If you can find the right approach to studying for the GRE, it's not out of reach. In fact, I scored 318 on my first attempt at the exam in just two weeks! How did I do it? And what can you learn from my experience?

Get a copy of the ETS 12-Week Official Guide, which contains over 1,500 questions in total. The guide is divided into four sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Analytical Writing, and Math Skills Practice Exercises (which is where you'll find all of your drills).

Identify your weak topics within each section: for example, if you're weak at algebra but strong at geometry then focus on drilling those specific areas until they feel comfortable again before moving on to other topics that might be easier for you but still require some work such as vocabulary or reading comprehension passages

THE BASICS OF A GRE STUDY PLAN.

You're going to need a study plan. The most important thing you can do is use the ETS 12-Week Official Guide, which has detailed explanations and practice questions for every section of the test.

Take full-length practice exams under timed conditions with scratch paper. This will help you identify your weak topics so that you can drill them later in your studies to increase your score in GRE exam. Make sure that before attempting a question again on that topic, you understand it fully--don't just guess at answers!

Identify weak topics, drill them, and make sure you understand them fully before attempting questions on them again.

Now you can begin identifying the weak topics. You should have a good idea of your strengths and weaknesses by now, so this will be easy to do.

Once you have identified your weak topics, drill them until they are no longer a problem. If one topic is giving you trouble (as opposed to just being on the harder side), make sure that before attempting questions in that area again that it is fully understood by doing some more practice problems or reviewing your notes from class/the textbook if necessary.

The GRE is a challenging test, but with proper preparation, it's possible to boost your score significantly!

My GRE Test Day Experience at Prestige Shantiniketan, Bengaluru

One month before the exam, I was nervous to appear for the test and I had finally gathered some guts and scheduled my GRE slot on the 2nd of September at 10 AM. The nearest test centre for me was Prestige Shantiniketan, Bengaluru. I didn't had much expectations from my exam.

One week before the exam, I had visited the test center to get familiar with the route and traffic. However, I was not allowed to enter the premises of Shantiniketan.

Two days before the exam, I received a call from the testing center as a gentle reminder. They asked me to come with my passport an hour before the test time. I had received a list of shortlisted universities from my counselor from Galvanize to send the free ETS test scores.

One day before the exam, I watched two YouTube videos about the testing procedure at the test centers and revised vocabulary from Barron's 1100 Words You Need to Know. I had created a sheet of words which helped me a lot in my last minute revision.

On the test day, I was in an exam mode. I went through the Analytic Writing responses with score 6 provided in The Official Guide to the GRE General Test. I reached the test center at 8 AM and sat at Chai Point sipping onto some tea revising the vocabulary.

At 9 AM, I went at the entrance of Shantiniketan. The guards stopped every vehicle which entered the complex. It was a huge complex. I had to show my GRE appointment letter at the security booth. The security lady wrote something on the back of the piece of paper and I went inside. The ambience was very good. The Tower B was around 500 meters away from the entrance. Initially, I entered a wrong building, located adjacent to it. When I reached the test center, a lot of students were already waiting outside with their backups. A few parents had came to accompany their progenies too.

At 9:15 AM, the Prometric Testing center people started calling us one by one inside. They wore a grey tee with Prometric printed on it. At the desk, they checked our Passport for name, gave us a locker key and made us sign a declaration form. After that, we were made to sit in the locker room which had benches. The lockers had alphabetical series from A to E with each series having 20-30 lockers.

At 9:30 AM, when almost everybody was seated, we got instructions to keep everything inside the lockers - no watches, no bracelets, no stationery were allowed inside the testing zone. Moreover, we were made to keep our snack items on top of lockers because during the test time no one was supposed to access them.

At 9:45 AM, we were let inside the testing zone. We were supposed to take only three things with us inside - Passport, declaration form and locker keys. There was frisking taking place in the testing zone. Firstly, our declaration forms were collected. During frisking, we had to keep our specs, passport and locker keys in a tray. The frisker would place the passport against our face and ask full name. Then would check our palms, arms, pockets, and ankles. Next, we had to sit on a chair where another person asked question related to the passport and captured our photo. Our names with photos were displayed on computers in the test room. There were noise cancellation headphones which were supposed to help from the disturbing keyword noises but they were hardly helpful. The room was very cold in the beginning and then became hot towards the end. The examination UI was really outdated and because of that I skipped couple of questions by clicking continue button. I was really pissed off. There was 10 minutes optional break after the third section which I think is necessary. In a nutshell, the exam was overall good.

