I really do think this take is profound. Honestly. I do. But when I frame my perspective, it’s usually on the basis of how people ditch sentiment for what’s right in front of them instead of what they could infer. I love the nuance in Usopp and everything he represents. I can get behind the symbols, the metaphors, all of it. But when I say Oda underutilizes him, what I mean is: I wish he leaned into what’s already on the page rather than what fans have to project.
I even love the botanist angle because it fits so perfectly with Usopp’s role. Symbolically, yes, but also practically as a sniper. Think about it: ghillie suits, camouflage, snipers needing to know their terrain inside and out. The environment is their weapon. That’s Usopp to a tee.
The thing is, we Usopp fans already know who he is and what he represents. It would just be nice if Oda could, for once, spell it out for the larger audience. Because Usopp keeps getting singled out in these conversations when, let’s be real, everyone outside the Monster Trio has been underutilized too. I can’t ever seem to word it the right way, but at the end of the day, I can accept Usopp for who he is. He’s like a plant: rooted, growing, full of potential. We already see that.
But as you said, Oda’s made a sad situation. If Oda really wanted to do right by Usopp, it wouldn’t even take much: a standalone movie, a bit more backstory, a proper Haki showcase, or even just a quiet moment where Usopp sits down and admits to himself what he’s always been aware of.
And honestly, there are ā€œtaboosā€ that used to be dismissed but are now accepted and even celebrated. Maybe Usopp is today’s taboo, the character that one day, finally, people will embrace for everything he brings.
So no, I’m not challenging Usopp fans. We’ve always known. I’m challenging the fandom at large.
Dear Oda, Stop Playing With Usopp’s Sniper Agenda
So, I was rambling to my sister again the other day (shocker) about Usopp underutilization. And here’s what’s been gnawing at me: since his sniper role is still treated like this mysterious side-gig in canon, did Oda actually plan that? Or did he just toss it in because (a) pirates used muskets, (b) every Shonen needs ā€œthe ranged guy,ā€ or (c) guns were simply aesthetic in the 90s when One Piece was first cooking? Like maybe I missed some ā€œOda Saidā€ in an SBS or interview, but I lowkey feel like the reason we don’t get more sniper shine is less about story and more about… whatever was trendy at the time.
And listen, okay, what really gets me pacing at 3AM is this: why can’t Usopp ever have those over-the-top sniper flex moments where he doesn’t even need to shoot? Just pure skill-check vibes. Show me him flexing his instincts, his awareness, his freaky ability to just know. We think we know how OP snipers operate, but Oda never sits us down and says, ā€œOkay kids, here’s how a sniper actually works.ā€ (Which is tragic, because you know Usopp would eat that spotlight alive).
Like, yeah, fillers gave us glimpses, but imagine if canon Usopp had scenes where he’s like: ā€œObservation Haki? Cute. I already clocked that enemy sniper breathing weird behind a tree 200 yards away.ā€ That’s what I mean. He doesn’t need Haki to do it. He just knows because that’s who he is.
And don’t even get me started on how fans only want to give him his sniper flowers when it suits their argument. Case in point: Egghead arc. Usopp notices the glowing red eyes in the water before anyone else, even the torpedoes, and Usopp fans rightfully went feral. But haters swooped in with the: ā€œUhhh actually that wasn’t Observation Haki, it was just his sniper eyes.ā€ šŸ™„ Oh, okay. So now you admit his sniper skills exist when it’s convenient for your little victory lap? Y’all love to play both sides like it’s a buffet.
Anyway. What kills me is that Usopp could’ve been the poster child for why sniping is an art. Not just point-and-shoot. It’s prediction, patience, spatial awareness, reading a battlefield like a chessboard. Haki enhances that, sure, but even before he unlocked it, he was already ridiculous. That’s why I keep wondering when Yasopp popped his Haki cherry and why Garp (in that deleted Water 7 scene) hyped him up, saying nobody escapes Yasopp’s bullet…hence his epithet ā€œChaser.ā€ That’s legacy.
Ugh. I love Usopp. Truly. But he deserves so much better. This is why fanfiction exists. Because if Oda won’t give my boy his flowers, I will. He’s got that insane spatial awareness, shoots with both eyes open like a pro, and can scout an area faster than anyone else on the crew because hello??? that’s literally sniper 101. Headcanon? No, babes, that’s canon he just hasn’t been allowed to flex yet.
Anyway. That’s my TED Talk. Thanks for coming.

