Fairy Names Pt. 2
Fly with you! It’s been a while hasn’t it? Anyway, I’m here for a second part of one of my most popular posts.
The first post listed fairy names that were used in the DS game “Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue” in the create-a-fairy section of the game. While the names provided were feminine, I have pulled all of the masculine fairy names from the original Pixie Hollow game. Some names are repeats from the original post, but I kept them in as I wanted to get this out as soon as possible. I hope you enjoy. Here’s the original post.

ALMOST LIVESTREAM: CAELAN CARDELLO/RUFUS REID, MEZZROW’S, 2 MAY 2024, both sets
I watched the first set as part of a bass-centric run that was my last of these souvenirs. I have returned for the second set in appreciation for RUFUS REID’s insistent taste and his young pianist’s potential and maturity. Both sets were solid and delightful.
The gem of the first set was Harold Mabern’s Grace of God which CAELAN CARDELLO offered in honor of his mentor. It had a gentle, well, grace with open chords. Set two’s was no less than Billy Strayhorn’s Chelsea Bridge which besides being even more graceful was one of several showcases for Reid’s cello-like bowing. The others? Just Con Alma and Sam Jones’ Seven Minds. The former prompted a reminiscence of a very young Rufus Reid who was along for the Dizzy 70th birthday tour with Phil Woods, Steve Turre (even younger, Bobby Hutcherson, probably Mike Longo, and Mickey Roker) and sheer admiration for the tune. Up Jumped Swing had such a nice lilt too. This was nimble music even with serious bass work going on.
Both sets opened with Cedar Walton tunes, nice opportunities for both of them to hook up those riffs that are distinctive in his compositions. Just one original in the second set, probably Cardello’s, whereas they each had one in the first set.
While I was there for Reid, Cardello earned his place at this table with enough power to stand up to the master and an ability to dance with him too. I can’t find any recordings of his, but he has some gigs in the Small’s archive including one from a couple of weeks ago with Sarah Hanahan. So I will attend to his work.
And this gig and the Reid/Sullivan Fortner duo album set are inspiration to put together an hour of piano/bass duos for Jazz Spectrum Friday to honor Mezzrow’s model, Bradley’s. This was well worth digging into.

JOHN HICKS TRIO 'I'll GIVE YOU SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY' (1988)
In the late 1980s, the renowned American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger John Hicks formed one of the most influential ensembles consisting out of musicians that had played music at the highest level all their lives and gained their status as both stand-alone artists and important sidemen. Each of them had participated in many of jazz’s great moments and all shared the ability, documented on many albums, to inspire their fellow musicians to even greater heights. The ‘John Hicks Trio’ had several line-up changes over the years that included greats such as Clifford Barbaro (Strata East, Blue Note, Sun Ra Arkestra, Charles Tolliver), Clint Houston (Prestige, Nina Simone, Roy Ayers, Azar Lawrence), Ray Drummond (Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, Lalo Schifrin), Marcus McLaurine (Muse, Verve, Weldon Irvine, Kool & The Gang) and Victor Lewis (Steve Grossman, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus, Cedar Walton, Chet Baker).
On the album we are presenting you today (I’ll Give You Something To Remember Me By from 1988) the trio consists out of some of the biggest and best players in the jazz, funk and soul scenes:
On piano we have the Atlanta based trio’s bandleader JOHN HICKS (1941-2006). He served as a leader on more than 30 albums and played as a sideman on more than 300 other recordings. After being taught piano by his mother, Hicks went on to study at Lincoln University of Missouri, Berklee College of Music, and the Julliard School. After playing with a number of different artists during the early ’60s (including Oliver Nelson and being part of Pharoah Sanders’s first band) he joined Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers in 1964. In the early ’70s he taught jazz history and improvisation at Southern Illinois University before resuming his career as a recording artist. Next to his many solo recordings for labels such as Strata East and Concord, Hicks would collaborate with all the big names in the scene, including Archie Shepp, Mingus and Alvin Queen. In 2014 & 2015, J Dilla paid homage to John Hicks by sampling two of his songs.
On drums we have the legendary IDRIS MUHAMMAD (1939-2014) who to this day is still considered as one of the most influential drummers covering a multitude of genre-transcending styles. Born in New Orleans, he showed early talent as a percussionist and began his professional career while still a teenager, playing on Fats Domino’s ‘Blueberry Hill’. He then toured with Sam Cooke and would later go on to work with Curtis Mayfield. Next to his landmark solo recordings for Prestige Records, Idris would collaborate with iconic musicians and acts from the likes of Manu Dibango, Ahmad Jamal, Melvin Sparks, Charles Earland, Walter Bishop, Ceasar Frazier, Roberta Flack, Gato Barbieri, Nathan Davis, Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Galt MacDermot, Lonnie Smith…and countless others. Idris Muhammad’s work was sampled by renowned performers such as Drake, Beastie Boys and Fatboy Slim.
