hi! i hope this is alright to ask but i was wondering if you had any reading recommendations about invasive species and their management/control/rhetoric. there just seems to be a lot to it. thank you!

Woah. Look at this post I was drafting literally two hours before you sent this, about the nationalist appropriation of rhetoric of "native vs. invasive" species in Hungarian land management:

Appropriate case study: (1) The tree was non-native and its introduction was facilitated by Austro-Hungarian imperial aristocracy and military, especially as fortification during wars in the eighteenth century. (2) It out-competed native trees and the government encouraged plantations of the species. (3) Because of its economic and political importance, the reactionary Hungarian parliament in 2014 officially named the tree "Hungaricum" (native/national heritage).

Yes, there is a lot. This is practically a whole discipline.

If you're looking for a collection, anthology, or singular book with multiple tangents, angles, or perspectives (rather than having to search through individual articles or journals), there are three collections I'm recommending below, but this also might be helpful:

Feral Atlas: The More-Than-Human Anthropocene, co-edited by Anna Tsing (she's probably the most high-profile scholar of this subject). Aside from containing a bunch of freely-available essays from about 100 authors on altered ecologies and rhetoric/imaginaries of environments in the Anthropocene, their big online portal just published the entire syllabus with a bunch of maps and graphics and free articles, in formats for non-academic reading groups, undergrad classes, and graduate seminars. If you go to Feral Atlas's homepage, you'll see a straightforward list of all of those authors.

It's been a "transdisciplinary" topic (especially in the past 15-ish years) in environmental humanities, ecocriticism, environmental studies, "science communication," anthropology, etc. (I think the humanities or interdisciplinary scholars handle the subject with more grace than ecology-as-a-field proper.) It shows up a lot in discussion of "the postcolonial," "ecopoetics," "Anthropocene," "multispecies ethnography," and "the posthuman"; Haraway was explicitly writing about rhetoric of invasive species in the 1990s.

A significant amount of posts on my blog from 2018-2022 are about invasive/alien/native labels. I summarized some of the discourses in my post about Colombian hippos. Murderbot and ART reading each other's mind

Murderbot claims that ART does not read its mind – that it really knows Murderbot well. But sometimes, it DOES appear as though ART is reading Murderbot’s mind. As if its inner thoughts are leaking into its private feed where ART is sitting and watching.

Here are some examples:

I hate it when ART is right. “I can’t do anything about that.”

You can’t alter your configuration.

I could see the skepticism through the feed. “No, I can’t. Look up the specs on SecUnits.”

SecUnits are never altered. Skepticism intensifying. (Artificial Condition, p.42).

How can see the skepticism through the feed, unless they know each other very well? Murderbot has observed and calibrated ART’s various responses through the hours of joint media viewing, and can now interpret subtle changes in the feed. Basically reading ART.

[Quote]

Its arms were bare, and there was no metal showing and no gun ports. This was not a SecUnit.

I was looking at a sexbot.

That is not the official designation, ART said.

The official designation is ComfortUnit but everybody knows what that means. (Artificial Condition, pp.89-90).

I mean, how can ART tell that Murderbot is looking at a ComfortUnit, thinking of it as a sexbot, without reading its mind?

Without drones, I couldn’t see what it was doing. ART had switched over to Iris’s feed, using her enviro suit camera, and the resolution at this distance wasn’t good. ART needed a field equipment upgrade. Wait, a human would look at it, right?

ART said, Look at it. It’s obvious you’re avoiding it.

Maybe I’m a nervous human who’s afraid of bots, I told ART, but I looked at it anyway. (System Collapse, p.13)

By the beginning of System Collapse, ART is practically always in Murderbot’s head in order to monitor its stats. Murderbot also has the constant awareness of ART’s activities, because of their practically wall-free intimacy. ART can probably hear anything Murderbot is thinking in language (human or machine language) unless Murderbot tries very hard to think privately.

