Say "NO" to Genocide - Call, email, mail your reps (Canada)
Me and my friend spent some time today writing letters to the House of Commons, plus we have been calling MPs daily. I haven't seen too many resources for this floating around on tumblr, so here's a lengthy guide on how to do this plus some sample scripts! Long post ahead since I think it will be most helpful to dump everything in one spot to reference. On desktop, use CTR F/CMD F to search for the topic -> Phone / Email / Letter Mail / Contacts / Demands / Scripts / Fax
Update 1 - Nov 23: Updated emails with "mailto" hyperlinks, edited demands, added fax section, added scotiabank pres fax number.
On the PHONE / General Tips
Introduce yourself and identify yourself as a constituent by providing your postal code or address.
Ask to speak to the MP directly, but do not be surprised if you must speak to the MP’s staff instead. Staff can help move your issue forward.
Give the reason for your call and explain your concern.
Focus on one or two main concerns per phone call. Do not unload on the MP or their staff with all of your political concerns at one time.
Ask clear and pointed questions that require some explanation.
Ask for a commitment to action.
KEEP IN MIND Tips for Calling MPs:
Tell the MP that this issue will matter to you in the next election.
Avoid revealing party affiliation or sympathies. If you show that your vote is already cast for a certain party, the MP may not have the incentive to respond to your requests.
Be as brief as possible while outlining concerns.  Show that you respect their time.
Remain calm and respectful in dialogue. Be willing to work with them.
Follow up: Find out what actions were taken as a result of your call, and respond appropriately.
(Source: CPJ.ca)
CJPME Call Tool - Fill in the form, there will be suggested talking point. The tool will call your phone and then patch you through to your MP. If voicemail, state your concerns in 30 seconds. No address input will default you to call Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly.
EMAIL
Be sure you sign your email with your name and mailing address so they know you are a part of their riding.
You will most likely receive a PR-type response or no response at all, but please still send these. It disrupts operations, and it still contributes to pressuring your MP to act on behalf of your riding.
LETTER MAIL
Mail may be sent postage-free to any member of Parliament at the House of Commons address. You just need to use an MP's full title if they are Cabinet members. Cabinet mebers have "The Honourable" attached to their names.
Postcards are efficient in that they are small pieces of card stock and can be a short message plus demands, no need to get use envelopes.
The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau House of Commons Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1A 0A6
CONTACTS
Find your MP - ourcommons.ca - Contact the MP of your riding, any of the contacts below, as well as any cabinet members in your city or province.
Prime Minister (613) 992-4211 / [email protected] *FAX: 613-941-6900 /*If faxes are closed at the House of Commons line, try their local offices! (See below under "FAX" for fax guide!)

DEMANDS
Summarized from resistance groups such as H/mas, H/zbollah, PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine), DFLP (Marxist Democratic Front got the Liberation of Palestine), CJPME (Canadians for justice and peace in the middle east), and other anti-war, anti-imperialist, IRL Palestinians.
Canada needs to...
Call an immediate PERMANENT ceasefire to end bloodshed
Send humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Institute embargo on all military exports to Israel
Close the embassies, and sanction Israel diplomatically and economically.
SCRIPTS
Use these as scripts for calling, emailing, and mailing. I suggest adding some of your own sentences and changing the subject lines (for email) so they don't end up in spam.
Example from Canada: Stop Arming Israel - World BEYOND War
As we mourn the thousands of people in Israel and Palestine who have been killed in the past few weeks we refuse to stand by and allow the only true winners in war — the weapons manufacturers — to continue to arm and profit off of it.
Canada exported over $21 million in military goods to Israel in 2022, including over $3 million in bombs, torpedoes, missiles, and other explosives. - 2022 Exports of Military Goods
Weapons companies across Canada are making a fortune off of the carnage in Gaza and the occupation of Palestine.
This is a call to action. It's time to stop letting these weapons companies profit off of the massacre of thousands of Palestinians. Find a location near you, get friends and allies together, and interrupt their business as usual to demand they stop selling arms and military technology to Israel.
Send an urgent message to demand Canada stop arming Israel and push for an immediate ceasefire to your Member of Parliament, the Prime Minister, and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Defense.
Dear [recipient's full name goes here], We are witnessing genocidal violence playing out in Gaza right now. Thousands of Palestinians have been killed, nearly half of them children. With a blockade on water, electricity, fuel and food, a quarter of all buildings razed to the ground, and over a million people displaced, UN experts have denounced Israel's actions as crimes against humanity. Meanwhile, weapons companies across Canada are arming -- and making a fortune off of -- the carnage in Gaza and the massacre of thousands of Palestinians by selling weapons and military technology to Israel. I am calling on you to do two things: to take immediate action to institute an arms embargo on Israel and to ensure Canada pushes for de-escalation and a ceasefire in Gaza. Sincerely,
Script Sample 2 from Palestinian Youth Movement
^This will open up a pre-written email in your chosen email app or site. Fill in the recipient line with the emails of MPs you wish to contact.
Script Sample 3 from CJPME's Email Campaign
^Complete the form to send an email to Prime Minister Trudeau, your local MP, and the leaders of the NDP, Convervatives and Greens. Canada must OPPOSE A SECOND NAKBA and dispossession of the Palestinians in Gaza by pushing for a ceasefire.
Script Sample 3 for mail:
(a mix of mine and a friend's)
I am writing to ask you to take immediate action to stop the genocide Israel is committing against Palestinians in Gaza as well as the onslaught of those in West Bank.
