Bill and you probably met at school and became one another’s safe person to be honest.

It was comforting to you to have someone that not only understood and loved your style, but shared it in some ways.

Also someone that knew how getting insulted, pushed around and harassed at a place that’s supposed to be safe felt like.

He always understood the need to express your true self and emotions through clothes, music, et cetera. You bet that his eyes were hooked on you from the moment he saw you.

Chunky and studded belts, gravity defying or sleek hair, or some amazing curls that reminded him of Nena. No matter how your physical appearance might be, it was the way that you portrayed and carried yourself that drove Bill to you.

He was probably so shy when approaching you !!

Sadly, you can’t always see the world through rose tinted glasses. The situation at school and around town didn’t get much better after befriending Bill..

Two is better than one; you guys were easy targets for people’s cruelty.

It was the late 90s & early 2000s, acceptance was lacking much more than it is today.

Tom was you guys’s main defender.

He might’ve been embarrassed of his brother’s style from time to time back in the day (Bill talked about this in his book) but he would never turn his back on him.

One time the twins found you all roughed up after some kids thought it was funny to charge at you as a group. They took you to their home, cleaned you up and their mom cooked you guys dinner.

You watched some movies on VHS and music videos on VIVA.

Not going to lie, you probably trauma bonded with Bill a lot. It might’ve been harmful in it’s ways but it genuinely helped you guys get some relief.

Whenever someone would make a comment out of place or physically harm you, Tom would go feral. You actually had to hold him back from getting dangerously physical a couple times.

Exciting the school grounds, running for your life along with the twins was no rare occurrence.

Bill was not scared to fight back either (verbally) but it took much more to get it out of him. He genuinely just wished to forget about them and go back to his safe bubble with you, his twin and the band.

Speaking of the band, Bill must definitely took you in rapidly as your style matched “Devilish” so well.

It was a tough road to stardom but you guys rose to fame practically overnight when your first single as “Tokio Hotel” dropped. (Shamelessly promoting my Growing up with Tokio Hotel series)

At first there wasn’t much change when it came to bullying. Outside of school you were the newest star in Germany. A young icon for teenagers that needed someone to look up to. Back at school, you were still a looser for many.

At least they learned to shut their mouths a minute. They just looked.

But their looks changed. It wasn’t pure mockery anymore. Their stares were full of jealousy because they knew they could never achieve what you did, and no matter how hard they tried they couldn’t take that away from you.

It generated even more hatred, as if “why does the social reject become a star when I’m the popular and normal one”

Shortly after, you needed to show up to class with a bodyguard.

It was ironic how the reject everyone hated suddenly became the centre of attention. For the best and worst. Some adored you and wanted your autograph and photo, cornering you in the halls. On the other side, some were there to harm you because they wanted your downfall.

To go in and out of school along with the twins, you needed high security. Which inevitably set you even more aside from the others.

Thank god you got permission to get out of that hell hole called highschool.

Time passed fast and Tokio Hotel rose to fame like a rocket ship exiting the atmosphere. Quickly, explosively and destructively. You were on top of the world.

Tour after tour, receiving award after award.

There were rough times and mistreatment by the label but, it couldn’t compare to everything you went through prior. Tokio Hotel and the stage were your escape and safe place.

Bill was with you at every step. Writing songs, working on new riffs, comforting you when it got hard. You never quit each other’s side through the years.

You can’t begin to describe the satisfaction of looking down to one of your school bullies in the front row as you were on stage, rocking out with Bill.

Approaching him, flawlessly playing your instrument as he sung. Face to face, happily and freely.

The look on your bully’s face was priceless, pure jealousy and hatred, yet they couldn’t resist the song.

Call it petty, but it felt damn good to shove in their face that you’re thriving while they’re forced to look up at the people they stepped and spit on.

You would never forget their faces, but they would stay in your past. What matters is how you managed to get out of there

If you ever have a bad time remembering those times, Bill will be there for you. His idea of friendly therapy to get over it might not be the most practical; as it is getting wasted and party it out- but gosh does it cheer you up. No matter how much time passes, Bill’s antics will be there to help you.

