Record Reserve shopping list, 2018.

It’s been how many years since I set foot in any iteration of Record Reserve? “Iteration” because no other record store has moved locations more than any. Looks like Tim has finally found a permanent holding in Northport, close to the water. He’s been dealing since the beginning of the decade and filled in the blanks that other Northport stores Long Island Vinyl Exchange and Permanent Records once supplied. Last time I shopped there I was looking through the hardcore and punk 45′s and always bought a few from him. He said the store would be opened on Monday, so that did it for me. Little did I know that upon arrival, I see on the door that Record Reserve’s only off day was Monday itself. I was lucky.

Record Reserve is the narrowest of all stores on the island. Walk in and it’s no more than 12 feet wide. Shelves on both sides of the store allow a quick run-through of its’ entire selection in less than three hours. Behind the storefront window and the left hand side of the store are plenty of shelves of well-known and classic artists for attainable prices. What I did notice (for example) was how I found some titles for $6.00 when further down the store found the exact same copy for $4.00. I also found at least 10 Laura Nyro records in the store, a running joke Tim doesn’t realize he’s made for himself. I was feeling a late-Seventies / early-Eighties kick, so I found two of Peter Gabriel’s solo records and The Cars’ Shake It Up and Panorama. I also found me A Clockwork Orange’s motion picture soundtrack. That’s mine because you take no chances with cult status. I found The Stranglers’ at a low price. Constantly hearing of them and “An Evening With Hugh Cornwell“ which I could never get tired of hearing made me take it. No shame in picking up Debbie Gibson whom was a radio favorite during my Eighties Nintendo youth. At the very end of 20 or so shelves were the 45′s bin with a majority of classic hits and little punk and hardcore. That’s where I found Spent Idols and the Out Cider D.C. label.

On the right hand side of the store are the specifics; racks devoted to jazz, soul, punk, real Eighties metal, and black metal. As I rummaged through all the bins, I stopped at a few and tried to remember if I already had them in my collection. As if I was now holding back on purchasing blind because Youtube and Discogs make my decisions, I was gauging myself to see if I would purchase some titles anyway not remembering if I already had them or not (a future audit told me otherwise). It pained me to pass up Cabaret Voltaire’s The Crackdown, and I almost never see them up for grabs. A shiny copy of The Silver Apples’ debut was there for the taking, too. Both for at least $17.00 or more apiece, I couldn’t. I always feel I can order or find them elsewhere for less. Same for Bathory’s self-titled which was going for $25.00.

A very small selection of cassettes and CDs were a non-issue. Tim also sold taort cards, too. Ready to go? Not so fast. After scanning through both sides of an already-narrow store and a lone bin at the front of the counter, I noticed he had several rolling crates of records hiding under the bins. There goes another 30 minutes trying to strike record-collector gold on possible unexpected finds. Again, I had to swap out some picks for the exact same ones with lower price tags. I could also swear I found five more records of Laura Nyro’s. Almost three hours later, it was time to cash out.

I was the only customer in the entire store for that time. Ready to go. Tim told me that he was open that Monday because he expected to go through his Record Store Day shipments which didn’t come in. So why not open? I asked him about the vintage stereo equipment stacked in front of the registers and was curious what his going prices were. It’s been four years without a reciever since my gramma’s stopped working. Just browsing around, that’s all. He then told me “$60.00 cash or $65.00 credit?” “Credit, no discounts!” I said, because we need to keep these stores going. Tim laughed but he got it. My all-vinyl purchase here would be one of the least expensive. The day was still young, however. It’s 4 PM. Our resident dee-jay Maxwell (MXW) was on-the-air doing his local-music slot. He had his lady folk singer friend Takami aboard for the ride, listening in as I drove to the athletics store in preparation for re-joining the gym.