There is blockade on food, water, electricity, fuel, and the use of internationally banned white phosphorus to exterminate Palestinians. Aid is not able to enter Gaza because of this blockade. UN experts have named Israel’s actions as genocide citing numerous war crimes they continually commit.
While over 10k civilians have been martyr’d (4.2k of which are children), Canada has not even been able to NAME such crimes as genocide or call for an official ceasefire. This is not enough.
Canada needs to:
Call an immediate ceasefire to end bloodshed
Send humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Institute embargo on all military exports to Israel
Close the embassies, and sanction Israel diplomatically and economically.
FAX (NEW!)
Using faxzero.com is simple, just follow up the steps on the website. No fax machine required! Tell officials your demands and customize your letter by noting their complicity based on their role as a politician or gov official. Or keep it brief and simple, in large legible letters.
Demands could include:
That you are a “Canadian” constituent That you are demanding an IMMEDIATE AND PERMANENT CEASEFIRE IN GAZA; That you demand a total withdrawal of financial (taxpayer) and commercial support and arms for continued occupation in Israel’s 70+ year occupation in Palestine; That it is shameful that [X] is choosing not to speak up for the deaths of more than 11,000 Palestinians, half of whom are children and thousands of others displaced; That Palestinians like all people, deserve life, dignity and justice; That Israel is breaking multiple international laws daily and Canada MUST meet its international commitment to promote and defend human rights under the Geneva Convention; That not putting these actions in place will harm constituents and undo acts of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and other marginalized communities in Canada by not protecting the Indigenous peoples of Palestine; That unless there is concrete and everlasting action taken place, that there will be no peace until Palestine is free, and subsequently that you will not be voting for them (if applicable) in the next election.
Sign off with your name, address and postal code (if applicable, furthering that you are a resident on the stolen Indigenous lands otherwise known as “Canada”) Extended fax list: Scott thomson (president of scotiabank) - 416-866-5929 joe biden / whitehouse - 202-456-2461

Stop making these common payroll mistakes: 10 common payroll mistakes small businesses make
Tumblr media
Running a business in its early stages is accompanied by so many responsibilities. Dealing with taxes, paying employees on time, having correct records, and avoiding expensive errors.
Small businesses with no specialized HR or finance departments tend to make errors when it comes to payroll, potentially resulting in employee unhappiness, fines, or even legal complications.
In this article, we'll discuss in-depth some of the most common payroll mistakes small businesses make and how to steer clear of them.
1. Misclassification between employees and independent contractors:
One of the most prevalent payroll errors small businesses make is the misclassification of employees. The IRS has provided detailed explanations regarding who qualifies as an employee and an independent contractor.
Employees are entitled to benefits such as overtime compensation, unemployment benefits, and tax withholding; misclassifying them can lead to heavy fines, penalties and other tax reporting problems.
How to avoid it: Review IRS Form SS-8 and regulations, or having an expert payroll service or software can help you to properly classify your employees.
2. Missing Payroll Tax Deadlines:
Federal, state, and local governments require timely payment and reporting of payroll taxes. Delayed tax deposits or filings of forms such as Form 941 or Form W-2 result in significant fines and interest.
How to avoid it: Use a payroll calendar or payroll software that automatically calculates and pays taxes.
3. Miss Computing Overtime Pay:
Non-exempt employees who work more than 40 hours in a workweek are entitled to overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) at a rate of 1.5 times their regular rate. Legal issues like fines, penalties, and even serious lawsuits can result from inaccurate calculations or from failing to pay overtime.
How to prevent it: Familiarize yourself with federal and state overtime regulations and employ an effective time-tracking system.
4. Incorrect Timekeeping:
No matter if your business has hourly or salaried workers, monitoring work hours is important. Using outdated or manual systems can lead to
timekeeping mistakes that result in underpaying or overpaying workers, which affects your overall business.
How to prevent it: Having a computerized time-tracking tool that synchronizes with your payroll system can easily address this issue.
5. Not Keeping Correct Payroll Records:
IRS regulations have proper guidelines to keep payroll records for at least four years.
These include time cards, pay stubs, tax forms, and direct deposit authorizations. Inaccurate recordkeeping can lead to issues during audits or employee disputes.
How to avoid it: Maintain organized digital or paper files of all payroll activities and back up them securely.
6. Not staying compliant with current and evolving tax Laws:
Payroll legislation is constantly changing—minimum wage updates are just the beginning of new tax credits or reporting requirements. Small business owners usually don't catch these changes, especially if they do payroll manually.
If you don't keep up with the changing tax laws, it can result in fines, audits, or even lawsuits.
How to fix it: Enroll in the Department of Labor (DOL) or IRS notification, or payroll software that automatically stays up-to-date with law changes.
7. Incorrectly Issuing Forms W-2 and 1099:
Employers must furnish Form W-2 to employees and Form 1099-NEC to independent contractors at year-end. Errors in  Name, address, or Social Security number  can lead to IRS rejection or penalty.
How to avoid it: Double-check all employee information and utilize payroll systems that automatically generate forms.
8. No Accounting and Payroll Integration:
When payroll data is not being interfaced with your accounting software, it creates discrepancies in financial statements and tax filing. Out-of-sync numbers can result in bad decisions and IRS troubles.
How to avoid it: Select payroll software that interfaces with your accounting software, such as BDGSGSS, QuickBooks or Xero.
9. Disregarding final paycheck laws:
This is true for every state in the US, with distinct laws on when a final paycheck is required to be paid out after an employee is terminated. California and most states require payment immediately upon termination. Failure to abide by these laws will get you into serious hot water.