You always admired how he stayed bright and even when the world crumbled around him.

A good decade later you found yourself getting recognized at a coffee shop in Berlin as you were out of rehearsals for your next tour. It was a little girl with coloured hair and glasses. She told you how she found the band through TikTok and your songs helped her through hard times. Just to look up and see that her parent is the same bitch that made your life miserable so many years ago.

You simply smirked, signing an autograph for the girl and allowing her to take a photo with you.

You could’ve shoved this in your bully’s face, but there’s nothing that will bother them more than showing them how happy, and better you are.

Like are they the kind of couple to go on like extravegant ass dates to like fancy restraunts and stuff or do they just like sit around in their house and like watch random movies

BOTH! I think because of germanys inexperience in his brain a date is only a date if its like "Take to dinner. Watch Movie. Wear something nice. Escort Home and if youre a slut get a kiss on the cheek." yknow the textbook definition, and because of that maybe once a month or something he will plan a date like that and be like Italy. Lets Go..... on a Date. and ofc italy is like hell yes bro me when i dont have to plan and hell pay for my meal n ticket 😍😍 I think even sometimes he borrows Japans shoujo manga (since he canonically in draws in a manga-like artstyle.. thats crazy) and studies it with sticky notes and shit to get ideas for new dates. so i think if you asked them theyd say thats what their dates are, but really theyre having casual dates like every fuckin day. What do you thing a romcom between Sara and August would look like ? What trope do you think fit them the most ?

So. Startling confessions ahead…

I’m not sure if I’m an expert in romcoms and romcom tropes? Like, genuinely not sure. I’m more of a romantic drama (RomDram?) person than a romantic comedy person, in terms of what I purposely seek out, but I do read/watch a lot of things that are romcom adjacent and I have some romcoms I like quite a bit. Plus I read a lot more romance novels now than I ever did ten years ago.

That said, I’m going to try to answer your question. And I will mention some love stories I like along the way!

I actually have two scenarios for you. The first is more a sargust scenario that I could see happening after the future of canon. The second is a canon divergent sargust scenario that could happen in an alternate universe. And then I might mention a bonus scenario or two, just for funsies.

Scenario A: Canon Compliant-ish Future Sargust

My vote for sargust-in-the-future is a second chance romance road trip romcom. Now that Sara can drive, why not use that as part of the story?

My thought here is that Sara and August have to drive across Europe together for whatever reason. Maybe one of the Icelandic volcanoes has a big eruption, and the ash in the air is disrupting flights all over European airspace, and August and Sara both happen to be… somewhere. Let’s say the south of France. They’re not there together, but they both happen to be there when the volcano erupts. And maybe trains are a difficult option because of rail strikes or they’re overbooked. Sara and August have to drive from France to Germany to Denmark to Sweden so they can get to Simon and Wilhelm’s wedding on time.

The nice thing about a road trip romance is that the characters on the trip have a lot of time together to talk through things and get to know one another. (Or in Sara and August’s case, get to know the adults that they’ve both become, and how they’ve matured and how they’ve stayed the same.) Trips also bring unexpected challenges, so that could give them a chance to work together on tasks and bond over their successes. Especially if August has just left the monarchy and there’s public buzz about that, they might have to ditch paparazzi. And maybe at some point their car breaks down and they have to ride horses for the last part of the journey? There will absolutely be horses.

Given that road trips involve stops for the night, you could theoretically also bring in Only One Bed as a trope. I’m not as much of a fan of that trope myself (I love it when characters choose Only One Bed instead of having it thrust upon them) but someone who’s interested in it could write it.

In terms of mood and structure, I’d actually love to see this story be similar to Jab We Met, one of my favorite Bollywood films. One of the things I like about Jab We Met is that it starts its characters as archetypes but deepens them gradually over the course of the film, and it also balances out how much they’re able to help one another grow. Geet and Aditya are very different from Sara and August, so some of the dynamic would be different, but I still like the idea of them traveling together. (Although, part of Aditiya’s plot is about him reconciling with his mother, which is also something I want for August, so there’s that.)

