Evacuation alerts have been expanded to include several new communities Saturday as firefighters battle strong winds in their effort to douse the flames.
In the Fort McMurray, Alta., region, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) expanded its alert as of 3 p.m. Saturday to include: Fort McMurray, Saprae Creek, Anzac, Fort McMurray First Nation #468, Gregoire Lake Estates and Rickards Landing Industrial Park.
The RMWB said the expanded notice is due to the “risk of wildfire” and means residents must be on alert to leave at a moment’s notice.
In an update posted to its website, the RMWN said it also “anticipated that Highway 63 will be impacted later today which would result in a temporary closure. This closure would be south of the highway 63 and 881 junction.”
“At this time, it is not believed that Highway 881 will be immediately impacted. Access to Fort McMurray will not be impeded as highway 881 is not expected to be impacted or closed at this time,” the statement continued. [...]

Where There’s Oil, There’s Fire: Lessons from Canada’s Costliest Disaster
John Vaillant’s Fire Weather proves people are behind ever-worsening wildfires
On the morning of May 3, 2016, the residents of Fort McMurray, a northern Alberta town known for the mass extraction of oil, experienced the apocalyptic outcome of every forest fire. What became colloquially known as “The Beast” burned across 579,767 hectares of land, incinerated thousands of homes, forced the evacuation of nearly 90,000 people, and became the costliest disaster in Canadian history at nearly $10 billion. Vaillant has always had an eye for the gargantuan. In 2005’s The Golden Spruce, it was big trees and big West Coast forest; in 2010’s The Tiger, it was big cats and big Siberian taiga. In Fire Weather, it is big machines, big industry, and big fire. Perhaps biggest of all is the hubris of Alberta’s oil industry: a fusion of ambition and greed that drives investors to spend “half a trillion dollars to date” on “the largest, most expensive, most energy-intensive hydrocarbon recovery project on Earth.”

“Starved To Death In His Lonely Hut,” Toronto Star. January 19, 1931. Page 1. ----- Tragedy of Wilds Revealed in Police Report --- Edmonton, Jan. 18 (CP). - ‘The sun is shining, mother, but I feel so cold. I can still walk a little, but that’s about all. There is no blood in me, because I haven’t eaten for so long. I haven’t seen another human being for 40 days now. There are some magazines here, but the stories are so silly. I have some cards but I don’t care for solitaire. The only thing I worry about if God will forgive me for my sins.’
James Eldon Michael, 25, wrote this letter to his mother, Mrs. L. A. Williams, Albany, Cal., shortly before he died in a lonely hut at Long Rapids, Hay River, last spring, it was revealed in the annual report of Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachments to ‘G’ division headquarters in Edmonton.
Michael attempted to make the same trip along the Hay which Kurt Faber, German writer, his life the winter before. His letter was found only recently, near his skeleton hand.

Finally introducing Marion (Sherwood Park) after months and months of teasing! She represents a bedroom community east of Edmonton that "technically" is one of the largest cities in Alberta... or would be, if it was actually a city.
Your first fun fact is that Marion was originally going to be named Campbelltown, but since there were too many Campbelltowns across Canada, Canada Post forced her to change it to avoid confusion. She's much much younger than most of the other munis being founded in 1953.
More fun facts below!
Tumblr media
Like Mac, Marion represents a "hamlet" in a very large service area, which means she can reap the benefits of being both rural and urban at the same time while also benefiting from living in Ed's shadow too.
I think generally the relationship between her and Ed is "he's scary! one time, i actually had to go to his house and nearly died!!"
where Ed is like "I don't know what her deal is or why she freaks out whenever I'm around" (meanwhile Edith trying to explode her with her mind)
She's just masc enough that Mac doesn't feel intimidated by her and they're best buddies. Her other close friends are other satellite communities such as Stab St. Albert and Spruce, etc.
Tumblr media
The Strathcona County Website boasts their own Raisin Sour Cream Pie Recipe, which is sooo mid-century 'Berta lol. Back in the 50s, Marion had much longer hair, but found the upkeep too difficult and sheared it all off some time in the last few decades.
Refinery Row occasionally makes national meme news, I remember seeing some "THIS CITY IN CANADA LOOKS LIKE THE EYE OF SAURON" type clickbait on blogto or some such thing that I can't find now, and apart from not being a city, we immediately clocked the location from the photo. It just looks like that sometimes. Don't worry about it. :)
Tumblr media
Like I say, don't worry about it!
Was doing a lot of newspaper research in the late 80s/early 90s and a plastics plant explosion was front page news for a while, so this was on my mind.

Tony Brushett, the executive director of the Salvation Army in Yellowknife, said he's "fairly confident" that his organization has made contact with the 120-or-so individuals that use the shelter regularly.
Brushett said most of Yellowknife's underhoused population was evacuated to Calgary and were connected with shelters and other services in the city for the past three weeks.
Still, some went to Edmonton and Fort McMurray, Alta., among other locations.
"We work with folks there," he said. "Again, we are fairly confident we have contacted most of them."
In Calgary, most people went to the city's Centre of Hope shelter and were registered there with staff. [...]

