My Dwight Frye fixation is low-key an obsession now and I don't know how to feel.
Anyways, who wants to ask for my headcanons about a random character of his :3

One of the many unsung heroes of the Universal Monsters pictures.
Dwight Frye.
Most notable for playing Renfield (Dracula) and Fritz (Frankenstein).
Immortalised further in the Alice Cooper song Ballad of Dwight Fry (without the 'e') and on the back of the Rob Zombie's album The Sinister Urge.
Universal Monster credits include - Dracula, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, Son of Frankenstein, The Ghost of Frankenstein, Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman.

DISQUALIFIERS WILDCARD ROUND
several people sent in doctors that don't actually fit the terms of the bracket, but certain of them felt like that they'd either be Suitable or Funny to include, despite their lack of qualifications for the actual competition going on. but in the end, a 42nd doctor was needed to make up an even number of contestants, so we'll accept one Disqualifier Doctor into the prepared bracket!
[note: this concerns Victor Frankenstein from 'Young Frankenstein' (1974) specifically, Victor Frankestein from the original novel will appear elsewhere in the bracket]

Thoughts on Fritz from "Frankenstein" (1931)? I know everyone has a crush on Dwight Frye as Renfield in "Dracula" (1931), myself included, but I admit, Fritz ain't bad either!
It took me a while to get around to watching Dracula even after reading it. SHAME. Even though I like Gothic literature and vampire media in general. If you haven’t seen it already, I recommend checking out the Spanish language version Drácula that was also released in 1931.
Also, Universal Monsters: A Legacy of Horror. I read it earlier this year and I still need to finish watching the rest of the Universal Monsterverse.
Anyway, Fritz is kinda cute. And doesn’t eat live bugs. Even though he was super mean to the Monster. If I were there, I’d let him torment ME. 🤪 I have scoliosis so we could commiserate over our curved spines lol.

Halloween 2022 marathon: 27
Frankenstein (dir. James Whale, 1931)
My God, this movie. I love this movie so much. I know the general consensus is that Bride of Frankenstein is the superior movie and while it’s more sophisticated from a technological standpoint, the original film is the one that has my heart. The more “primitive” qualities are what endear it to me so, it somehow makes the resonant mythical qualities of the general Frankenstein story pop for me.
I’ve talked a lot about this movie over the years, so this post will really just be some ramblings about things I’ve noticed on this rewatch.
This movie has to have one of the best openings ever, across the board. First, you have that great meta introduction with Van Sloan warning the audience about how hardcore the movie’s going to be (”Well-- we WARNED you” >:) ). I want modern movies to do that lol. Then you have the wonderful opening titles, with the eyeballs on the background and that spooky music pounding away, getting you primed for the film to come.
And then there’s the opening graveyard scene-- the mourners, the starkness of the dirt hitting the coffin lid, Frankenstein and Fritz eagerly waiting for the cemetery to clear. It’s all so atmospheric and perfect.
And really, for an early talkie, this movie is incredibly sophisticated. Whale uses sound creatively, rather than just as a means of making noise or having the characters yap endlessly. He moves his camera through walls, making the sets seem so big and lavish. The occasional odd angle or composition exhibits the influence of German expressionism on the whole film.
Also, damn-- how can I not gush about Karloff? His acting here is perfect. The Monster is one of my favorite movie characters ever. I’ve had to hear fellow English majors complain about how this movie got rid of the book version’s exquisite philosophizing and verbal expression-- but this Monster is eloquent with his body language and far from a mere brute. When he reaches for the sunlight, you get the sense that he has longings beyond the material, that deep down, he might not be so unlike his “father” Frankenstein, who seeks to understand the universe. If only Frankenstein hadn’t given up so quickly on his creation....
Really, if only Henry had just fired Fritz, dammit!

i need someone to make spotify playlists for all the Dwight Frye characters. I would do it myself, but im uncultured and only really know Millionaires and Ayesha Erotica. I need a playlist for Wilmer Cook, Chick Lewis, Fritz, HERMANN GLEIB (my favorite boyo <3), and all the others I didn't name, possibly including his random small roles like Mr. Easton in Something To Sing About
if someone does this for me, my soul is yours🙏🙏🙏🙇🙇🙇
