Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung Ka-fai in Farewell China (Clara Law, 1990)
Cast: Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Hayley Man, Lester Chit-Man Chan, Hung Chun, Jun Liao. Screenplay: Eddie Ling-Ching Fong. Cinematography: Jingle Ma. Art direction: Lee Lok-Si. Film editing: Ma Kam. Music: Jim Shum.
Despite a narrative clotted with flashbacks, some scenes that don't seem to fit, and an unsteadiness of tone, Clara Law's Farewell China remains a vivid, sometimes harrowing look at Chinese immigrants in New York City. Maggie Cheung gives a dazzling performance as Li Hung, who leaves her husband, Zhao Nansan (Tony Leung Ka-fai) and their infant son in China to seek work in New York. When Nansan stops hearing from Hung, he finds his way to the city to search for her. Hayley Man gives a lively performance as a 15-year-old Chinese-American runaway from her family in Detroit, who steals and turns tricks as she aids Nansan in his search through the city's lower depths.

Jackie is a supporting character. Not the main character like the US release portrays on the cover.
Decent movie. But not the best HK action thriller.

Please feel free to use these!!
10 KuroFai Fanfictions I hope someone writes or I will have to get to them one day
All of these are for anyone to use and are ideas that have been bouncing around in my head for a while. If you do like one/use one send it to me and I will read, review, and share!!!!! I have pages and pages of these so lemme know if you want more friends!
1 ~ Fai gets separated from the group and wakes up in a new dimension all alone. He is discovered by a group of warriors. One of those warriors looks suspiciously like Kurogane but Fai can tell instantly it’s not. He of course just so happens to be able to speak the language and surrenders peacefully. He is brought back to there village where he gets to meet the real Kurogane of this world. Youou is only 5 but is obsessed with the blond hair, blue eyes wizard who “is very pretty’ or so he tells his mom and dad. Fai spends a few weeks with the little family and gets dragged around by the overly hyperactive kid we see in the lecourt flashback. I want Youou to give him frogs and bugs cuse ‘arnt they cool!’ and show him all his extra secret hiding spots. I want Youou to get stuck in a tree and Fai to have to save him and he is just so freaking impressed that Fai can use magic to do that. I want him to be glued to Fai and hold his hand and just like climb up Fai’s side like a monkey and hang over his shoulders. I need a cute scene where Fai is telling him bedtime stories that are totally over the top and silly and for Youou to just freaking eat it up. I want him to just be so freaking cute and innocent and adorable that Fai is just swooning in cuteness overload and when Kuro-chan finally finds him Youou bawls his eyes out when they have to go and when they land in the next world Fai is crying too and Kurogane ends up snuggling him and telling him all about what he was like as a kid.
2 ~ This same shit but With Kurogane. He lands in a world separated from the group and is grumbling and stalking around when he runs into two adorable kids who wont speak to him but are constantly whispering in the other twins ears and shooting each other looks. Eventually Fai and Yuui bring Kurogane back to there house where they live with there Aunt Chii. Eventually the twins come out of there shells and they are both just terrors. Fai (the real Fai) is half 50% huge cry baby and 50% If-you-make-Yuui-sad-I-will-cut-you. Yuui(the one who takes his twins name in TRC) is mischievous but appears to be overly innocent and they cause no end of trouble. They are just cuddle bugs and Kurogane will walk into the house to find that they have stolen every blanket in the house and piled them in the living room like a nest/fort and are napping all twisted around each other at odd angles. They will also crawl into his bed in the middle of the night and twist around the same way and it hurts Kurogane’s pride as a ninja that they NEVER wake him. Bonus points if you write them in Ashura-ou’s care because he is the best underappreciated and well meaning father in CLAMP. Extra bonus points if they are little vampires!!!!!! And they get cranky and cry why they are hungry and there little eyes turn gold.