Scenario B: Canon Divergent Alternate Universe (and it’s softer, and a little silly!)

What’s the trope where you’re helping someone win over a potential partner? That’s like a variation on the Cyrano story, right? I’ve never really read the original Cyrano, but I did read She Gets The Girl by Rachel Lippincott and Alyson Derrick, and that was cute, so.

Anyway. For some reason Scenario B takes place in an alternate universe where Sara goes to Hillerska but Simon chose not to join her and is at Marieberg. Sara wants to make friends and fit in and live in the dorms, so she’s looking for opportunities to do that. (This ends up being a much softer universe than actual YR, but romcoms are supposed to be softer, right?)

Yeah, anyway. Status quo at the beginning of the movie/miniseries: Sara wants to fit in and live in the dorms. August wants to date Felice. Felice wants to not have to deal with her temperamental horse Rousseau, and instead secretly practice her cooking and baking skills without anyone at school (or her parents) finding out.

Felice finds out that Sara is a non-res, and talks Sara into inviting her over to use her household kitchen. In return, Felice will let Sara into her friend group. But over time they become real friends. (Maybe Wille becomes Felice’s sous-chef eventually, and that’s how Wille and Simon become the beta pairing in this story.)

Meanwhile… Sara learns that August can talk the board into letting her into the dorms, somehow. And everyone knows he wants to date Felice. And Felice is like “ugh, my horse is so temperamental, I’d totally adore someone if they’d just deal with my horse for me.” So Sara goes to August and is like I WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO TAME ROUSSEAU SO YOU CAN WIN OVER FELICE AND IN RETURN YOU MUST GET ME A DORM ROOM. And August is like, OKAY GIRL-SOCIALIST YOU HAVE A DEAL, because like I said, this is a far softer universe than canon and no one films anyone at any windows!

So anyway, Sara and August start sneaking into the stable so Sara can teach August how to tame Rousseau. And August is the jerk rich boy of course, but soon softens up because he’s learning to take care of a horse, and he and Sara are opening up about their family situations and such, and oh no! They are catching feelings! But neither of them thinks the other one likes them back! Even if at one point Sara misses the last bus home from Hillerska and August is like don’t worry I’ll escort you and they ride horses back to Sara’s house. (And Linda is very much like. What. Is happening.) And Sara’s like SIGH WELL I BETTER HELP AUGUST WIN OVER FELICE WITH THESE HORSE SKILLS HE’S ACQUIRING. THE VALENTINE’S BALL IS APPROACHING AND HE’LL WANT TO GO WITH HER.

There are, of course, Misunderstandings, because this is a romcom and that is how they work, but by the end all is resolved and Sara and August go to the dance together in their 18th century costumes. Wille and Simon are also together and Felice ends up with either Rosh or Ayub. I haven’t decided.

Bonus Scenario C: I’m not even sure how this one works

I have no energy left for scenarios but I bet sargust could pull off a reasonably excellent Academic Rivals To Lovers story. And someone should write that while also drawing inspiration from Rachel Lynn Solomon’s Today Tonight Tomorrow because it is absolutely one of my favorite books to ever exist.

Honestly, even if all people get from this post is that they should watch Jab We Met and read Today Tonight Tomorrow, I’ll be a happy dalahorse.

Haddaway - "Who Do You Love" 1998 Eurodance / Eurohouse

A real shame that the world had decided that they'd pretty much had their fill of Trinidadian-German singer Haddaway by the mid-90s, because with this single of his from '98, he'd prove that he still definitely had the ability to pump out a good dance banger. Unfortunately, though, it seems that almost nobody really cared to notice anymore, with this smooth and catchy vocal house track that featured his signature tender, yet spirited vocal only managing to peak at #93 in Germany 😕.

And even though the fun and romantic road trip video for it had been shot in a small desert town in Arizona, the places where he'd actually end up releasing this single appear to only be in Europe and Mexico. But had American club DJs been given access to this one at the time, I really don't see how they wouldn't have laced their own sets with it. "Who Do You Love" is pretty quality Eurodance material with a slightly dark vibe, and its initial beat-drop at around the 30-second mark is really satisfying 😌.

