The Last Kingdom: Mark Rowley (Finan) talks improvising on set, character deaths and more
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Fansided] Okay, let’s talk about Rowley’s experience in season 4. We asked him what scene he had the most difficulty filming:
Oh, the scene where we are hanging upside down, I know it was a short scene, but when you have to get upside down all the time, you start to get a headache. You never want to be that actor to be like, ‘Guys, I’m getting to the end point now.’ You don’t want to be the first one, especially you’re trying to be all macho. I’m hoping Ewan is gonna say something, because oh my god my head was killing me. I never had to do that before, it was quite an experience.

Anyways, the three worst "geek news" websites, in order of increasing badness:
Fansided - Just some really incredibly bad takes that clearly exist only as clickbait.
Giant Freakin Robot - Home of "rumours" from "trusted sources" that they clearly just pulled directly out of their ass holes. Also, really incredibly bad takes that exist only as clickbait.
Bounding into Comics - Literally just fascist propaganda targeted at people who mentally still live in the 80s. Die. DIE. DIE!

Hi @fansids! Long time no talk! I did see you putting up some sketches of your lmk au, and and such I had to ask if you were thinking of having Sun Wukong's friends from jttw (the Macaque Demon King, the Snub-Nosed Monkey King, the Lion Camel King, etc.) make an appearance?
Hey! What's up?
I'm so glad you ask, because yes!
They appear in the Reverse Prince Au. The only one who I got anywhere presentable in designing was the Macaque Demon King because monke. Ignore her weird proportions:
Tumblr media
I can't usually imagine voices for characters all that well, but I feel strongly that she sounds like Shohreh Aghdashloo. She's been old since she and SWK met. The Demon Kings part of the story takes place in her territory of the LEGO equivalent of the Himalayas since thats where the Demon Kings congregated to meet about the whole LBD thing.
As for the story:
Plot-wise the Demon Kings were there to help against LBD, but I can't for the life of me remember the specifics of that plan since I never wrote it down. I am definitely regretting it...
Thematically they were part of Red Son's continuous journey of accepting all the parts of his less than stellar past, making peace with it, and moving on. More specifically about how he'll always be Princess Iron Fan and the Demon Bull King's son, and that's not something he can ignore as it comes to play hard in that part. They also worsen part of Qi Xiaotian's issues of constantly feeling like a placeholder for other people.
Also, minor thing, but Red Son is constantly referred to as the Demon Bull Prince in that arc, as he is the son of DBK. While Qi Xiaotian is the son of the false Sun Wukong, hence his original au being called the "False Prince AU." And both are treated accordingly, so that's fun.

