Genshin Concert 2021 — VoicePlay performance

As video games have evolved over the decades, one of the most impactful elements has been their soundtracks. From bleeps and bloops, through simple midi tracks, to full orchestral compositions, the sounds that accompany players on their pixel-based adventures can help set the mood and create lasting memories. When the team behind Genshin Impact wanted to celebrate its first anniversary, they turned to artists from around the world to bring the game's spectacular music to life in new ways. Being both talented singers and lifelong video game players themselves, VoicePlay (and their buddy Deejay) jumped at the chance to be a part of it.

Geoff taking over the full arpeggio as the others swell into gorgeous legato harmonies

Eli's powerful timbre as they briefly dip into a minor key

the smooth transition to the projection screen and the shot widening to introduce the instrumentalists

the interplay between Layne's percussion and the drum kit

the breadth of sound at the climax of the song

easing back down to that final lingering chord

Trivia:

The first volume of the game's soundtrack was released in June 2020 under the title "The Wind and the Star Traveler".

The concert was announced during the opening night of the Gamescom convention in August.

The three-piece KoheeanBand who accompanied VoicePlay for the second half of the main theme were brought together for this concert, and also performed as part of larger ensembles on other songs during the show.

Players who logged into the game during the YouTube premiere were able to claim exclusive rewards.

As it is on the game's soundtrack and in the show, VoicePlay's rendition of the main theme is the opening track to the concert album, "Melodies of an Endless Journey", released the following January.

The VoicePlay guys really do handle almost every aspect of their productions themselves, including running the fog machine to create a moody ambiance… and cleaning up afterward.

The guys collaborated with the MiHoYo game studio again two and a half years later when they released a short of "White Night" from Honkai: Star Rail.

PattyCake also wrote an original song for Genshin Impact called "You're the One with the Problem" and released a music video for it in July 2024.

last attempt to bring this to light: the tl;dr of the khaenri'ah/kaeya/angel(seelie) connections

kaeya owns a book called adventures of angelos; in greek angelos means angel

kaeya (and venti's) favorite haunt is angel's share; the logo for angel's share is two angels drinking from a wine glass

kaeya and dainsleif like death after noon, an alcoholic drink whose main ingredient is absinthe. absinthe is created from wormwood (apsinthos), also the name of a fallen angel or star

the abyss mages chant in enochian which is the language of the angels. they chant in this language to regenerate their shields or control hilichurls. when kaeya spots the abyss mage back in the temple of the wolf, it speaks to him in enochian. kaeya claims he's "blessed with certain linguistic powers" when asked how he obtained information about the abyss twin

there is a tale of a seelie survivor (speculated to be columbina) singing in a strange unfamiliar language to the listener

arama says the seelie used to be as fast as a storm; kaeya has a stamina decreasing passive called hidden strength

when we first meet kaeya it's notably in front of the anemo god statue, which has wings, in front of the cathedral. kaeya is also seen in front of this statue in official art, his character teaser and in his hangout in the venti route

kaeya mentions he likes listening to hymns

the traveler notes the sinner is reminiscent of the upside-down defiled statue of the anemo archon, which also has wings

nabu malikata is a seelie survivor, her last name malikata can also mean angels in arabic (malayikata); seelie are heavenly envoys/angels. venti is seen playing with a seelie in an official video

seelie will seek humans for favors and lead them to treasure. even though it was a ruse, in his story quest, kaeya sought the traveler for help and guided them to treasure.

the jinn are born from waterlilies nourished by nabu malikata's blood. kaeya gifts the traveler a ~mysterious~ lamp said to have housed a powerful jinni.

the symbol for the spantamad darshan is a peacock which is based on the mythical peacock angel. this peacock existed in-game and was sacred. kaeya's constellation is a peacock. (it's possible the peacock was the divine bird simurgh -> fashioned from khvarena -> born from nabu malikata's body)

venti writes a poem to kaeya that could imply kaeya came from the dark sea. the ruins in the dark sea contain palaces of the seelie

both nabu malikata and columbina don't understand or possess human emotion. columbina is unbothered in every situation not unlike kaeya's cavalier attitude towards serious matters <- see crepus's death scene

in the official art for genshin concert 2021, venti and kaeya are shown holding a harp and a trumpet, both instruments associated with angels