Usopp and Nami remind me of the friendship between Chandler and Rachel.
Tumblr media
Although most people quickly agree that Usopp and Nami are best friends, I still feel that this relationship is somewhat underrated, in a rather obvious way. I remember watching a YouTube video about One Piece that listed Nami’s best friends, and the comments were filled with debates over whether Luffy or Usopp should be considered her number one friend. This really highlights how significant their friendship is.
I can totally imagine a scenario where Usopp and Nami end up fighting over cheesecake, and it spirals into a funny situation where they end up eating it off the floor after Nami accidentally drops hers, causing Usopp to drop his slice too. They can be quite petty like that when it comes to sharing!

I genuinely believe if Usopp said ā€œyou’re telling me a shrimp fried this rice?ā€ at dinner, Sanji would be the one laughing the loudest. You think he’s ever heard that joke before? Absolutely not. He’s been hearing bawdy sailor jokes from the guys at the Baratie but he’s never heard a simple word play joke. He makes shrimp fried rice again a week later and laughs just as hard when Luffy says it.

Time for another for another fic rec.
ā€œOr So The Story Goesā€ by Anonymous
https://archiveofourown.org/works/68223931
i really enjoy zoro and usopp as a duo. like when zoro is with luffy, zoro is either the one going along with his goofy antics or acts as the halfway reasonable foil. but when he's alone with usopp you are suddenly hit with crystal clear clarity that zoro is fucking insane. it just so happens that luffy is more insane.

I recall Dragon saying, ā€œA parent’s weakness is their child.ā€ It would be intriguing to see how Oda applies this concept to Yasopp and Usopp as well. However, I realize that my expectations may be too high at the moment. A recent post on Reddit got me thinking about this.
Yasopp could be one of the reasons for increased attention on Usopp's spotlight (tl;dr)
Tumblr media
I know I keep bringing up Yasopp, and it may seem redundant, but I want to emphasize that there’s no reason we shouldn’t get at least some answers about him. One of the most important questions is: Does Yasopp know Banchina is dead?
This is a game-changing question because it would reveal whether Yasopp was keeping tabs on Usopp, how much he knows about his son’s journey, and whether he was aware of Banchina’s illness. Why did he leave, knowing she was sick—despite her encouragement for him to follow his dream? Was there something dangerous about his presence in Syrup Village? Was he forced out, with Shanks as his only option? Because if he was simply hanging around in a nearby island/village but never reaching out to his sick wife and child, that paints a much different picture of his character. And we don’t have enough information to confidently say Yasopp is a bad person. But answering whether he knows about Banchina’s death would provide key context.
Another major question: How and why did Shanks seek out Yasopp?
In Strong World Episode 0, it’s mentioned that Yasopp was already well-known for his sniping skills, which means Shanks deliberately recruited him. But why? Was it purely because of Yasopp’s skill, or was there more behind it? Did Shanks help him escape something in Syrup Village? Did Yasopp have a past that made him an ideal crew member? Understanding this would not only shed light on Yasopp’s decision to leave his family but also reveal more about Shanks’ mindset when forming his crew.
And that ties into more significant questions:
- When did Yasopp develop Observation Haki? We know when Usopp awakened his, but did Yasopp always have it?
- Why did Yasopp want to become a "brave warrior of the sea"? Did he have a background similar to Usopp’s, or was it something else?
- Why was Banchina so determined for Yasopp to chase his dream, even at the cost of leaving his family? She was a good woman, so something significant must have happened for her to support his decision.
- Why is Yasopp so loyal to Shanks? This could explain why he was willing to leave his wife and son behind in the first place.
A crucial emotional question is: Why is Yasopp afraid to meet Usopp?
In his filler encounter with Daddy Masterson, Yasopp seems convinced that Usopp would hate him. That suggests guilt—but guilt for what exactly? Just for leaving, or for something more? Understanding this would clarify why Yasopp never tried to reconnect with his son.
When did Yasopp find out Usopp was on Luffy’s crew?
It’s likely he learned after Usopp’s bounty became public, as we see in Dressrosa when he’s holding a newspaper and laughing. But did he know before that? Did he recognize Sniper King?
And then there’s Usopp’s perspective on Yasopp—which is strange because Usopp almost never mentions his father. After the Syrup Village arc and a few minor moments (like the deleted Water 7 scene with Garp), Yasopp’s existence barely comes up, even from Luffy.
- Does Usopp secretly resent Yasopp? Not necessarily in an ā€œI hate you for leavingā€ way, but perhaps in a ā€œI’ll never measure up to youā€ way.
- Does Usopp realize he has Observation Haki? Given his personality, he might not even fully grasp it, despite using it at Dressrosa.
Back to Yasopp:
- Does he know Banchina was sick? If not, why didn’t he check in? If he did, what was so dire that he still chose to leave?
- Did he leave to protect Syrup Village? Was his presence a threat to Banchina and Usopp? Did he sacrifice his reputation for their safety?
Lastly, a fun but potentially meaningful question: Does Sniper Island actually exist?
While it might never be confirmed, it could tie into why snipers are so crucial in pirate crews. Three out of four Yonkos have snipers—why? Is there an underground sniper network? Why was Usopp hesitant to take on the role?
So, the big question is: Which of these revelations would truly change the game and redefine Yasopp’s character?

