About Takasugi's abuse
The other day (totally not months ago) we were talking with @sakukaguxxi about how Takasugi’s relationship with his bio family is overlooked in character analyses. While Sorachi didn’t delve deeply into this aspect, which isn’t inherently bad, I think it’s important for understanding why he turned out the way he did.
Tumblr media
We know two canon facts: (1) he comes from a low-class samurai family, and (2) he’s the firstborn. This suggests his family held noble status but struggled to maintain it. As a result, they relied on him to preserve their standing, enrolling him in a military academy and being strict about how he interacted with higher-status classmates.
To enforce this, they employed harsh punishments, such as starving him, tying him to a tree and leaving him in the cold for hours, or physically hitting him with enough force to draw blood when he was just a child (~10 yo?). On top of this, the threat of disownment loomed over him constantly.
These actions indicate they didn’t see him as a person or a child worth protecting but rather as a means to an end (maintaining their status). Consequently, he grew up devaluing himself and lacking the tools to express love in a healthy way. This likely explains why he became so attached to Shouyo and Gintoki.
For Shouyo, he was probably the first and only parental figure to treat Takasugi with genuine respect. While he disciplined him, it was always treated lightly and without causing him any real harm, unlike his bio father. Shouyo provided basic necessities like food, warmth, care, but also a sense of belonging.
Regarding Gintoki, a lot can and has been said. On this topic, he may’ve downplayed or misunderstood the extent of Takasugi’s abuse. This can be inferred from his comments before meeting Sakamoto, where he jokingly implies that Takasugi is still a “daddy’s kid,” even though he knows Takasugi was disowned.
Tumblr media
This is interesting because Takasugi mentions being disowned long ago, yet for Gintoki, it doesn’t seem so distant. The timeline is unclear, perhaps Takasugi’s father disowned him during childhood, or maybe he tried to bring him back for years until eventually giving up when Takasugi was a teenager and considered irredeemable.
Moving into non-canon territory, if we consider Takasugi Shinsaku (the historical figure) for inspiration, some gaps can be filled. He was the firstborn, had three sisters, and bore the responsibilities of being the sole male heir. His father reportedly tried to steer him away from radicalism, even arranging a marriage for him to settle down.
This aligns with a seemingly banal joke, that Takasugi owned The Portopia Serial Murder Case and a console to play it (a Famicom?). At first glance, it’s odd that an abusive family would buy him such things. However, abusive individuals aren’t cruel all the time. They can oscillate between being harsh and showing kindness, creating a cycle of manipulation and gaslighting. This could explain why it took Takasugi some time to leave, perhaps he realized they needed him more than he needed them or that they would never truly love him.
The lasting effects on him are evident. Takasugi struggles to express himself in ways that don’t involve violence, and saw himself as disposable, with no strong sense of self. He fought for Shouyo’s freedom, for Gintoki’s tears, and later, for Gintoki’s happiness. While these were his choices, they were never about himself, they were for the people he held close to his heart.

Someone PLEASE get Denji and Asa both an adult who cares about them and wants to protect them in their lives ASAP! They need a guardian! It can be the same person idc but they need someone! Like, I know this story doesn’t have the surrogate father/brother figure anymore (rip Aki-47) but we need a whole new character who is like “Um?? You are a childrens? Wtf I’m gonna make of you dinner and pay the rent I need to speak to the manager of this manga.” Cross referencing but like someone transfer Gintoki, Nanami, Kazuki (Buddy daddies) Shion, Reigen idk any of the dad figures to take care of these two!

"Katsura is a far right reactionary."
Did you even watch the show? The man literally lives in a colonial regime which subjugated and dis-empowered his people, survived a war which he only fought to get his teacher back, because the Bakufu arrested and killed off any anti-Bakufu dissidents, no matter how minor, to appease the Amanto overlords (Shouyou - at least publicly, was arrested for "teaching sword and pen" as it might "foment rebellion"). And in the end, Katsura lost the war and countless comrades, Shouyou was executed in front of him by his best friend, samurai were stripped of their swords and rendered jobless and penniless, and any further resistance was brutally crushed and they were forced to go underground. It was a genocide.
Even in the manga’s opening chapters, it’s clear that the Amanto elite hold absolute power, while ordinary humans are left powerless and disenfranchised. Shinpachi is abused by his boss for daring to still have honor as a samurai, and his boss is subservient to Amanto ambassadors who purposefully make Shinpachi trip to get him in trouble and freely mock humans. Otae's dojo struggles so badly she's almost enslaved by the Amanto pimp who her father was indebted to to keep the dojo afloat, who uses floating brothels to escape the reach of the law. She's forced to become a cabaret hostess to make ends meet.