So, Haddaway really had a whole lot more to give than just "What Is Love" after the early 90s, and while the US ended up missing the boat on just about all of it entirely, it seems that Europe turned away from it too soon as well.

Fantasy throughout the world

On top of having an article centered around the French fantasy specifically, the "Modern Success" issue of the BNF Fantasy series also has an article (again written by Anne Besson) covering the topic of "Fantasy throughout the world". Here is, once again, a rough translation by your humble servant:

While heavily dominated by an English-speaking production, fantasy literature found its place in numerous European countries, and managed to cross several continents.

Born in England, grown in parallel on the two sides of the Atlantic oceans, and becoming a mass-phenomenon in the United-States, fantasy is without a doubt an anglophone genre. Even today the fantasy market has a MASSIVE unbalance, and the modern fantasy successes prove that the mondialization of the imaginations is dominated by the cultural superpower of the USA. But ever since the 1970s, as the translations of Tolkien spread across the world and role-playing games conquered the heart of teenagers, "native fantasies" started to appear in various European languages.

German fantasy is a good example of one of those "local takes" - it does help that Germany has a literary background including the Romantic movement, and the brothers Grimm fairytales. After the enormous success of Michael Ende's Never-Ending Story in 1979, the German fantasy did not stop. Many successful authors appeared. Wolfgang Hohlbein gained an internal fame, with his 1982 Märchenmond or his 1999's Chronicles of the Immortals. Cornelia Funke was a famous German youth author, with her trilogy "Inkworld" in 2003. Kai Meyer reworked Germanic legends in his 1998's Loreley or his 2001's Nibelungengold. Walter Moers created the continent of Zamonia, and popularized the character of Captain Blue-Bear (hero of a 1993's children television show, of two novels, and of a 1999's movie).

But very often, international fame only latches on one specific author that is well-known outside of their country's frontiers. In Poland, this author would be Andrzej Sapkowski with his 1986's Witcher series, adapted in 2007 as a video game, and in 2019 as a television series). In Spain, it would be Javier Negrete with his 2003's Tramorea.

Crossing the continents, it becomes very tempting to mix together the magic of fantasy literature with specifically cultural supernatural domains - the Hindu pantheon, the Chinese ghost stories, the kami and the yokai of Japan, the witchcraft of Africa or the Caribbean Isles...

South-America is rich of a literary tradition that in France we compare to our own "fantastique": the short stories of Argentina's authors Jose Luis Borges or Adolfo Bioy Casares in the 40s, the magical realism of Alejo Carpentier in Cuba (The Century of Lights, 1962), of Gabriel Garcia Marquez in Columbia (A Hundred Years of Solitude, 1967) or Carlos Fuenta in Mexico (Terra Nostra, 1975).

On the side of the African continent, The Road of Hunger, in 1991, by Nigerian author Ben Okri, is also part of this more "legitimate" current, a form of fantasy much closer to "general literature", but there is a new African generation, dominated by English-speaking women (Nnedi Okorakor, Nisi Shaw, Lauren Beukes) that fully appropriate and absorb the fantasy genre.

Up until a very recent date, it was considered more respectful to not assimilate these works, born of very different cultures, with a genre that is both modern and Anglo-Saxon. However, the numeric world and the mondialized economy have today destroyed a lot of cultural frontiers, and today we assist to a true "meeting of the imaginations" mixing various cultures together. The author of this article mentions as an example several works coming from East-Asia: the Japanese manga Full Metal Alchemist by Arakawa Hirowu, the other Japanese manga Witch Hat Atelier, or the Sino-American movie The Great Wall (2016).

Hmmm, honestly Germany or Victoria, British Columbia sounds like a nice reset month for me?

To the Germany option, I feel as though I wouldn't mind walking around a bunch of Germans who'll be over a feet taller than me hahaha and I'll just work an honest job, rent a nice unit, and walk around and visit places so I can appreciate living there.

Victoria, British Columbia? It looks like a pretty place to live in AND I'll be able to do a week and half road trip to Washington and hike Olympic National Park 😂😂😂😝
