The Frog Battle (Poetry)
Tumblr media
↑CM image
It's midnight now.
This time,
From drained paddy fields
Loud volume heard--
the frog battle
Was started.
From now on, here
It becomes a figure of lust of frogs.
A male frog fights over a female frog. My poetry teacher Nanao Sakaki also wrote a poem with this title. While thinking that it is nostalgic.
蛙合戦(かわずがっせん:詩)
今は夜中。
時ならず、
引水した水田から
聞えてくる大音量――
蛙合戦の
始まりだ。
今よりここは、
蛙の愛欲図となる。

will solace and his small touches with his friends.
he runs away from angry ares kids after a successful prank, his legs brushing against cecil's. he drags nyssa away from the fire by the back of her overrals, his fingers brushing against the back of her neck. he finds and puts on glasses for malcolm, when he searches for the pair. he brushes the hair away from mitchell's eyes when he tries to choose between two nail polishes. he lightly bumps heads with lou ellen while they laugh together over funny spells. he hugs drew's shoulders when she starts talking about her siblings. he gives a plate of food to annabeth when she locks herself up in cabin 3.
sometimes after, he caresses nico's scars on his hands. he ties alabaster's hair in a tiny ponytail during a stressful night.

I just clicked what my favorite adaptation/version of Cinderella is. I mean, I kind of knew back then, but I didn't realize it because at the time Cinderella wasn't a story I was really interested about, and I hadn't gone into the entire Cinderella rabbit hole. But if you ask me what my favorite Cinderella retelling is, it is definitively the story of Emberella as presented by Terry Pratchett in his "Witches Abroad" novel.
Yes it is kind of a parody and deconstruction of the Cinderella story (and a quite excellent one at that), but it also works very well as its own fairytale - plus it literaly predicted/foresaw Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" 18 YEARS before the movie was released.... and while slapping so hard the face of the Disney company.
Yeah, Emberella is my favorite version of Cinderella.

Random question, have you ever seen bullfrogs fighting in the wild before?
Tumblr media
It's honestly intriguing to see how far animals would go to mate.
These are Pyxicephalus adspersus, African bullfrogs, not to be confused with the American bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus. I have never been within their distribution range. But I have seen other species of frogs fighting, and it can be quite a sight to behold. Indeed, it is astonishing how far some animals go to mate. Personally, I think birds probably epitomise this among vertebrates, rather than frogs, because they are just so multimodal in their displays and behaviours.

The Battle of the Frogs and Mice (octavo) [Tiny Books Bang 2024]
Tumblr media
Title: The Battle of the Frogs and Mice, attributed to Pigres of Halicarnassus
The Batrachomyomachia or The Battle of the Frogs and Mice is an ancient Greek parody of the Homeric epics. The armies of the frogs and mice go to war over a misunderstanding, mighty deeds are performed by warriors on both sides, the gods become involved and great slaughter ensues before the resolution. There have been several translations from Chapman onwards; our version is in Draytonian stanzas by Jane Barlow in 1894, with splendid decorations by Francis D. Bedford.

A large creamware Frog Mug, c. 1798, printed in black with naval engagement scene entitled 'Lord Nelson engaging the Toulon Fleet off the Mouths of the Nile', the interior modelled with a large brown frog.
These practical joke mugs containing frogs or toads date from circa 1775 and continued to be popular until the end of the 19th century. An unsuspecting drinker would be surprised as he quaffed his beer to see a frog or toad emerging from the typically cloudy beverage of those days as it was fully consumed and the amphibian came into view, with predictable results. In some cases the creature would gurgle and spit at the drinker through a hole in its mouth as the vessel was tilted and the dregs consumed. Some larger examples had two or three handles and might contain several frogs/toads. Naval references are common on these mugs due to their common use in taverns frequented by sailors.

rereading orv closely is a very rewarding experience because you can see how genuinely tightly the narrative threads are woven throughout this very long action-heavy fantasy novel. even the arcs I think have a little less substance than others still further the themes and foreshadow plot in interesting ways and even the most cliche power fantasy moments still have shockingly complex things to say about the world and characters. nearly every scene, even the most rote battle scenes, has a lot of depth if you poke at it! its incredible. also its still really really fucking funny
