Ooh my latest resurgent interest.
For your first few caches, make sure to filter by difficulty/terrain. 1 or 1.5 for both is a good place to start. If you accidentally start higher than that you might have a bad time
Also good to filter for caches marked “park and grab” or “recommended for kids” as these tend to be a little easier for beginners
You probably also want to filter to just “traditional” caches - the other types are fun but I once ran into a beginner desperately looking for a container at a virtual so. Familiarize yourself with the types before going after the others, I guess.
Bring your own pen (you won’t ALWAYS need it but you usually will) a extra-fine-point sharpie is best.
Bring some stuff to swap. Small things are good because they’ll fit more places. If you don’t have anything to put in, don’t take anything out
The exception to that is trackables! You can take a trackable without swapping as long as you’re going to keep it moving.
Regarding that, read the trackable FAQ if you haven’t already so you’ll know if you find one and don’t accidentally steal one. They are not for keeping!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you’re stuck on a cache you can message the cache owner or someone who’s found it recently and ask for a hint. Most cachers are happy to answer (although it might take a while, don’t expect an instant response)
Read the info about difficulty/terrain/size. And then assume everyone is an idiot and that the terrain and difficulty will be worse and the container will be smaller.
Read the description and hint. Read old logs. Pictures on old logs especially can be super helpful sometimes.
might get into geocaching 🤔 any recommendations for someone who has never tried it before?

Morning
Mal posts the player-made zine on FreeDF. You can find it by adding the URL slug /dans-des-circonstances-eternelles to en-abime.com. She has decided to visit Tati, although it is unknown where she is right now.
Since the zine mentions a twin by name, they visit it and share a PowerPoint of all the information they had about Thomas (accessible through clicking the glitch on the page.) (It is unknown where the twin is right now.) A letter in a different font (the “T” on “The Incident”) links to w-h-a-t-h-a-p-p-e-n-e-d.
Summary: This PowerPoint includes a photo of Thomas and the details around his disappearance: He was a freshman exchange student at Princeton University in New Jersey whose parents had died 2 years before of the flu. He went missing in October of 1915 – he checked into a carrel in the library and never checked out. (The footnotes note these carrels are now in Firestone Library.) He was “kind of an introvert” but an “excellent student,” so no one noticed he was missing until months later. The Works Cited page of the PPT only lists en-abime.com as well as the page for requesting visitor access to Firestone Library. Players speculate this may be the site of a geocache.
The zine page also links to Mal’s Favorite Gigs in NYC. This page begins as a blank page and populates with pop-ups addressing the reader as you scroll down, before showing a list of Mal’s bands and performance venues – potentially another geocache lead? It also features a voice that speaks in blackout poetry, similar to the blackout poetry sections of the CYOA.
Summary: The pop-ups ask the reader to record information about themselves (to presumably join the abime) – “Log on now!” “Share abundantly your photographs, experiences, and stories with your friends.” It then presents Mal’s list of gigs as “a gift.” The list of gigs lists the band and location of each performance, as well as a short description of Mal’s experience performing with them. Mal’s handwritten note at the top reads “if you haven’t got an I.D., even a fake one, FORGET ABOUT IT, DUDETTE!” Below the gig list, the pop-ups ask the reader to “Match them with the right keys to the kingdom” for an “instantaneous cure,” “but hurry, a machine for living won’t be hanging around for long.” Below this, the blackout poetry voice begins, imploring the reader to “stop feeding us.” Their requests and cries for help are similar in tone to the ones in the CYOA.
Mal’s Favorite Gigs page leads to HELP, what looks like a customer service page with a set of Q&As and a form. The page is written by (and the Q&As are answered) by the same voices from the Mal’s Gigs page (Ad pop-ups and blackout poetry). The header at the top of the page toggles between “archive” and “appetite” on hover, and “appetite” is “all” while “ARCHIVE” is “NOTHING.” The form is “for Urgent Retrieval Concerns” and asks the reader to “DESCRIBE: WHAT YOU SEE. WHERE YOU ARE. WHERE YOU HAVE SOUGHT. WHERE YOU HAVE NOT YET SOUGHT.”
Summary: The two voices describe themselves as brothers, and have very different personalities. The popup voice describes itself as our “friend,” and encourages the questioner to find “these things” and “make them happy.” The question text eventually goes off the rails: (“Why is my skin so heavy? Why are my eyeballs so dry? Why are my bones so wet?”) to which the popup text voice answers, “You aren’t there yet, friend, but you’re doing well!” In contrast, the blackout poetry voice describes itself as our “bastard creation” and says that if we are “here” it has “failed.” It begs us to “please don’t go looking for this [...] please instead forget all about this. About them. About me.” On the left side of the page are a list of what seems to be various manifestations of HEAVEN, a series of tips that seem to be for geocaching, and there is a form at the bottom that asks for location, time, name of who they are looking for, and a description of their location.