How to avoid it: Have knowledge of the final paycheck law in your state, and set up a procedure to conduct terminations properly.
10. Attempting to Do Payroll in Isolation:
Many small business owners attempt to do payroll by themselves to save money without the necessary knowledge. If you don't have a proper understanding of tax laws and compliance, it may end up costing you more in the long run.
How to avoid it: Experiment with a reputable payroll service or software, or hire out the task to a payroll expert.
Conclusion
Payroll may be complicated, but it is an extremely critical aspect of any organization.
By being aware of these common payroll errors and avoiding them beforehand, you can protect your company from unnecessary costs and ensure your staff are paid accurately and promptly.
If you are not comfortable doing payroll yourself, it is good to spend money on professional payroll software or to hire a payroll expert. It will definitely save your time, money, and a great deal of headaches.

Form 941 IRS Compliance: File Accurately in 2025
Tumblr media
As 2025 approaches, businesses must stay ahead of evolving tax regulations—especially when it comes to IRS compliance for employer tax filings. One of the most critical tax forms for employers in the United States is Form 941, the Employer's Quarterly Federal Tax Return. Filing this form accurately and on time is vital to avoid penalties, audits, and other legal complications with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about Form 941 in 2025, including deadlines, filing tips, common mistakes, and how to ensure IRS compliance throughout the year.
What is Form 941?
Form 941 is a quarterly tax return filed by employers to report wages paid to employees and the taxes withheld from those wages. It includes:
Federal income tax withheld
Social Security tax (employer and employee portions)
Medicare tax (employer and employee portions)
Additional Medicare tax withheld from high-income employees
Every employer who pays wages subject to federal income tax withholding or social security and Medicare taxes is generally required to file Form 941 each quarter.
Why IRS Compliance Matters in 2025
The IRS is increasingly focusing on accurate tax reporting and timely submissions. IRS compliance is not just about avoiding penalties—it’s about maintaining good standing as a business entity. Non-compliance, whether intentional or accidental, can lead to:
Penalty assessments
Interest charges
Tax liens
Possible audits
In 2025, changes in tax regulations and digital filing expectations make it even more important to be accurate with Form 941 filings.
Key Changes to Form 941 in 2025
While the core components of Form 941 remain the same, 2025 brings a few updates employers should be aware of:
Updated Tax Rates: Adjustments may occur in Social Security wage bases and Medicare thresholds.
Electronic Filing Encouragement: The IRS continues to promote e-filing for faster processing and fewer errors.
Credit Revisions: If your business is eligible for certain employment-related tax credits (such as the COBRA premium assistance credit or COVID-era programs), updates may reflect in the form.
Schedule B Reporting: For semiweekly depositors, Schedule B accuracy is essential to avoid late deposit penalties.
Stay informed by checking the IRS’s official updates regularly.
Filing Deadlines for Form 941 in 2025
Here are the Form 941 deadlines for each quarter in 2025:
Q1 (January – March): Due April 30, 2025
Q2 (April – June): Due July 31, 2025
Q3 (July – September): Due October 31, 2025
Q4 (October – December): Due January 31, 2026
If the due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the deadline is extended to the next business day. Employers must file the form and remit any taxes owed by these deadlines to remain compliant.
Step-by-Step Guide to Filing Form 941 in 2025
Gather Payroll Information
Include total wages paid, number of employees, and all federal income tax withheld during the quarter.
Calculate Social Security and Medicare Taxes
Report both employee and employer portions. For 2025, ensure you use updated thresholds.
Report Tax Liability
Include information about your tax deposits. If you're a monthly depositor, you won’t need Schedule B; if semiweekly, include Schedule B with details of each deposit.
Claim Tax Credits (If Applicable)
Businesses eligible for credits (e.g., sick leave, family leave) should accurately report them.
Review and Submit
Double-check all figures to avoid common filing mistakes.
Submit the form electronically via the IRS e-File system or mail it to the appropriate address.
Common Mistakes That Can Hurt IRS Compliance
1. Miscalculating Taxes
Incorrect Social Security or Medicare tax calculations can lead to underpayment or overpayment, both of which can trigger an IRS review.
2. Missing Deadlines
Late submissions result in penalties and interest, even if the underpayment is small.
3. Inconsistent Employer Information
Make sure the Employer Identification Number (EIN), business name, and address are accurate and consistent across all IRS forms.
4. Improper Claiming of Credits
Ensure you understand eligibility for any tax credits before claiming them. Incorrect entries can lead to audits.
5. Failure to Match Deposits with Reported Tax Liabilities
Mismatch between Form 941 and IRS records (especially Schedule B errors) often leads to penalty assessments.
Tips to Stay IRS Compliant with Form 941 in 2025
Use Payroll Software: Automate calculations and reduce human error.
Enroll in EFTPS: The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System helps track and confirm timely tax deposits.
Set Calendar Alerts: Remind yourself of deadlines ahead of time to prepare.
Consult a Tax Professional: Especially useful if your business claims credits or has complex payroll structures.
Stay Updated: Regularly review IRS publications or subscribe to updates about Form 941.
Who Needs to File Form 941?
Generally, any business that withholds income, Social Security, or Medicare taxes from employee wages must file Form 941. However, there are exceptions:
Seasonal employers (only required to file for quarters wages were paid)
Employers who annually file Form 944 (used for small employers with limited payroll liability)
What Happens If You Don't File Form 941?
