Chapter 17

I have to choose, and I choose Ten. Though I’ve broken the fragile threads of her trust, I will make amends. I will be better. She is my family now, and I’ll prove it.

Chapter 17 summary: Killian’s memories have randomly returned. At this point, I’m not even going to question it, since no explanation was given as to why his memories vanished in the first place. Anyway, the first page of the chapter is nothing but him thinking about the first meaningful encounter that he and Ten had, back in the start of the series. I don’t fucking care. 

Victor then drags him through Myriad. And while it is interesting to see the other side of Troika… so much time is spent describing things to the detriment of the actual plot. Furthermore, the descriptions are interspersed with Killian’s wangst, which makes it that much worse. 

Victor finally brings Killian to his father’s house, where again, way too much time is spent on stuff that doesn’t fucking matter. He uses electricity to pin Killian in place, where he then starts to torture Killian. 

Killian asks Ten for some of her light. This takes a moment for it to come through, and when it does, he’s able to block Victor’s next blow and to heal his wounds. The light fades after that point, but it’s enough for Killian to have gotten the upper hand. He breaks free and starts physically fighting Victor. 

Bonus chapter 9

PS: Biscuit says “Hi hello how are you I miss you like crazy where are you I want to be with you please come home soon or I’m going to start peeing on your friends.”

Bonus chapter 9 summary: A message from Archer to Ten. (Despite the fact that the last one he sent her bounced. Apparently, forget about the rules that the author created earlier.) He tells her that Myriad soldiers showed up at the warehouse, and a huge battle broke out. In the end, Myriad ended up blowing up the building, rather than to risk it falling into the hands of Troika. So the humans experienced their firstdeath, and anybody who was near obviously experienced their seconddeath. Also, Sloan died again. She was barely a character after the first book, so… bye. 

He goes on to say that Penumbra has become viral, and is spreading not only among the humans, but also the Troikians as well. They’re doing their best to try and contain it, but it’s honestly getting out of hand. Even with the new conduits, there’s only so much that they can do. For the moment, Archer isn’t going to be able to send Ten any more light, in case he’s infected.

Chapter 5

“What about you? What about Nico and Fatima?” They are the other newbies who experienced Firstdeath on the same day as me. Fatima is the youngest at six years old. 

Reed rubs two fingers over his jaw. “I turned down a Leader position, and Fatima’s training has been delayed. She’s not coping well with all the disasters.”

I’m not saying that anybody would be expected to “cope well” after your home gets bombed. All I’m saying is that it’s beyond shitty that they’re putting all of this onto the shoulders of a literal six year old. Who has already suffered so much that she died before she was six. 

I roll my eyes, and say, “I plead the fifth on both counts.”

I’m not up on the laws of other countries, but I’m pretty sure that the fifth is only a thing in the United States. (ie, even if a country has a similar law, it is not “pleading the fifth”.)

And they are not in the USA anymore. 

Explanation if anybody doesn’t know what this means: The fifth amendment is the right to protect yourself against self-incrimination. 

“We have an hour until the vote,” Clementine begins. “I can return to the Eye and—” 

A vibration rides across the Grid, arresting me. Arresting all of us. In unison, we go still. 

“The Secondking has issued a summons,” Raanan says, decoding the message that accompanies the vibration. “Due to murmurs of discontent, the Resurrection ceremony has been moved up. We’re to head to the Garden of Exchange now.”

You know it’s bad when even the author’s tired of her own book and simply wants to move things along. 

For better or worse, I announce, “I vote for...Archer Prince.”

Chapter 5 summary: Ten meets up with Clay, along with two random background characters from the previous book, Raanan and Clementine. At the end of the previous book, Ten had touched Raanan and something had happened to him. In the confusion of everything that had happened, Ten kind of forgot that she might be able to turn people into conduits. But he tells her about his blossoming status as one right now. 

Ten tells her friends about the Killian situation, but not about how dire it is… For both of them. 

Everybody is then summoned to do the resurrection vote right now, so they go. At the area, Ten asks that her friends leave with baby Jeremy, in case things get violent, and then goes up to talk to the Secondking, Eron. 