On bass we have CURTIS LUNDY (born 1955) who originates from Florida. Lundy is a well-respected bass player (and a master of his instrument), choir director, arranger, composer and producer who was part of performances and recordings of renowned acts and artists such as Pharoah Sanders, Frank Morgan, Cole Porter, Chico Freeman, Khan Jamal… and many others!
On I’ll Give You Something To Remember Me By (recorded at the legendary Dutch Studio 44 in March 1987 and released on Limetree Records in 1988) the listener is treated to eight majestic tracks of the highest caliber (including an excellent Thelonious Monk cover-tune) and features a remarkable outing of advanced musicianship by three jazz-giants in their prime, delivering an inspirational gem of an album.
These recordings sound as successful, young and vibrant as ever! Expect supercharged ragtime Post Bop with striking notes, no-holds-barred musicianship, high swinging solos, screaming choruses and plenty of solid virtuosity to spare. The up tempo none stop Latin beat is complimented by the terrific drum solos of Idris Muhammad and the rhythmic bass stokes of Curtis Lundy. This electrifying set of tracks makes this release a bonafide hit and a must have for any self-respecting jazz fan or collector.
Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the FIRST ever vinyl reissue of this classic jazz album (originally released in 1988). This reissue comes as a deluxe 180g vinyl edition (strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide) with obi strip…also present are the exclusive pictures shot by legendary Dutch photographer Frans Schellekens (known for his work with artists such as Chet Baker, Alice Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and Sonny Rollins). i can’t believe i’m doing this
@jhscdood listen i got No Time to write the fics for this right now, but have some Fellowship of the Pod People (but not like that) Headcanons.
@ all of the rest of you, please for Eru’s sake help yourselves: literally nothing would make me happier than to have someone else write this shit so i could read it like the lazy asshole i am.
None of this will make a DAMN LICK OF SENSE if you aren’t familiar with the Not Your Mama’s ABO Clownfish AU that @silentwalrus1 created with @skellerbvvt and @galwednesday in the Magnificently Weird MCU Stucky Gem Scents & Sensibility
shit this got hella long don’t look at me but please all feel free to correct/expand/modify because I just whipped these off to decompress after a long day
The Númenóreans are responsible for all that “reef” “pod” and assorted “fishy” terminology, so while “pod” “reef” etc may be the accepted academic names, they’re often replaced with local variants and colloquialisms. The Númenóreans picked this linguistic quirk up from the sea-obsessed Noldor elves, so it’s sometimes used in Rivendell and Lothlorien too.
(The Sindar elves fucking hate that)
(Sindar use bee euphemisms instead. It’s all “hives” and “skeps” etc etc etc. Try to tell me Thranduil isn’t a Queen Bee. I FUCKIN DARE U. The wine is all honey mead. Hex honeycomb aesthetic for the win. Even the dungeons.)
(FYI Dwarves ALSO have a Hexagonal Aesthetic and that just Really Gets Thranduil’s Goat.)
everyone’s got their own local names for alphas and omegas too because seriously who fucking came up with that, i bet there’s a whole appendix at the end of the red book about terminology and shit
(Now I’m having meta thoughts about linguistics and there being a clownfish!Tolkien to go with the clownfish!Middle Earth. And now I’m thinking about the Inklings being a pod and if i follow THAT rabbit hole any further I’ll fu cki ng  AS C E N DHJKfghjk.)
Anyway
Men smell gross. Everyone else is agreed upon this. Unflattering comparisons to badgers and weasels have been made.
This makes “MANFLESH” 12000% more hilarious ur welcome
it’s funny cuz Men are big into perfumes. Incense! Herb Sachets! Oils and tinctures! Have you ever seen a olde tyme perfumers’ box? That kinda shit. Everyone has their Signature Smell.
but elves especially are like you still smell like man stop trying to hide it.
The Dúnedain embrace The Musk. (some have fully weaponized it)
this is very important: Aragorn Smells Amazing. (to be clear, still very Man Smelling, but awesome. first time he goes all I AM UR KING everyone in the throne room goes a little glassy eyed.)
Minas Tirith, being old, is very Old Numenorean Oceanic Aesthetic. Give me all that white stone carved to look like coral and driftwood holy shit YES.
WHITE! TREE!! GARDEN!!!