In this scene, it is also sweet that Murderbot does as told by ART, because even though it hates when ART is right, it knows when ART is right (which is always).

(Obviously this is not actually what I’m upset about, it’s just easier to be angry about B-E Unit1’s fuckup and/or disregard for minimum client safety.)

Safer to be angry about it, ART said on our private connection. (System Collapse, p.15)

It really is literally reading Murderbot’s thoughts.

I should have paid more attention. I’d fucked that up, too.

We both fucked that up, ART-drone said. No, it doesn’t read my mind, it just knows me really well. I should have banned refreshment items containing stimulants earlier in the day. (System Collapse, p.133)

Even if ART isn’t reading Murderbot’s mind (which I think it is), ART’s choice of expression is also spot-on.

On our private channel, I asked ART-drone, Is it one of ours?

There’s a 66 percent chance, ART-drone replied. If after our first message they decided to send assistance, they could have met the second pathfinder en route and received the map coordinates that would allow them to locate our exact position.

Sometimes the thing where it’s like ART reads my mind goes both ways. I said, But you don’t think it is.

No. (System Collapse, pp.191-192).

[Comment]

Murderbot says “it’s like ART reads my mind goes both ways” – even if it is not literally reading its mind, they are so attuned to each other’s processing patterns, that by noting spikes in the feed activities, they can read each other.

Re-upping a strong rec for all things radical reform & rebellion in the 1810s-20s: E.P. Thompson's Making of the English Working Class. Interesting how much of Luddite history and uprisings were indeed in Nottingham(shire), Glasgow, and London. We love to see it.

As for Days 26–27, here I'm also relying on those records about the real Crown & Anchor (see prev. citations).

TBH I did a speedrun through the entire Black Sails series, and in my head, Tharkay's world pre-Temeraire was basically Black Sails 85 years later. His experience of Macao might as well be the Anglo-Chinese Nassau: the cutthroat tactics, the deeply suspicious individual cunning, the sudden swerves of loyalties, the layers upon layers of private goals and ambitions, the way that even your teammates and lovers and most trusted friends could kill you any minute? (Plus the hatred of the hypocrisies of empire and the follies of short-sighted men?) That's what it was like for (my) Tharkay. S/o Lt. James McGraw—know no shame.

Austen stayed on Henrietta Street in London, and Austen is always nearby when I'm writing this fic, esp. for dialogue, because why would you go anywhere else for dialogue or free indirect narration.

The Bengali dragons (who sadly in the final draft don't appear onstage) come from the canon scene in League of Dragons [pp.185—190]. I also imagined my Priya Ghuri as a Himalayan dragon (breed Pālaka Cilla, from the Sanskrit words for 'protector/shield' and 'kite/sky'): imagine something like a much more draconic Falkor, white-scaled, reptilian, fanged, but also yeti-furry to survive the alpine climate of the Himalayas, and very rare if not fully legendary (thus part of Tenzing's childhood tales).

In the period around 1817, the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent were often in revolt against British (in this period meaning East India Company) rule. This includes the Second and Third Anglo-Maratha War, plus the Anglo-Nepalese War (Treaty of Sugauli, 1816). Coverage of these wars and praise for the then-Governor-General of India, the Marquess of Hastings, showed up in the Times of London and in parliamentary debates around early Feb. 1817.

Even though the real 'London club-land' vibe didn't get into full swing until the mid- to late-Victorian period, there were certainly gentlemen's clubs and dining societies for Georgians. I also borrowed (proleptically) some enormous paintings for their walls — like Lear's Mount Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling(1877) — and just, as it were, imagined dragons.

I finally gave Tenzing's mother a name. Because Tenzing is — in my story — Nepali by heritage, and that region was complicated by British rule/intervention for the generation+ before Tenzing's birth, I think his mother would today be Nepali but with more Tibetan rather than Indian or Chinese heritage. So 'Baskota Dawa Tharkay': Baskota is a common Nepali surname (and I think I am right that common usage styles Nepali names with surname/family name first, given/first name second); Dawa is a given name across several Himalayan societies, meaning 'moon,' also 'Monday,' as a marker of an ancestral Tibetan/Buddhist lifeway. 