Gintoki says that aliens do whatever they want, hinting at the legal immunity they have (which was also the case in pre-Meiji Restoration era Japan for westerners). Hasegawa recruits the Yorozuya to find Prince Hata's missing pet because Earth depends on Hata's finances and they have to kowtow to him, almost lets Gintoki get eaten to "save the Earth", and loses his job and is ordered to commit seppuku after he punches Hata when he finally prioritizes lives over a spoiled prince. Gintoki lives in a crumbling wooden house, while Amanto elite live in expensive high rise buildings, which get taller and more expensive the closer you get to the terminal, the ultimate symbol of colonization (it's used to literally suck the Earth dry of Altana!) Etc, etc. It's not subtle.
And even if (early) Katsura uses methods like bombing embassies and uses slogans like, "Expel the Amanto", it's not a case of Katsura hating foreigners because he wants to preserve Japan's racial "purity", it’s a traumatized, disenfranchised man trying to dismantle the imperialist structures that colonized Earth, stole its sovereignty, and destroyed everything he knew. You think real life anti-colonial revolutionaries didn't use similarly purposely incendiary slogans or target colonialist symbols of power? Vietnam for example, used rallying cries like "Fight to drive out the Americans, fight to overthrow the puppets", during the Vietnam war.
It's also worth noting that even from the start, at his most extreme, no one acts like Katsura would harm or kill Amanto simply for being well, Amanto, nor does he. Sakamoto sends him Elizabeth as a pet, Gintoki doesn't hide Kagura's true identity from him, Katsura is seen frequenting Otose's snack bar, where Catherine works, an illegal immigrant Amanto, Katsura interacts with Amanto normally in many early episodes (eg. with Prince Hata and his butler in the Okama arc and with a pig faced Amanto when he goes to rent a video). He targets systems of power, not individual Amanto.
He clings to his identity of being a samurai because it's what the Amanto imperialists took away from him when they conquered Edo, taking away the only method of resistance - not because of a reactionary belief in an idealized past. He doesn't believe in samurai superiority or enforce class divisions, he works with people of all classes and is shown to be aware of the class system even as a child - like when he shunned his prestigious military school which he won a scholarship to attend because it was full of spoiled nobles.
Finally, at the end, Katsura literally abolishes hereditary rule, says every citizen is a "small king", introduces revolutionary reforms (according to Matsudaira), writes a constitution, and steps down from power so the new generation - Soyo - can take over. The irony of the "Donald Zurump" persona is just that - it looks like Sorachi is mocking Katsura as a right wing dictator, but it's completely satirical - it's actually his opponents who are the true reactionaries (The chapter includes assassins who shout phrases like "You crook, warping our country’s history", "Take this divine punishment!" and who call him a "Traitor(s) encroaching on our country" - loaded nationalist and reactionary language).
As Matsudaira explains later, Katsura became Donald Zurump because, after the war and the fall of the Bakufu, the country was in a fragile state and they knew the people would not readily accept radical reforms, so Katsura was using himself as a lightning rod for angry rebels while he lay the groundwork for a new country. Soyo also explains that the people still cling to old customs and gendered limitations still exist, so Katsura had to destroy the existing power systems first before she could take over. Which he did. The plan was for Katsura to fake his death at the hands of Sougo (the whole Shinsengumi were in on the "Donald Zurump" thing) and pass power onto Soyo, but Takasugi...complicated that. Though it still worked out.
So...no. Not a far right reactionary. Not even close.

Round 5, Match 2: Gintoki Sakata vs. Kim Dokja
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Submitted kids:
Gintoki Sakata: Kagura and Shinpachi Shimura, his own de aged mentor Shouyou, Hashida Kanshichirou, and Seita
Kim Dokja: Lee Gilyoung and Shin Yoosung are the commonly accepted ones but you can also make a case for Lee Jihye and Biyoo
Propaganda under the cut!