ATHELAS!!!! SCENTED!!!!! EVERYTHING!!!!!! (pairs well with lemon and other citrus smells.)
veering away from Gondor now
The Rohirrim stick with horse metaphors because of course they fucking do. Also, since they’re more nomadic, the entire concept of a “reef” as in a physical structure is kind of ??????? to them. So. “Reefs” = “herds” and “pods” = “bands.”
Fresh Hay is considered to be Peak Homely Smell in Edoras. Tapestries! Only The Softest and Nicest and Most Beautifully Tooled leather! leather smells!
OH SHIT GIVE ME ALPHA-FOR-LIFE-EOWYN MEETING FOREVER!OMEGA FARAMIR *HEAVY BREATHING*
(oh shit while we’re in the neighborhood, Dúnedain Rangers tend to be solitary As, which spooks the natives like whoa, but the Ithilien Rangers are generally O, and their waterfall hideout is totes a big ole reef.)
hang on i forgot about elves
Listen, I’m not super into elves myself but I’m imagining that they are perpetually switching back and forth between A and O depending on the day — nay, the HOUR — and the extremes between A and O are much less extreme for them than other races.
Every other race finds this super weird and disturbing.
Legolas is like “hm this forest is making me feel very O.” And Aragorn and Gimli are just like ‘what’ and then suddenly Leggy smells very O too and Aragorn and Gimli are like ‘WHAT’
Feänor is the exception. He turned the dial all the way to A and broke the goddamn knob off.
Galadriel can go from Maximum Softe O to Roid Rage A in .0004 seconds. “iiiinstead of a dark lord yyYYOU WOULD HAVE A QUEEEEEEN!!!1!” and the Hobbits are literally bowled over.
Elves in general smell woody but also very ocean-y i think? Have you ever stood in a pine forest by the ocean, where you get those light, clean wood and cedar and pine smells all shot through with sea breeze? Like That.
But elves are more into visual/audio. Soft singing. Leaves moving in the breeze. The whisper of pages in a library.
and the light. Elves are lighting wizards, they are all about that gentle starglow.
(I’m also having thoughts about the Lothlorien Elves embracing that A-ish urge to be Up High. A holdover from Galadriel’s time with the feanoreans? I'm not as up on silm lore as I should be)
but let’s get back to my happy place:
THE MUTHAFUCKIN SHIIIIIIIIRE
Hobbits really embrace dat sweet sweet O lifestyle. good food and warm hearths. throw blankets and pillows. hugging and cuddle puddles and playing footsie. gardens. Gardens. G A R D E N S.
“Going A” is done as rarely as possible. the transition takes about a month and Hobbits who are “going A” tend to call in sick like it’s some unsightly thing.
Tooks have an unusually high rate of going A. Of course they do.
Bilbo has never gone A. Not! Once!
Neither has Frodo.
Sam did, after the breaking of the Fellowship. Merry and Pippin did, in Fangorn, when they grew six inches. The three of them all stayed A after that, for the most part. YES EVEN SAMWISE. it was v scandalous.
Hobbit “reefs” are called “warrens” (unless ur rich, then they’re Smials and they’re Only For Family) and their “pods” are “nests.” “Nesting” is a whole Thing.
Hobbits! Smell! Like! Baked! Goods! Not sweet but like… warm. Humans sometimes turn their noses up and call it a “yeasty” or “beery” smell but it’s usually much more a rising-bread smell. Pipeweed smoke and sweet florals make a nice contrast to the perpetual bakery window smell.
Hobbits are very mouth/taste/chew oriented. Mouthfeel is a Big Deal. Recipe Books are Heirlooms. Courting is frequently Food/Drink Oriented.
Rosie Cotton brews the finest ale in all the land and she did that for the express purpose of seducing Samwise Gamgee
He Did Not Realize.
Courting that is not food/drink oriented is Flower/Plant oriented.
Sam Gamgee became the finest gardener in all the land in the desperate hope of wooing Mr. Frodo.
He Did Not Realize.
Everyone Else Realized. Merry and Pippin especially considered it Peak Comedy.
(they eventually worked it out.)
last but not least:
there’s just no way around it. Dwarves smell like dirt. nice dirt tho! Petrichor and stone with hints of copper and metals. Smoke smells. Rich spice smells. Eau de forge is considered a particularly desirable perfume. Dwarves don’t particularly notice smell though (for reasons that will become apparent) when it comes to Softe Things they’re much more about dem sweet sweet sparklies, and fur, and being super fucking tactile.
Dwarves are SUPER into haircare, like, every night the Company of Thorin makes a braid circle and exchanges hair beads.