Failing to file Form 941 can result in:
Late Filing Penalty: 5% of the unpaid tax per month, up to 25%
Late Payment Penalty: 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month
Interest: Accrued on top of penalties until payment is made in full
Possible Legal Action: In cases of willful non-compliance
Avoid these consequences by planning ahead and staying organized.
Form 941 vs. Form 944: Know the Difference
Form 941 is filed quarterly and is required for most businesses.
Form 944 is filed annually and is for businesses with small payroll tax liabilities (under $1,000 annually).
If unsure which applies to your business in 2025, consult the IRS or a tax advisor.
Conclusion
Staying on top of Form 941 IRS compliance in 2025 is essential for any employer aiming to maintain a clean tax record and avoid penalties. From understanding quarterly filing requirements to avoiding costly errors and leveraging available resources, proper handling of Form 941 is a non-negotiable part of responsible business management.
With proactive planning, timely filing, and accurate data reporting, your business can stay compliant and confident through each quarter of 2025. Whether you're a small startup or a large corporation, mastering Form 941 is a key part of IRS compliance—and your peace of mind.

Payroll Tax Management: Ensuring Compliance and Efficiency in Your Business
Managing payroll taxes is a critical responsibility for businesses of all sizes. Accurate and timely payroll tax management not only ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations but also helps businesses avoid costly penalties and maintain good relationships with employees and tax authorities. In this article, we will explore the importance of payroll tax management, the key components involved, and best practices for ensuring smooth and efficient payroll tax processes.
Tumblr media
What Is Payroll Tax Management?
Payroll tax management refers to the process of calculating, withholding, and remitting the required payroll taxes for employees. These taxes include federal, state, and local income taxes, Social Security, Medicare, unemployment taxes, and other deductions based on the jurisdiction in which the business operates. Proper payroll tax management ensures that employers comply with tax laws, meet deadlines for tax payments, and accurately report payroll taxes to the IRS and relevant state agencies.
Payroll tax management is essential not only for legal compliance but also for building trust with employees. Failing to manage payroll taxes effectively can lead to fines, interest charges, and damage to the company's reputation. Moreover, improper payroll tax management can result in overpayment or underpayment of taxes, both of which can create financial difficulties for the business.
Key Components of Payroll Tax Management
Payroll tax management involves several critical components, each designed to ensure that taxes are calculated accurately and paid on time. The following are the key elements of payroll tax management:
1. Employee Tax Withholding
The first step in payroll tax management is determining the appropriate amount of tax to withhold from an employee's paycheck. This includes federal income tax, state income tax (if applicable), Social Security, and Medicare contributions. The amount of withholding is generally based on the information provided by employees on their W-4 forms, including marital status, number of dependents, and additional withholdings.
Employers must also stay up-to-date on tax rates, which can change annually based on legislation passed at the federal or state level. For example, the Social Security tax rate can fluctuate, and new tax laws may impact employee withholding amounts. Employers are responsible for making these calculations correctly to ensure accurate deductions.
2. Employer Tax Contributions
In addition to withholding taxes from employees, businesses are also required to pay certain employer taxes. These taxes include the employer's portion of Social Security and Medicare taxes, as well as unemployment taxes. Employer contributions to Social Security and Medicare are typically matched dollar-for-dollar with employee contributions.
Unemployment taxes, both federal (FUTA) and state (SUTA), must also be calculated and paid. These taxes fund unemployment benefits for workers who become unemployed through no fault of their own. The rates for these taxes can vary depending on the state and the business’s history with unemployment claims.
3. Filing and Reporting
Payroll taxes must be reported to the appropriate tax authorities on a regular basis. This includes submitting reports to the IRS (for federal taxes) and relevant state and local agencies. Employers must file IRS Form 941 (quarterly) to report federal income, Social Security, and Medicare taxes withheld from employees. They must also file Form 940 (annually) to report unemployment taxes.
In addition to these forms, businesses may be required to file state-specific payroll tax forms, which vary by jurisdiction. For example, some states require employers to submit a quarterly payroll tax return or pay state unemployment taxes on a regular basis.
4. Timely Payments
Ensuring that payroll taxes are paid on time is crucial to avoid penalties and interest charges. The IRS and state tax authorities impose strict deadlines for tax payments. Employers are required to remit payroll taxes on a scheduled basis, either monthly, quarterly, or annually, depending on the size of their business and the amount of taxes owed.
Failure to make timely payments can result in penalties that add up quickly, increasing the financial burden on the company. Furthermore, delays in payment can trigger audits, which can be both time-consuming and costly.
The Importance of Payroll Tax Management
Effective payroll tax management is essential for maintaining financial health and legal compliance. Below are some of the key benefits of managing payroll taxes properly:
1. Avoidance of Penalties and Interest
One of the primary reasons for efficient payroll tax management is to avoid costly penalties and interest charges. The IRS and state tax agencies impose severe penalties for late payments or incorrect filings. For example, businesses that fail to remit payroll taxes on time may face penalties as high as 10% of the amount due, in addition to interest on overdue amounts. Consistent and accurate payroll tax management helps businesses steer clear of these financial burdens.
2. Compliance with Tax Laws
Staying compliant with federal, state, and local tax laws is crucial for businesses. Tax regulations are complex and can change frequently. Payroll tax management ensures that businesses adhere to these ever-evolving laws, minimizing the risk of non-compliance and avoiding legal issues. This is especially important for companies with employees in multiple states, as state tax laws can differ significantly.
3. Improved Cash Flow and Financial Planning
Proper payroll tax management helps businesses plan and allocate funds more efficiently. By ensuring timely payment of taxes and keeping track of tax liabilities, businesses can avoid surprises that disrupt cash flow. This can make it easier for businesses to manage their finances, make informed decisions, and budget accurately for future expenses.