Gintoki Sakata:
1. “Gintoki is introduced to us as a depressed twenty seven year old dealing with ptsd who first adopts Shinpachi after protecting him from Amanto (aliens, who have somewhat taken over earth) who were harassing him, which led to Shinpachi losing his job, and Gintoki having to help him rescue his sister Otae from the family’s debtors. Shinpachi comes to work for Gintoki as Odd Jobs, soon joined by Kagura (an amanto herself with super strength who was working as part of gang prior to Shinpachi and Gintoki helping her leave) Kagura leaves in his house and later Gintoki allows her to get a pet dog. It’s made clear that these three are a family and more than a few episodes make it clear that Kagura seems Gintoki as her earth father (her bio dad, the strongest man in the universe, goes around the galaxy fighting monsters) and Shinpachi feels a familial connection to him as well. There’s also Hashida, a baby who looks a lot like Gintoki, whom Gintoki takes care of when the custody battle over Hashida becomes an actual battle. This includes drinking together, tying the baby to his back while fighting his way to Hashida’s mom, and Hashida crying when Gintoki leaves, after promising they’ll share a drink when Hashida is older. In a similar vein is Seita, a street kid who tries to pickpocket Gintoki but gets robbed in return and ends up working for Gintoki’s landlady (Gintoki’s own adoptive mother) and being taken care of by her and the odd jobs family as a whole, before Gintoki discovers Seita’s mother is Hinowa, the Sun of Yoshiwara and its highest ranking courtesan, and fights Housen, a crime lord who fought Kagura’s father for three days and nights until they considered it a draw, and kills him, just so Seita and Hinowa can reunite. During the timeskip late in the series, we discover after seemingly defeating the Big Bad Utsuro (an immortal who formerly was Gintoki’s adoptive father and teacher Shouyou) Gintoki spent two years raising the reincarnated Shouyou as a baby, before being given his heart to prevent Utsuro’s followers from taking it. These are just the most notable examples, pretty much any character younger than Gintoki gets taken care of or helped by him in a way, including Kagura’s older brother, temporary member of Odd Jobs Pirako, and even to an extent youngest Shinsengumi member Okita Sougo. Gintoki is positioned as acting as the same adoptive parent role as his own adopters (Shouyou and his landlady Otose) are, taking on similar burdens and making, or trying to make) similar sacrifices as well. He can be really soft with kids at times, and has at least once carried Kagura and Shinpachi away from a fight on his back.”
2. “#hell adopt your unorphaned kid hell adopt your dad hell adopt his own deaged mentor!!!”
Kim Dokja:
1. “In the first scenario (where you have to murder something alive) his first priority is to make sure Gilyoung makes it out alive (by giving him the grasshopper before letting others know about it), and when the future version of Yoosung (41st round) is going to cause havoc his first plan is to basically the past (his present) version of her so they would have her on her side (he takes her in as his incarnation- if that isn’t an adoption idk what is); Biyoo is literally the soul of 41st Yoosung that he WENT THROUGH AN UNDERWORLD TRIAL to get her back and she is legally his child. Lee Jihye is more like the older sister-teenager of the group be she’s still adopted by association and Han Donghoon is a kid who was hypnotized and exploited by the ‘prophets’ and Kim Dokja saved him and became someone he trusts in- which is basically adopting. Mia is YJH’s little sister but with the family dynamic all of KimCom has she’s basically adopted too. This man is someone who believes the worst in himself but gives all these kids someone they need and in return they are the family he’s never had.”
2. “He saved Lee Gilyoung on the subway when he was orphaned at the time the apocalypse started even when he didn't need to and kept him by his side and fed him at his own expense and believed in him and taught him to be strong when no one else had really done that for Lee Gilyoung before.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD (pretty vague):
Shin Yoosung was a character in the world of the apocalypse that occured (long story, won't explain here lol) and she was supposed to be destined to become a monster that would destroy Seoul and the two people other than Kim Dokja who knew this wanted to kill her when they found her to prevent her from becoming that but Kim Dokja refused to kill her and physically stood to protect her and then he later became her sponsor (uhhh it's a whole thing in-universe but basically pledged to back her and help her ig) and the stigma (a special power thing that can be gained through a sponsor) he gave her was based in him protecting everyone in their group and his love for all of them.
Both Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung are extremely attached to Kim Dokja and have on at least one canon occasion slept clinging to either side of him.
