Been a few days in Ekenäs, Finland. Funural for my grandmother and looking at things at her house. Found a lot of old photos. My mother as a young woman, my grandfather and grandmother. My great grandfather. A picture of my great grandmothers house.

We gathered togheter at the house and ate, talked and looked trough things. It was both sadness and joy, strange but it is what it is. My grandmother lived a long and rich life.

Wish I had more time there but yesterday we went home again. But I hope I am able to travel over during the fall and help my relatives more. ❤️

a family has written the name of every member in their massive old Bible from the Finnish homelands for centuries and the boys can't get rid of the ghost any other way but striking their name from the book.

there's something about corn fields that occasionally causes people to go missing in them. children are warned away, especially at night, but nobody can seem to pinpoint what this creature is. it almost seems like the plot of overworked land imbued with hundreds of years of blood sweat and tears is the creature itself. the boys find some recently missing people, but this isn't a case they put to rest. this is one of those forces you just live with.

a small town woman is flagged for reporting her concerns about her elderly neighbor. she keeps seeing a man standing in her front window looking menacing and hearing things being thrown. the little old lady supposedly lives alone. the boys find that the old lady is living in nearly perfect harmony with the somewhat violent ghost of a previous tenant. he likes looking out the front window, he's just grumpy. he throws shoes and books sometimes, but never the old lady or her fine china. she gives him a scolding every once in awhile but they are both lonely, the lady with family that never visits, so they keep each other company. Sam and dean send the ghost peacefully along and bring the old lady's family over to finally visit.

on a typical ghost case, the boys accidentally run into the graveyard caretaker for once. the guy knows exactly what they're talking about but threatens to shoot if they don't give him a heads up next time. the guy brings them to his farmhouse for coffee and shows all of the graveyard records, with his own notes about resulting ghosts, and the boys notice a pattern that points towards something wider going on. the caretaker wouldn't know, this is his only graveyard, lol.

Dream 05.05.2024, 5:14am:

This is a recollection of a dream that I woke from not long ago:

Starts exploring some historical site, an old farmhouse, European, agricultural exhibits etc, I am there with my family. It feels like a museum, there’s an oiled wood smell, food smoke. The building is large, larger than it could or should be, but it feels alien and familiar at the same time.

Day progresses into evening and we walk outside to a huge geothermal lagoon, turquoise blue in colour, steaming hot. Sometimes there’s a beige/brown grass land around it and sometimes there’s a wooden footway. It’s dusk but not too dark? More goofy/misty to being with. My family and I are swimming but it’s not us, it’s archetypes. Ultra Finnish, Nordic, inhuman. Father is painting mother or sister whilst swimming. There’s bad feelings in me.

Eventually it’s getting cold, too cold, we need to head back inside, I don’t to get out of the water it is warm, our limbs are locking. It is hard to move gracefully.

We get out and ascend to balcony - mum/grandmother is struggling. Rolling out, limbs locked. We need to get her inside to the fire. It will be OK.

Outside it’s dark now, wind is picking up rattling the glass and shaking the wisteria leaves. There’s no blooms. Grandmother comes downstairs to fire area, she’s not herself, wearing someone else’s skin. We’re unnerved, she’s unwell and we know she’s going to die.

We’re not pleading, more accepting, being calm so she can go in peace. I ask who she is - it isn’t her face, her body, she’s dismissive, this will do.

We’re talking her through letting go, small talk around the fire, it’s sad but not really.

My grandmother asks me to put my head on her lap, I do, hesitant, I hug her leg as the storm builds outside and I can hear her pulse beating through the material, racing then slowly to barely there then racing agin. I know she’s going to have a heart attack and I will hear it and know when she is gone.

I don’t want to hear her die, but not necessarily afraid.

I am saying goodbye as I wake up in my bed, my arms literally hugging the air besides me, minor pins and needles. My semi-conscious night is telling me it’s Walpurgis Night (even though it isn’t).

@seren-pen tagged me to name my top 9 films and i like being included. this is a little tricky for me though because i'm not a big movie watcher. SORRY!

in no particular order:

1. Howl's Moving Castle - very much a comfort movie. i've put it on the fall asleep to countless times. it's such a lovely movie, visual- and storytelling-wise

2. What We Do In The Shadows - both because it's hilarious and also because i first watched it with my best friends, who live very far away, and so it's sort of a...what's a term like bittersweet, but 'hilarious but also it makes you a little sad'

3. The Old Guard - yeah it's made the list already baby!!! i've already watched it three times in like, a few weeks, which is extremely unusual for me. very well-done drama action with a lovable main group and plenty of opportunities to get weepy. my shit! i just did my third rewatch last night and had the same visceral "fuck yes!" clapping reaction when Nile tackled Martin Shkreli out through the window.