So Oda said Kid and Killer would be Scottish if they were from the real world…
Can we take a moment to think of how difficult it would be to understand both of them especially with Kid’s temper tantrums and Killer’s mask?
You know the Straw hat pirates are gonna be making even more fun of them than usualšŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

You know, in some way, I really feel like you have nothing to worry about because people are weird. Take Usopp away and the fandom would probably be broken. I think of it like this. When all of the members in the Pussycat Dolls besides Nicole were replaced, the public got salty. Management believed that since Nicole was the only one who sang and was pushed the most, nobody would care if the others were swapped out. But apparently they were much more than ā€œNicole’s background dancers.ā€
That’s how I see it with Usopp. If he were to die, it would be a huge deal and the fandom would never stop talking about it, especially since we were all under the impression that Oda did not like killing off characters. And well, like Joni Mitchell says, you never know what you got till it is gone.
And I do not think he needs to die in order to be considered a Brave Warrior of the Sea. That fan theory is barf to me. His death would only prove what was true all along, that he was never a side character. Side character my a**. And I have seen this happen before in other fandoms like Arrow and The Walking Dead, and look how that turned out. šŸ™ƒ
But you know what makes me even more sad!? It's the fact that if Usopp actually dies, there will be hundred (maybe thousands) of people celebrating that moment
I feel like an asshole for comparing but there's a huge difference between every other Strawhat death moment reaction and specifically Usopp
And that breaks my heart everytime, to know people will be happy (and probably not caring for Luffy feelings on that, saying that he finally get rid of a burden so he can be king of pirates)

I was talking to someone a while back about this exact thing, and honestly, that’s why Luffy’s little speech to Merry while she was burning didn’t exactly win me over. Yes, her death had me crying too, but Luffy was apologizing for things Usopp never should’ve been lumped into. He was the one constantly worrying about patching her up, while Zoro and Sanji went at it and made things worse, and Luffy wasn’t exactly mindful either: like ramming her straight into a whale at the very start. Ugh. Captain, my Captain. šŸ™„
The defense is alwaysĀ Merry was the last thing from homeĀ orĀ Merry was a gift from Kaya, and like. Why is he saw her as a living crew mate not enough. Why is he refused to abandon a loved one not enough. Usopp heard her voice, he wanted to fulfill her desire to keep adventuring with them, he poured his heart and soul into fixing her so she could keep going and in the process loved her so much that she developed a consciousness, WHY IS THAT NOT ENOUGH