Lastly (for now), the lantern that Tenzing buys for Tem. in Belgium (not that there was a 'Belgium' in 1817) is based on this stained glass lantern which borrowed reconstructed much older pieces of glass into a new Gothic art object for Strawberry Hill. It's big. My friend did her diss on c19 repurposing of older stained glass, including how novel and rapidly evolving techniques for modern glass manufacturing sometimes overlapped with glaziers and antique dealers who took advantage of the dismantling of many European churches around Napoleon, selling off segments of ancient or medieval glass. But there's another fic in that to come…

Spellsteel Bow (it's a regular bow, this game doesn't like elf-based weapons)

Dawn Robes (grants Diurnal Impetus, which grants +20% Mag Atk broadly, and +1 AP during the day)

Mystic Conferral is granted to the front row as needed, while Icicle Arrow is the main focus. Wind Arrow exists for 1AP actions.

All of his PP skills are free. Diurnal Impetus, Pure Field, and Selfless Heal.

Strategy I want it known I spent like an hour looking through options to arrive at this, literally one (1) map before the random training battle where a Featherstaff shows you this exact idea.

Celeste! I like her a lot! I really wanted to get her to work, but with her general skills, she really seemed like she was only good for fighting cavs. Evasion is decent, but her raw power wasn't anything exceptional. That's when Fatal Dive caught my attention. It's impossible to guard, and deals flat damage. With the Ervelda Talisman and another HP booster, Celeste hits fantastic HP. Add the Dew, and that's another +10. Mine is currently sitting at 145 HP, dealing 72 damage to a full column with this swing. On her own, she's excellent at clearing options.

Liza exists to block hits and help recover. In all truth, I could probably swap Tatiana for Sanatio, who has natural Overheal and Holy Cradle to endure a hit, which would pop the fuck off with Yunifi. But it's late and I'll make that adjustment tomorrow, I was just rushing to finish. Anyway, I bring this up because Liza's guard also recovers HP to keep Celeste going, and if we could endure, Yunifi would be really, really funny.

Anyway, Yunifi is damage dealer 2. She is on the front line, relying on high evasion the overheal effect to survive. The retaliation is what we're aiming for. It hits three people at once, for full damage. With Retaliation Earrings, this is an incredibly hard-hitting attack. She also capitalizes on the freeze that Lhinalagos applies with massive shots.

Tatiana herself exists to overheal. She's a decent cleric besides, but I do have to admit, Sanatio is likely a better choice for the stage. Natural overheal means flexibility with the staff, and Endure effects are really good. But, on the flip side, Parting Resurrection is game-changing for an actual stage. Even if a character drops, we can revive them and keep plowing through the stage. That is, I think, the real value here.

Celeste took out like 60% of the final map. That is not an exaggeration. She could beat pretty much anything without taking almost any damage, and thanks to Parting Resurrection, even if someone did drop, they're right back the next fight. Endurance considerations were more significant than her fighting ability. The only team to do as well as Alain's. Entire teams I had expected to perform wonderfully just fell apart while Celeste tore the stage apart. I was initially fearful that I wouldn't have much that Celeste could accomplish in a team. But here we are, as the second most useful composition we devised. I'm extremely satisfied with how this turned out.

I started work on the outside area. I downloaded a LOAD of free asset packs from open game art to decorate my map with as I wont have time to make my own. I wanted to make the area open and eery.

Lords Mobile X Shrek

The Shrek collaboration event started in December 1, 2023, and is set to end later today on January 31, 2024 (GMT -5). Kinda sad to see it go. If anything, this was probably one of the most laidback collab event thus far! Not to mention, it actually featured two event shops!

Shrek's Adventure

The first collab event is the puzzle event, Shrek’s Adventures!