After the exam we were popped up with the screen to send the scores or cancel score. If you select cancel end our scores then your test won't be evaluated. Only after you select report score your test scores would appear. Then you get an option to send your scores for Undergraduate Program, followed by Master Program. You can select colleges with either by country and state name or by college code. After the entire process is completed, the computer shuts down.

new speaker, new paragraph; all is lost if the reader gets confused. 

this one’s for all you writers who are afraid of using “said”: a litany of synonyms for “said” (groaned/opined/demanded) can be overwhelming to readers, especially if they dominate a single exchange. i can say the same of adverbs (groggily/gruffly/angrily). this isn’t to say you shouldn’t use these tools ever (they’re helpful for emphasis), but an excess can be hard to read or just unattractive. 

note how the following are similar in function:

• “don’t worry about it,” he gushed.

• “don’t worry about it,” he says enthusiastically.

• “don’t worry about it,” he says, breaking into a warm smile.

also keep in mind that you can forego dialogue tags altogether in situations where you’ve otherwise made it clear who the speaker is. this will make your dialogue less choppy. paragraphing helps with this, as do actions and introspection:

• “aww, thank you so much!” you put the plate aside to wrap akutagawa’s stiff frame in a big hug.

• “i’m talking about the flowers, dazai. what the hell?” he paused in turn as if trying to remember something.

What Is It?

The GRE is a standardized exam, a lot like the SAT/ACT, to test basic critical thinking, analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills that everyone acquires over an education regardless of field of study. It is a general test because anyone with a college background should be able to complete it. The math is very basic for this reason. This exam is used by universities to determine aptitude and anyone seeking to attend a US university is wise to take it, as most universities still require scores. There are three sections:

Analytical Writing: This section involves responding to two essay types, analyzing an issue and analyzing an argument. They are looking for the ability to articulate and support ideas, examine a claim and evidence, sustain a clear and coherent train of thought, and display a control of the English language. The thing is to maintain a focused discussion and answer the prompt. They want to see if you can give a measured and thoughtful response.

Verbal Reasoning: This section includes questions concerning vocabulary, reading comprehension, and word relation.  Knowing the word itself is great, but the test wants you to then complete a sentence or relate the word to an equivalent.  The reading comprehension questions are similar to most reading comprehension standardized test questions. It’s about figuring things out with the given information.

Quantitative Reasoning: This section includes questions on math topics such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. This section is mostly concerned with the ability to reason using math models and numbers. Like the Verbal section, its about figuring things out using the given information.

The exam is roughly 4 hours long, with the sections and 10-minute break with the intermittent one-minute breaks between sections You are allowed scratch paper to work things out on.

General Strategy

Since I will be spending days on each questions type. I will reserve specific strategies for those days. Here are general tips from the book and my McNair resources.

1.       Know administrative procedures, types of questions and instructions for them, number of questions, and the timing for sections. These save you hassle and time on test day.

2.       Keep a strong mentality. Try to remain composed and not get flustered. If the questions are getting harder, it means you are advancing, since the test is adaptive. Be confident since every new test is a new opportunity. This exam is just as combative as you make it.

3.       Experience is key. Take lots of practice tests to build up stamina. This exam is 4 hours with minimal breaks. And take practice tests in as similar of an environment as you can.

4.       The test is adaptive, so the difficulty of the next section depends on your previous performance. However, always do your best. Don’t try to perform a certain way to get an easier section.

5.       This test measures skills, not content. You won’t know everything. Just use context and puzzle things out.

6.       There is no penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question.

7.       The “Mark” and “Review” features let you mark questions and then see a list of what you marked Use this to mark questions you are unsure of or need to revisit. And always answer the easiest questions first. 

Setting a Goal

I took a practice test last summer. I have my scores below and my goal scores. Engineering requires a high Quantitative Reasoning score, so that is my main focus. However, a high holistic score is always best. My goals are in the highest percentiles to keep me competitive.
