Midwinter in Waterdeep: Part One
Gale/Tav | Angst & Pining | Read Part Two | Read Part Three | Read on AO3
Tumblr media
Summary:
After the Netherbrain defeat, she thought her life with Gale was all wrapped up in a neat package with a beautiful bow. Life in the tower with its schedules, routine, and walls ended up not being for her. Over a year later, she finds herself on a job in the city again near the Midwinter Festival, searching faces in the crowd.
She found herself searching faces she passed on the street. None of them were him, of course, but did she want them to be? Had his schedule changed in these many months? She purchased a sweet roll at a food cart, her favorite one he had taken her to almost every tenday. Some things don’t change. She thought once that she could, that she could adapt to living in the city for him, for love, thinking adaptability was her strong point. She was mistaken.
AN: A quick one shot inspired by a song. I don't know if this is a sad AU standalone or if it will work its way into my main fic. I've had this idea rattling in my head for about a week. Nothing but angst and some pining. EDIT: This is now the first part in a three part story
She didn't know why she took a job in Waterdeep of all places. It was the one city she wanted to forget about in the entirety of the Sword Coast. Her memories of the place ran the gamut, from the highest, happiest bliss to the lowest, most soul-wrenching sadness.
“Will you join me in Waterdeep as the newest member of the Dekarios clan?” He asked in the Elfsong Tavern, on one knee, more nervous than he needed to be.
“This is my tower, welcome to your new home, future Mrs. Dekarios,” he said with a smile, crossing the threshold.
“Is everything okay? You feel distant ever since Withers’s party, my love.” He had a sad look on his face, knowing the inevitable was coming.
“Let’s cancel the wedding.” He entered his study, barely acknowledging her.
She had left not long after that while he was teaching at Blackstaff Academy, a note on the entryway table for when he returned. The silver ring he had purchased for her upon their arrival in the city acting as a paperweight.
I’m sorry. I can’t do this.
That was over a year ago. Now, she found herself back in the city after signing a contract for what turned out to be a relatively easy job for some quick gold. Desperate times, desperate measures. Turns out being the “Hero of Baldur’s Gate” didn’t go far outside of Baldur’s Gate. Her contract paid for one more night of lodging, so she went on a stroll from her inn down the main street toward the docks.
Dangerous. Tempting. Stupid.
She found herself searching faces she passed on the street. None of them were him, of course, but did she want them to be? Had his schedule changed in these many months? She purchased a sweet roll at a food cart, her favorite one he had taken her to almost every tenday. Some things don’t change. She thought once that she could, that she could learn to love living in the city for him, for love, thinking adaptability was her strong point. She was mistaken.
She pulled her thin wool coat tighter around her as she kept walking toward the waterfront. Waterdeep was cold this close to Midwinter. Snow was starting to flurry, people were hurrying around with packages. She turned the corner onto a street lined with large houses, his tower near the very end.
Dangerous. Tempting. Stupid.
She looked in windows as she walked by, illuminated with the golden light of candles as families and friends got together for celebrations. If she had never left, would she be at one of these parties, laughing as Gale’s arm draped over her shoulders? Would he be regaling everyone with tales of their grand adventure, or of something an apprentice had done at Blackstaff Academy? Would he finish the story by kissing her hand or cheek, as he loved to do in public?
Had he found someone else? Moved on? A new future Mrs. Dekarios in the tower, one who is best friends with Tara and Morena, slotting into their life with ease and grace, much better than she ever had a hope to? Is he better off not knowing her anymore?
She didn’t let her thoughts wander to him often, if at all. Tears threatened to form in her eyes - from the memories or the wind she could not say for sure, but she’d blame the wind anyway. The sun was starting to go down, and her inn was in the center of the city. She could handle herself when it came to physical threats, but the cold was getting more and more biting without the sun to lessen its sting. Just a couple more, then I’ll turn around, she thought. The houses down here were so pretty with their decorations. She smiled to herself halfheartedly. This could have been her life.
She could hear the celebrations from the house two doors down. That would be the one she turned around at, she decided, wanting to attend their celebration from the outside, if only for a moment. She looked in the window from across the street. The front room was indeed full of people, each with drink in hand, laughing and cheering for someone. She laughed to herself as she saw the illusion of fireworks inside the room, setting the room alight with sparkling magic fit for a midwinter celebration. She missed magic. She saw the crowd part, presumably for the subject of the cheers.
