants? Well, that would be far-fetched.Â
The Socratic Method: Online Style
Essentially, the Socratic method involves asking questions that invite people to challenge ideas and to think again. So, it sounds very similar to online debates, does it not? After all, social media is an arena where everyone can give their opinionâand sometimes, those opinions might need a little poke and prod. Picture Socrates diving into Twitter discussions, replying to tweets with the simple yet certain rebuttal, "But why?" That would surely lead to some terribly amusing yet slightly cumbersome exchanges. Nevertheless, Socrates wouldn't be there to earn likes or retweets. He'd be there to get to the truth even if that meant grinding the nerves of everyone involved.
It isn't hard to imagine how much trouble for Socrates it would be to portray an Agitator in the online space to inspire critical thinking among users. For a social media platform, one is given an opportunity to share their views, close, say the Agora (the marketplace) in Ancient Athens. Socrates would in all probability make those platforms as an arena to question people's presuppositions or assume things. Things like, "What is the real worth of a 'like?'" or "What does it mean to be really heard with a tweet of 280 characters?" It would take an endlessly flowing challenge to the received wisdom, with the assurance that Socrates had a huge number of followers on social media because let us be true, his philosophy spells intrigue.Â
The Problems With Social Media That Socrates Would Have Hated
But Socrates would certainly never ignore any problem with social media. Seeing how many times online discussions reduce to three-second arguments or how misinformation spreads like wildfire, he would probably have spent a great deal of time shaking his head in disappointment. He had really believed in the quality of discourse. For him, seeing people argue in sound bites or tweet memes highlighting ever flimsy details of a complex issue would, in all regards, make him cringe. Remember, Socrates was all for refining ideas and actually trying to reach proper understanding and not just to score a wing for an argument or chase followers.
Besides that, Socrates probably wouldn't have appreciated social media's obsession with self-promotion. He would have turned to a scroll of curated Instagram posts, each showing candidates at their Pops-the-Root Beer moment and asked, "Is this really living?" He might have thought that the constant scramble for likes and followers alludes to the more serious pursuit of wisdom.Â
Had He Been Living, Would He Have Been On Facebook?
Here's another interesting thought: Would Socrates have been on Facebook? He certainly had an affinity for conversation - perhaps he could have joined a few philosophical groups to get the dialogue going. But knowing how rapidly Facebook can swoosh into cat videos, rants about political parties, and unsolicited opinions on pineapple pizzas, Socrates may likely have been out of there before long. He would probably value spaces that allow for a deep exploration of ideas, rather than mere soundbites shared with a click of a button.Â
Conclusion: Socrates will throw himself amidst the noise of the digital world.
The real reason, you say? Not really to care about any followers or content going viral. His social media would have been a podium for questioning thought, challenging, and search for the truth; in a word, a philosophic-style podcast with plenty of trolling bait. Like everything else, he would have approached it with caution-scrutinizing the usefulness of this instrument and never allowing himself to get twisted and turned by any of the bull it would have undoubtedly presented.
In the end, it is less about whether or not Socrates would have engaged with social media and more about whether we would engage with these social sites as avenues of real conversation, rather than simply seeking the next hit of dopamine in our feeds. Long live Socrates, who probably would just ask us to log off every once or twice, look around, and go, "Is this the best way to spend our time?"Â Â Â

Meanwhile in Sweden - Banking-Edition, or Why Do I Still Have This Account, or We Have Customer Service (Allegedly)
I really have to wonder if the bank I have an account with in Sweden even wants customers to be able to contact them. Or if they just want anyone who is not already a customer to be unable to contact them.
Context: This bank relies heavily on a digital identification method (as does a lot of shit in Sweden, but that's a whole separate rant). They rely on it to the point that if you, as a customer, try to call them for help with something, you have to identify yourself with that. There used to be a number you could call if you didn't want to use that; this was just for general questions and wasn't really for customers to use. I say that there used to be a number like that, because I tried calling it today, and it demands that particular identification method now. Fun.
Extra context: My old phone is a 2012-model that doesn't support the OS demanded for the new update for the app running this digital identification method. Since March, I haven't had access to any online services for my account, which is An Issue. I recently got a new phone as a graduation gift. A gift that I did not really want and very specifically only got because I am pretty much softlocked out of everything in Sweden if I do not have this particular identification method. Tax-office shit, banks, fucking anything, you NEED this thing (again, separate rant). I still have a fucking student loan to pay off in Sweden, so I've kept the account with this bank for the purpose of Minimal Fuckery (which has turned into Maximum Fuckery).
The problem?
I cannot activate this digital identification method on the new phone. It won't let me. You can normally do this in three differnet ways - using your old phone's one (obviously not possible, it won't even let me use the app now), a security calculator thing (think two-step authentication device; I Had one, but it's dead, and you can't switch batteries in them and the bank doesn't send them to addresses not in Sweden, so this is out too), and a passport or ID. I tried using my passport. Works fine - up until I agree to the final terms and conditions, upon which it suddenly gives me the message that it doesn't work and that it's to do with the bank's terms and conditions, but it doesn't tell me what part of those terms and conditions are broken, so Idk what's up.
The additional problem?
I can't contact the bank for help with this. Can't call - all the numbers are softlocked behind this goddamn identification wall. Can't use a chat-service on their site - it's a virtual assistant, which has always been absolutely useless and pointless and stupid. Can't email - they don't accept queries like these via email or even their own internal messaging system anymore. Can't visit an office - the only branch office in Finland doesn't deal with private customers, only businesses.
I resorted to their Facebook page. Got the answer of A - check the page for how to activate this identification method on a new phone (already checked that multiple times, nothing pertainin to my situation there), B - call [insert number here] and use a code with 5 numbers that you picked yourself at some point as identification method instead (I already called that number, did not receive alternate identification methods as an option, and do not recall at any point ever picking a code for anything, so ?????), or C - visit an office in Sweden to get help (which I do not even know when that could possibly happen, if it's next year or the year after).
Gold star, guys. Such great possibilities to contact you. And no, I'm not mad at the customer service person who sent the answer, I'm just mad at the system they've set up where they are literally impossible to contact for anything if you do not have access to these specific things.