https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/706010/to-shape-a-dragons-breath-by-moniquill-blackgoose/
“To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose is an early contender for the best fantasy novel of 2023. It’s one of those books that you have to thrust into the hands of everyone you know, just so you’ll have people to talk about it with. An Indigenous girl, Anequs, finds an egg, which hatches to produce a dragon that’s bonded to her — but according to the laws of the Anglish, who’ve colonized this alternate version of North America, Anequs must go to a special school to learn to control her baby dragon. If she fails her classes, her dragon, Kasaqua, will be slaughtered. What follows is reminiscent of R.F. Kuang’s “Babel”: Anequs is one of two Indigenous people at an elite school full of colonizers, who expect her to assimilate to their more “civilized” mores — but Anequs resists any suggestion that her own people’s knowledge or culture is inferior. Blackgoose’s worldbuilding is rich and fascinating, from the Norse-inspired Anglish culture, to the complex layers of Anequs’s society on Naquipaug island, to the alchemical properties of dragons’ exhalations. But what makes “Dragon’s Breath” such an absorbing read is Anequs herself: clever, resourceful, generous and uncompromising in the face of colonial condescension. This novel has garden parties and classroom scenes that are more suspenseful than most books’ epic battles.”
—The Washington Post
“[To Shape A Dragon’s Breath] has strong The Traitor Baru Cormorant vibes… it will reshape epic fantasy itself, in addition to the breath of a dragon.”
—LitHub
“To Shape a Dragon’s Breath is a remarkable novel that is bound to be a staple of fantasy shelves for years to come.”
—BuzzFeed
“Tender, thrilling and brimming with fire, this indigenous dragon story is one of the more exciting books I’ve had the pleasure of reading recently.”
—In Between Drafts
“Throughout the book, Blackgoose digs up the older roots of fantasy and plants new life with original ideas… a daring, entirely hot, take on dragonriders and worldbuilding… To Shape a Dragon’s Breath is one blazing epic gulp of a fantastic tale. Queer, anticolonialist, and full of dragons. Moniquill Blackgoose’s writing is easy to love: cutthroat, smooth, and reminds me of a story being told over an open fire.”
—Grimdark Magazine
“This is a classic fantasy at its finest, in which a young, underestimated outcast is introduced to a magical boarding school and all the friendships, drama, prejudice, and romance that immersion entails. The indigenous quest to maintain culture and identity within a paralyzingly restrictive imperialism determined to stamp out natives and their beliefs, and Anequs’ stubborn will to remain herself, create a fresh take on this setup and make this a must-read high-fantasy series. Blackgoose's focus on how storytelling and myth influence our culture and worldviews is also compelling. The relationships are exciting, the queer and polyamorous representation appealing, and it’s easy to fall hard for Anequs, her world, and her love for her dragon.”
—Booklist, STARRED review
“Dragons are never out of style, but To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose is set to explore them in a way that feels incredibly fresh and intriguing in this indigenous-inspired fantasy novel.”
—Fansided
“Moniquill Blackgoose combines dragon mythology with sharp commentary on colonization and the struggles of indigenous populations in "To Shape a Dragon's Breath."
—PopSugar
“The fantasy and wonder of To Shape a Dragon’s Breath started immediately. But it didn’t feel like I was thrown into the story; more like I was joining characters and a world that existed without me. To Shape a Dragon’s Breath didn’t feel like there was an on-ramp to the world or culture. It would have been difficult in many books, but Blackgoose crafted a deep culture, society, and world that felt engaging to follow.”
—Lightspeed Magazine
“Blackgoose blends Indigenous history with fantastical beasts, taking themes of inequality and social agency in new directions. An excellent crossover novel for adults and young adults alike.”
—Library Journal
“Between the social commentary (couched in the fantasy world setting), the action, and detailed world-building, there’s a lot to love. It’s an engrossing story/world, and having the Indigenous perspective makes it hit all the harder.”
—Cinelinx
“To Shape a Dragon’s Breath has so many things going for it. It centers on a queer, poly, Indigenous character, dragon-riding and a boarding school setting. With a focus on dismantling colonialism and taking back heritage, what more could you ask for in a young adult fantasy?”
—Geek Girl Authority
“Incredible.”
—BookRiot
“Brilliant.”
—The Nerd Daily
“A fantastic world with wonderful characters, dragons, and places to explore.”

