La sfida dei rivestimenti smoggofagi
Ad ogni modo la fantastica storia dei rivestimenti capaci di abbattere l'inquinamento non finisce qui perché nel tempo la competizione ha fatto sì che altri operatori del mercato si interessassero alla cosa e così a partire da una riflessione abbastanza barbina si è arrivati ad una seconda possibile applicazione del concetto di copertura-mangia-smog: cos'è quella cosa che ti porta ovunque senza spostarsi mai? Qual'è quella cosa che quando piove si copre di macchie di tutti i colori che ricordano vagamente l'arcobaleno? Va be' dai tagliamo corto: è la strada. Migliaia di mezzi vi transitano e ad eccezione di quelli di grosse di dimensioni ognuno ha lo scarico orientato a terra così che i fumi non vengano espulsi ad altezza d'uomo. Risultato: il manto stradale è costantemente ricoperto di schifezze che la pioggia, quando cade, lava via, convogliandole nei nostri sistemi fognari o facendole infiltrare nel terreno. Niente di cui essere veramente felici, direi. Ecco l'applicazione dei rivestimenti qui considerati, tutti a base di biossido di titanio, arriva ad interessare proprio la strada. Il materiale in discorso non sembra essere tossico tanto che sono in fase di sperimentazione fibre autopulenti rivestite di biossido di titanio e viene normalmente impiegato come colorante alimentare (il suo alto indice di rifrazione gli vale un impiego anche nella realizzazione di vernici) ma c'è anche da dire che qualcuno ha messo in dubbio il fatto che sia totalmente innocuo.
In attesa che il buon Gesù, in occasione della seconda venuta, ci metta il cuore in pace dicendoci quale sia la veraverità guardiamo ai fatti: ad Eindhoven hanno ricoperto il manto stradale di una zona della città con detta anidride titanica (che è lo stesso biossido di titanio ma con un nome più figo) e a seguito dei più tradizionali monitoraggi hanno rilevato che nelle miglior condizioni meteorologiche auspicabili (il processo di fotocatalisi è più efficiente in condizione di irraggiamento elevato e bassa umidità) l'efficienza del rivestimento raggiunge il 45% di abbattimento degli inquinanti presi in considerazione, attestandosi su valore medio del 19%, questi i dati pubblicati sul Journal of Hazardous Materials. L'altra faccia della medaglia presenta però inconvenienti a cui siamo abituati: è una novità e quindi è un sistema costoso. Il che è un deterrente incredibilmente efficacie specie per i nostri amministratori.
Restano comunque risorse preziose che con i dovuti investimenti potranno offrire un contributo importante nella gestione del problema inquinamento, tuttavia c'è da tenere bene a mente che nel diritto dell'ambiente è universalmente accolto il principio di risoluzione del problema alla fonte; ciò implica che dovremmo prevenire l'immissione in ambiente di agenti inquinanti piuttosto che guardare ESCLUSIVAMENTE a come eliminarli (meno trasporto privato e più trasporto pubblico ad esempio) altrimenti a fronte di un efficacie sistema di contenimento delle emissioni ci sarà sempre qualcuno che penserà "io la macchina la posso usare, tanto lo smog se lo mangia la vernice".