3 ~ A well written KuroFai A/B/O Fic. (I know I know shoot me) because I haven't read a single one in this fandom that didnt get abandoned after a few chapters or were terribly written. (all KuroFai is Good KuroFai but I want really good Kurofai) specifically I want I Dont-need-no-man omega Fai and a potty mouth Kuro-alpha who just doesn't know what to do with him. All the angst. Just modern day au a/b/o and I’ll probs be happy tbh. I have one in the works but I feel like I would get judged for posting it? I wanted something where Fai and Kurogane are both princes in neighboring lands. Fai is a first prince and Kurogane is like way down there on the succession so when they have an arranged marriage Kuro-chan gets shipped to Fai’s country even though he is the alpha. Fai is meh about the whole thing but ends up loving that Kurogane’s alpha pride is hurt because he was shipped off ‘like a blushing bride’ to his husbands home and teases him over it. I want Fai to have to teach Kurogane alllll about his new home that is culturally very different from each other in regards to gender rolls. (Kurogane’s comes from a patriarchal society and Fai comes from a matriarchal society.) So he totally freaks out that his delicate omega is a war mage who leads armies and fights alpha’s face to face. Of course I want them to grow a mutual respect for each others strengths and fall in love love and live happily every after.
4 ~ I want a fanfiction where something happens in a battle and Fai ends up saving Kurogane’s ass by stepping in and just using magic to absolutely obliterate the threat and we get to actually see him do more then just act as back up. Kurogane is totally turned on when Fai is a bad ass in a fight and even though he is injured he just really wants to take his mage home and erm... show his affection? Hehe.
5 ~ One time I wrote a fic where Fai and Kurogane went back to Celese when Ashura woke up and there were still people there. I was told of course by the readers that there were no more living people in Celese because Ashura had killed them or Fai had taken them all to another dimension? I never read that in the manga... (I knew there were no living people in Celese I though Ashura-ou had killed them not that Fai had rescued them) I dont think at least? But that would be a Fai thing to do. I want a fic where the gang lands in the world that Fai took all the people fleeing ‘The beast’ to and since they are all strong magic users they sense his presence right away and the court mages just swarm them. Of course everyone but Fai is super confused. I like to think that Ashura-ou didnt have have his actual son So Fai is the crowned prince aka king now that Ashura-ou is dead so they dont want him to go. It could go a few ways from here.
Fai was married for political reasons but he and his wife had been childhood friends and she is just so delighted that Fai and Kurogane fell in love and she is just all up in there business about how it happened. Kurogane of course is like what-the-hell-do-you-mean-you-are-married!? and Fai has to explain the situation and apologize for not being honest.
or
(sorry I ship TaiAsh-ou and it sneaks into everything I do) Taishakuten from RG Veda was super close to Ashura-ou and so also watched Fai grow up and was so freaking worried about him going back to Celese all alone. He has been in charge while Fai was gone and of course demands Fai stay so becomes there villain with good intentions if you catch my drift? Just like in RG Veda he promised Ashura-ou but this time it was to look out for Fai and keep him safe. So we get to hear all sorts of things about Fai that are never revealed int he Manga and Kurogane gets all twisted out of joint that Fai might actually stay when really Fai cant wait to go because while he loves him home the reminders of Celese brake his heart. Of corse Kurogane doesnt get why Fai would want to abandon his people so they have to have a talk and Kuro offers for Fai to live in Nihon when this is over.