LESS MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD (though not terrible ig and still mostly vague at least):
Biyoo is. well she's Shin Yoosung actually but also not. So basically y'know that monster future Shin Yoosung was destined to become? so that monster version of her from a different timeline was sent backwards and sideways in time (idk how else to describe it jskdfs) and nearly did destroy Seoul as prophesied but Kim Dokja tried to save her—and he nearly did but then a shitty dokkaebi (they're like admin streamer people. idk would take a while to explain) did a shitty thing and forced her to be 'evil' and then she had to be killed ;-; but Kim Dokja promised to get revenge for her and after that he went and beat up the asshole dokkaebi who did that so badly that he gained a legendary Story. And then he traveled to the Underworld at risk of his own life to retrieve her soul and put that into a dokkaebi egg that he personally hatched. And she lost her memories for the most part but could still sense a bit what he'd done for her :') and so yeah she became Biyoo and is somehow both adopted and originally parented(?? idk saying biologically is. doesn't feel quite right lol) by him.”
3. “Bro is THE DAD of the group”
4. “Adopted his kids so hard that they’d do like anything for him they love him so much”

Beside Vin and Mary, is there anyone that is also close with Otsuyu?
Also love your arts 😍😍
First off thank you so much ✨ really appreciate it ;w;
This could be an easy question to just count people but I'm always yapping so this will get long 👁👄👁
The Canon Cast
Having a close friendship to Otsuyu is a difficult to achieve tbh! She's super perceptive due to trauma and doesn't to well with people that focus on shallow values. This is one reason why she appreciates Mary Kim and later even Vin Jin - the latter only after his "two lackeys" left his side! (they're last seen - outside of a flashback - during troubled transfer after Vin has been beat by Logan) With Mary and Vin, you just know where you're at.
She herself can be considered blunt, cheeky or even rude, because she's not afraid to speak her mind or challenging people. But this is also a good thing for her so she can filter people she actually wants to befriend from those that will cause her headaches.
Personally, she adores Duke and often approached him to talk about studies or raps. He helped her lots with Korean writing, since she's still having a hard time adjusting to a different language. Her ways of helping him during the time Vin Jins bullying was the worst just wasn't very loud. She has the feeling if she's protecting him loudly it will not fire back at her but further against Duke. So, instead of calling Vin and his lackeys out, she rather removes the writing about Duke's Grandmothers food stall on the blackboard or tries to lead the bullies' attention to her by proposing another rap-batte. After he's a trainee at PTJ-Entertainment their friendship mellows down though, since he's become very busy and - as I assume - is even spoken free of school to focus on his career rather often (?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course Vin complained about that picture but Otsuyu knows - she knooooooows
She's decent with a lot of people of the canon main cast but that's about it from the people she is or was close with.
There are many characters she has strong (positive i.e. Sally Park and negative i.e. Logan Lee) opinions about and even more characters I WISH she could get to know (like Jerry for example) but I just don't see any possible connection in her timeline ;w;
I do think that she's going to get closer to other people in future if there's any space for her around Allied or if I consider her taking space as part of this crew, like being legit "their lifeline" because of how she acts in combat situations. Especially since she's getting tutored about the using human bodys' vital points against enemies and in favour of her allies (like acupuncture) to boost their abilities by her cousin post her own arc. (which is still a WIP)
Now to OCs!
While the canon cast has MUCH to be desired for her, there are also a few OCs she's having a real connection with.
Of course she's super close with her guardians: her cousin Akemi Shibusawa and Kurage Iwashita (who belongs to @mandarinasart ) They've been with her ever since she had to leave japan and came to Korea. At first Akemi only saw Otsuyu as a protection job, since Otsuyus father also pays her to take care of the girl, but over time they bonded a lot. She's become quite the maternal figure that Otsuyu needs, while Kurage is the paternal counterpart.
Tumblr media
Artwork by @mandarinasart
And even though Kurage takes over the paternal part in Korea, she's still very close with her father and her brother - who she both misses a lot and videocalls pretty much every weekend.
Now she's also good friends with Sameko Iwashita and Gintoki Ishiwaka (both by @mandarinasart ) who were part of the Athlete dept in J high! Sameko really put in the effort to befriend the japanese, even though Otsuyu was very sus of her friendliness. Though as soon as they became good friends, introducing Otsuyu to Gintoki was far more natural, because Gintoki and Otsuyu both like to tease Sameko a lot.
Tumblr media
Other than that, she's not particularly close with Grimm or Mi-Yeon but she thinks they're amazing - even though she's left in the dark WHAT they actually work for Akemi. She thinks that Akemi is leading some sort of consulting business, which is specialized in tech - since Grimm is a software specialist and Mi-Yeon hardware. It will take lots of time until she gets that they're actually an information-broking-network and Grimm pretty much works as spy and Mi-Yeon supplies them with gadgets.
