Nike's Ongoing Commitment to Athletes Extends Beyond the Summer of Sport

As the summer of sport comes to an end, Nike is reaffirming its dedication to supporting athletes in Paris and beyond. Through a series of forward-thinking initiatives, the brand is harnessing the power of movement to build a brighter, more inclusive future for all athletes.

At the heart of this commitment is the Coach the Dream: Future of Youth Sport Summit, held last week in Paris during the Paralympic Games. Hosted at Sport dans la Ville’s new campus, co-funded by Nike, the four-day summit brought together 35 partners and over 70 coaching experts and community leaders. The goal? To shape the future of inclusive youth sport and coaching.

Nike’s summit builds on its core belief that every young athlete deserves coaches who understand, support, and empower them to reach their fullest potential. The lessons learned from the summit will fuel new initiatives across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, fostering more inclusive coaching environments that encourage a lifelong love of sport.

"Coaching is Nike’s heritage and future, and we know the positive impact coaches have on youth,” said Vanessa Garcia-Brito, VP and Chief Impact Officer at NIKE, Inc. “Together with our community partners, we’re powering the future of youth sport to improve sport access and experience. The world needs more coaches who reflect the kids and communities they serve, and we’re excited to continue investing in this work in Paris and around the world.”

In addition to shaping coaching practices, Nike is working to increase girls’ participation in sports through its Team Go Girls initiative, launched in collaboration with France’s National Sports Agency. Together, they published a playbook aimed at breaking down barriers to sport for girls. Based on data from 140 digital challenges and 35 community activities engaging 1,250 girls in Paris and Pantin, the playbook is set to expand girls-only programs in 50 French cities this fall.

Nike is also deepening its work with the Olympic Refuge Foundation’s Paris-based program, Terrains d’Avenir, which focuses on increasing sport access for refugees. This initiative provides local sport clubs with the tools and training to create safe, inclusive environments for displaced individuals, with a particular emphasis on helping girls and young women in the greater Paris area find their place in sport.

Expanding its impact beyond youth athletes, Nike has also introduced GameOn, a new career program designed to develop the next generation of sports professionals, including athletes with disabilities. Launched with support from the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, the program offers a one-year work experience at Nike’s World Headquarters, helping athletes of all backgrounds gain valuable skills and career development opportunities.

Nike’s recent initiatives, launched during the 2024 Games, underscore the brand’s unwavering commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive athletic landscape. Whether through empowering youth, fostering inclusivity, or developing career opportunities, Nike is shaping a future where every athlete—regardless of ability, background, or aspiration—can thrive.

Bela Lugosi Is (Un)Dead

Los Angeles is the home of entertainment, the beach, and even some specters that haunt some places that might make you feel like you’re in a classic horror movie. The place is known as the “City of Angels” might be filled to the brim with the ghosts of ages past. Especially those who have once graced the silver screen or even your TV screen at home. 

Today, the city is best known for the bright lights, big stars, and the Walk of Fame that pays homage to many who have made a name for themselves in entertainment. But is there a spirit of some celebrity hanging around their star?

We may not be able to answer that question definitively, but what we can do is point you to the places that might.

With that, join us as we take a look at the Top 10 Most Haunted Places in Los Angeles.

10. Hollywood Forever Cemetery

First on the list is the cemetery that is the final resting place of many celebrities. With names like Mal Blanc, Fay Wray, Gary Golden and more, a stroll can quickly turn into a game of “you name it, they’re probably here”.

One of the known hauntings that most visitors have recounted was the sound of a woman crying by the lake that is located on the grounds of the cemetery. Some have said that the woman may have been that of Virginia Rappe. Rappe was a silent film actress who passed away in 1921. Her death was said to be linked to a fellow film actor named Fatty Arbuckle. While Arbuckle was cleared in the connection of her death, some historians beg to differ.

Many visitors have often found figures and apparitions milling around the cemetery grounds, with most of them wearing clothing from the periods of when they were still alive. So it may not be unusual to see a specter dressed like they were from the 1950s.

9. Hollywood Pantages Theatre

When charmed businessman Howard Hughes owned the infamous Pantages Theatre, he built a door that connected his office directly to one of the theater balconies, where he would go to think in the dark. Hughes’s ghost is a notorious workaholic, and is said to be seen in his former office on the second floor.