6 ~ I really really reaaaaaaaaaaaally want a fic where Ashura-ou never rescued Fai so he kinda just hung out in Valerie in that timeless prison where he cant use magic. FWR still threw his brother out of the tower and he promised to bring him back if Fai kills the people who will one day. (just swap there names so Fai is Fai and the real Fai is now Yuui for this explanation) So Fai never grows older because timeless prison, never learns how to smile or joke or be a normal human because  no Ashura-ou so he is just this tiny little starving frost bitten gremlin sitting in the snow holding his twin and waiting with the feather FWR gave him. So when the gang show up there like... WTFFFFFF. Kurogane brakes the timeless prison with an attack from his sword and Fai is just looking up at them terrified. he doesnt speak or move just looks up at them terrified. They take Fai and Yuui because Fai wont let go and find shelter for the night. Fai of course cant bring  himself to kill the only people that have ever showed him kindness so he is beating himself up for not being able to do it to save Yuui. I love KuroFai but I also think that people can have close non romantic relationships as well so I would love to see Kurogane Fall in love with Fai and care for him in a parental way? No creepiness just Kurogane seeing a kid that needs him and showing him how to be a kid and live his life. I think this would be so cool if someone has the time to actually write out the healing from a traumatized 5-7 year old into a quirky teen. lord knows when and If I get to this one (I’ve had this idea for 7 years) its gonna be 500k + words.
7 ~ I want an epic AU where Fai and Kurogane live in different countries. I want it to be a tradition in Nihon that when boys turn 16 they spend some time training alone away from there families and its no different for Kurogane. I want his dad lord suwa to have gone to Celese when he had been Kuro’s age and become best buds with Ashura-ou. like war buddies. So when he ships Kurogane off for training he is trusting his old friend Ashura-ou(king of Celes) to look after him. (Ashura would be more like from RG-Veda and a master swords men if that makes sense) Kurogane is excited as hell to go and when he gets there he meets Ashura’s son Fai/Yuui. I want fun teasing between them, epic adventures, Fai taking Kuro-chans innocence!!! and tons of steamy love. I have so many diff Ideas for how this could go but I would love one where Kurogane helps Fai deal with Ashura going crazy like he does in Tsuba. Bonus points for awesome world building.
8 ~ I want an AU where Fai travels to Kurogane’s world when he is learning the spell to travel between dimensions and just sorta thunks down in the middle of his village and hurts himself on the landing. I want Kuro’s mama to patch Fai up and for Fai and Kurogane to become quick friends before Fai’s Dad showes up to bring him home. I want Fai to visit every few Years and for them to fall in love love!!! Bonus points if Fai has to sneak off to visit Kurogane and Ashura has to keep coming to get him and drag his ass home.
9 ~ I want and AU where Kurogane’s parents go on vacation without him so he is spending the summer with his cousins (Syaoran and his dad) and gets dragged with them while they explore historical sights throughout eastern Europe. they end up in this totally dilapidated castle that was abandoned years ago and is supposedly haunted. Kurogane doesn't believe in ghosts so when he hears a banging sound from the catacombs below his room he goes to investigate. He finds the source of the banging and it appears to be coming from a bricked up passage way. Kuro starts to get totally freaked out because he swears he can here crying and someone asking for help on the other side so he locates some tools and tries to get though the wall. while he is working the banging and the crying stop and when he pulls the first brick free he uses his phone to flash some light inside of the room and almost has a heart attack when a single gold eye stares back at him. after the first brick the rest of the wall comes down easy and Kurogane Finds Fai just standing there staring at him. Fai is a vampire that the villagers had entombed 500 years ago and as soon as Kurogane gets close enough to him--Fai bites him. Can you blame him though he is starving to death? the whole immortal thing is not as cool as it sounds when your’re bricked up in a dungeon. Luckily his stomach cant hold much and Fai apoligizes while he waits for Kurogane to come to his senses. Like the rest of these they fall in love love and Kurogane gets to teach Fai all about the convinces of modern day life.
10 ~ I want a fic where Fai gets sick for the first time in a long time. Usually his magic keeps him healthy so when he gets sick he gets siiiiick. Of course he hates asking for help so que  Kurogane taking care of him.

Barrack O’ Karma
Yay to creepy and mysterious themed dramas! I have always liked such drama themes. So currently I’ve only watched till episode 4 and I have started to like it. The first two episode under the story ‘梦’ wasn’t impressive to me. It was exciting at some point in time but excitement level went into a flat line again... I would assume that it was an opening to show how Siu (Joel Chan) has this connection to his past life through his dreams. But it was a little too draggy by the some what random robbery case and a murder case in the prostitute house. And I was bored out of some unnecessary conversation going on which was a tad bit too long...