4. Employee Satisfaction
Employees trust their employers to manage payroll taxes accurately, as it impacts their take-home pay and their future benefits, such as Social Security. By ensuring that employee withholdings are accurate and that the employer’s portion of payroll taxes is paid on time, businesses foster trust and goodwill with their workforce.
5. Avoiding Audits and Reviews
Tax authorities may conduct audits of businesses that have a history of inconsistent or improper payroll tax management. Accurate and timely filing of tax returns reduces the likelihood of being audited and helps businesses maintain transparency with tax authorities.
Best Practices for Payroll Tax Management
To effectively manage payroll taxes, businesses should follow several best practices that can help streamline the process and ensure accuracy:
1. Automate Payroll Tax Calculation
Investing in payroll software or outsourcing payroll services can help automate the tax calculation process. Payroll software tools can accurately calculate employee withholdings, employer contributions, and other deductions, reducing the risk of errors. Automation also ensures that tax rates are up-to-date, and reports are generated correctly and on time.
2. Stay Updated on Tax Laws
It is essential for businesses to stay informed about changes in tax laws, rates, and regulations. This can be done through IRS updates, state tax agency communications, or professional tax services. Staying current ensures that businesses are always compliant with the latest tax requirements.
3. Implement a Payment Schedule
Establishing a clear and consistent payment schedule for payroll taxes is key to staying on top of deadlines. Businesses should make sure to remit taxes on time, whether on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis, and keep track of all tax-related payments and filings.
4. Review Payroll Records Regularly
Regular audits and reviews of payroll records are essential for identifying discrepancies and ensuring that all tax obligations are met. Reviewing records ensures that the right amount of taxes is being withheld and that all necessary payments are made on schedule.
5. Consult a Tax Professional
If managing payroll taxes becomes overwhelming, businesses should consider consulting with a tax professional or accountant. A professional can ensure that taxes are calculated accurately, help businesses understand complex tax regulations, and assist with filings and payments.
Summary
Payroll tax management is a critical function that ensures businesses stay compliant with tax laws, avoid penalties, and maintain good relationships with employees and tax authorities. By implementing best practices such as automating calculations, staying informed about tax laws, and adhering to payment schedules, businesses can streamline payroll tax management and focus on growth and profitability. Proper payroll tax management not only minimizes financial risks but also contributes to a well-managed and sustainable business operation.

Payroll For Nonprofit Organizations: Special Rules
Tumblr media
Managing payroll for nonprofit organizations involves unique considerations and compliance with specific regulations that differ from those in for-profit entities. Here’s a comprehensive overview of the special rules and best practices to ensure nonprofit organizations manage payroll effectively:
Employee Classification
Proper classification of workers is critical. Nonprofits must distinguish between employees and independent contractors. Misclassification can lead to significant penalties and back taxes. Employees are subject to payroll taxes, while independent contractors are not.
Minimum Wage and Overtime
Nonprofit organizations must comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which mandates minimum wage and overtime pay. Some exemptions may apply, but generally, nonprofits must pay at least the federal or state minimum wage and overtime (time and a half) for hours worked over 40 in a workweek.
Payroll Taxes
Nonprofits are required to withhold federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare taxes from employees’ wages. They must also pay the employer’s share of Social Security and Medicare taxes. However, certain nonprofit organizations may be exempt from federal unemployment tax (FUTA) if they are 501(c)(3) organizations.
Exemptions and Special Considerations
Some employees of nonprofits may qualify for exemptions from FLSA requirements, such as executive, administrative, or professional exemptions. Volunteers who receive no compensation beyond reimbursement for expenses or nominal stipends are not considered employees and thus not subject to payroll taxes.
State and Local Laws
Nonprofits must also adhere to state and local labor laws, which may have different or additional requirements compared to federal laws. This includes state income tax withholding, state unemployment insurance, and disability insurance requirements.
Recordkeeping
Accurate and thorough recordkeeping is essential. Nonprofits must maintain records of wages paid, hours worked, and tax withholdings. These records are vital for compliance with IRS regulations and for internal audits.
Employee Benefits
Nonprofits often provide benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off. They need to ensure these benefits comply with federal and state laws. Special attention should be given to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements if the organization employs 50 or more full-time employees.
Grant and Funding Restrictions
Payroll funded by grants may come with specific restrictions or requirements. Nonprofits must carefully track and allocate salaries and wages according to grant stipulations, ensuring compliance with funding agreements.
Reporting and Compliance
Regular reporting to the IRS and other relevant agencies is required. Nonprofits must file Form 941 (Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return) and provide W-2 forms to employees and the Social Security Administration. They must also adhere to annual reporting requirements, such as Form 990.
Training and Education
Continual training and education for payroll staff are crucial. Nonprofit payroll regulations can change, and staying informed helps avoid compliance issues. Membership in professional organizations like the American Payroll Association (APA) can provide valuable resources and updates.
Best Practices:
Utilize Payroll Software: Invest in reliable payroll software tailored to nonprofit needs, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
Outsource Payroll Services: Consider outsourcing to a payroll service provider with expertise in nonprofit payroll.
Regular Audits: Conduct regular internal audits to identify and rectify discrepancies or compliance issues.
Clear Policies: Develop clear payroll policies and procedures to guide staff and ensure consistent application of rules.