Tumblr media
Last but not least, there are the "useless old men" as she calls them. They do not have a face, yet, but they're men ranging from 40-70+ that reside in her hotel and often lounge in the lobby. She's listening to the most ridiculous conversations (like that | YT link | 7 1/2 minutes long) and sometimes even joins them to bicker along.

may i ask if gintae can be considered as parallel characters? since they share a lot of similarities in values and all. what do you think? i love parallel characters as much as narrative foils
I always thought they were parallels as well as foils to each other
GinTae as Parallels
Roles in community and family
Both are in wish-granting or dream-fulfilling kind of business (otae in hospitality/hostess sector and Gintoki as an Odd Jobs guy)
Considered as bosses/leaders and top class in their specific areas of specialty
Aniki (boss man, big brother) / Anego (boss lady, big sister) persona
Gintoki is kind of the Joui Vanguard (in the Joui war he is the first to rush in, and in action scense he always works alone and is the first to deploy himself)
Otae is also first line of attack/offensive defense (Silver Soul Arc-Siege of Kabukichou)
both had strong mentors that defined their way of life and philosophy. Gintoki knew Shoyo best while Otae understood their father best.
Gintoki canonically sees himself as surrogate father to Kagura sometimes
Otae raised her brother on her own after their father died
Otae also wholeheartedly accepts the Anego title Kagura bestowed on him
Gintoki is considered by Shinpachi as his Aniki too
Speak and curse in the same kabukichou accent
Personality
both act as Boke (stupid man) to the other straight man characters (tsukkomi)
both tend to hurt the people they love in order to protect/save them
Both can be incredibly self-sacrificial and suicidal for others and for their core beliefs
Both can be truly cruel at insulting others and each other (fatphobia, ageism, classism, misogyny, etc)
both are very very good at finding each other's weakness and exploiting them to cause most damage (or get them to do what the other wants)
both are very good at finding/recognizing each other no matter where or when
both have been positive and negative change to each other in many ways
Friends and Admirers
Both of them have similar group of friends. They operate in the same circles.
both of them are well loved in their community for their strong leadership and cunning bastard personas
both of them have admirers that are mirrors of each other: Kondou-Sarutobi, Kyuubei-Tsukuyo
Both of then are parallels and foils of Hijikata
Both of them are used to mingling/hanging out with opposite sex and know how to play their charms well to their advantage
Storywise
In my old posts, both Otae and Gintoki have preached the same things to other people at different points in time, which means they seriously have a lot of shared values and both live under the same life philosophy.
Them doing dogeza in Beam Saber Arc (nuff'said)
Their tragic future selves dying at the same time in Be Forever Yorozuya Movie and Novelization
Both risked their lives/ imprisonment/death penalty for Hijikata and shinsengumi
Otae earning Queen of Kabukichou title from Otose, Gintoki seen as Tatsugurou/Jirocho Protege
Similar Stands
Lots of manga panels where they mirror the same actions and dialogue on different pages
And etc
GinTae as Foils
Opposite Genders
Otae usually needs to be saved; Gintoki is usually one of the saviors
Gintoki can be quite a gourmet pastry chef and cook; Otae cannot cook ever
Different social classes / poverty level
Gintoki usually needs to be found, Otae does the finding (or is the cause) of the Yorozuya getting back together
Fighting style: Otae is rooted in reality and the traditional martial concepts; Gintoki is more freestyle, fantastical and wild
Fighting Style: Gintoki is Vanguard, Otae is backup/Rearguard or Home Defense/Baggage Train
Sexual experience: gintoki isnt a virgin and have slept with men and women, otae is a virgin through and through
I'm quite rusty on the GinTae nowadays so I hope you can suggest more too. But may I recommend my big essay "Otae's Involvement With The Odd Jobs" back in my older sideblog called @ukaiknowsbest ?
Thank you so much for the ask. I love questions like these.

Fictional characters ike gintoki and hasegawa sometimes give you the validation that your family never did. Everyone always keeps telling you to not do this or that, don't be lazy! Or, you must work hard! But sometimes you just want to relax and live your life, cuz you only live once and you don't want to spend it on running after money and being a serious and responsible citizen. And gintoki and hasegawa make me feel like its okay to be a "loser", and there's no need to feel guilty for not living the best life possible. Not being properly rich is not a sin, it doesn't make you a bad person. Not trying your best is okay. You should live your life however you want, you can be a Madao if you want, its not a crime.