(elves are also super into hair care. this too really Gets Tharanduil’s Goat)
Dwarf social structure is like… hobbits in reverse. They tend to default to A status, hence their general rowdiness but with strict codes of conduct to help manage conflict. They’re just these huge roving groups of A’s just rough-and-tumbling around their one O. dogpiles are peak pod bonding. aaaaand the alpha reek kind of tends to make them all a little noseblind.
Poor Bilbo.
Lucky, Lucky Bilbo.
But also poor, poor Bilbo.
Most dwarf Royals go O, but Thorin hadn’t been O since he was 24 and got chased out of Erebor by that pesky dragon.
Dwarf “reefs” and “pods” have their own terms in Khuzdul that do not translate well but have to do with crystal growth. Rough translations are “lattices” and “cells” (Hence the hexagon aesthetic)
Wizards Have No Designation. They Smell Like Gunpowder and Lightning. It Is Very Disturbing For Everyone Around Them.
A
N
Y
W
A
Y
Give me EveryoneLives!au Hobbit stuff. Bilbo trying to homely up the lonely mountain! Thorin going O and chilling the fuck out as a result!
Give me fellowship!pod!! Aragorn is the diplomat! Pippin is the wild child! Gimli is the Adventurer! Frodo is the peacekeeper! Boromir is the den mother!
How Much More Heartrending is the Breaking of the Fellowship if the fellowship was a pod????
and then you’ve got the fractured podlings: Merry and Pippin bonding hard with their new Rohan and Gondor stress-pods. Sam going A to protect Frodo from Gollum while Frodo tries to adopt this weird frog into their pod. The Three Hunters as Nick, Nora and Nelson (Gimli is Nick, Leggy is Nora, Aragorn is Nelson.)
Give me post-war Legolas and Aragorn and Gimli (and Arwen too) breaking cultural boundaries and proving that yes! Interracial Pods Can Work! these differences are cultural, and cultures can be melded! nothing wrong with this! if half-elves exist and can have kids of their own, then elves and men are not separate species, and I’d bet a significant limb that the same is true of all the other races so
GIVE IT TO ME
ok i gotta stop now.
...
yeah there’s probably a star trek one of these coming too
kill me
(And hey jhscdood I’m not saying you have to come back at me with more lotr clownfish or ocean’s 11/Star Wars/M*A*S*H/Leverage/West Wing/whatever clownfish But I would certainly consider it a Fair Exchange if you did. MORE INSTITUTIONALIZED SOFTISM. MAXIMUM SOFT FISH FRIENDS.)

Thoughts on Our Little World
So I happen to be rewatching season 11 right now… I think 11x06 has my favorite character things for an episode that wasn’t one of my favorite episodes. Like there are just little things about it that I love.
Cas in the very beginning actually reminds me a little of endverse!Cas. Mostly it’s the way he looks, totally out of it and dirty. But in both episodes he’s also an addict, miserable, and trying to deal with some pretty bad sh*t by just ignoring it with a little help from man-made crap. And that “Oh, why would I leave? I've got everything I need right here.” And “man can’t live on caviar alone, Dean.” Were call-backs to endverse!Cas’s brand of logic-with-a-bit-of-a-bite and empty apothegms. Plus Dean’s responding “Well you sound weird, okay? Bad weird” cinched it for me. It just really brought me back, and boy was it depressing.
Although I have to also say, I love that it actually shows Cas having PTSD-like flashbacks; that’s kind of the closest we ever get to acknowledging how traumatized Cas really is.
I detest Metatron calling him a “wuss” and a “Nancy” because of it… but at least it’s A Thing™ I guess? And Cas does get to voice his disagreement—I mean, he gets to assert his view of it physically, if not verbally and that gave me goosebumps… in a good way or a bad way I never could figure out… but anyway that’s a tangent. I just love Cas, okay, I just love the fact that he’s in this episode at all I think…
Back to the little things!
This is also the ep where we get the “summer of love” with Crowley line from Sam—the gift that keeps on giving. Which was only prompted by Dean knowing Crowley so well it’s embarrassing. Not to mention that Dean is so extra about Crowley this episode: may I present as evidence Dean ready to kill Crowley over Cedar Rapids* and the just-the-wrong-side-of-weirdly-aggressive “A padlock you'd find on a middle-school locker.” And who could forget that chuck darn voicemail Dean played:
Hey, idiot, andale -- Spanish for "get your ass over here." You think I've been paying your astronomical bar tabs for the past five weeks so you can sleep past noon with last night's skank? Well, Dean?
I still laffin over this.
And that’s not even going into Crowley’s dramatic monologue about his bromance with Dean and recurring inability to kill him.