By adhering to these special rules and best practices, and leveraging the expertise of payroll service companies in Oklahoma City, OK, nonprofit organizations can effectively manage payroll, ensuring compliance and maintaining their focus on their mission-driven activities.

Understanding Employee Retention Credit: Qualified Wages, Advances, Eligibility, Benefits, and Process
Employee Retention Credit (ERC) is a valuable tax credit introduced by the United States government to provide financial relief to businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This article aims to provide clarity on various aspects of ERC, including qualified wages, advances, eligibility, benefits, and the process of obtaining ERC funds.
What are Employee Retention Credit qualified wages?
Qualified wages refer to the compensation paid to employees by eligible employers during specific periods outlined by the IRS. These wages include certain health plan expenses but exclude wages covered by other COVID-19 relief programs, such as the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).
What is an advance against the Employee Retention Credit (ERC)?
Advance payment against the ERC is an option provided by the IRS to help eligible employers receive immediate financial support. Employers can request an advance of the anticipated ERC by submitting Form 7200, which can be filed multiple times if necessary.
Who is eligible for the ERC Business grant?
Eligibility for the ERC is primarily based on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a business. Generally, eligible employers include those who experienced a significant decline in gross receipts or had operations fully or partially suspended due to government orders.
What is the ERC grant?
The ERC grant refers to the tax credit that eligible employers can claim on their federal employment tax returns. It is a refundable credit that can be used to offset certain employment taxes, and any excess credit can be refunded to the employer.
Is ERC funding taxable?
No, ERC funding is not taxable. However, the wages used to calculate the ERC are considered deductible expenses, meaning they can't be claimed as both qualified wages for ERC and as a deduction for the same wage expense.
What is the benefit of ERC?
The ERC provides significant benefits to eligible employers, including financial relief, allowing them to retain employees and maintain their workforce during challenging times. It can also help businesses recover and rebuild by offsetting certain employment taxes.
Is ERTC the same as ERC?
Yes, ERTC (Employee Retention Tax Credit) is an acronym used interchangeably with ERC. Both refer to the same tax credit program aimed at supporting businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why is it important to apply for the employee retention tax credit?
Applying for the ERC is crucial for eligible businesses as it offers substantial financial relief. It helps employers retain their employees, reduces the burden of employment taxes, and provides much-needed support during challenging economic conditions.
When should I expect my ERC refund?
The timeline for receiving an ERC refund depends on various factors, including the IRS's processing time and the accuracy of the information provided. Typically, the IRS strives to process refunds as quickly as possible, but it's advisable to consult with a tax professional or refer to the IRS guidelines for more accurate estimates.
How do I get ERC grant money?
To obtain ERC grant money, eligible employers must follow the process outlined by the IRS. They need to file the appropriate forms, such as Form 941 or Form 7200 for advance payments, and ensure they meet all eligibility criteria. It's recommended to consult with a tax advisor or refer to the official IRS resources for detailed instructions.
Conclusion:
Understanding Employee Retention Credit (ERC) is essential for businesses seeking financial relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. By comprehending qualified wages, advances, eligibility criteria, benefits, and the application process, employers can navigate the ERC program effectively and leverage its benefits to support their workforce and overall business operations. If you require further assistance or have specific questions related to ERC or other financial matters, consider reaching out to REIL Capital. Their team of experts can provide guidance and support in optimizing your eligibility for ERC and help you navigate the complex landscape of business funding and tax credits. There's a sweater hanging over the back of Wilbur's chair, and he wants it. He shifts, shaking his now flattened hair out, and picks it up. Before going anywhere, Tommy burries his face in the mint green fabric, breathing in.
It smells like Wilbur.
Wilbur is safe.
Tommy shifts back into his cat form, sinking his teeth into the sweater and dragging it with him. It takes quite some effort, since due to his small size and slightly stumble-y walking, dragging a heavy sweater is hard, but he manages to get it to the top of the stairs.
Or; Tommy and Wilbur are cat shifters, and they love each other. That's it, that's the fic.

Fictober Day 2
Prompt Number: 2 Fandom: The Elder Scrolls Rating: General Warnings/Tags: None Applicable. Word Count: 941
Day 2 of @fictober-event. I made it kind of sad. Oops.
Can also be found here on my ao3!