Grue Believer Celebration Shenanigans continues with this review of Countess Dracula (1971), selected by special guest host and Decades of Horror fan Gregory Crosby. In this episode, the Grue Crew tackles another Hammer film from the Seventies featuring the stunning and talented Ingrid Pitt in the title role. While the film has no fangs and has little to do with Dracula, it borrows heavily from the legends of Countess Bathory who is said to have bathed in the blood of virgins to restore her youth. Countess Dracula is far more serious and mature than many of Hammer’s offerings throughout the decade and is well worth a revisit. Check out the Grue-Crew discussion to discover why.

At the time of this writing, Countess Dracula is available to stream from Classic Horror Movie Channel, Wicked Horror TV Channel, Shudder, AMC+, and Tubi. The film is available on physical media in Blu-ray format from Synapse Films.

Here’s the thing about relationships in The Order (if that fandom is still alive)

They’re bad (most of them anyway)

Queerbating

It doesn’t matter that we got a half-assed 2 minutes long lesbian relationship if it got terminated immediately and sprung out of nowhere and half of that relationship literally got sent to hell; also both members are POC

You can’t make hamish and randall kiss out of nowhere and put that much feeling into it if you’re not going to go through with it even if their chemistry was off the charts (like the kiss me or the we had to had to or he wishes??)

Overall I think The Order just has a problem with relationships (both straight and queer ones, though I do enjoy Hamish x Vera and/or Hamish x Randall, Randall x Gabrielle and Nicole x Lilith even if it was shortlived)

Exhibit A: Randall and Lilith. Why was that ever a thing? Just... just no

Exhibit B: Jack and Alyssa. They are for some reason the main couple yet they are mostly on and off and it’s not even entertaining. No one was surprised that they are each other’s love interests, but everything about them just gets so repetitive. Halfway through you’re just annoyed they’re not together. And even then you’re not enjoying it. But they are the main heterosexual white couple that got way too much screentime

Most of these problems would be resolved if we had got a season 3, but sadly we’re left with this mess.

Randall: 

· the biggest dork

· he's always making you laugh

· but he's also really sweet 

· brings you your favorite snacks when you're feeling down

· big cuddler

· he can be the big spoon or little spoon doesn't matter 

· walks around naked as often as he can much to the other knights dismay 

· he'll come into the kitchen fully nude while everyone is eating breakfast and you have to cover him with your jacket

Hamish: 

· so smart it's kind of intimidating

· he'll make references you don't understand 

· teasing him by hiding his vests before class

· he takes you out on the most luxurious dates

· pulling him in by the tie to kiss him

· he always helps you write your papers which makes Randall jealous cause Hamish makes him and Jack do their homework themselves 

· he'll get you flowers for no reason 

· and writes you poems 

Lilith: 

· you're the only person she's not grumpy around 

· the way she told you she liked you was "i hate you less than most people" 

· she's so tiny she drowns in your sweaters 

· frequently having to stop her from ripping Randall's head off 

· carrying her to bed when she falls asleep on the couch while you watch movies 

· calling her Lili to mess with her 

· calming her down when she's angry 

· picking her up and throwing her over your shoulder when she's yelling at Randall or Jack 

Jack: 

· the himbo of the knights 

· he's dum but cute so it makes up for it 

· he has zero logic so you're always getting him out of trouble

· good luck though when Randall is the one giving him ideas 

· his idea of a date is getting McDonalds 

· all he eats is junk food so you have to force him to eat a salad once in a while 

· he's so clumsy you're always cleaning up his messes 

· he tried baking you a cake for your birthday and ended up with batter on the ceiling 

Gabrielle: 

· she didn't ask you on a date she told you you were going on a date 

· when you find out about her dad it makes sense why she acts the way she does

· she's actually pretty soft with you 

· though in public she still puts up her mean girl persona 

· no one understands why you're with her but you don't care 

· she's smart, headstrong and determined and that's what you love about her 

· she constantly buys you clothes she thinks you'll look good in

· so many couples photos on instagram