*I assume this is referring to the whole “Father” and “Scrumptious Alter-boy” thing in Form and Void, and I guess maybe there was an element of betrayal with the whole Amara thing too.
And then there’s sweet Sammy trying to save all the demon meatsuits and finally just being like… “alright, two out of three.”
I’ll be honest, this is an episode I pretty much forgot about because nothing happens—also it’s the ep with the weird teenage Amara stuff so maybe I actually repressed it (I’m actively ignoring that right now and it’s hard)—but it’s got some little sparkly gems I’m going to hoard, thank you very much.

Camp is Turned Gorgeous With This Cedar Lakes Estate Wedding
Imagine the rugged beauty of Hudson Valley paired with a breathtaking camp-like backdrop of Cedar Lakes Estate, plus a truly gorgeous wedding day and you get this gem planned by SociaLife. The layers upon layers of white florals by Faye + Renee are tucked inside Brklyn View's imagery. See the FULL GALLERY and be sure to carve out some time for the film by NST Pictures as well.
Cedar Lakes Estate is one of those dream venues because everywhere you look it's picture perfect. From the mountain top views, to the outside amphitheater, gorgeous outside garden, adorable cabins and of course, the beautiful lake the venue sits on so when Megan and Sam reached out to me about capturing their wedding day I was beyond excited.
They are the most gracious, kindest and genuine couples I have every had the pleasure of working with and so honored they chose me to photograph their amazing wedding weekend at Cedar Lakes Estate. They put together a stellar collection of wedding vendors and created a true dream team. Socialife Events planned an coordinated the entire weekend and Faye and Renee Floral and Events created truly spectacular florals for the happy couple.
Megan wore a gorgeous lace wedding dress from Monique Lhuillier and crystal encrusted nude flats from Christian Louboutin. When the couple shared their first look on the mountain top, it was truly breathtaking. Sam could hardly speak after seeing his gorgeous bride! The weather was perfect for their mountain top ceremony and outdoor poolside cocktail hour.
Inside the reception space, Faye and Renee created the most amazing hanging floral installation over the couples head table. One of my favorite places at Cedar Lakes Estate is the dock sitting on the lake and I made sure to take Megan and Sam there for their bride and groom photos. Seriously, some of my all time favorite wedding photos for one of my all time favorite couples.
Megan and Sam met when they were teens, then again in college and then finally a few years later, they got together - FOREVER! They are the real deal and going to grow old together and I cannot wait to be part of their lives and capturing all the big milestones these newlyweds are going to create. Congratulations Newlyweds!

Best places to eat and drink in Japan: readers travel tips

Best places to eat and drink in Japan: readers travel tips
It might not be hard to find great sushi in Tokyo, or a gem of a saki bar, but where would you go for the best okonomiyaki pancakes, takoyaki octopus balls, gold ice-cream or udon noodles?
Winning tip: Takoyaki, Nishiki Market, Kyoto
Ive eaten the most rarefied meals of my life in Japan, but its hard to beat the charms of a 2 portion of takoyaki fluffy balls of eggy batter studded with boiled octopus, ginger and spring onion in a polystyrene tray. These are anointed with takoyaki sauce (Japans answer to HP) and mayonnaise, then sprinkled with dried pink bonito (skipjack tuna) flakes, which writhe in the heat emanating from the molten core. You spear each ball with a notched cocktail stick and nibble while trying to avoid singing your lips. Its like eating mouthfuls of octopus-flavoured cloud. Osaka invented them, but you can find them pretty much everywhere in Japan. Among the best are the ones served in Kyotos Nishiki Market, where you buy a ticket from a vending machine before placing your order with the cook juggling the golden balls. MoragR
Tofu temple, Kyoto
Photograph: Guardian Witness/MoragR
You need a good-luck talisman (and some instructions printed from the internet) to find Shoraian, hidden in the glorious Arashiyama mountains to the west of Kyoto. To reach it I followed the jade waters of the Hozu river, then took a steep path into the forest to a lonely hillside clearing with a wooden house, which seems to belong in a fairytale. Shoraians fame rests on its tofu-based menu. It sounds ascetic, but this is Japan, where simplicity means invention and elegance. All its tofu is made in-house, which results in something completely unlike the stuff packaged in supermarkets. We ate in a room overlooking the river and shaded by rustling trees. We chose the cheapest of the set menus, at around 25 per head (lunch is always a more affordable option than dinner in Japan). The meal starts with homemade plum wine served with a scoop of tofu as creamy as burrata, served with a pinch of salt. Vegetarian delicacies follow, an artwork on a plate. Then a bowl called sunrise, served with a calligraphy poem, based on a preserved egg as bright as a pocket-sized sun. Then comes yudofu (tofu hot-pot) blocks of tofu simmered in tasty broth. Dessert is tofu ice-cream nutty, toffee-ish and textured. I will never eat a more magical meal. Ukyo-ku, Kyoto-shi, +81 75 861 0123, shoraian.com MoragR