"Again!" The half-elf shouted cheerfully. Lirreah was standing at the far end of the little sparring pit, slightly bent over with her hands on her knees, catching her breath. An intense sparring session was not how she expected to spend one of the few stolen days she had with Zoyana, but here they were, in a sandy sparring ring they had made on the beach, on their fourth? Fifth? match. "You aren't tired?" Lirreah said with a breathy laugh, stooping to pick up the wooden staff she had been sparring with. Zoyana would snicker, twirling her own staff with a flourish. "No! Are you?" "Perhaps a little." The altmer said softly, straightening to her full height. "But I think I have one more in me." She would smile. That was all Zoyana needed, falling on her immediately. Lirreah was taken a little off guard, but recovered quickly enough - and off they would go. It started, at least, how their spars - including the last few ones - had normally did. They would go back and forth, neither one gaining advantage over the other, pushing each other to a limit, before one of them relented. In today's case, though, it went a little more in Zoyana's favor, her skill with a two-handed scythe making wielding a practice staff look like nothing. Lirreah was not too shabby with one, either, but her true strength was a sword and shield. And she was evidently more tired than her partner was, so it would not take long for the much smaller half-elf to gain the upper hand. Which was not a big deal, really, it was just a spar after all. But then, suddenly, and most certainly without meaning to, Zoyana struck her on the side - with a lot more force than Lirreah was expecting from a playful spar. - She had spent the day in the hot Summerset sun, training with one of - if not the harshest instructor on the isles - a Thalmor veteran that likely had never smiled in his life. Her aunt was overseeing the training, the reason that he was even here at all. Nothing less than the highest standard for a Silverbreeze. Even if that was coming at the cost of her physical well being. She had lost count of how many spars she failed to win, and how many times she had to pick herself up off the ground. Thirsty and tired, with pain singing through her every nerve - she was sent to the ground again; the blow to her side cracking her ribs audibly. Suddenly, it was very hard to breathe, the pain blotting out every other sense as she dropped to the ground; from which she did not get back up immediately. "Pathetic." The instructor said, a scowl on his cruel features. "Get up. Try again." She didn't move - simply  trying to ride out the pain before she had to face him again. "Get up, girl." Her aunt will call sharply, in her raspy, harsh voice. She still did not move. "Brat. I told you to get up - " He would stride over, to yank her up by her arm. - "I don't want to get up!" Lirreah called out, curled up on her side, on the warm sand of the beach. The beach- "Reah!" There was a concerned and familiar cry. It was - it was Zoyana. Before Lirreah could even attempt to get up, the half elf was kneeling down beside her. "Hey, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hit you that hard - we can stop now if you want.” Her tone was concerned, and she had a worried look on her face. Lirreah looked up at her, blinking through tears, trying to form a coherent thought. "I'm - sorry, sorry. Just. Old scars, and-" Zoyana didn't respond right away. sitting crisscross and slipping an arm underneath Lirreah. Gently, she'd prop her up in her lap, bringing her arms gently around her. Resting her chin on Lirreah's shoulder, she'd say softly. "Hey, hey, its okay." Lirreah embraced her in turn, wincing a little as the movement exacerbated the pain in her side. But she would settle, melting in Zoyana's grip. "No, not it isn't. But thats not your fault." "Your aunt, huh?" The smaller half elf said, barely above a whisper. "Yeah... Yeah." Lirreah said, her voice similarly soft. She'd turn her head gently to bury her face in Zoyana's jet-black locks, breathing in gently. She smelled of corn flower, likely from the soaps she used to wash her hair. A familiar and comforting scent that, combined with the feeling of Zoyana's arms around her, chased away the lingering panic in her chest. "Always her. I'm sorry, love." Zoey would pat her back, rubbing gently, and sigh softly. "Why are you sorry, Reah? It isn't your fault, you know." "I know. But I'm still. Like this. It has to be difficult." She'd suck in a deep breath. "What, whats difficult?" She'd ask gently. "Being with me. Loving me. Knowing me." Lirreah's voice was thick, like she was about to cry. Zoyana was quiet for a while, just rubbing her back slowly, as though she was thinking on what she wanted to say next. "Nah. All that? Thats the easy part. You wanna know whats really tough?" She'd pull away from her, to look up at her with a soft expression. Lirreah would wipe her eyes, and loft a brow. "What is?" "Not marching down to the manor and killing your aunt with my bare hands."    The only thing Lirreah could do, in that moment, was laugh. She'd pull Zoyana in for another embrace, and stay like that. "I could not agree more."

newfragile yellows [941]
"Dorian."
"Ah, ah. That's your upset voice. The one you use when you're barely hanging onto the vestiges of your patience and calm rationale by the tips of your fingers. I do so hate it when you use that tone on me. Especially when I have no idea what I could have possibly done.”
Evelyn levels a blank gaze at Dorian, who after years of enduring academia in an unbelievably cutthroat environment field by corruption and gross unethical biases, returns it with a calm, cloying smile.
Both responses can only be attributed to higher levels of scholarship and both responses are equally withering.
“Tell me you didn’t do this,” Evelyn says, tapping something on the tablet in her hands. Dorian’s own tablet chimes softly as he opens it to look at the data file she’s sent him. “I know you get bored sometimes, we all do, and want to work on other unique projects that usually have no practical use to the situation on hand. It’s a good exercise. Work on something not pertaining to your current project to keep the mind fresh. But this is inexcusable.”
As Dorian scans the file — it looks like some sort of code? Some kind of algorithm for predicting or calculating something. Not generally Dorian’s area of expertise, though he does enjoy dabbling a bit here and there. Nothing to this extent though.
“What is this inexcusable thing exactly?”
“It’s an algorithm for predicting people’s actions,” Evelyn says.
Dorian’s eyebrows raise. “And you think I did this? Why in the world would you think I would do this? Surely you can tell that something in this general realm of sciences isn’t my modus operandi, nor is it my forte. If I was going to unwind by doing something unethical I would be working on experiments with morgue bodies.”
Evelyn’s gaze doesn’t falter. “I think it’s you because the thing actually works at a reasonable success right. If there’s anyone in the world who could write a script for something as unpredictable as human nature and have it be right more often than it’s wrong, which sounds like horrible statistics but considering what it’s trying to predict here it’s more on the hose than it should be, it would be you. You are the only person on this ship I would believe capable of doing it.”
“That’s truly flattering. Your faith in my abilities to do the impossible is — I won’t say unearned. It is definitely earned. I have done the impossible for you and I will continue to do the impossible so long as my life and wellbeing is hitched to this proverbial post. And it isn’t humbling because, again, I sort of have to pull off the impossible as part of my job. But it’s definitely something. No, Evelyn. I did not write this code. Nor am I lying about it to cover my ass.” Dorian continues to scroll through the equations. “This is a work of…not art. But something. And it’s not mine. I am tempted to say that I wish I could take credit for it though. Have you tried the Iron Bull? This sounds like something he’d do in his free time.”