Because personally, I'd rather live a very slow and relaxed life with not too much money instead of being very serious and "living upto my potential" as father says, and becoming something Big!! As he wants me to and having a lot of money.
In conclusion, no one ever told me that its okay if I don't have big goals and don't work as much as others, but madao did.. because despite everything, madao lives.

The Rengokukan ep is SO. Sougo saying "I thought you were a fellow human being" to Gintoki. They meet Kidomaru and don't recognize him as the Demon because it's just a guy. He's very obviously Gintoki, down to being sentenced to execution but being let out because he's a demon. They have an entire conversation on the deck where Gintoki's playing with a kid and telling Kidomaru he's a good father and he regrets what he did, entirely unaware he's talking to himself. Because Kidomaru's also Shoyo. "It's hard to believe that someone who takes care of so many kids could be a demon." We didn't even know about Shoyo until Benizakura but we meet him in episode 27. Episode 27 of 370!!! "[My soul]'s all that holds me up ... If I run now, it'll tear in half." Hijikata calls him a romantic and Shinpachi and Kagura say let's go find out what happens when everyone's a stupid romantic. They say "I can't die until I get my paycheck". It ends with Gintoki cutting the demon mask in half because he doesn't need it anymore.

Okay, was anybody going to tell me that the official music video of the 6th opening of Yorinuki Gintama-san has strong gintaka vibes or was I just supposed to find it out myself?
First I would like to show the lyrics of two specific scenes in the actual opening:
Tumblr media
A silver-haired guy is looking for a place to return home
following the memories of a time that can't come back
We didn't get to see each other, but we're not apart.
With this we realize that this part of the song is from Gintoki's point of view, who's feeling homesick. The first scene shows him remembering Shouyou, Katsura and Takasugi in his childhood, and then Sakamoto, Katsura and Takasugi again during the war.
Tumblr media
Someday when we've gotten to meet,
I'll surely shout aloud "I'm home!"
So that you won't be laughed at
by those who are even now watching from somewhere.
In the second scene, Takasugi is seen putting on bandages under a cherry tree, when Bansai, Matako and Takechi arrive to look for him. The lyrics could be interpreted as Gintoki being the one who greets Takasugi so that he doesn't have to do it in front of those looking at him or the other way around.
Now let's see what the official music video (今日もサクラ舞う暁に) by CHiCO with HoneyWorks) shows:
Tumblr media
At daybreak when the cherry blossoms were dancing,
we were having dreams.
Wow Wow Paint them in the sky and run.
Go my way
Tumblr media
A silver-haired guy is looking for a place to return home
following the memories of a time that can't come back.
We didn't get to see each other, but we're not apart.
The memories of us laughing and crying are even now, even now
living right here.
As you can see, the story of the protagonists of the video has several similarities with that of Gintoki and Takasugi. At the beginning, a silver-haired boy is shown remembering his childhood and noticing the absence of a purple-haired boy who is no longer by his side. But when they were together, he was his friend and rival.
Tumblr media
At daybreak again today when the cherry blossoms were dancing (Wow oh oh)
we found our dream.
Wow (Wow) Wow (Wow)
On your mark, run! (Go my way)
Tumblr media
So that you won't be laughed at
by those who are even now watching from somewhere,
Wow (Wow) Wow (Wow)
paint your dreams and run.
Go my way
The video includes speech bubbles in some scenes (which I didn't consider for aesthetic purposes), but it's very curious that at one point the purple-haired boy mentions that he has won 56 consecutive times, in the same way Takasugi kept track of his victories and defeats against Gintoki.
Tumblr media
My burning wounds still make me run,
holding onto the memories of that time I want to go back to (Wow)
I superpose myself with how I used to be and laugh.
As I was that day when I hid my weakness, even now, even now
I'm right here.
The purple-haired boy is later shown with who appears to be his father. Here both the tone of the song and the visual effects change to demonstrate greater seriousness in the scene. The lyrics seem to indicate a change in perspective towards him, who also longs to return to those days. It's striking because it expresses similar feelings to Takasugi, in addition to showing a complicated relationship between father and son.

At daybreak again today
when the cherry blossoms were dancing (Wow oh oh)
we grasped hold of our dreams.
Wow (Wow) Wow (Wow)
On your mark, run! (Go my way)
The event that broke the video kids' friendship was basically the purple-haired boy beating up his friends at the dojo without any explanation (strangely similar to a little samurai doing dojoyaburi), which caused the silver-haired boy to confront him.
