(March 22) Fashion Friday 3: Kaveh
“Each step taken is delicate, yet as precise as a petal’s fall. Even the sands still for the wandering flower’s grace”
Introducing a Kaveh outfit to match with the Alhaitham one, [Dancing Petals on Still Dunes]. He deserves outfits too- given his default looks annoying to wear at home with all those trinkets.

Fashion Friday
This week, we present a range of fashion from the 18th through early 20th centuries from our 1908 collection of dance illustrations, Der Tanz, by the Austrian artist Ferdinand von Řezníček (1868-1909). This folio volume was published in Munich by Albert Langen (1869-1909), and most of the illustrations appeared earlier in Langen’s popular satirical weekly Simplicissimus. We are quite taken by the action, drama, and humor in these color lithographs that are so evocative of the era. Wikipedia notes that von Řezníček became an editorial assistant for Langen when he launched Simplicissimus, and von Řezníček's "subtly erotic drawings contributed greatly to the success of that publication."

Happy Fashion Friday! This color plate represents the latest (as of May 1884) and greatest in summer fashion.
The outfit on the left is a “house dress made of plain and woven broche Arcadia velveteen; the underskirt is made of the woven broche, the polonaise of the plain goods, with vest of the woven broche.”
The dress on the right is a “[v]isiting costume. The dress is composed of two shades of pigeon-gray surah and Arcadia velveteen; the skirt is kilted, the kilts being formed alternately of the surah and velveteen. The overskirt is of the surah. Wrap of woven broche Arcadia velveteen, trimmed with chenille fringe and ornaments. Gray straw bonnet trimmed with ribbon, and deep pink feathers.”

Godey’s magazine. New York: Godey Co. Vol. 108, no. 647 (May 1884). Catalog record: https://bit.ly/3zaKfvh.

#FashionFriday: when you dress up to match your pet parrot…
Tumblr media
"The Duchess of Richmond and Her Pet Parrot, Westminster Abbey, 1875" by John Gerrard Keulemans (1842–1912) in Ornithological Miscellany Vol. 1 by George Dawson Rowley (1822-1878), London, 1876. This plate illustrates the wax figure of Frances Teresa Stewart (1647-1702), dressed in the outfit she wore to Queen Anne's Coronation, and the preserved body of her pet African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus), her companion for some 40 years who also died soon after her passing. They are on display together at Westminster Abbey:

So I’m kind of obsessed with early 1900s fashion. Gibson Girl aesthetic. Those s bend corsets the thing I’m most impressed with tho is how those girls and women figured out their padding situation to make their waists look so tiny, masters of optical illusions
Uggggh yes 😫 the Edwardian fashion era was truly a marvel of wonder. Here are a few of my favorite outfits/dresses/looks from that time:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I dream about these dresses. I will sew them. Or at the very least, the first one.
Tumblr media
Can we appreciate the drama those freaking hats give? I miss when outfits had matching hats/gloves/parasols to go with it.

Then this is the more traditional Gibson Girl look you were talking about. That classic high collar, lace and frills in abundance, the padding at the chest and bum to give the illusion of a fuller top and bottom. The lines are just so romantic and soft. I like that there is an emphasis on the slopes of ones body, it's just so pretty.
I love how much effort went into dressing back then. I don't love the restrictions, exclusion, discrimination, and ostracization of groups of people in these eras, but damn, the clothes were nice.

(March 8) Billowing Sands of Reflection
“The fabric is woven as how the sands billow through desert winds”
Another outfit design, today for Alhaitham. I wanted to give him something more convenient to wear because I can’t imagine his current fit is easy to put on nor comfy for relaxation…

Fashion Friday
It's been awhile since we've done a Fashion Friday post, but we're back at it with the French magazine La Mode! La Mode began in 1896 in Paris and was printed by Le Gérant : E. Durand. I was unable to find out much else about it, partially because its title was part of the titles of other French fashion magazines from the period—but we do know that the printers also printed Le Petit Journal, a popular daily newspaper.
This issue is no. 38 from September 21, 1923 and features a very fashionably dressed woman on the cover. The text at the bottom is an ad for the fabric dye brand Twink and says (translated from French): "Twink allows you to inexpensively dye your babies' pretty dresses." The issue also includes features on hats, coats, and one on the use of embroidered fabrics in interior design. There is also a supplement included with a design pattern (shown in the last image).
Most of the fashions included in this issue are in preparation for chilly fall weather, so let's let it inspire us to enjoy the warm sunny days of summer while we have them!