4. The Cuckoo (Кукушка) - a Finnish/Russian movie about two soldiers, a Finn and a Russian, who come upon a Sami woman's isolated farmhouse. it's really good! just a beautifully shot movie about human interpersonal relationships in the midst of war. i'd recommend it for the opening bit alone, where the Finnish soldier escapes from his shackles.

5. Day Of The Dead - i saw Day Of The Dead before i saw Night Of The Living or Dawn Of The, for some reason, so due to sheer timing this is my favorite of the trio. i love them all, but, you know. you always remember your first Romero. Bub, Rhodes' death, the somewhat hopeful ending. how gross and grimy everything feels. the real enemy was toxic masculinity all along, also the zombies. primo.

6. Alien - the best of the Alien movies imo. not a controversial opinion, just an opinion. the atmosphere is so good. and the cat lives.

7. Hellboy (2004) - I actually haven't watched this in a while but am still happy to put it on this list because of how many times i have seen it in my life and how happy it makes me. also, again, cats are saved. that's important to remember. he saves a box of kittens. didn't actually start my thing for men with horns but it definitely helped!!

8. Mad Max Fury Road - wow i don't know where my head is that it took me this long to list this one. i think it's because it's sunday. anyway. i saw this after everyone (like i normally do) and it 100% lived up to the hype. everyone is so so good but of course charlize and tom are just (chef's kiss). i'm sad i only got to see it once in a theatre.

i give up now :\ my brain's stopped working.

Grey Street meets Linnea Gits and Peter Dunham, the creative minds behind Uusi Design Studio

This week we’re chatting with artists Linnea Gits and Peter Dunham about Tarot, their artistic processes, and their inspiring surroundings. 

First things first, tell us a bit about yourselves! Where are you from, and what are your star signs?

Peter and I are both artists working in the field of design. We grew up in the western suburbs of Illinois in the USA and spent most of our lives living and working in Chicago. Peter received a BFA at Northern Illinois University, and we met the summer after his graduation in Chicago. At that time, Peter had a small art studio in the West Loop, and I began apprenticing with him for sculpture and painting. We started dating and eventually moved in together and found a great space - a vast, light filled loft that was once a furniture factory - in a very industrial part of the city that became our home and studio. Close to downtown, low rent, and located in a remote area of the city, this space gave us the freedom to grow our artistic ideas unhurried by the marketplace.

Along the way, our art practice merged with design, and in 2010 we launched Uusi with the idea that life was worth the meaningful effort, and its reward was one of discovery. Within a year of our studio’s launch, we had established Uusi as a creative identity in our hometown of Chicago. A few years later, the wildly successful launch of our Pagan Otherworlds Tarot in 2016 introduced our work to people all over the world. We continued our journey within the Tarot world with a loyal and growing client base for esoteric content and objects, adding an Oracle and two more Tarot decks to our published titles. Working with the Tarot and the creative community surrounding it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives. 

In 2017 we decided to relocate to an area that we had long dreamed of calling home: Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We traded the city’s fast pace and social energy for a slower life in the forest. It was a move that matched our spiritual exploration and has brought us an enormous amount of joy. We now spend our workdays surrounded by deep woods, nine acres of which holds a clearing for rolling farmland where a small dairy farm, built by a Finnish settler in the late 1880s, sits alongside a wandering creek. We knew the minute we saw it, that we were home and purchased it without a second thought. We are taking time, between art and design work, to carefully restore the hand-built, square-hewn farmhouse that is now our home and studio back to its original, humble beauty. Working on this old farm feels sculptural and sacred and feeds both our body and soul - good for anyone, and most definitely for this early Leo (Peter) and Sagittarius (Linnea).

Where were you first introduced to Tarot and Oracle, and what inspired you to start creating decks?

Peter has been collecting old playing card decks and tarot cards for years. He loved the imagery and the quality of vintage decks, and we often used them as inspiration for design projects we were working on at the studio. In 2012 we began a playing card series, and that naturally led us to the Tarot. We loved the meaningful content of the Tarot and how it accessed our minds and our hearts with the creative language of the soul. It is the search we are all on, the individual story that mingles with the ordinary magic of the world to reveal our most authentic self which, in turn, makes us feel most alive.

Is there a particular deck that you are most proud of, or a specific card that you are really proud of designing?

 We are proud of all of our decks! But we definitely have favourite cards from each one. Strength, The Tower, and Death from Pagan Otherworlds. The Lovers from Eros: The Garden of Love. The element cards and The Secret cards from Supra. The Transactinides from Materia Prima that join to create a tableau that nods to Durer’s masterful, Melancholia engraving. These are just some that stand out whenever we work through the decks, but every card has its creation journey, both enjoyable and painful and sometimes even surprising, but ultimately rewarding. 