Note from the poster @el-shab-hussein: Reminder that the Salvation Army is hot garbage and my choosing to post this article is not an endorsement of them or their screwed up evangelical belief system. Tagging: @politicsofcanada, @abpoli

Are there any carpets that cannot be cleaned?
Introduction
Carpets are a popular choice for flooring, adding warmth, comfort, and style to homes and offices. However, maintaining their cleanliness and appearance can be challenging. Have you ever wondered if there are carpets that simply cannot be cleaned? At J & R CLEANING Company, we’ve encountered various carpet types and stains, and we're here to share our insights on which carpets pose the most significant cleaning challenges and why.
Understanding Carpet Materials
Before diving into the specifics, it’s essential to understand the different materials used in carpet manufacturing. The material composition plays a crucial role in determining the cleanability of a carpet. Capet Cleaning Fort McMurray highlights that carpets can be broadly categorized into natural fibers and synthetic fibers, each with unique characteristics.
Natural Fiber Carpets
Wool
Wool is a luxurious natural fiber known for its softness and durability. However, it is highly absorbent, making it susceptible to staining and damage from excessive moisture.
Sisal
Sisal is a natural fiber derived from the agave plant. It is durable and environmentally friendly but can be challenging to clean due to its coarse texture and sensitivity to water.
Jute
Jute is another natural fiber that offers a rustic charm. It is softer than sisal but equally sensitive to moisture, making it prone to mold and mildew if not properly cared for.
Synthetic Fiber Carpets
Nylon
Nylon is one of the most popular synthetic fibers used in carpets. It is known for its resilience and stain resistance, although it can be susceptible to oil-based stains.
Polyester
Polyester carpets are valued for their vibrant colors and resistance to fading. However, they can attract oily stains, which can be difficult to remove.
Olefin
Olefin, also known as polypropylene, is highly resistant to moisture and staining. However, it is less resilient than nylon and can be crushed under heavy foot traffic.
Factors Affecting Cleanability
Several factors influence how easily a carpet can be cleaned, including its material composition, the type of stains it encounters, and its age. Carpet Cleaning Services Fort McMurray often finds that older carpets with worn fibers are more challenging to clean than newer ones.

Challenges with Natural Fiber Carpets
Sensitivity to Moisture
Natural fibers like wool, sisal, and jute are highly absorbent and can be damaged by excessive moisture. This sensitivity makes them more challenging to clean, especially with water-based methods.
Risk of Shrinking and Discoloration
Improper cleaning techniques can cause natural fiber carpets to shrink or discolor. For instance, using hot water on wool can cause it to shrink, while harsh chemicals can lead to discoloration.

Professional Cleaning Techniques
Hot Water Extraction
Also known as steam cleaning, this method involves injecting hot water and cleaning solution into the carpet fibers and then extracting it along with dirt and debris. It’s highly effective for deep cleaning but must be done carefully to avoid over-wetting.
Dry Cleaning
Dry cleaning uses minimal water and relies on specialized cleaning compounds. This method is suitable for delicate carpets and those sensitive to moisture.
Bonnet Cleaning
Bonnet cleaning involves using a rotating pad soaked in cleaning solution to scrub the carpet’s surface. It’s effective for routine maintenance but may not remove deeply embedded dirt.
Special Considerations for Delicate Carpets
Antique and Vintage Carpets
Antique and vintage carpets require special care due to their age and delicate materials. Professional cleaners with experience in handling such carpets are essential to prevent damage.
Handmade and Hand-Knotted Carpets
Handmade and hand-knotted carpets are often valuable and intricately designed. They need gentle cleaning techniques to preserve their beauty and structural integrity.
The Role of Carpet Protection Treatments
Benefits of Stain-Resistant Treatments
Applying stain-resistant treatments can help protect carpets from spills and stains, making them easier to clean and maintain over time.
Application and Maintenance
Regular reapplication of stain-resistant treatments is necessary to ensure continued protection. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for best results.
When to Consider Carpet Replacement
Signs That a Carpet Is Beyond Cleaning
If a carpet is heavily stained, worn, or damaged, cleaning may not be enough to restore it. Indicators such as persistent odors, significant discoloration, and frayed fibers suggest it’s time for replacement.
Cost vs. Benefit Analysis
Consider the cost of repeated professional cleanings versus the expense of replacing the carpet. In some cases, investing in a new carpet may be more cost-effective in the long run.
Tips for Maintaining Carpet Longevity
Regular Maintenance Routines
Regular vacuuming, prompt stain removal, and periodic professional cleanings can significantly extend the life of your carpet.
Preventative Measures
Using doormats, removing shoes indoors, and rearranging furniture periodically can help reduce wear and tear on your carpets.
Conclusion
Maintaining clean and beautiful carpets is a task that requires attention to detail and an understanding of the materials involved. While most carpets can be cleaned effectively with the right techniques and professional help, certain types and stains pose unique challenges. If you're searching for a "Carpet Cleaning Company near me," look no further than J & R CLEANING Company. We are committed to providing top-notch carpet cleaning services tailored to your needs, ensuring your carpets stay fresh and vibrant for years to come.