Childe's lore again

I've been listening to the 2021 Genshin concert and

"Never-Ending Performance" piano version is to die for

During "Wrath of Monoceros Caeli" we get A Moon (it doesn't show up for any other song)

Childe also has moon imagery in both his TCG cards

I'm calling it, whatever Foul Legacy is (and perhaps the source of Khaenri'ah problems), it's tied to the moons being destroyed and, very likely, seelies (something something his C6 being called "Angel annihilator" in CN)

Also we are all currently focused on Khaenri'ahn sinners doing something with a descender but they weren't creating a new thing. Pierro called whatever they did "tearing away the veil of sin". They used something that was already existed and sealed away, and used the sibling as a vessel, if the new glider lore is to be believed.

I think both the whale and whatever Tartaglia casts during Foul Legacy predate the sinners, they just rediscovered it/gave it shape.

(there was also some lore in Natlan about things locked in a labyrinth but I can't remember where it was)

genshin typography stuff. really long

when genshin had birthday web events for characters apparently they'd put an announcement on miyoushe, which from what I gather is chinese hoyolab. the point is the announcement banners actually have interesting typography choices? I wouldn't say graphic design is their passion but at least they put some modicum of thought into it. also they stopped doing customized banners after 2022 for whatever godforsaken reason and im like bruh. bring it back cmon don't be lazy!

edit: oh also if something similar to this is on twitter and in english that's very cool but I actually hate navigating that site. do not appreciate finding things on a page with infinite scroll and a lot more posts

anyways, some interesting things:

2021 xingqiu and 2022 yanfei have the same font, while 2021 yanfei's is in the typeface of her (and zhongli's) burst. other announcements probably also share fonts (or use the standard hoyo serif font) but I've only noticed these two. edit: pretty sure layla/tighnari/dori all have the same one, and so do kaeya/sucrose

2021 chongyun's text is curved like the bagua symbols which is v cute. bonus points for incorporating his chonghua sword into the 2nd character

gorou's font is so interesting..... it's very calligraphy but more connected and more like actual calligraphy than the other calligraphy fonts they use.... anyways idk I just didn't expect this vibe from him so it's neat. the fish scale background is patternmaxxing so true

sayu's is cute... standard chinese cartoon font, and the paper textures are cool. reminds me a bit of that travel frog game and origami

in the same vein klee's is cute!! I really thought they'd make her font kiddy but it's not super obvious imo? maybe I'm predisposed to liking red because I feel like less is going on in this.

barbara's font being blackletter-y was kinda surprising? it fits though. i adore the clef symbol they added (the border looks like a photo frame? concert ticket? a nice touch)

adding onto 1.0 mond 4* banners, 2021 razor's goes surprisingly hard. ughhhhh the font, color choices, and the way his claymore splits the whole card in two, all of it is so pleasing to my eyes (his 2022 banner is not as good smh)

kazuha's is predictably a published book serif font but it fucks SO hard oh my god. I love this one. his 2021 announcement is also ok ig

2022 noelles is also really, really nice no notes. it's just very elegant and has good art (I miss the times when announcement portrait/drip market was a different pose than character splash art). another case where i think the 2021 post is a bit worse

2021 amber's is also pretty nice, looks deceptively simple but has enough going on to be interesting to me (just noticed the baron bunny overlay(?)). taking notes

last one is not a birthday event announcement but the font they chose is so interesting. it is nothing like the usual hoyo serif and I really like it. the gradient is also very nice

also all the text in the banners changes between each art; sometimes it's their skill/burst title, sometimes it's constellation titles, sometimes it's passives, etc. it's interesting.

after writing all this down I think I'm predisposed to liking the ones that integrate the character art into the design well, and everything else (font, background, whatnot) only matters relative to that lol. anyways mainly went through these taking notes

honorable mentions to 2022 jean, 2022 chongyun (composition points), 2022 hu tao (slightly less composition points), 2021 ganyu (because the background is from her story quest cutscene), 2021 ningguang (green backgrounds + ningguang work pretty well tbh), 2021 zhongli for the background, 2022 xingqiu (rainsword mention), 2021 bennett, diluc's just because his emo/goth font and pure black banner is kind of funny