Three new demons from lmk season 4 and their true story from the novel
Well, I did a little research and I think some lmk fans will be interested to know about the three demons from season 4, what they were like in the novel "Journey to the West" (especially for those who haven't read the novel) and compare what they are like we were shown in the series
And let's start with the novel! (a small warning: I have not read the novel 🥲 so all the information I will write here is taken from the Internet)
Soooo Azure Lion, Yellow Toothed Elephant and Golden Winged Great Peng, a trio of powerful Demon Kings infesting the Lion Camel Ridge. The former two dwell in the Lion Camel Cave, the other rules over a nearby city
The Lion Camel Mountain of Journey to the West to exist like a nightmare in the original work. The seventy-fifth chapter of the original book describes a terrifying and terrifying Lion Camel Mountain, even Taibaijinxing specially came to persuade the master and the apprentice to take a detour and not step into this demonic realm
( @fansids answer to anon's question about them):
Tumblr media
(I think it’s clear after that, those guys were so bloodthirsty, dangerous and powerful /// and yes, the information that they ate people really surprised me p.s. and yes, you don’t need to write to me, lol they are demons, what did you expect? I was just very surprised by the description of this cave and the mountain of bones)
What happened in the chapters with Wukong and his friends there, I will not tell, but if you are interested, you can read a short description here
But we have gathered here not to discuss the plot of the novel, but to hear interesting things about these characters (which most likely will not be mentioned in the series). And we start with the Golden Winged Great Peng:
The Peng (a mythological giant bird, which is this case doubles as a Garuda)
The Thousand Ri Travelling Peng is a villainous bird demon
The Peng can fly so fast he can catch up with Sun Wukong's cloud leap in just two wingbeats.
The Peng, son of the Phoenix, brother of Mahamayuri, adopted uncle of Buddha himself. Yet he runs off to become a demon because Paradise is boring (wow, he has great connections in the family of )
The Peng devoured all the citizens of the Lion-Camel Kingdom, and then set himself up as king, recruiting demons to be his subjects
All three are pets of Buddhist deities. The Peng, in particular, is the adopted uncle of Buddha, and he uses this to do whatever he wants
In the novel Peng is actually the strongest of the three
And here will be the difference between the series and the novel. If in the TV series Azure Lion played the main role in their trio (spoiler: he became the strongest at the end of episode 10), then in the novel Peng is the strongest. And I was very surprised by this fact, because Azure Lion interested me so much that I could not think that there was something different in the novel
And now also some facts about the other members:
The Elephant and the Peng. The former has a spear, the latter has a ji with a beautifully painted shaft
The White Elephant is a man-eating monster whose trunk can make people faint by sucking out their soul
The Lion actually shows up earlier as the impostor king of Wuji
The Lion wields one, which is supposedly an Absurdly Sharp Blade
All three are pets of Buddhist deities. The Peng, in particular, is the adopted uncle of Buddha, and he uses this to do whatever he wants
Unlike other demons, these three guys work together against their foe Wukong
I think that these are really interesting facts that we will soon hear about in the series, since the plot about them has already been slightly changed. I was enthralled when I read it all, and all night I couldn't stop thinking about how different they are in the series and in the novel. And even if you tell me that it is not appropriate to compare the book and the TV series, I still like to do it and watch how the directors of LMK slightly change the history of the original characters from the novel))
Tumblr media
Here is a little more detailed information about each of them:
The Azure Lion (青毛獅子) is actually the steed of Manjusri which previously appeared in an earlier chapter as the Lion-Lynx Demon. He is armed with a bronze saber. He is capable of transforming himself into several times bigger or smaller than his normal size. It is said that he once showed up uninvited at a peach feast hosted by the Queen Mother of the West and wanted to fight for the rulership of Heaven. The Jade Emperor sent 100,000 celestial troops to capture the demon, who turned into a giant monster and devoured the entire army in one gulp. The Azure Lion swallows Sun Wukong, who causes trouble inside his stomach. The Lion then pretends to agree to open his mouth and let Sun Wukong out, but intends to bite him to death when he comes out. However, anticipating the demon's intentions, Sun Wukong sticks his Ruyi Jingu Bang out-ahead of him instead and the demon breaks his teeth after biting on the staff. Sun Wukong later creates a long rope, ties it around the demon's heart and plays with it after leaving the demon's stomach. The Azure Lion is eventually subdued and taken back by Manjusri
The Golden Winged Great Peng (金翅大鵬雕) is armed with a ji-polearm and is capable of flying over great distances. He possesses a Flask of Yin and Yang Essence (陰陽二氣瓶) which can suck in unsuspecting victims (similar to the Purple Gold Red Gourd and the Suet Jade Flask, two of Taishang Laojun 5 sacred treasures, mentioned-above). After a while, the victim trapped inside the flask will be reduced to a bloody mash. He uses the flask to trap Sun Wukong but the latter breaks out and the flask is rendered useless because its essence has been spilt. The demon is later revealed to be actually a brother of the peacock Mahamayuri (the Buddha's godmother), as both of them were born to the Fenghuang. The Buddha shows up to subdue the demon and take him back to Vulture Peak
The Yellow Toothed Elephant (黃牙老象) is actually the white elephant that the bodhisattva Samantabhadra rides on. He appears as a giant with an elephant-like face, and is armed with a spear. He has a long nose capable of trapping enemies and crushing them. While fighting with Zhu Bajie, he uses his nose to wrap around him and capture him. He is eventually subdued and taken back by Samantabhadra

An online article on Fansided ranked the Targaryen monarchs. 1. Jaehaerys I - 2. Aegon I - 3. Viserys II - 4. Daeron II - 5. Aegon V - 6. Maekar - 7. Viserys I - 8. Jaehaerys II - 9. Daeron I - 10. Aerys I - 11. Baelor - 12. Aenys - 13. Rhaenyra - 14. Aegon III - 15. Aegon II - 16. Aerys II - 17. Maegor - 18. Aegon IV. Any thoughts?
Pure cringe.
Any ranking that ranks Rhaenyra, who butchered her own people, over Aegon III, who tried his best to rule them fairly, is not something to take seriously. Someone who highly ranks Viserys I, who threw away good rule for decadence and civil war, is not one to take seriously.
Thanks for that, Anon. I need to rinse my brain.