He already knows about the Killian situation, but he’s of the opinion that love is somehow more important than anything. And I have to say, kind of digging this guy’s vibes. Anyway, he goes on to say that he now knows that Ten isn’t simply a conduit, but an architect, who can make more conduits. That her role in all of this is now more important than ever. But goes on to say that only those who fully accept the light will receive conduit status. Which is why others Ten has touched, like Clay, haven’t become conduits as well. 

Then they return to where everybody is eagerly awaiting to hear who she wants to bring back. Half of them are chanting for Orion, and the other half for Levi. To literally no reader’s surprise, she says she wants to bring back Archer.

Chapter 12

“If I give you the key to a car, Miss Lockwood, and you crash it, which of us is at fault?”

The person who knows that Ten can’t drive a car, yet gave her keys anyway. 

Next question. 

“Oh, and in case you haven’t been told, if you lie during these proceedings, you will be stripped of your duties indefinitely.”

You say that like it’s a fucking punishment. Ten didn’t ask for this, nor does she want to be doing this. 

But at the same time, I can’t help but laugh over the idea of them pushing Ten to be something that she’s clearly not, yet they also strip her of all and any Troikian power simply because… Again. They pushed her from the nest before she knew how to fly.

“Troikans are supposed to love others,” I say and blink.

[...]

“He has harmed and killed many Troikans,” one of the jurors says.

Did I miss the part where there was the exclusion? It says “love others”. Period. End of sentence. 

“We are supposed to help others. Shouldn’t we help even those who have hated us?”

I love this so much. Turn their own words, their own law, against them, and show them for the hypocrites that they are. 

“You were told to watch and observe, and yet you dived headfirst into action right from the start. You need seasoning.”

Once again going back to the car metaphor, you can’t be angry at somebody when she’s had like 2 weeks of driver’s ed. 

Like you KNEW that Ten was brash and impulsive, yet you actively CHOSE to send her into the field. This is 100% on you, and you don’t get to be angry that the girl was brash and impulsive!!

“We need our Conduit,” he says, “and until you’ve unlocked access to the entire Grid, you’re just another soldier.”

You say that you need her, yet every single thing in that joke of a trial said otherwise. 

We enter the abode, and all I can do is gape. A wide entrance hall spills into a formal parlor, which leads to a polished library, an opulent dining room, and a cheery sitting room. 

“Archer lived here? My Archer?” 

“He earned the right.” Victor sounds proud. “Because we have free will, the work we do carries great significance. We choose, and so we are rewarded for our successes.”

I think it’s fucking hilarious how those judges claim that “everybody is equal”. Yet it’s beyond obvious that they play favourites, and reward those who obey without question. 

Sounds an awful lot like communism. 

“We don’t have a moment to waste.” Victor heads for the door. “Let’s go!”

Chapter 12 summary: Ten rushes to her meeting, which is overseen by some literal children. I don’t understand it, either. Anyway, they’re all angry at Ten for her brash and impulsive behaviour. But as I keep saying: the girl barely had her firstdeath. This is 100% on you lot for pushing her into the field before she was ready. There’s a reason why they take a year to train people before they go. 

When they get out of the meeting, Levi tells Ten that Lina is now being punished by Myriad for her actions towards Ten; I don’t follow the logic, but I don’t think it matters in the long run. Lina is seeking sanctuary with Troika for now, but refuses to set a court date. Levi wants Ten to go talk to her aunt, but doesn’t make it an official mission, so Ten says that she’ll think about it. 

She and Victor then go to visit Archer’s home, which is basically enshrined until this resurrection vote will happen. If he isn’t picked, then it’ll be torn down and made into a new home for somebody else. Inside, Ten finds this staff that has… Crystal knives in it? I don’t really understand, except to get the concept of the vibes the author was going for. Victor tells Ten that the weapon is hers now. 

A moment later, an alarm goes off. Victor says that both sides are fighting over Dior’s unsigned boyfriend, who has also been infected. He goes on to say that it’s possible the boyfriend has infected somebody else; this is spreading faster than they would like.

First Loss

The sound of the canon was too loud, and too soon. The body of his male tribute fell. and Kayne just sat still, clenching his fist. Do not show weakness, he would not cave under it. He despised this so much, and he knew that somewhere in his District, a family and friends were screaming in sorrow... 

And of course, the capitol just watched in amusement, cheering.