According to legend, during the restoration in 2000, people said they saw a man stepping off the balcony, walking along the scaffolding, and standing over a worker to inspect his work. When the guy turned to ask the man what he wanted, the figure vanished.

The Pantages is also host to a female presence who died during a show in 1932. Apparently, during a cast recording, microphones were set up in the theater and they heard someone singing in the mic when no one was on stage. Some say the woman who died was an aspiring singer who’s living out her unrealized dreams of performing at the Pantages.

8. The Culver Studios

The studio complex where such legendary Tinseltown films as Gone with the Wind and Raging Bull were filmed was built in 1918 by silent movie pioneer Thomas Ince. Ince died in 1924, after falling ill on newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst’s yacht during a star-studded cruise and dinner, celebrating Ince’s 42nd birthday. While the official cause of death was listed as heart failure, legend has it that Ince was actually shot and killed by a jealous Hearst, who was supposedly aiming at (and missed) Charlie Chaplin, who had eyes for Hearst’s mistress Marion Davies. Some say Ince’s ghost still shows up for work at his beloved former studio, and can be seen and heard walking through walls and criticizing management.

7. The Queen Mary

Famous for its Halloween event, Dark Harbor, but the Queen Mary in Long Beach is certifiably haunted according to the countless visitors who claim to hear voices and rattling chains during tours and overnight stays. The Queen Mary certainly has a past that’s ripe for modern-day hauntings. She started life as a luxury liner, setting forth on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, in 1937, and hosting everyone from Bob Hope to Winston Churchill. But when WWII began, the Queen Mary was drafted into service as a ferry ship, carrying thousands of troops into battle areas. The fancy lady was stripped of her chic facade, painted a camo grey and dubbed the “Grey Ghost.” After years of service in war, and at her majesty’s whim, the Queen Mary was eventually sold to a tour operator and sent to retirement in Long Beach, where she’s been a floating hotel and event spot since 1967. According to the late psychic and ghost hunter, Peter James, who led tours around the Queen Mary, almost all areas of the ship including the second class pool deck and engine room 13 are known to be haunted.

6. The Haunter Forest and Cobb Estate

Avid hikers will recognize this spot as the Sam Merrill trailhead, “a quiet refuge from people and wild life forever”—so reads the dedication on the cobblestone gate of the Cobb Estate. But to ghost hunters, it’s the Haunted Forest.

The sparse forest didn’t seem so haunted until the 1950s, when the Marx Brothers purchased the land and temporarily saved the dilapidated mansion from destruction—in the process turning it into a favorite haunt for squatters and ne’er-do-wells.

Today, you’re more likely to find curious teens at night wandering around what’s left of the house’s foundation; though ghost sightings are non-specific, many report ghostly noises on the surviving staircase and the feeling that they’re being watched in the dimly lit forest.

5. Griffith Park Old Zoo

A lot of people who may have heard or seen spirits will describe them as a man, woman, or child. But not every spirit might be of human form. The Old Zoo located in Griffith Park might be such a place where the spirits of even unhappy captive animals may be heard or possibly seen at night. By the daytime, it’s a really popular picnic area where friends and family can hang out and enjoy the day.

This was the first-ever zoo to be established in Los Angeles. And it was home to many lions, bears, monkeys, and several other animals. If you want to check out a place at night they might not be a walk in the park for the faint-hearted, this could be something to check out.

4. “The Entity” House

The Entity House might just look like some ordinary house located smack dab in the middle of suburban Los Angeles. But the home is known for having a story that was published into a book (and later adapted into a horror film that earned the house its name). The house was believed to the be sight of a series of hauntings with one victim recalling so many stories of each haunted happening.

While the story of “The Entity” may seem to live on forever in books and movies, the home may still have a story of its own to tell of things never been told. Are there spirits still haunting the home? What other stories that have yet to be heard that may have never been revealed in either the book or film adaptation? We will discuss the history of the home and the stories that have given it the reputation of being one of the most haunted places in all of Los Angeles.

3. Beverly Hills Bermuda Triangle

Even in the trendy neighborhood of Beverly Hills, there’s always a place that has some kind of strange presence. This part of 90210 is no stranger to some weird things. Billionaire and aviation enthusiast Howard Hughes was said to have crashed into a few homes in the neighborhood. Fortunately, Hughes survived the crash. 