Episode 2 to 4 was way more interesting compared to the first two. I liked how Candice Chiu portrayed the mother that lost her child. That story for ‘婴’ kept me really curious as to what Mrs Ho wanted and the paranoia that the baby’s mother went through was so pitiful. Even though there were a lot of conversational scenes on some baby care methods, i think it was necessary for them to show the transition of how the baby’s mother trusted Mrs Ho to starting to suspect her weird behaviors. Now i’m looking forward to the other stories and now how they ended episode 4 with a flight turbulence!
The next story “娃” was interesting too. What started off as an uncomfortable involvement with dolls for men’s pleasure ended up to be a sad story about how a father felt so lonely after his daughter grew up. But this episode is filled with so much jokes that are so not for children.. 🙂 Anyway kudos for having an interracial couple and the first I’ve seen in a hk drama. Speaks so much about being accepting and diverse.
Following that was “鴉烏” (is it on purpose that they put the name the other way round? Or should I be reading it from right to left instead...) which has a pretty sad ending. Deep meanings in this story... the pressure from society and high expectations from parents on kids nowadays are really prevalent. The moment Tung-Tung said he didn’t want to grow up to face the hardship as an adult related to me so much. It was sad to see everyone losing their memory about Tung-Tung and finally even Tung-Tung himself losing his memory about his parents.
“異夢” was refreshing because it finally brought us back to the past to understand more about their past life (if there is some reincarnation thingy going on). It was so cool to see the opposite of what was happening like how it was Sis Coco dreaming of future Siu while in present life was Siu dreaming of Coco. And also Law Lan Jeh’s cameo!!! The lesbian case was ordinary but I guess it was necessary to link up the stolen $ and the release of Brother Hung.
Finally I got my question answered in these episodes. During Tung-Tung’s case, I was wondering so much on why Tung-Tung’s parent didn’t bat an eyelid when Alex came in to find out why they were arguing so loud. It felt like Alex wasn’t there at all... and I finally found my answer at the end of “洞”. Is Alex dead??? Mmmmm. Have to watch on I guess. Anyway, IMO, there wasn’t much of a supernatural thing going on in “洞”... (other than the fact that the hole in the wall was the creepy element to it) I guess there was an inspirational message going on throughout the story of pursuing one’s dream like how Mia finally found her calling and decided to put in effort in achieving what she wanted. Of course it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of that guy {forgot that guy’s name.. shall call him chicken little like how Siu called him}. Chicken Little was the one who made Mia realize her goal in life despite been an annoying keyboard warrior his whole life...
Next was “金丁” which was the weirdest shit story ever... I was totally baffled at the entire story with that weird ass theory of getting happiness after sleeping with that guy... I think this was the worst story ever that I have nothing to say about it..
Yuki Jeh is actually very pretty!! Her “美魔女” story was interesting because it linked back to her mum in the past. So we get to toggle back and forth between past and present to see the reason for her obsession with beauty. Too bad Yuki Jeh went bonkers till the end.. I wasn’t expecting her to use the cotton wool to wipe it on her face when Shui left 😅
DR POONNNN! Like everyone else, I was anticipating and waiting and waiting for Dr Poon to appear and there she is!!! But she appeared for such a short duration :( Anyway, the story of “Simone” was so cute!!!! I really like the part when they enter the gaming story. The augmented reality they were in was so interesting! And the story really shows how scary technology can be in our digital world. The manifestation of technology, especially in the world of augmented and virtual reality, can be dangerous where our personal data are constantly being collected for other purposes... the love story was just an added feature.. Hahahah KELLY CHEUNG was gorgeous!! And that Big White Duel reference there was cool! Plus also, they were finally revealing the ultimate story behind Siu, Alex, Fai and Coco. Teacher Lam is super mysterious and I’m really wondering what is that “thing” that he refers to suspiciously.