Tumblr media
If we can restart,
and find a place with them,
Wow (Wow) Wow (Wow)
draw your ideals, and run.
Go my way
Tumblr media
I'll say goodbye over and over many times.
I found the only one truth.
Though getting more and more wounded, the past stays the past.
I reach my hand out to the glaring answer.
Tumblr media
We didn't get to see each other, but we'll always be connected.
The memories of us laughing and crying are even now, even now
living right here.
The silver-haired boy questions if their dreams couldn't coexist. It isn't until many years later that he understands the actions of his friend, and he decides to go look for him. The purple-haired boy is under a cherry tree, reminiscing about the past. There were 4 friends, and in addition to the protagonists of the video there was a boy with long hair and another who is the tallest in the group, which reminds me of Joui 4.
Tumblr media
At daybreak again today when the cherry blossoms were dancing (Wow oh oh)
we found our dream.
Wow (Wow) Wow (Wow)
On your mark, run! (Go my way)
Tumblr media
Someday when we've gotten to meet,
I'll surely shout aloud "I'm home!"
So that you won't be laughed at
by those who are even now watching from somewhere
It's after all this that they meet again. The silver-haired boy throws a bokuto at the purple-haired boy and they clash their swords at the beginning of a friendly combat that symbolizes the reconsolidation of their friendship.
Tumblr media
Wow (Wow) Wow (Wow)
paint your dreams and run.
Go my way
I think it's important to highlight the use of cherry trees during the song and, well, in the title itself (At This Dawn When Cherry Blossoms Are Dancing Again). Gintoki once said that the darkest time of the night is just before dawn, and he and Takasugi have been depicted together using cherry trees in the manga, anime, and the final movie. So this could be another poetic way of showing how they would be at their worst before meeting again, a reunion that has a happy connotation for both of them.

It's in my own opinion, guys!!
If you'd like to know why I feel that way to those shipped characters, check below 👇
Tumblr media
You can use the second picture to do the same as I did but in your perspective.
Tumblr media
It's up to you guys if you like what I ship!
Hate:
• ShinKagu
I think the relationship between them is pure family love, NOT ROMANTIC LOVE. I just hate it when they ship characters that somehow just see each other like siblings.
• GinKagu
IT'S PATERNAL LOVE NOT ROMANTIC! As I said at ShinKagu, they just love and respect each other Father&Daughter/Brother& little sister style. And if you know their age (27 and 14), they have a freaking 13 age gap. I just hate this ship.
• OkiNobu
So the main reason for me hating this ship is because I ship okikagu, actually that's also the 30% reason why I don't ship ShinKagu and GinKagu. Well I do know they might have a little chemistry but thinking that made me sick! I'm loyal to OkiKagu, mind you. I actually kinda feel jealous at OkiNobu at Baragaki Arc (thorny arc) when Sougo smiles while he is fighting Nobume, what calms me down was thinking how Okita smiles just fighting Kagura or the moments they have. I have more to explain but I kinda feel lazy to sort it out all.
Dislike:
• GinSachi
I really hate thissss!!! Well the reason is, I HATE SACCHAN'S ATTITUDE TOWARDS GIN! like she is a real perv! I hate her masochist side! I just hate it. I don't completely hate her but this ship sank for me, even Gintoki hates her.
• KamuKagu
I don't get why people ship them romantically, they're freaking siblings, like blood-related siblings so far! But I'd like them to interact more as siblings ready to protect the other.
• HijiKagu
Well, reading fanfictions I can't help but think why they ship the two. Maybe because I'm OkiKagu again, but for me Mitsuba and Hijikata are fitted to be canon! Why did Mitsuba even die! I'd like to see her interact with other characters too! Like HijiMitsu is in my top five!
Don't mind:
• HijiGin
I don't really get why they ship the two, they were just rivals but Okita and Kagura were the same so, I pretty much don't mind them. I'm also not a Yaoi fangirl so maybe that's the other reason, I can't just picture them. But many fans ship them so okay, I already accepted that Okikagu was not the most popular ship and it was HijiGin, but not that I care. I have my own opinions right!
• KyuuTae
I'm not a Yuri fan either. They're better off friends than nothing.
• HijiTae
Some ship Otae with Hijikata and so I don't mind it. They could work but Mitsuba is the one and only (for me) to be shipped with Hijikata.
• TakaMata
Matako is doing her best, I don't mind this ship because... I don't really know. We can all see that Matako is truly in love with Takasugi, and I think you did great Matako-san!