However, this area was also the site of a couple of high-profile homicides. One of them was the murder of Bugsy Siegel in 1947. Nearly sixty years later, a Hollywood publicist named Ronni Chasen was shot while driving in her car. She later died shortly afterward when she collided into a light pole as she attempted to flee the scene.

Over the years, some celebrities who came across this part of LA often found themselves in weird, if not, near-death situations. One such case was when musician Jan Berry of the 1960s group Jan and Dean was nearly killed in a car crash while driving and turning a sharp curve.

2. Hotel Roosevelt

Legend has it that the ghost of Marilyn Monroe still haunts her old stomping grounds. Until a few years ago, there was a famous mirror in the lobby where people would take pictures and claim they could see Marilyn’s reflection above them. The full-length mirror that once hung in Monroe’s poolside suite, and then in the lobby where it has since been removed. On the ninth floor, you can hear the late actor Montgomery Clift—who lived in suite 928 for three months while filming From Here to Eternity—practicing on his trumpet. During their stay, many guests have asked the hotel staff to tell the guest in the next room to stop playing in the middle of the night, only for the room to turn out to be vacat. What’s more? Lights and faucets are known to turn on and off on their own and the switchboard gets calls from vacant rooms.

1. Bela Lugosi’s Apartment

Bela Lugosi was another one of the acting greats in the horror film genre. For those that don’t know, his famous role was Dracula. It was known that Lugosi would always visit his favorite cigar shop every day on Hollywood Boulevard. When he died, the mortician could not have told a crazy story like the one of what happened while driving Lugosi’s body to the funeral home.

The funeral procession was supposed to go towards the cemetery in Culver City. However, the horses that were carrying the coffin had started to fight the driver. The driver wanted the horses to go right, however, the horses drew the hearse to the left. The horses went through oncoming traffic and down the boulevard. Turns out, Lugosi had gone daily to buy cigars and read the newspaper on Hollywood Boulevard. The horses stopped right in front of the shop that he frequented. 

Some have said that Lugosi’s spirit may have played a role in that apparent incident. Possibly as a way to say goodbye to the place that he called home for much of his acting career. But ultimately,  no one would ever be able to explain what really happened.

To take a stronger stance against the construction of the Kaliwa Dam

Why is this important?

The Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) for the Kaliwa Dam was wrongfully issued by the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR) for the affected areas, namely the Sierra Madre mountain range are biodiversity hotspots, having been designated as a Natural wildlife park sanctuary and game refuge, and has also been accredited by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a Category V Protected Landscape/Seascape, therefore rendering it the credentials as a significantly important area of land. The area that will be affected by the construction of the dam, consists of 201 species of mammals, 556 species of birds, 85 species of amphibians, and 252 species of reptiles, half of which are endemic to the are and already threatened, not to mention the flora and fauna that also reside within the area. Studies have also revealed that 96 endemic species, who are already very threatened by human activity, will be directly impacted by the construction of the dam. These facts should have made clear why the conservation of this area is critical to the overall health of the Philippine environment and why the ECC was wrongfully issued by the DENR.

As stated in the Philippine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation's (Philbio) website, its mission is to "To enhance and enable the conservation of the Philippines unique and threatened environment, biodiversity and natural resources into perpetuity". And so the issue of the affected areas by the Kaliwa dam, should fall under Philbio's mission, for it is under threat and its loss will have huge implications on the country's biodiversity. Its vision also states "The long-term conservation of the Philippines’ native and endemic wildlife and natural habitats for the benefit of future generations of all peoples who may inhabit and share the natural resources of the country.", and speaking on behalf of the youth and the future generations to come, many of us do abide and agree with the stated vision and so it is expected of the organization to voice out a larger concern and lobby against the construction of the dam for it is a threat to the environmental security of the youth and future generations.

The History of Zombie Road

Zombie Road has quite a reputation as a place where shadowy figures and other non human entities have long been reported.

Gregory Myers of the Paranormal Task Force presents this piece on the history and deaths of one of the most haunted locations in the United States.

Within the urban sprawl of St. Louis lies a remote area called “Zombie Road”. Urban Legend tells a variety of eerie tales which include being host to ritualistic and occult practices which spawned inhuman and demonic entities while other tales tell of those who met their peculiar demise and still roam this desolate road in the afterlife.

“Zombie Road”, real name “Lawler Ford Road” is about 2 miles long through a valley of forest oak land hills and ends near the Meramec River in the Glencoe, MO area where it meets the newly established “Al Foster” trail.

