Forgotten comedian Rummy Bishop was in a comedy trio with Joey Bishop in the 1940s.

They broke up in 1948.

Joey became famous as the stand-up member of the Rat Pack.

Rummy, meanwhile, spent the rest of his life playing strip clubs.

He was the house emcee at a Toronto strip club for the duration of the 1970s.

An event in the presence of his wife Lonnie Ali and numerous personalities from the boxing world and friends - George Chuvalo and Earnie Shavers who faced him, Evander Holyfield, Roberto Durán and Julio César Chávez who drew inspiration, and many others. An evening full of emotions, animated by boxer and commentator Paul "Paulie" Malignaggi in the legendary boxing gym Gleason's Gym, under the Brooklyn Bridge, which saw Muhammad Ali training and over 130 other world boxing champions and with the testimony by Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of TAG Heuer, who met him four years ago in December 2012. O Mary, you were a woman

& I picture you with bees— probably because there is a book called The Secret Life of Bees where you appear as ‘Our Lady of Chains’ & I haven’t read it, but I heard it was good. & Mary, you are anything— maiden/mother/crone, you are the triple goddess if you want, but of course you never asked for this May crown. & Mary, did you know the queen bee picks the sex of all her offspring? the worker male’s a clone, an egg she fertilized herself. What I mean is that it matters less to me you were the perfect woman than that you were by far the most important of the passion story. & Mary, I remember George Chuvalo at my high school, & weep for his three sons, all lost to drugs— how Marylike he was, & when I hugged him how redeemed I felt; how fragile in the arms of that survivor. O Mary, I am sorry for your loss, but this is not a vessel poem; you are not a queen of hives. & when I think of you, I think of other crosses, think about the mother of the thief. I think of George Chuvalo’s first wife, who couldn’t bear the grief. But Mary, somewhere someone else’s child is beating heroin, all thanks to you. & that’s got to be worth something. * * * Written April 2021.

Tribute to Chuvalo

This tribute to George Chuvalo was painted by an admirer near Bathurst and Harboard in Toronto.  Unknown outside Canada, he was five time Canadian Heavyweight Champion.  Unfortunately, boxing took a toll on him and he developed dementia in middle age.