hello, i saw on ur blog. (this one and the main one) you were looking for the old user by the name @usolu…were you able to dig up anything? i do understand that people leave social media and any reason is a good one but i can see why you’d miss them. my second ask already 😭
sorry if im being weird. i like usopp lovin’ ā¤ļø
– blue šŸ’™
Oh, hey! 😊 You’re fine—ask away šŸ’ƒšŸ¾
@usolu was a rare Usopp-centric voice who made Water 7 bearable for me. Brave, funny, and unapologetic — there won’t ever be another like her. šŸ’›
(TL;DR šŸ‘‡šŸ¾)
But to answer your question: no, I haven’t been able to dig up much else. I do have links to some of her posts though (monie was the name @usolu went by—she/her pronouns). Sadly, I didn’t save much since I thought she’d always be here, so when I say SOME, I really mean ONLY. She deleted her Instagram and her main blog, and she even had a little site where she sold her art. From what I remember, she was a cook and was learning Spanish. She also mentioned getting hate on Instagram for her takes—especially for her disdain of certain ships and her calling out One Piece fandom double standards.
Honestly, I think it’s kind of great that she left on her own terms and disappeared without much of a digital footprint. There’s a world outside of all this, and she probably just outgrew the fandom—which is fine! Still, I wish I’d saved more of her posts. Even if she sometimes felt like she was talking to herself, her words always landed.
What really set @usolu apart was her true Usopp-centric lens. She didn’t sugarcoat anything. She called Water 7 dark, admitted the ending never sat right with her, and said out loud that Usopp deserved better. She wasn’t afraid to be critical of Zoro—or even Luffy—while still being fair. She brushed off the whole ā€œcrew hierarchyā€ talk and the tired right vs. wrong debate, and instead kept the focus where it belonged: on Usopp, and on fairness. That honesty was rare then, and it’s still rare now.
And while I don’t really ship in One Piece myself, I found her love for the rare pair of Luffy x Usopp endearing. She made beautiful art of them—I especially loved how she drew Usopp’s hair. Her art had this original, minimalist style that felt both fashionable and innocent.
If there’s a lesson here, it’s this: even if you think your blog is small or your art is ā€œmeh,ā€ someone out there values it. I was that person for her. Whenever I saw another terrible Water 7 take, I’d revisit her posts, and they always cut through the noise and made me feel seen again.
Ultimately, I think monie/@usolu just moved on from her One Piece days, and I honestly hope she’s doing well. Still, her voice left a real impact on me. She made Water 7 bearable because she said what so few others dared to: that Usopp deserved better. She loved him openly and unapologetically, never softening it, and she wasn’t afraid to critique the parts of the story that didn’t sit right—even if it meant calling out a so-called ā€œperfectā€ Straw Hat. And the best part is, she did it with humor and fearlessness, which made her stand out even more.
Her voice was the Malcolm X approach—blunt, fearless, and unapologetic. Me? I’m still more W.E.B. Du Bois with an MLK filter—measured, careful, and maybe too soft at times, haha. But that’s the strength she gave me: the push to be braver in standing up for Usopp.
There won’t ever be another like her. She was the Usopp fan who taught me it was okay to be angry at Water 7.
Hope you’re doing okay out there, monie. šŸ’›
Monie kept it real — I’m just trying not to water it down.