Sushi Tokami, Ginza, Tokyo
Hiroyuki Sato preparing sushi at Tokami. Photograph: Guardian Witness/pfrosty
Ginza is where the best sushi places in Tokyo are found and must be among the best in the world. Sushi Tokami is my pick of the lot, run by Michelin-starred Hiroyuki Sato, one of the young guns of the sushi scene, who loves a joke and is happy to chat and explain while making exquisitely flawless nigiri. The place is a tiny basement affair with 10 seats in total but when you also learn that Tokami means 10 gods then you realise this restaurant is a small but beautiful offering to the world of sushi. Jumanji 55, Roppongi, Tokyo
Photograph: Facebook
You dont get much better than Roppongi for a fun cheap night out in Tokyo. For just 6 you can drink as much as you like here for four hours, and the service is fantastic. It has everything: bizarre interior design, a fine selection of western and Asian music and a real buzz. It also has a great selection of traditional snacks. 3-10-5 Mariner building 1F, +81 3 5410-5455, jumanji55.com Natasha Alexa Searle
Bar Track, Ebisu, Tokyo
Ebisu is known for its izakayas (informal bar and eating joints) and as a cool spot away from the crowds of Shinjuku and Shibuya. A simple sign saying Bar on a nondescript building leads to a warm and hushed interior. Theres a huge selection of rare Japanese and Scotch whiskies and US bourbons. The bartenders play old jazz and blues records from a collection of thousands through vintage wooden speakers. There are simple bar snacks to keep you going banana chips, wasabi peas and rice crackers.

Kushiya monogatari, Shinjuku, Tokyo

This is a brilliant restaurant in the Shinjuku area offering a range of tabehodai and nomihodai (all you can eat/drink) options. It specialises in kushiage various meats, veg and fish on skewers. Each table has a small fryer in the middle, you pick out the skewers you want and batter/fry them yourself at your table. The best thing is you can have as much as you want in 90 minutes for about 2,500 (15.50) including drinks. I have eaten in many different types of restaurant in Japan but this definitely ranks at the top of my list. Not only is the food excellent but it is a fun and unique dining experience and great value for money. 1-3-1 Nishi-Shinjuku, 5th fl, Sunflower Bldg, +81 3 5321 6166, sunnypages.jp Roy Searle
Sushibar Hamacho, Nozawa Onsen
Photograph: Alamy
Nozawa Onsen is a great little ski resort, still very traditional. Its tiny streets have a great selection of eating places. My favourite was Sushibar Hamacho, a one-room place with seating at the bar or on the floor of a raised, matted platform. The place is usually busy with seemingly random opening hours. But the fresh, plump salmon and tuna are beautifully presented and of perfect quality, taste and texture. Four of us shared the platter and then polished off another one. Most meals cost around 9. 9519 Toyosato Nozawaonsen-Mura, +81 2 6985 2591 buryboy
Hida beef and sake in Takayama
Photograph: Getty Images/AWL Images RM
Kill two culinary birds with one stone with a visit to Takayama, a historic town in the mountains 200 miles west of Tokyo, famous for both its hida beef and sake. Once youve explored the numerous shrines and temples sprinkled around the surrounding hillsides, keep an eye out for the distinctive balls of cedar hanging from a building which signify a sake brewery; where the cedar ball has turned brown it means the sake is ready to drink. Several of the breweries offer tastings, and tasting cloudy sake is definitely an experience. In the evening, head to a specialist hida beef restaurant, such as Maruaki, to experience the best steak youll taste in your life. 6 Chome-8 Tenmanmachi, +81 577-35-5858, hidagyu-maruaki.co.jp cr7364
Noodles at Gamou-Udon, Shikoku island
Photograph: Alamy
For the true udon experience, go to Kagawa prefecture on Shikoku island. The signature foods here are soup and the al dente udon noodles. Gamou-Udon sits in the middle of farmland, dedicated to serving mainly udon and soba (thin buckwheat noodles) available only during its season from Nov-Apr. The menu is simple: small, medium or large noodles and you can add your own toppings (selection of tempura, fried bean curd and poached egg). I recommend to stay within three toppings to actually enjoy the noodles. This small hut that seats about 15 people gets very busy. People come, slurp the noodles and leave. Locals as well as Japanese tourists queue up during lunch hour. If you go too late, they will run out for the day so go early. It doesnt do dinner. Best udon Ive ever had (Im Japanese). 762-0023 Kagawa-ken, Sakaide-shi Alvin K Shimoju