Her eyes widened. Her breathing quickened.
His hair was longer, a little more grey at the temples. He still tied it up halfway. He still had his beard. The creases by his eyes were a little deeper.
He was looking right at her, frozen, his brown eyes just as wide as hers.
She turned quickly to make a hasty escape. She knew it was tempting the gods to come down this street, but hadn’t that been the point? Hadn’t she become addicted to the if only during her time in the city?
“Stop!” she heard his voice behind her. She got three houses down before she felt a hand grab hers, stopping her in her tracks. “Wait. Please,” he said, panting.
Dangerous. Tempting. Stupid.
She turned around.

So ive been playing skyrim since it came out all the way back in 2011
Obviously, i was a bit younger 13 years ago. And a lot more naive. Didn't know a ton about how the world worked. I didn't even know that I wanted to go into federal work and I barely paid attention in social studies.
Since Skyrim's release day, I moved to 4 different places, most of those cities I also moved to different homes within. I graduated high school, took a few years to gain work and life experience, performed in multiple professional musicals, moved out on my own on the other side of the atlantic where I was the only one I knew on that entire coast, went to uni, started HRT, got involved in street-level activism, graduated uni with a double degree in political science and cinema (and a minor in history!), dealt with my childhood dog dying, nearly died myself of covid, moved again, got a shitty door to door salesman job, quit, got a shitty retail job, quit, got a job in federal security until I can climb the ladder higher, worked a provincial election for the NDP, and met my boyfriend. This is by no means an exhaustive list.
To say that a lot happens in 13 years is a bit of an understatement.
The first time I ever played Skyrim, I joined the stormcloaks. I was a naive kid who didn't know much about politics or the world. I didn't really know much about how all that jargon worked and only saw them as a rebellion against some kind of tyrant. Worked for me.
My recent run I picked up after all these years because I remembered how many hours and years I spent in elder scrolls games. It seemed that no matter how far away I moved or how different everything seemed, I always had either Oblivion or Skyrim to pick up and escape into. I feel a little lost and disoriented in my life now, and needed something familiar and comforting, so I booted it up again.
I got to the quest where you negotiate a ceasefire between the imperials and stormcloaks until the dragons return is dealt with. "Lets make sure we actually have a skyrim left to fight over, yeah?"
The first time I played, I gave the stormcloaks everything. Why wouldnt I? I joined them, after all.
This time was a little... different. I joined the Imperials, and was willing to seceed more territory to the side I wasn't on. Now I have a formal education in politics, and direct experience within it.
If you want Markarth, we need Riften. Winterhold's strategic position isn't a fair enough trade for Markarth's size and direct access to Skyrim's silver mines. No, we aren't sending the Thalmor ambassador away.
The White-Gold Concordant is too fragile and the Dominion's armies too strong to risk alienating them any further and playing with fire for another Great War. I don't like the Thalmor either, but we need to keep them docile enough to build the Empire's armies again to kick them back out, and for that we need time, so she stays.
You ask why the dragonborn has imperial sympathies? It's not sympathy for an imperialist power, it's recongition that this is the only legitimate possibility for a chance at peace again after all tge secessions and the incident at the Imperial City 30 years ago.
Sometimes you just gotta do dirty work to keep the wheels greased and the cart moving. I understand where you're coming from with a lot of things, Ulfric, but your blind fanaticism has both served the Thalmor's interests by diverting the precious resources of the army that can stand up to them fighting your stupid proxy war, and you have turned into a bigot chasing this traditionalist nord supremacy. You are part of the world, you're going to have to play ball with it. You can't have your secret third option and expect to have a Skyrim to come back to in 10 years.
"Even the dragonborn betrays Skyrim." Yeah, that's how a politician throws a tantrum when they don't get their way. But I won't speak up about the hypocrisy of implying that Skyrim's prophecized jesus-figure hero is somehow a traitor to it just because I didn't hand the victory to you on a silver platter. We got a ceasefire and didn't alienate the Thalmor while we need to buy time to regroup. That's the important part.
I don't know, man. When I was a kid I didn't think any of that through. And this time it came so naturally that it was like breathing for me.
It's a bit of a silly thing to draw comparisons through but I think it says something

“A prayer of thanks for the Vanir
Hail to Njord!
Hail to that gift-giving god
Whose generosity is as boundless as the sea.