How does the artistic process for creating Tarot and Oracle differ from your artistic process when creating less spiritual designs?

We have always worked with a great deal of intuitive direction. Color, form, and hand-drawn line create physical feelings that express themselves emotionally and instinctively within you. We have always felt that design should connect with you in this truthful way – it should meet your inner nature as well as the outer one. It should be both useful and beautiful, and if it is, it will be alive and self-creating, which we feel is the definition of spirituality. And that is something that can – should! – meet you in a spoon, table, or deck of cards as much as it does in a church, a tarot, or any meditative object.

I see that you draw inspiration from Celtic mysticism, renaissance illustrations, the beauty of nature and jungian psychology. Are there any “modern” things that you find personally inspiring? Film, music, artists, etc.

All of those inspirations continue to be modern, ha! But yes, we have contemporary favorites. We are big science fiction fans – 2001 A Space Odyssey is a work of art. As is the original Star Trek :). In music, we range far and wide: Metal, Folk, Classical, and pretty much everything in-between. We have an eclectic taste but it's very particular. Peter posts some of our favorites at the studio on our IG account and has a loyal following for those music finds. We also love Japanese printmaking and craft – both old and contemporary. And books!! I am a total book nerd. I'm currently reading "Figuring" by Maria Papova. An insanely inspiring, beautiful work. I also picked up the recent edition of "Fool" magazine, "The Japanese Issue" (in my second life I want to be a sushi chef), and every article was fascinating. Anything by the writer/photographer, Teju Cole. Love the fashion designer Simone Rocha. The Fine Artist, James Kerry Marshall. Relaxed modernism. The grateful invitation to enjoy the quiet, humble luxury of our neighbor's sauna on a cold winter night. Snowshoeing in the woods after a snowfall. Gardening. Our cat, TMobile. Our dog, Yuki. My nephew's drawings. Dark nights filled with stars! The inspiration list is endless.

If you could go back in time and meet your childhood selves, what advice would you give to them?

Linnea: Bake more pies with Grandma B, but take it easy on the sugar – you don’t need to be the mayor of Candytown. 

Peter: Follow your heart like you did the first time.

Is there anything you are currently working on that you would be happy to share with our readers? 

We have a new playing card deck called "Republic" coming out in the spring! We haven't created a new playing card deck for our studio in over four years, so it's pretty exciting for us. The deck's inspiration is Finnish/Nordic folk art and design. There is a large Finnish community in the Upper Peninsula, especially in our hometown of Republic – a Finnish settler built the home that now houses Uusi – how serendipitous is that! And we are excited to have a deck that bears the name of this local community that we love so much. We are also working on a special tarot project that we will be talking about more this summer :)

A deserted farmhouse located on a winding dirt road. No running water or toilet. The house was last renovated in the 50's. "Such a huge renovation is not for everyone," say Niina and Jan who took up the challenge. 

A new fixed closet was made for the veranda and the doors were saved from the demolition of the house.

Access to the porch and other rooms is via the living room. The two walls were painted in dark tones to counterbalance the yellow wallpaper. The door must be an original farm building door.

The sofa is everyone's favorite place to gather and wait for food to be ready.

Wide floorboards and ceiling beams were saved in the renovation. The large chandelier was found at auction.

The old baking oven shines white in the middle of different shades of gray. For renovation, a partial renewal of the plaster and painting with milk-lime paint was enough.

The home combines new and old as well as modern and classic style.

Niina bought the metal bed for herself as a student gift.

Adjacent to the living room, a large and bright room is dedicated solely to children’s play.

The bedside table in the children’s room was painted to blend into its background.

FYI you might want to tag posts as "farmcore" not "homesteading", especially if you're American. The Homestead Act in the 1800s gave white Americans free farms in the west/Midwest as long as they farmed the land for a certain number of years. It contributed to the genocide of Native American as they were pushed off their land and slaughtered. While "homesteading " isn't by definition offensive, it does carry a colonial connotation and can bring up that trauma of genocide for Native Americans

oh I'm sorry! I didn't know that! although I'm not American (I'm from Finland). I chose homesteading because according to Google a "homestead" is a small farmhouse, which is pretty much what I want to live in (and homesteading is the act of maintaining said farmhouse)--and "farmcore" feels like you're only in it for the aesthetic for me personally, the act of homesteading is something close to my heart since maintaining farmlands is an important part of the old Finnish tradition. I just personally associate the suffix "-core" with just appreciating an aesthetic, an idea or picture. "farming" doesn't suit either cuz baking isn't exactly farming per se... if you know like a direct synonym to homesteading I'd appreciate it!