Last story!! 夢遊. Okay actually I’m only till the last second episode. Wow mind blown. They actually came up with some sci-fi thingy where you’d have to almost drown to time travel...? Okay that was out of the blue.. and omg don’t tell me Lam Gor Zai is some cat demon that kills people.
Finished Barrack O’ Karma and I was a little confused at the ending and also annoyed at the fact that they spent a whole 3-5 mins nearing the end to show flashbacks other then providing us with a little more details for the story.
Instead of looking at Lam Gor Zai being a real cat demon or some sort, I would rather view Lam Gor Zai suffering from mental illness as a result. His horrible past (the sacrificial burial) might caused him to suffer from PTSD and resulted in him having DID (dissociative identity disorder) hence the “cat demon”. The cat demon was the other personality he had that harms people. Just like M. Night Shyamalan’s Split movie starring James McAvoy having 24 split personalities, the “Beast” was just one of the personality that goes around harming people.
The final ending was the confusing part. Initially, the part where Coco and Siu (who time traveled) were almost dying on the boat, I thought that if Coco were to die and Siu to survive, Siu would not drown in the present time and Alex would have been declared dead from the missing flight. And if Coco were to survive and Siu to die, Alex would have survived in the present time and found from the missing flight while Siu would have drowned in the water tank. Boy was I wrong... instead, I would think that for Siu to time travel and have altered the past, it has created a whole new dimension in the present where characters we have seen had a whole new story in their lives but yet a striking similarity to what we have seen in the past episodes. (e.g Mia who is now a star with that chicken little who may have a special connection to her, Yuki Jeh who is now blind and unable to “appreciate” the beauty she has, Tung-tung who is now with his family and his dad a common bus driver etc.) As for Alex, she is now (coincidentally still) a flight attendant while Siu now a pilot. The eye contact and tears in their eyes may have brought forth the familiarity both had for each other just like how Alex said that she felt this homey feeling when entering Twilight Mansion and that it felt as if she had been here the whole time.
Oh there was this weird scene where we see Lam Gor Zai and the older version of him (played by Lau Kong) carrying on to Lan Po. Seriously confused by this... I need some explanations here... That was so out of the blue...
Overall, I really enjoyed myself watching this drama with every subplot and ultimately the main story on reincarnation and time travel. Kudos! Looking forward to the sequel which has been green-lit!

Sakura and Syaoran about Fai and Kurogane: “it’s not a double date, we’re just third and fourth wheeling.”
*CACKLES*
“It’s not a double date, we’re just third and fourth wheeling,” Sakura said with so much forced cheer it was almost as if she had been possessed by Fai himself.
Fai who was currently trying not to choke on the mouthful of wine he’d just been trying to swallow.
Syaoran nodded from behind a local newspaper, shushing Mokona as she giggled none too quietly in the folds of his jacket. Beside Fai Kurogane was just sitting there, mouth agape and face red, looking between the two children he had just been betrayed by. Syaoran continued to read. Sakura turned from the confused, and now retreating, waiter, to the pair of flabbergasted adults.
However, this was not her usual smile made of sunshine and birdsong, no this was a smile of tempered steel with a deadly sharp edge. “Sakura-chan,” Fai coughed, heedless of the obvious warning signs billowing forth. “Why in the world did you say that to the waiter just now?”
Smile not faltering one bit, Sakura said “Do you know which memories I got back in the last world when we rescued those two feathers?” The two adults shook their heads silently. “My brother and the high priest are in love, and fully intend to wed one day. They’ve been friends since before I was born. I remembered how impossible it was to get them to admit that they were in love, and how ridiculously they acted in between it all.”
Silence hung between the group for several moments as she waited for the penny to drop. When it became clear that it wasn’t going to anytime soon she sighed. Thankfully, she was spared from having to elaborate.