• GinTama
I was really planning on giving them the dislike category but I realised and also remembered the time where they both went to relax on Tama's day off and also on the silver soul arc, so i kinda understand why you shipped the two!
Like:
• KamuNobu
I actually ship Kamui and Soyo more than Nobume, but I also ship the two, okay! Well they don't interact much or maybe they didn't even interact yet but I think they could work it out. Also I read a lot of OkiKagu fanfics and sometimes they were shipped to each other and the way the authors did it made me ship them so thank you Authors!
• GinTae
The most previous fanfiction I've read has hints of GinTae and they do work out well I must say. Well they have nine years of age gap but for me Otae didn't look, feel or act as an eighteen year old woman, maybe because her father died when she was just a child.
• YamaTama
Zaki deserved to be loved! Thank you! Well
They do work well together, especially Yamazaki who is now a robot just like tama!
Love:
• KonTae
I ship Otae to Gori the most! I can see Gori's hard work for Otae and I think even if Otae already married someone else, Gori would still live and stalk her. Him being attacked by Otae was sometimes the funny part of the show so I love this ship! I. The Farewell Shinsengumi Arc, I feel like Otae's into Kondou all of the sudden, she even tried to defend and trust Gori from Nobu Nobu. I even think Otae was disappointed and sad Gori was gone and is not stalking her like usual. When the Shinsengumi was leaving, Tae-san was bidding her goodbye to Gori peacefully and was hoping to see her again.
• SakaMutsu
I just shipped them cause I feel like they were meant and fitted to each other even if Mutsu is always annoyed at him. If he hates him and her busy work, she should've quit already.
• ZenSachi
Just feel like this ship would work much better than GinSachi!
• KatsuEli
It was meant to be at BROTP but I was not in the mood to edit (lazy mode:ON). I liked the strong bond between them, and how both sides were eager to protect the others! (Proof: Farewell Shinsengumi Arc and Episode 44)
• GinTsu
My top two shipped characters in Gintama! I just love the interaction between them and based on the fanfiction I've read, they work well and deserve to be canon!
BROTP:
• GinHase
Admit it, you also like their friendship. When they're together, it's funny!
• GinZura
• GinSaka
• Shige shigexKatsura
• KatsuKagu
I like the Leader and Zura duo. Both are childish and slow!
• TsuSachi
• TakaBansai
• OkiKamu
I'd like them to be close friends or friends. Nothing just like it.
• HijiOki
They do work well when needed, Okita is just jealous of Hijikata for getting all the attention but he still respects him.
OT3:
• Yorozuya
I like how strong the bond they have, that's all
• Joui 3
Pretty lazy to type so, just saying they were good!
OTP:
• Okikagu
I have already explained why, just gonna put the link of my post and check it out if you want! There's more to it but I'm quite lazy.

@jiraipink asked:
𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞~! ☆
So we've seen how Gintoki and Umibozo reacted to hearing about Kagura having a significant other. How would Kamui react to hearing about Kagura dating someone or being romantically interested in someone?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
( I imagine when he hears about it, he's going to say ''Wow, someone actually wanted to date a girl as ugly as my sister?'' and act like he doesn't really care, especially if they can't fight. But, believe it or not his protective side kicks in.
Kamui is well aware that Kagura has abandonment issues because of him and their father. He knows how much it hurt when he left home, and how lonely she was when Umibozu always left her behind. So, he wanted to make sure whoever this S/O is, doesn't make her feel like that.
He's going to be a lot scarier than Gintoki and Umibozu when confronting the person, especially since his threats will be subtle. His smile will radiate the most murderous aura ever, but he's going to judge their character and see how they react to him and if they'll abandon her simply because her family is uhhh, kinda crazy. If you really love Kagura, you'll be willing to stand up to someone who will happily kill you without remorse. Cowards aren't allowed to date his baby sister.
He can see through people's lies a lot, and if this person is pathetic, and will so easily abandon her then they will disappear under mysterious circumstances. The thing is.... Kagura surprisingly trusts Kamui's judgment of someone she's dating over her father and Gintoki. So, if that happens, she'll be a little gloomy if she ended up genuinely liking them but eventually moves on after Kamui offers to take her to eat, or decides to take her along with him when he leaves earth to forget about it. He's incredibly immature, yeah, but his more mature sides will show when it comes to taking care of her and making sure no one hurts her emotionally. She's been through enough already. )