Afternoon/Evening
Players submit form responses to HELP, most of which receive unhelpful answers via email.
Players submitting questions to the form received a response from the email [email protected] from a username THE ARCHIVE THE APPETITE. Most contained a screenshot of their question and a popup image reading “USE TOOLS FOR THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE.” Some emails contained an additional image reading “HA!HA!HA!”
At 2:41 PM EST, player sylvan receives a reply to his email “bonjour” with the additional image “I DON’T SPEAK FRENCH” and the subject line “19/20” A minute earlier at 2:40, another player Vincent received a similar email with the subject line “20/20.” Later, Vincent receives another, this time with the subject line “18/20.” Players decide not to send more emails until figuring out more about the “INTENDED PURPOSE” so the countdown stops.
At around midnight, player charles entertainment cheese sends a question: “We have looked everywhere. We are Thomas stretched across En Abime. I want to know where he entered from - Princeton? New Jersey? The Library? We have looked across as many pages as we have. We have found him in PDFs and websites where his past self is recorded and archived.” This receives a different response, without a countdown number, hinting that these questions are closer to the “INTENDED PURPOSE” and “for greater knowledge on more subjects, use your library often!”
Overall Theories
Players think these pop-ups and blackout text are two new characters, the Archive and the Appetite, which may be made up of the Abime itself. They seem more powerful than the other characters and may have placed the flyers around the different locations. They seem to want us to find whatever information they don’t yet know, and are interested in physical geocaches.
Next steps from this update:
Follow these geocache leads
Crack w-h-a-t-h-a-p-p-e-n-e-d
Figure out the purpose of the HELP form

The Call - Betrayal, Tower, Mines, oh my!
Thorn wanted to help Della, they really did. However their aim when it came to kicking could use some work. They tried to aim for Chip to kick him, but missed, their foot colliding with Della, causing both her and Chip to fall down. The snap of Della's spine as it collided with the railing was sharp and it rang through the air, followed by her screams. Chip could be seen taking her away, eager to feast on the prone prey. Thorn grimaced before stepping back into the radio tower and closing the trapdoor, latching the deadbolt shut.
*click*
"Put your hands where I can see them and explain yourself!" Thorn did so and turned. The ranger held what seemed like a flare gun at Thorn.
"My name is Thorn Thomas, and I'm a camper down the way, there's been an attack and we need to radio some help." The ranger didn't budge, not seeming to buy their story.
"not lying" came a soft voice from the shadows. Thorn turned and smiled as he recognized who stepped out of the dark of the room: Silky Cooper, the Geocacher from camp. She had visible scratches and bruises along her body, no doubt from weaving through chaos to reach safety. The ranger pocketed her flare gun before adjusting her hat.
"Name's Aspen Vadim. Your friend here spooked the shit out of me but also said the same thing you did. I didn't believe her but if you're also saying it's true, then well shoot, as a ranger I must call for help," the ranger spoke as they sat down at their seat and turned on the short-hand radio. "This is Ranger Vadim, requesting aid to the River Stigz campsite, there's been an animal attack, people are in critical danger and we need help!"
The radio lit up, showing that the call had been received. "This is Ranger Johnson, copy t--" The radio spoke before it went static. Ranger Vadim was about to complain when a loud screech of metal could be heard. Then the radio satellite came careening through the window. As Aspen stood back up a werewolf landed on the tower's balcony, leering inside. The werewolf had a streak of silver in its fur.
"Sable?" Both Thorn and Silky asked, both recognizing the archaeologist's hair streak present in the beast in front of them. Ranger Vadim wasted no time in gawking to pull out her flare gun and fire directly in the lycan's face. A growl was heard as well as scampering of claws as the flare landed on the balcony.
A few moments passed as the three caught their breaths. Then Silky began to look nervous.
"Danger. Below!" She whispered urgently. Her warning came too late, as the loud sound of a cut loose cable could be heard.
"Shit. They're cutting through the support cables!" Aspen shouted as a second and third cable went. The wind pushing the loosened radio tower as the floor went from flat to slanted. Thorn grabbed the trapdoor handle with one hand and Silky with the other as the tower quickly went horizontal as everything began to slide, some of the sudden removal of electrical appliances sparking some flames inside.
With a scream Aspen slipped and fell onto the glass window, nearby where the satellite went through. The glass splintered from the force. A printer came loose from it's cord and went through the glass on the other side of Aspen; without support on either side, the glass they were on gave way, and they hit the railing, gripping it for dear life.