“We planned this because we realized the two of you are just as bad,” Syaoran said. “And no one wants to watch two grown men romantically dance around each other when they could just talk to each other.”
Mokona poked her head out from underneath Syaoran’s newspaper. “Now Kurogane and Fai can admit they wanna smooch!”
There were a few more beats of silence before Fai stood up very suddenly, drained his glass, and said “I need something stronger than wine if teenagers are going to be giving me romantic advice.”

Jackie Chan and Keung-Kuen Lai in Police Story 2 (Jackie Chan, 1988) Cast: Jackie Chan, Maggie Cheung, Kwok-Hung Lam, Bill Tung, Keung-Kuen Lai, John Cheung, Charlie Cho, Yuen Chor, Ben Lam, Chi Fai Chan, Shan Kwan, Isabella Wong, Ann Mui. Screenplay: Jackie Chan, Paul B. Clay, Edward Tang. Cinematography: Yiu-Tsou Cheung, Yu-Tang Li. Production design: Oliver Wong. Film editing: Peter Cheung. Music: Yao-Tsu Chang, J. Peter Robinson, Siu-Lam Tang. Jackie Chan's hyperactive policeman Cha Ka-Kui has been demoted to traffic as a result of the mayhem in the first Police Story film, but he bounds back under threat from his old enemies. There's a lot more pyrotechnics in this installment, thanks to the explosives wizardry of the film's chief villain, a deaf mute played by Keung-Kuen Lai.

Shang-Chi Villain: Best Tony Leung Movies to Watch
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Tony Leung’s portrayal of Wenwu takes the MCU villain to a whole new level in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the latest feature film in the franchise. Wenwu is complex and textured as written, but veteran actor Leung gives the role such gravity, a level of depth that can only be reached by one of the world’s leading performers. Wenwu easily tops the ranks of MCU’s best villains, but it wasn’t always clear Shang-Chi‘s villain would be a hit. Originally in the comics, Shang-Chi’s father was the xenophobic Asian caricature Fu Manchu. Later, Fu was replaced with the Mandarin, another character that relied on racist stereotypes, so when the Mandarin was announced as the next MCU villain, it aroused concern. However, Iron Man 3 wisely spun the Mandarin to their advantage. Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) became the Mandarin, and the character was rewritten as a mere dimwitted actor, a pawn of greater evil forces. It was a woke revision and appeased the Chinese market so much that Iron Man 3 became a huge box office smash there.
The MCU corrected an outdated racist offense within the Shang-Chi comics canon through Iron Man 3, but the casting of Tony Leung as the “real” Mandarin in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings caused some initial trepidation. However, it’s proven to be another brilliant spin on behalf of the MCU. Firstly, the character is not the Mandarin at all. He’s Wenwu, an ancient immortal who disdainfully dismisses that ridiculous Mandarin moniker. Secondly, Tony Leung is a global A-list actor, a household name across Asia, and a good lure for that lucrative Chinese market…
Who is Shang-Chi’s Villain Tony Leung?
Leung is an internationally acclaimed actor, but not well known in the United States. For those new to Tony Leung, it’s important to know that there are two Chinese actors who go by this name. There’s Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, who is the actor in Shang-Chi. And there’s Tony Ka Fai Leung, who is also a distinguished actor from Hong Kong. Tony Ka Fai Leung is the elder. He won Best Actor at the prestigious Hong Kong Film Awards an astonishing four times.