Upon logging in, players get a free Royal Crown which can be used to find fragments of Fairy Tale Pages aka the puzzles. The resulting reward is either a puzzle piece, or an Ogre sign. The latter of which can be exchanged for themed items in the Far Far Away Shop. Players can also get one Royal Crown Chest per day from Monster Hunts, and from other in-game events.

Shrek's Search for Fiona

Another collab event is Shrek’s Search for Fiona, which is basically a flip the tiles kind of game. Each tile in an Exploration board corresponds to a certain True Love’s Kiss and/or Fairy Tale Coins, which can be redeemed for themed items in the True Love Shop. The round ends when players flip a 3rd posion apple tile. Also, as with Shrek’s Adventures, logging in gives a player a free Swamp Map for Exploration, and from other in-game events.

Randomly, there are "Special Events" which dictates the kind of board for the next round. For these, there are three modes: Fiona Time, True Love's Awakening, and Twisted Tale.

And lastly, a limited game mode for this collaboration is the Shrek Showdown. The price of which, for the #1 player, is apparently a Lord's Mobile themed Johnny Walker lol (I included the picture because it looks kewl!)

In this game mode, each tier requires a different mission focus, and each tier lasts for two days. After which, a new tier opens.

This game mode is different from others in this collaboration in that it has a Solo aspect and a Guild aspect to it. My progress  (and that of my guild’s) is as follows:

The resulting, accumulated Shrek Sign from completing each tier can be redeemed for items in the Shrek Sign Exchange Shop—

Google has announced plans to invest $1 billion in a new data centre in the UK which it says will help to meet “growing demand” for its AI and cloud services.

The 33-acre site in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire will bring much-needed compute capacity to businesses, supporting AI innovation and ensuring reliable digital services for Google Cloud customers and general consumers relying on products like Search, Maps, and YouTube.

Ruth Porat, Alphabet’s president and chief financial officer, said the data centre “represents our latest investment in the UK and the wider digital economy.” She added that it builds on previous investments like Saint Giles and Kings Cross offices, a multi-year research deal with Cambridge, and the Grace Hopper subsea cable connecting the UK with the US and Spain.

Porat said the facility will “help meet growing demand for our AI and cloud services and bring crucial compute capacity to businesses across the UK while creating construction and technical jobs for the local community.”

As a pioneer in computing infrastructure, Google runs some of the most efficient data centres in the world and has committed to powering them entirely on carbon-free energy around the clock by 2030.

Last year, Google signed a deal with ENGIE for offshore wind energy from Scotland’s Moray West farm which will provide 100MW of energy and put UK operations on track for 90 percent clean energy by 2025.

The new data centre will recover heat for local homes and businesses while also deploying an air-cooling system.

Porat called the new data centre the “latest in a series of investments that support Brits and the wider economy” and evidence of its “continued commitment to the UK.” Other investments include $1 billion for its Central Saint Giles office space, developing the one million sq ft King’s Cross campus, and an Accessibility Discovery Centre spurring accessible technology.

Beyond offices, data centres, and subsea cables, Google has also provided digital skills training for over a million Brits and expanded its AI-focussed Digital Garage curriculum to capitalise on demand for the technology.  

Google’s announcement follows Microsoft confirming a £2.5 billion data centre in the UK last November after overcoming regulatory hurdles for its £55 billion Activision Blizzard acquisition.

“This is the single largest investment in its 40-year history in the country which will see Microsoft grow its UK AI infrastructure across sites in London and Cardiff and potential expansion into northern England, helping to meet the exploding demand for efficient, scalable, and sustainable AI specific compute power,” explained HM Treasury.

“Data centres process, host, and store the massive amounts of digital information that is critical for developing AI models.”

Microsoft is supplying its UK data centre with more than 20,000 advanced GPUs for machine learning and the development of new AI models.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt said: “The UK is the tech hub of Europe with an ecosystem worth more than that of Germany and France combined – and this investment is another vote of confidence in us as a science superpower.”