"I can't hold on!" Aspen shouted as they lost grip in one hand. The radio came loose and collided with their other hand. They fell with a yell as they met a loud and wet impact on a rock below, the blood splatter barely visible from the height of the survivors.
"Push!" Silky warned as Thorn could see shapes bound out of sight on the ground. Thorn realized what they were doing as their angles shifted further: The werewolves were pushing on the tower! The tower groaned as it tipped further and further until the metal support at the bottom finally snapped loudly and the tower went zooming into the ground, where it began to slowly but surely shift lower and lower..
The cheers of the werewolves were swiftly drowned out by them howling into the night.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After a few hours Thorn came to. They tried to move and groaned in pain. They touched their forehead. Slight bleeding. They turned to see the tower, on fire, hanging upside down. As they stood up the tower fell all the way down with a loud crash. Thorn looked around to see where they were. They saw rocks, lanterns, torches, and track.
"Did we fall into a mine?" Thorn asked themself before looking around for Silky, and finding no one. They still had their backpack on them... did Silky carry them to safety with all that weight?
Thorn's radio lit up again. "--. --- / .-.. . ..-. -" It said before turning off. Thorn sighed and grabbed a torch off the wall before continuing down the mines, seeing no alternate path.
Soon Thorn came across two paths. The left had claw scratches around the entrance, but the right had voices that could be heard faintly. Thorn reckoned they only had enough torchlight for a trip through one.
Outdoor Adventures: Encouraging Nature Exploration with Kids
Introduction:
In the fast-paced digital age, fostering a connection with nature is a gift parents can give their children. Outdoor adventures not only provide opportunities for physical activity but also cultivate a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world. In this exploration, we delve into the importance of encouraging nature exploration with kids and share practical tips for creating memorable outdoor adventures.
The Importance of Nature Exploration:
Physical Health:
Outdoor adventures promote physical well-being by encouraging kids to engage in activities like hiking, biking, or playing sports. These activities contribute to the development of motor skills, strength, and overall fitness.
Emotional Well-Being:
Nature exploration has a positive impact on emotional well-being. Spending time outdoors allows children to experience a sense of freedom, reduce stress levels, and develop resilience as they navigate the challenges of the natural environment.
Curiosity and Learning:
Nature serves as an endless classroom, sparking curiosity and fostering a love for learning. Whether observing wildlife, identifying plants, or exploring different ecosystems, outdoor adventures provide hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for children.
Environmental Awareness:
Instilling a sense of environmental awareness from an early age is crucial. Outdoor adventures allow kids to witness the beauty of nature firsthand, cultivating a sense of responsibility and stewardship towards the environment.
Family Bonding:
Outdoor activities create meaningful opportunities for family bonding. Whether it's a weekend hike, a camping trip, or a simple nature walk, these shared experiences strengthen the family connection and create lasting memories.
Practical Tips for Nature Exploration with Kids:
Choose Age-Appropriate Activities:
Tailor outdoor activities to the age and interests of your children. Younger kids may enjoy simple nature walks, while older kids might be ready for more adventurous activities like geocaching or bird watching.
Create a Nature Exploration Kit:
Equip your kids with a nature exploration kit that includes items like binoculars, magnifying glasses, a field guide, and a journal. Having their own kit enhances their sense of ownership and curiosity during outdoor adventures.
Embrace Unstructured Play:
Allow for unstructured play during outdoor adventures. Let kids explore, climb, and interact with the natural environment. Unstructured play fosters creativity and a deeper connection with nature.
Set Realistic Expectations:
Understand that not every outdoor adventure needs to be grand. Even a short visit to a local park or nature reserve can provide meaningful experiences. Set realistic expectations based on the time available and the interests of your family.
Encourage Observation and Reflection:
Encourage kids to observe and reflect on what they discover during outdoor adventures. This can be done through discussions, sketches in their nature journal, or even taking photographs. This practice enhances their appreciation for the details of the natural world.
Safety First:
Prioritize safety during outdoor adventures. Dress appropriately for the weather, use sunscreen, and be aware of potential hazards. Teach kids basic outdoor safety rules and ensure they understand the importance of respecting nature.
Conclusion:
Encouraging nature exploration with kids is a gift that extends beyond the immediate moment—it lays the foundation for a lifelong connection with the environment. By emphasizing the importance of physical health, emotional well-being, curiosity, learning, environmental awareness, and family bonding, parents can foster a love for nature that will enrich their children's lives for years to come.
Through practical tips like choosing age-appropriate activities, creating a nature exploration kit, embracing unstructured play, setting realistic expectations, encouraging observation and reflection, and prioritizing safety, parents can make outdoor adventures an integral and enjoyable part of their family's routine. So, lace up those hiking boots, grab a magnifying glass, and embark on a journey of discovery and wonder with your children in the great outdoors.