While SAG doesn’t permit actors to have the same name, this is tricky for China. In Chinese, the surname comes before the given name, so the Tonys are known as Leung Ka Fai or Leung Chiu-Wai in Cantonese. Hollywood usually just goes by the adopted Western name, but some try to add the Chinese name to distinguish the two. Due to the difference in surname placement, sometimes the Chinese is dropped in the middle like Tony Chiu-Wai Leung and other times it’s on the end like Tony Leung Chiu-Wai. Sometimes in Hong Kong, where the British occupation left a lot of English speakers, the Western name is sometimes in the middle, as in Leung “Tony” Chiu-Wai. Regardless, it’s important to know that there’s two Tony Leungs and they are both highly respected Hong Kong actors. Because of their respective ages, Tony Ka Fai Leung is known as “Big Tony” while Tony Chiu-Wai Leung has been dubbed “Little Tony.” They’ve even starred in movies together.
“Little” Tony Chiu-Wai Leung is more famous than his elder. He’s won Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards a whopping five times. He’s also won the coveted Best Actor prize at Cannes. That was for his role in In the Mood for Love (2000), which was also nominated for the coveted Palme d’Or, and is considered by many critics as one of the greatest films of all time. In the Mood for Love was one of many collaborations between Leung and one of China’s most celebrated directors, master auteur Wong Kar-wai. Leung has worked with all the top Chinese directors, producing masterpiece after masterpiece of Chinese cinema. His career spans achingly artsy romances, period Kung Fu movies, ultra-violent gangster films, goofy slapstick comedies, and now the MCU.
For Shang-Chi fans who want to go deeper, Den of Geek has selected some of Tony Leung’s top films for your perusal.
A Chinese Ghost Story III (1991)
The final live-action chapter in Tsui Hark’s defining Fant-Asia genre tentpole trilogy, Leung plays a bumbling Buddhist disciple who falls in love with a ghost named Lotus (Joey Wang). The three-quel reunited some of the original cast and recycled many ideas from the franchise, but the addition of Leung redeems the film. With a provocative peek into Chinese lore akin to the mythical beasts in Shang-Chi’s Ta Lo, A Chinese Ghost Story III is a goofy early role for Leung before he develops his signature smoldering romantic persona.
Hard Boiled (1992)
Considered as one of the greatest Hong Kong gangster films of all time, Hard Boiled is one of Leung’s collaborations with the master of balletic gunplay, director John Woo (Leung also appeared in Woo’s brutal Bullet in the Head (1990)). Leung plays Alan, an undercover cop posing as a hitman. Hard Boiled is famous for an ultraviolent one-er firefight finale in a maternity ward.  Leung was injured in the filming of that scene. One of the many explosions sent glass shards flying into Leung’s eyes and he had to be hospitalized. Leung’s performance was so gripping that it is rumored that Woo changed the script so Alan would survive. Leung was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for his role.
Ashes of Time (1994)
As period martial arts films go, Ashes of Time is exceptional. Based on a renowned martial novel, The Legend of the Condor Heroes by Jin Yong, it was directed by Wong Kar-wai and choreographed by Sammo Hung. Leung plays a blind swordsman in a sweeping martial epic costarring his frequent leading lady, Maggie Cheung. Visually stunning yet somewhat incomprehensible, Wong went way over budget, so to garner more funds, he produced a comedy version with the same cast called The Eagle Shooting Heroes (the film title is the same as the original novel with the addition of a suffix meaning “East into West” – the translation shifted “condor” to “eagle” but it’s the same character in Chinese). When the original prints of film were lost, Wong re-edited and re-scored it as Ashes of Time Redux. The film is highly regarded in art film circles for Wong’s underappreciated early vision. Coincidentally, this film (and consequently The Eagle Shooting Heroes) stars both Tony Chiu-Wai Leung and Tony Ka Fai Leung.
Chungking Express (1994)
Another collaboration with Wong Kar-wai, this is a cop rom-com, told in two separate story arcs. Leung is the heartbroken Cop 663 in the second arc who gets involved in a complicated romance. Chungking Express was recognized as an artistic triumph by film critics around the world. Wong’s unique visual style and technical skill in storytelling earned international praise. The role won Leung another Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards, as well as the Golden Horse Awards.