Your blog has been such a godsend, partially because I needed more Usopp-centric blogs to follow so I actually have quality Usopp related stuff consistently showing up in my FYP, but also because I really appreciate you going into the nuance and importance of his character.
My experience getting into One Piece individually for a while before going into the fandom lead to a bit of culture shock - I was stunned by some readings, how polarizing different takes on Usopp can be, and by how many people just don't appreciate him or straight up shit on him. Baffling. He's my darling, and I'm glad he is yours too, because that has led to the creation of an amazing blog, keep it up! :)
P.S. If you feel up for answering: what would be your specific pitch for the plot of the Usopp-centric movie that you want to see?
Hey, love! Thank you so much for taking the time to message me—and for appreciating this blog. It really did brighten my day.
And being honest? Even outside my own blog, I truly don’t think there’s a lot of actual focus on Usopp across most OP blogs or YouTube channels. (My mom and sister keep telling me to start a channel, but I’m not there yet. And let’s be real, the algorithm doesn’t like me 😭.)
No shade at all to other Usopp blogs—we all love him in our own way—but I still don’t think many really sit with him. Like, look at him through that unconditional lens I’m still hoping to see more of. There are a few blogs that scratch that itch, but I just need more.
Culture shock? Say that again, sweetie. When I first joined the fandom and fell for Usopp, I felt that he was the ā€œpunching bag.ā€ I hate that term, but it’s real. And if we’re being honest, there are biases at play. Usopp is Black-coded. So is Yasopp. And yeah, the reception they get... I’ve clocked it. It didn’t surprise me, but it did reaffirm a lot of things.
And Usopp isn’t just ignored—he’s threatening to the narrative people want. šŸ˜ And the takes that come out of that? I’ve cried over some of them.
Now listen—I always say, any Usopp fan is a friend of mine. But here’s my thing: if you’re gonna call him your comfort character, do it with pride. Not like, ā€œhe’s annoying sometimes, yeah he’s the weakest, not a god or monster like the rest, not the smartest, not the most important—but he’s my comfort character.ā€
That kind of language isn’t comforting. That’s backhanded. That’s apologizing for loving him. Stop making it sound like loving him is a guilty pleasure. šŸ˜ž It’s not. He’s the heart of this story. Say it with your chest.
And honestly? The way some people claim him as a favorite is so backhanded it makes me want to peel paint. Like they’re trying to earn fandom credibility for liking him—without actually respecting him.
Anyway. I do have a movie pitch—One Piece Film: Sniper Island. (I linked it here and on my blog.) But recently I told my sister—if they gave Usopp a movie, they’d have to treat it like the ā€œEden’s angelā€ kind of story.
And what I mean is this: yeah, people would say, ā€œIt’s filler, it’s not canon, Sanji deserved a real movie more,ā€ etc. But movies and filler give us what canon can’t always spell out.
Like how some biblical texts name the angel guarding Eden. Canon doesn’t name him—but those texts say it’s Uriel. And the name matters. Because what’s being named? It already exists. You’re not making it real—you’re acknowledging what’s always been true. Naming it makes it undeniable.
That’s what a Usopp movie could do. Confirm everything we already know.
Here’s the pitch: The crew’s sailing. Usopp’s telling a Sniper King story. Luffy and Chopper are eating it up. Others are over it. But later, Usopp gets kidnapped. Ends up on an island ruled by… Sniper King. ā€œWait—he’s real?ā€
Turns out, Sniper King has beef with Yasopp. Maybe it’s personal. The crew finds Usopp—but Usopp chooses to fight. He owns his cowardice like he did with Daddy Masterson. And he wins.
They offer him the title. He refuses. Says he has a crew to sail with. Luffy hugs him, proud. And as they leave, we’re left wondering if the island was real—or just in our hearts.
Cue montage: Syrup Village. His mom’s grave. Sniper King lore. A peek at Yasopp’s bounty. Maybe not everything fits in the runtime—but it’s enough.
And we’d finally get to say:
ā€œUsopp’s fodder? He got a whole movie, bruh.ā€
…
Alas, depending on what happens in canon, I will likely create a new pitch.
Thank you again, Anon! 😘

I don’t like ZoLu.Ā
When I first got into OP, I read some ZoLu fics here and there, but now I only tolerate ZoLu if it’s a background pairing with very little focus. When I read them, something always rubbed me the wrong way, and I think I can finally pinpoint what bothered me. They have a tendency to imply (some more purposefully than others) that Zoro is Luffy’s most important person, and that he is Luffy’s equal and the other crew members are not.Ā