Somen noodles, Shodoshima island
The small island of Shodoshima off Okoyama often gets overlooked by visitors to the Seto inland sea who favour its nearby arty, even smaller, neighbour Naoshima. Shodoshima, however, is a food paradise, from roadsides lined with olive groves, to the smell of sesame oil wafting through the air; food is central to life here. Highlights for visitors include Yamaroku, a small family soy sauce producer who estimates the age of its business through the ancient barrels its soy sauce ferments in. It is free to visit and you can climb up and look into the dark vats as well as sample a delightful spectrum of soy sauce products. Around the corner you will also find Nakabuan, a local somen noodle-maker where you can watch the thin wheat-flour noodles being hand-rolled, while eating the one dish on the menu, a bowl of fresh somen with dipping sauce. Gold ice-cream, Kanazawa
Photograph: Guardian Witness/Claire Mason
The opportunity to indulge in a golden ice-cream is rare; but not here in Kanazawa. The city was spared from bombing during the second world war and has managed to retain its historic districts and charm. It produces almost all of Japans gold leaf, and there must be a surplus because its even used as an ice cream topping. You can buy the creamy, gold ice-cream from various stands in the historic parts of town. Claire Mason
Okonomiyaki pancakes, Hiroshima
Photograph: Getty Images/AWL Images RM
Street food has been mainstream in Japan for a while now, with variations on savoury pancakes in the 20 or so eateries in Hiroshimas Okonomiyaki building a classic example. Combining whatever ingredients you want fried up with fish stock and cabbage pancake mix is an unpretentious meal, eaten off up-turned beer crates while sat around the hot plate. The snack is highly visual, with a pizza-size lattice of mayonnaise and tangy sauce mingling with oscillating tuna flakes sizzling away. Yours for 7. Tayls79

JOHN HICKS TRIO 'IS THAT SO?'
The ‘John Hicks Trio’ had several line-up changes over the years that included greats such as Clifford Barbaro (Strata East, Blue Note, Sun Ra Arkestra, Charles Tolliver), Clint Houston (Prestige, Nina Simone, Roy Ayers, Azar Lawrence), Curtis Lundy (Pharoah Sanders, Frank Morgan, Cole Porter), Marcus McLaurine (Muse, Verve, Weldon Irvine, Kool & The Gang) and Victor Lewis (Steve Grossman, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus, Cedar Walton, Chet Baker).
On the album we are presenting you today (Is That So? from 1991) the trio consists out of some of the biggest and best players in the jazz, funk and soul scenes:
Next to his many solo recordings for labels such as Strata East and Concord, Hicks would collaborate with all the big names in the scene, including Archie Shepp, Alvin Queen, Mingus and Curtis Lundy. In 2014 & 2015, J Dilla payed homage to John Hicks by sampling two of his songs.
Next to his landmark solo recordings for Prestige Records, Idris would collaborate with iconic musicians and acts from the likes of Pharoah Sanders, Manu Dibango, Ahmad Jamal, Melvin Sparks, Charles Earland, Walter Bishop, Ceasar Frazier, Roberta Flack, Gato Barbieri, Nathan Davis, Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Galt MacDermot, Lonnie Smith…and countless others. Idris Muhammad’s work was sampled by renowned performers such as Drake, Beastie Boys and Fatboy Slim.
On bass we have RAY DRUMMOND (born 1946) who originated from Massachusetts. Drummond was a well-respected bass player (and a master of his instrument), composer, arranger, bandleader, educator and producer who was part of performances and recordings of renowned acts and artists such as Pharoah Sanders, Horace Tapscott, Art Farmer, George Coleman, Leon Thomas, Johnny Lytle, Freddie Hubbard, John Hicks, Houston Person, Toots Thielemans, Lalo Schifrin, Art Blakey…and many others!
The ‘Is That So?’ album was recorded at the legendary Studio 44 (Holland) in July 1990 and released on the Dutch label TIMELESS in 1991. On this amazing piece of work you’ll find ten majestic tracks (including an excellent Sonny Rollins cover-tune). The album was produced by John Hicks and Timeless Records owner Wim Wigt and is a remarkable outing of advanced musicianship by three jazz-giants in their prime, delivering an inspirational gem of an album. Is That So? sounds as successful, young and vibrant as ever! Expect supercharged Post Bop with striking notes, no-holds-barred musicianship, high swinging solos, screaming choruses and plenty of solid virtuosity to spare. The up tempo none stop Latin beat is complimented by the terrific drum solos of Idris Muhammad and the rhythmic bass stokes of Ray Drummond. This electrifying set of tracks makes this release a bonafide hit and a must have for any self-respecting jazz fan or collector.
Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the FIRST ever vinyl release (these recordings were never issued on vinyl before) of John Hicks Trio “Is That So?”. This unique album comes as a deluxe 180g DOUBLE vinyl edition (strictly limited to 1000 copies worldwide) with obi strip. The jacket features exclusive pictures shot by legendary Dutch photographer Joost Leijen (known for his work with artists such as Chet Baker and Pharoah Sanders), also included is an insert with liner notes by renowned author and producer Russ Musto. This is also the FIRST time Is that So? is being released in North America and in the UK. Released exclusively for Record Store Day Black Friday 2021 and available in participating stores on November 26, 2021.

EASTERN REBELLION “EASTERN REBELLION” (1976)
In 1975, four legends teamed up and gave birth to one of THE best rhythm groups of the 1970s…four musicians that had played music at the highest level all their lives and gained their status as both stand-alone artists and important sidemen. Each of them had participated in many of jazz’s great moments and all four shared the ability, documented on many albums, to inspire their fellow musicians to even greater heights. In 1975, the EASTERN REBELLION collective was born.
On saxophone, we have GEORGE COLEMAN (born in 1935) the self-taught saxophone maestro from Memphis who (after working with Ray Charles) played in B.B. King’s band in the 1950s and in Miles Davis’ quintet in the 1960s. Coleman played on four historical Miles albums (including ‘My Funny Valentine’) within one year. George Coleman went on to perform and record with legends such as Charles Mingus, Ahmad Jamal, Idris Muhammad, Melvin Sparks, Nina Simone…and was an essential member of many more noteworthy groups throughout his freelance career. He was named a NEA Jazz Master, inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2015 and received a brass note on the Beale Street Walk of Fame
On the piano, we have CEDAR WALTON (1934-2013) who was also the bandleader & producer of the Eastern Rebellion collective. He was a Dallas-born Hard bop jazz pianist virtuoso who came to prominence as a member of Art Blakey’s The Jazz Messengers before establishing a long career as a bandleader, arranger and composer (several of his compositions have by now become much-played jazz standards). Walton was known for his fantastic recordings and performances and of course for being part of the in-house rhythm section at Prestige Records. Cedar Walton arranged and recorded for Etta James, helping her win a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 1994.
On bass, we have SAM JONES (1924-1981) who originated from Florida, but his career primarily revolved around the New York City Jazz scene. Jones was a well-respected bass player (and since the 1950s regarded without reservation as THEmaster of his instrument), cellist and composer who was part of performances and recordings of renowned acts and artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk…and many others for key-labels such as Blue Note, Strata East and Prestige.
On drums, we have BILLY HIGGINS (1936-2001) one of the in-house drummers for Blue Note and a well-known Hard bop & Post-bop freelancer who played on Ornette Coleman’s first records. Higgins played and recorded with greats such as John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Donald Byrd, Steve Grossman, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Milt Jackson, Pharoah Sanders, Max Roach, Freddie Hubbard, Toots Thielemans & Sun Ra…listing them all would be futile because in his career Billy Higgins played on over 700 recordings, transcending most genres.
The Eastern Rebellion album was recorded in New York City in December 1975 and released on the Dutch label TIMELESS in 1976. Timeless was (and is) ran by Ria and Wim Wigt who are patrons of the arts and very close with key jazz musicians around the globe…this was an important album for Timeless because it would become their first-ever release. Now 45 years later, the label is still standing strong after a long and prosperous career of releasing top recordings from all THE big names within the jazz genre.
On Eastern Rebellion (Vol.1) you’ll find four band-penned originals and an excellent John Coltrane cover-tune. The album was produced by Cedar Walton and Wim Wigt and is a remarkable outing of advanced musicianship by four jazz giants in their prime, delivering a gem containing five inspired and straight-ahead tracks. Three more volumes (depicting the same front-cover artwork) of the Eastern Rebellion jazz collective would follow between 1976 and 1984, and later another four on different labels (between 1992 and 1994). Some of those (at different times) would also feature other remarkable jazz players, but all albums included the winning Walton-Higgins combination.
Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the 45th-anniversary vinyl reissue of this historical and collectible album. Originally released in 1976, and out of print on vinyl since its last pressing back in 1985, these classic recordings are now finally back available as a limited 180g vinyl edition (500 copies) complete with the iconic original artwork & photography by Martin Bough.
Available worldwide May 28, 2021. Pre-order now from www.lightintheattic.net