The history of this area goes back to ancient Native American times where this was one of the few pathways cut by nature over the centuries through the bluffs to the Meramec River area just beyond them. It is believed that travelling ancient Native Americans used this pathway for foot travel and also quarried flint here for the making of various tools and weapons.

In the early 1800’s a Ferry (boat) was operated at the bottom area of this passage at times where a ford was located in the river for settlers and travellers to cross the Meramec River to the other side where the Lewis family owned much of the land. The origin of the road name is unknown to historians even today.

Ninian Hamilton a settler from Kentucky was the first settler to occupy and own land in this area in 1803. After his death in 1856, James E. Yeatman a prominent St. Louis citizen, a founder of the Mercantile Library and president of the Merchants Bank acquired the large parcel of land that Mr. Hamilton settled and owned.

The Pacific Railroad completed their railroad line from St. Louis to Pacific along the Meramec River in this area in the 1850’s. Della Hamilton the wife of Henry McCullough, who was Justice of the Peace for about thirty years and Judge of the County Court from 1849 to 1852, was struck and killed by a train in this area in 1876.

The first large scale gravel operations on the Meramec River began at what would become Yeatman junction in this area. Gravel was taken from the Meramec River and moved on rail cars into St. Louis. The first record of this operation is in the mid-1850’s. Later, steam dredges were used, to be supplanted by diesel or gasoline dredges in extracting gravel from the channel and from artificial lakes dug into the banks. This continued until the 1970’s.

From about 1900 until about 1945, Glencoe and this area was one of the resort communities of the Meramec River’s clubhouse era. Many of the homes were summer clubhouses, later converted to year round residences then lost to the great local floods of the 1990’s.

Some say this is called Zombie Road because the railroad workers who once worked here rise from their graves at times to roam about. Some insist that they have heard old time music, seen anomalous moving lights and other ghostly sightings from that forgotten era. Another tale tells of a patient nicknamed “Zombie” who escaped from a nearby mental facility never to be seen again. His blood soaked gown was later found lying upon the old road later named after him.

Other tales include one of an original settler who met their demise upon the railroad tracks. Another includes a pioneer who lost his wife in a poker game then went back to his homestead and took his own life. Many still report seeing these lonely spirits even today.

During the age of Prohibition a nearby town housed speak-easies and the summer homes of well known gangsters. Tales tell of individuals who were dealt a bad hand by such public enemies resulting in their permanent placement within the ground or bordering river to never be seen again.

The bordering river has tragically delivered many to the other side through the years. Children and adults alike have taken their last living breath within its dangerous waters before being found washed up on its shores. Even during this new millennium, several children met their demise one day within its banks.

The railroad still shows “Death hath no mercy” as many have met their final fate upon its tracks. Local lifelong residents can still remember multitudes of tragic occurrences dating back to the 1950’s. One of these occurred in the 1970’s when two teens were struck by an oncoming train. Some of the local residents were used in search parties to find the body parts scattered about the area.

During the 1990’s a mother and her five year old child were crossing a bridge when an oncoming train met them. The mother’s last action was pushing her five year old child off the bridge. The engineer was able to stop the train and save the child. Although the mother died, this is still one of the happiest endings to a story this area will provide.

More recent past has seen this area become refuge for those wanting privacy to practice the occult and other rituals. Who can really know what true doorways to the darkness or unknown were opened here.

During the 1960’s a couple in their late teens were on top of the bluffs overlooking the road below.The male somehow lost footing and during the fall caught his face in a fork of a small tree growing out from the side of the bluff. His face and scalp remained while the rest of him fell to his death upon the road below. Others have also met their demise from the high bluffs above.

The area has also seen its share of suicides and murders. In the 1970’s a hunter stumbled across a car still running at the end the road. Closer inspection revealed a hose running from the exhaust pipe to the inside of the car with the driver slumped over the steering wheel.

One can agree that there is no lack of legends or tragedies surrounding this area which can explain the bizarre and eerie encounters of those who visit. I was one who became truly intrigued and attracted by such lore and was determined to either prove or disprove the Urban Legends surrounding it.

Missouri Paranormal Research (now a division of Paranormal Task Force, Inc.), the paranormal investigative team I belong to, investigated this area on several occasions. Our visits converted many true skeptics into true believers of the paranormal. I was one of those the first time and even remarked “This was going to be like Winnie the Pooh looking for a ghost in 100 Acre Woods” prior to descending onto the old road.

