I went to a plant swap today! Got to chat with some gardening ladies, gave away some mint & comfrey & Jerusalem artichokes, plus field pea seeds, and picked up some fun stuff for my gardens.

Left front is borage (Borago officinalis), which I've grown before & found to be easy & nice to have, though I don't particularly want to eat the leaves. They taste nice, but they're unpleasantly fuzzy. Perhaps I'll do fancy things with the flowers - bees like them, too!

Back left is a couple of sweet peppers - "Lipstick" variety, I think.

Big guys in the middle are swamp sunflower (Helianthus angustifolius) and blue mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum), and behind those are hiding a couple of little pink coneflower plants (Echinacea sp.).

On the bottom right, two Amish paste tomatoes.

I'm not sure where I'll put the flowers yet - start a flower bed somewhere, or just in the fenced vegetable garden where they won't be in danger of getting mowed? - but they can sit in their pots for a few days while I decide.

did not let the woe about my physical abilities and energy levels get the better of me today and instead did 10 minutes of gently digging grass from my flowerbeds!!! very beautiful very powerful!

Garden Log #5/03/2024 - Early Morning

I'm exhausted!!!

I had to take the apple trees to work with me yesterday so I could soak the roots on the way home (I bought a clean 5 gallon food grade bucket so I wouldn't need to worry about bumps splashing water everywhere). They soaked for the 2 hour drive, then I had to mow the yard when I got home, so they got about another hour and a half before I planted them.

I don't like the way one of the trees looks because the other three are all budding while this one just doesn't look as good (but I've never planted fruit trees, so what do I know?). I added some blood meal sprinkled on top of the soil, but I also just read that you're not supposed to add fertilizer for a couple weeks after planting? But I also watched a video of an orchard owner planting new transplants and then fertilizing immediately after?

Oh well, I prefer the trial and error method when it comes to gardening.

I need to head out to work on the garden a little earlier today because it's going to be another hot day and I definitely saw some of my catnip plants drooping last night. I, regretfully, did not check on the plants in the greenhouse before I went to bed. Most of them were doing fine in the morning, but the... more expensive seedlings were showing some stress from temps going down the past couple of nights combined with almost 90 degree daytime temps for almost a week.

I do still have 2 seeds of each variety saved, and I've also had a 100% germination rate from the other seeds I planted, so the only loss I'll have if/when I plant a new set is time... though they will probably grow much better if I can set up a raised bed inside the greenhouse and plant them directly.

I did a quick check of the cabbage and cayenne pepper sprouts I transplanted and, aside from a little drooping from a couple of the cabbage sprouts that need a little more water, they did survive the hot ass sun yesterday.

In non-garden news, my anxiety is getting real bad.

Purple sweet potato vines are from Central and South America. They are a beautiful vining plant that starts off green and turns a deep purple as they mature. The tubers produced by both edible and ornamental sweet potatoes are edible, but the ornamental varieties will not taste very good. Today I planted flax (for fiber!), pawpaws, and two Sun Sugar tomatoes. I even put cages on the tomatoes right away; I am very On Top of It.

I had way more pawpaw seeds than I'd realized, so there's like 10 in each of those pots, and I'll have to cull them down later. I also took 15-20 of them down in the woods & threw them around down near the creek.

Garden Log #5/01/2024 - Early Morning

I haven't done anything today (it's first thing in the morning), so this is a log for yesterday.

I had an unexpected day off, so while I spent a bit of the morning cleaning inside because it was raining, later in the day I managed to plant my cabbage in the garden, as well as a couple of cayenne pepper seedlings, though I don't know if those will make it since it is still a little early in the season.

After that I transplanted some of the extra cucumber and summer squash that were starting to sprout because I don't like wasting plants if I can help it.

I hate to admit it, but the day before yesterday I actually did leave my drip water on (the other time I left it on just barely, but this time it was fully turned on), and the only saving grace was that the garden is on a slope so the water drained pretty well. The plants actually seemed to be doing better yesterday than before, so maybe they needed it? I hope?

Anyway, after the small things I decided to work on another garden section, used the weed-eater down a 3'x20' area followed by the mower as low as the deck allowed and I was able to lay some weed barrier down. Hopefully it will hold up, but I did cover actual grass and it might be a little more difficult to control with how late in the season I laid it.

My apple trees are also supposed to be arriving today, which only sucks because it's supposed to be in the 80's and I'll be out of the house until after 5 with no one around to bring them inside and a front porch (where all the packages are always dropped off) in full sunlight after 3pm. I hope they'll survive, but it might just be up to luck.

I need to finish getting ready for work, including watering the plants in the greenhouse.

Usopp is a Storyteller

C’mon. If Elbaf didn’t/doesn’t mean anything to and for Usopp, then why put so much into Usopp’s character design that points to Elbaf? What did Little Garden, Enies Lobby, and Dressrosa mean? I hope certain characteristics of Usopp are front and center like they were once upon a time. Due to recency bias, I’m not sure people remember who Usopp is and has always been about. And that makes me sad.

Hopefully, Elbaf re-introduces Usopp, so people can see what Usopp fans see in him and what made (makes) him so special to the Romance Dawn trio to the point they all wanted him to get on board. If not, then I must keep my fingers crossed for…something. Based on recent spoilers, Nami’s log pose has to be the MVP here.