God of the coasts and the ocean
A hand to calm the troubled waters.
A peacemaker, an oathkeeper
Hail to Njord!
Hail to Nerthus!
Hail to that hidden goddess
Whose cart and whose cattle
blesses the fields
and helps us all prosper.
Hail the Earth Mother
Hail to Nerthus!
Hail to Freya, lady of love and light
And magic, gold, lust, and death
Hail to Her glowing hall
that welcomes half of the slain—
a well-deserved reward for a life well wrought.
Hail to the Vanadis!
Hail to Freyr, lord of peace and prosperity
Who thaws the land, makes it fertile and lush
Hail to the god who followed his heart
He gave up his weapon and chose love, not war.
Hail to the noble sacrificial king.
Hail to Ingvi-Freyr!
Hail to these gods of pleasure and plenty
Of peace, prosperity, and wisdom!
Hail to all their spouses and children!
Hail to their laughter, hail to their strength
Hail to the joy and hope that they bring us!
Hail to the connections they nurture between us!
Hail to the generous Vanir!”

Seaside Hotel
Mum is in need of a beach vacation, and the family travel to this hotel.
Tumblr media
It looks like the hotel is situated in a less built-up area than the part of the Gold Coast where Nana lives (note all that greenery) but the area still supports multi-storey hotels.
The hotel’s parking entrance has that annoying setup where you can’t quite reach the card scanner / gateway access control unless you pull up really close in your vehicle. With little stub arms like dog-people have, this is probably a common problem.
(In real life, this can actually be very problematic if you unbuckle your seatbelt, open the door to reach out, slip, and get run over ‘cause your foot is off the brake. Be careful out there!)
Tumblr media
The translucent garage door is a neat idea.
For the car buffs, vehicles in the parking level include an old VW Van and an old Fiat 500.
Again, an example of a parking structure with good lighting.
Tumblr media
This hotel seems to lack proper luggage carts but in place of that there are a number of shopping carts and a kind of heavy-duty cart you sometimes see at places like Hammerbarn.
Tumblr media
The room is noteworthy for a couple of reasons. It’s one of those suite-style ones that are good for families and extended stays.
The bunk beds in the kids room are nice to have. Here’s the kitchen, with a full-size fridge.
Tumblr media
In the living room, Bluey and Bingo must weigh next to nothing for a recliner chair mechanism to launch them. Fun!
Tumblr media
The hotel suite has two bathrooms (?) Here’s the first one.
Tumblr media
The second has a jetted tub in it.
I’ve been in hotel rooms with tubs like this once or twice and they usually put a nice feature like a jetted tub / Jacuzzi in the main room, but here it’s in a bathroom with a toilet next to it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh well. I shouldn’t complain, the beach access is awesome to have and that’s a great view from the balcony.
Hope Mum (and the family) managed to get some rest and relaxation and enjoy the time at the hotel. I’m sure they did.

Alright, the OC brainworms are strong today, so I'm gonna take some time and write down some thoughts I'm having for new OCs. If I don't, then I'll never do it, and they'll never see the light of day, which is too horrible a crime to imagine! 😫
Alright, first we have:
Derniergeant Noblecoeur
This character is a male Elezen Duskwight. I'm still trying to determine his name; I want it to be something that can be shortened to John.
Yes, "John." I know it's considered to be a boring name, but this name has special meaning to me, and I would be remiss to not give it to a character I play.
The idea behind John is that he is a bit of a self insert, though not quite; he's a shy sort of fellow, can be awkward to be around, and is actually very intelligent! And deep beneath the weird and knowledge, his heart is bigger than that of a dragon.
Speaking of dragons, John actually spent a good portion of his life in Ishgard. After his parents, former Duskwight bandits, died in an ill-conceived raid on a Gridanian supply caravans, he was passed around between several "caretakers." Each would pass him off quickly as his desire to be one of them was nonexistent. Eventually, the boy would stow away on a diplomatic envoy to Ishgard.
Once more, fate would conspire against him; the envoy was attacked shortly after crossing into Ishgard by none other than the Dravanian Horde. No survivors... except John.
Temple knights arrive sometime after, and take the little Duskwight back to Ishgard. There, he meets a younger Stephanivien, and discovers the wonders of Machinstry.