Within an hour several people observed a human sized shadow figure as it descended upon them from a small bluff nearby. It then ran onto the road, stopped, then disappeared into the darkness of the night. Throughout the night others heard unexplained voices, were touched by the unseen and witnessed the unexplained. This was one night that everyone could conclude that indeed some Urban Legends actually are real!

Heya everyone, Mage of Light Nick Card here. The end of the game jam is approaching and the dungeon crashers have been p busy lately. I hope I manage to get through all of the details here.

Bug'Em no more!

Earlier this week, Warlock of Time and pokemon researcher Coleman took a trip to an undisclosed desert region somewhere on starter planet. While there, he reportedly discovered a suspicious location with far less life than usual. This was identified as a candidate for a voidco dungeon, being ran by Bug'em inc. as their own apparent base of operations.

A few days later, a party was assembled and they raided the secret hideout together. In addition to Coleman, Galar Champion Brae Emit, Heir of Breath June Egbert, Desertian President Witch of Time Katyleen Kitten, and Rogue of Heart Charles were present on this operation. They apparently encountered The Director, a terrifyingly tall and imposing figure covered in expressive moths. It was rather brief, and they apparently absconded soon after sending out a pair of moth pokemon for a brief flourish. June and her butterfree reportedly whirwinded them out of the picture, effectively ending the battle with minimal injury. After the door was opened, the party descended down a long tunnel road with a pair of golf carts, and soon discovered the site of bug'em's most heinous of operations. They had reportedly captured a great deal of pokemon and put them in absolutely deplorable conditions. AI assistant *DeusEx successfully hacked the comperterized cages of the pokemon, and they soon went in a frenzy against a device that was broadcasting a signal similar to the one used in previous bug'em operations. The party entered the master ball shaped dome facility and faced off against a trio of genesects, as well as the Parkers. The Parkers are a stack of rather emotive spiders that have been allegedly driving bug'em operations so far. They also had a combined pokemon team that apparently utilizes a damp rock rainy day strategy. There was also a genesect-shaped mechsuit involved. It is at this point that the altercation that took place was too chaotic to sort out entirely in this article.

The end result was 4 out of 5 of the parkers being detained in Desertia jail, and the 4th one, who had worn the mechsuit, was declared dead after the battle. The pokemon were confiscated, rescued, and sent to Unity Ranch to be rehabilitated there. The dungeon core, located near the top of the dome facility, was detonated with gratuitous amounts of C4 after evacuating everyone that could be found from the underground hideout. A great number of consorts employed by them were rescued and subsequently given a sentence of a number of hours of community service for cooperating with the proceeding investigation, rather than any sort of longer sentence. A small percentage of the consorts absconded from the scene and are likely at large.

As of now, investigations, medical paperwork, and various other legal details are being performed. There is currently a great need for volunteers at Unity Ranch to care for the pokemon recovered from the Bug'Em desert operation. In other news, Charles and Brae seem to have gone missing, neither one able to be contacted through public channels and are both missing from their respective homes.

Kids Get “Hooked” on “Reel” Nature in the Portland Metro Area

Novice and experienced anglers alike made their way to Henry Hagg Lake in Gaston, OR on June 2nd and 3rd for the 29th annual I’m Hooked Youth and Family Fishing Weekend. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) and I’m Hooked, Inc. co-hosted the event, which brought over 1,000 youth and their families out to the lake to fish — including the largest single-day turnout in the history of the event. That day, 24 volunteer boater-anglers took over 450 kids out on the lake for 1-1/2 hour fishing excursion. Families also took advantage of the opportunity to fish from the bank.

In addition to building fishing skills, the USFWS/I’m Hooked collaboration has a focus on conservation and positive youth development. Partnership at all levels is the key to carrying out the Hagg Lake event and organizations like Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Oregon Hunters Association as well as businesses like Home Depot and local fishing shops contributed to make this year the most successful yet. 

USFWS participation came from staff and volunteers from Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. A new USFWS/I’m Hooked outreach trailer debuted at the event, serving as the base station for a series of skill-building and educational activities, including a practice casting station, a salmon life cycle course, and a macroinvertebrate game. By hosting the practice casting station, a mandatory stop for those who aimed to fish on the lake, the USFWS made contact with a vast majority of the event’s participants