Happy Together (1997)
Wong Kar-wai won Best Director at Cannes for this groundbreaking LGBTQ film. Leung plays Lau Yiu-Fai and his gay lover Ho Po-Winh is played by Leslie Cheung. Cheung was a top pop singer who came out as bisexual in 1992. Tragically, he committed suicide by jumping off the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong in 2003. He was only 46. A controversial film for the time, even the poster for the film was censored in Hong Kong. Nevertheless, it earned Leung yet another Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
In the Mood for Love (2000)
In the Mood for Love reunites Leung with Wong Kar-wai and Maggie Cheung in a dramatic romance that captured the hearts of audiences around the world. Highly decorated in international film festivals, it made the Top 100 films list for Entertainment Weekly, Empire, BBC and Time Out and is widely considered a cinematic masterpiece. In the Mood for Love is an achingly poignant tale of missed opportunities and unrequited love. It’s one of Leung’s most acclaimed performances. If you’re only going to watch one of Leung’s romantic films, this is the one.
Infernal Affairs (2002)
A gripping gangster thriller, Leung plays Chan Wing-yan, an undercover cop who infiltrates a Hong Kong gang. This is the film that Martin Scorsese remade into the Academy Award winning film The Departed. Scorsese rewrote Chan as Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon). It earned Leung one more Best Actor from the Hong Kong Film Awards, and the film captured seven other wins including Best Film and Best Original Film Song (notable because the song is sung by Leung and his costar Andy Lau – Leung has a significant career as a singer too with over a dozen Cantopop albums). Internal Affairs spawned a trilogy and a TV series, as well as other international remakes beyond The Departed from directors in India, Japan, and Korea.
Hero (2002)
Hero is a truly epic martial arts film from celebrated director Zhang Yimou (Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern). With a lush soundtrack by Tan Dun, Hero received multiple nominations and wins across many respected international awards festivals including the Oscars and the Golden Globes.  Leung plays Broken Sword, an assassin, alongside Maggie Cheung, Jet Li, Zhang Ziyi and Donnie Yen. Li’s character Nameless is the main assassin, but Broken Sword is his equal. And again, Cheung plays Leung’s lover as his partner assassin Flying Snow. If Shang-Chi makes you want to see more of Leung’s Kung Fu, check this one out.
2046 (2004)
The final installment of the trilogy by Wong Kar-wai and costarring Maggie Cheung. In the Mood for Love was the second installment; Days of Being Wild was the first. In 2046, Leung and Cheung reprise their In the Mood for Love roles with a time-travelling spin. It was a masterful move on behalf of Wong. No one expected his to take his internationally acclaimed romance and convert it to a sci-fi. What’s even more astonishing is that it totally worked. Like the previous installment, Leung won yet another Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards where this film also garnered five other wins.
Lust, Caution (2007)
This steamy spy film was directed by Ang Lee, earning him his second Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival (the first was Brokeback Mountain). Set in Hong Kong and Shanghai during the tumultuous 40s, Leung plays Mr. Yee, the target of an assassination plot. It was controversial in China because of its graphic sex scenes, but it earned Leung more Best Actor titles at the Golden Horse Awards and the Asian Film Awards. While the controversy over its explicit sex scenes didn’t reflect poorly on Leung, his costar Tang Wei was blacklisted by the Chinese film industry and lost all her endorsement deals.
The Grandmaster (2013)
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Wong Kar-wai’s last film to date casts Leung as the martial arts master Ip Man, the same historic character played by Donnie Yen in his popular tetralogy. Like Ashes of Time, this film is on a level well above the typical martial arts movie fare. The Grandmaster brings together moving performances, arthouse sensibilities, and dazzling fight choreography in another epic tale of unrequited love. Leung brings such provocative gravitas to the role of Ip Man. While his martial arts skills are not on par with Donnie Yen, Leung trained so hard in preparation for the film that he broke his arm. This is another good example of Leung’s cinematic Kung Fu skills. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings opens in theaters on September 3rd.