“Why would the Iron Bull — “
Dorian cuts Evelyn off with a slow eyebrow raise. More academia trained responses in action. Evelyn closes her eyes, tilting her head back and breathes out slowly through her nose. They’re all falling back onto the things they learned back when they were simple scholars on Earth.
Never let it be said that becoming a scholar of theories and other such supposedly inapplicable subjects will never be practical. The things you learn to manage stress and take down your supposed colleagues transfer universally.
“He would, wouldn’t he? Of course. The Iron Bull would, of course, be able to pull something like this off. He’s got just that many depths. Scholar of architecture, polygot, mathematician, master ranked chess player, extreme proficiency in most forms of combat, tactical genius — sure. Why not throw in coding as well? Why not throw in this level of coding? Maker. Of course it’s Bull. I mean. It could be Leliana, but if she were working on something like this there’s no way it’d accidentally fall into my hands. Maybe on purpose because she’d want me to know what she’s doing, but knowing her she’d already know I wouldn’t approve. God. There’s too many spies on this ship. And they’re all giving me a headache. I have to think circles around so many people who are already thinking circles around me. And that’s not even considering my actual enemies.”
“Such is the burden of leadership,” Dorian drawls. “Now, if you’re done accessing me for things I haven’t done?”
“Yes. Sorry. I kind of wish it was you.” Evelyn sighs. “Do you know where Ellana is?”
“You’re not going to talk about this with Bull?”
“I will. But first I need to know if Ellana was in on this. And between the two of them Ellana’s easier to handle because I know I’ll have her brother on my side. And if Ellana wasn’t in on this chances are she doesn’t approve so then I’ll have Ellana and Mahanon on my side against Bull. It’s a tactical thing. I’m thinking in the long term here.”
“The Inquisition will make a master tactician out of you, yet.”
“Don’t tell Leliana or Cullen that. They might start expecting me to come up with brilliant plays on my own,” Evelyn shakes her head, “You want to come with me on my Lavellan search?”
“Sounds exciting,” Dorian says. “I haven’t got anything better to do today, I suppose. Sure, why not? Am I just watching or do you expect me to be involved in some way?”
“Just back me up if things get into the weeds. You know how talking to a Lavellan can be. I know I’m making them sound like another species here, but they’ve got such an intrinsically strong ability to talk people into and out of things it’s absurd.”

Small Business Payroll Taxes: How To Calculate And Remit Them
Tumblr media
Small business owners often find payroll taxes to be a complex and challenging aspect of managing their finances. Understanding how to calculate and remit payroll taxes is essential for compliance with tax laws and avoiding penalties and fines. Here's a guide on how small businesses can calculate and remit payroll taxes effectively:
Determine Employee Tax Withholdings: The first step in calculating payroll taxes is determining the amount of taxes to withhold from employee paychecks. This includes federal income tax, state income tax (if applicable), social security tax, and Medicare tax. The IRS provides detailed instructions and withholding tables to help employers calculate the correct amount of federal income tax to withhold based on each employee's wages, filing status, and withholding allowances.
Calculate Employer Taxes: In addition to withholding taxes from employee paychecks, employers are also responsible for paying their share of payroll taxes. This includes the employer portion of social security tax, Medicare tax, and federal and state unemployment taxes. The rates for these taxes vary based on the employee's wages and the current tax rates set by the IRS and state tax agencies.
Include Additional Taxes and Deductions: Depending on the location and nature of the business, there may be additional taxes and deductions to consider. For example, some states have additional payroll taxes or local taxes that must be withheld and remitted. Additionally, businesses may offer voluntary deductions such as retirement plan contributions, health insurance premiums, or other employee benefits that need to be accounted for in payroll calculations.
Use Payroll Software or Services: Many small businesses use payroll software or services to streamline the payroll process and ensure accurate tax calculations. Payroll software automates tax withholding and calculation processes, reducing the risk of errors and saving time for business owners. Payroll services also offer compliance support and ensure that payroll taxes are remitted to the appropriate tax authorities on time.
File Tax Forms and Remit Payments: After calculating payroll taxes, small businesses must file tax forms and remit payments to the IRS and state tax agencies. The primary forms used to report payroll taxes are Form 941 (Employer's Quarterly Federal Tax Return) for federal taxes and state-specific tax forms for state taxes. These forms must be filed quarterly or annually, depending on the business's tax filing status.
Keep Accurate Records: It's essential for small businesses to maintain accurate records of payroll taxes withheld, employer taxes paid, and tax filings submitted. Keeping detailed records helps businesses track their tax liabilities, comply with tax laws, and prepare for audits or inquiries from tax authorities. Payroll software or services often include record-keeping features to help businesses manage their payroll data effectively.
Stay Updated on Tax Laws: Tax laws and regulations are subject to change, so it's crucial for small businesses to stay informed about any updates or revisions that may affect payroll taxes. This includes changes to tax rates, withholding allowances, filing deadlines, and reporting requirements. Small business owners can stay updated by consulting with tax professionals, attending tax seminars or workshops, and regularly checking for updates from the IRS and state tax agencies.
In conclusion, payroll service companies in Oklahoma City OK play a crucial role in assisting small businesses with calculating and remitting payroll taxes effectively. By leveraging advanced software, generating comprehensive reports, ensuring timely tax filings and payments, providing expert support, and offering customized solutions, payroll services help small businesses navigate the complexities of payroll taxes and ensure compliance with tax laws.