I have to stop there. I wanna write more, but I've got two others to introduce and this post feels long already XD
Minnow Merigyem
Minnow is a Hyuran Midlander girl. She was born to a woman by the name of Nevva; she never learned her birth father's name. During her youth, her mother became betrothed to a Roegadyn man named Wastlahz, a sailor in work for the Admiral.
Though he was more often out at sea than at home, the leave he accrued allowed him anple time to watch his little Minnow grow into a fine young woman. The two shared many a tale of ne'erdowells and scallywags, adveture and treasure, all while their mother laughed and sang along to their boisterous sea shanties well into the night. When Watslahz finally proposed, it was with his soon to be daguther's blessing.
The marriage was due to take place around her 17th summer. Unfortunately, it was that same summer Garlemald made their move on Cartenau. Their little family had been in Gridania, making the final preparations for the ceremony when word of Dalamud's descent reached them.
Wastlahz took the fastest carriage he could find and herded his family inside, riding west to try and get to the coast. They made it as far as Eastern Thanalan...
Then Bahamut emerged. Their cart was caught in the raining debris and Megaflare.
Nevva didn't make it.
When the chaos finally settled, Minnow's father by bond carried the lifeless body of her mother to Drybone. There, they mourned for a great while, both devastated by the sudden, painful loss of one they both cherished so dearly. Minnow couldn't imagine a world without her...
But the courage of a single Miqo'te woman, with tearstained cheeks and a heart of gold, pushed her forward.
😏
NEXT CHARACTER!!
Tijin Denijin
Tijin Denijin is a lalafell of a peculiar nature. Son of a wealthy Ul'dahn family, it was expected that he would fall in line and study to become the proper heir to his family's estate.
This was not at all what Tijin had in mind!
Ever since he was a whelp, Tijin was loud and slightly obnoxious, but lovable all the same. He would often do crazy and rambunctious things just to get people to laugh or react in any manner. It gave him a spark of joy, of excitement, though his parents assured him he would grow out of it.
Now, he is almost forty summers old, and he can assure everyone that he has certainly not outgrown it!
Leaving his parents at the age of twenty, he joined with a caravan of performers to make his way across the continent. He would dance, sing, and pantomime his way into the hearts of many, leaving them with a smile and a flamboyant bow.
Then the Calamity came.
His caravan was destoryed; friends he had grown close to annihilated in the blink of an eye. Everything he had once enjoyed... gone.
Save for him.
He awoke in the care of the conjurers of Gridania, having slept comatose for nearly seven moons. When he learned the fate of his Caravan, he was dumbstruck and heartbroken. All he had worked for and with, no more?
What was he to do? He had nowhere to go, no means to get home... would his family even accept him?
He broodes on this dilemma for weeks while being tended to. He nearly gave into despair when a family with a young boy was brought into their care. The child was sullen, quiet... cold. The devastation wrought upon the world had touched the poor boy with a numbing finger, consigning him to a life of apathy and nhilism...
If Tijin didn't do something.
And sure enough, he did something.
Well enough to stand, the lalafell began to jiggle and jive in a way that caught the boy's eye. Soon, a smile would spread on his face. Then his parents, the chirurgeouns... soon, everyone in triage was laughing and signing in a way that would not be heard for some long time again.
Tijin didn't know what his future held. But he would be damned if he didn't go out and bring a little light to this bleak world.
Aaaaand that marks the end of my current OC ideas. There is still SOOOO much I wanna write about them, but first, I need to get a few things squared away... namely, actually create them in game! XD
Don't worry! You'll see lots more of these guys to come, I promise
...though if someone wants to shoot me an idea or two for my Elezen's name, I'd be grateful xD

I feel like Yokai society would use gold, jewels, crystals, and precious metals stamped with their purity for currency. The higher the purity the more the item is worth because of their material and magical worth. Human currency is merely paper with proposed value, but metal and gems all have alchemy and magical properties and even backstories related to each region/culture that up’s their value.
What you're describing is a barter economy. Which are very common and are the basis of most real-world economies. The whole point of a regulated currency is to standardize that and free up resources that are needed elsewhere. So instead of having a bunch of mystical gems that people keep around for trading, people are actually incentivized to use them. Potentially their use results in more tradable goods, thus stimulating the economy more. (I am not an economist, but this is my understanding of it)
We'll go back to my love of Fallout to talk about fictional currency systems. In the Fallout games, bottlecaps are used as currency. In Fallout 3 and 4 (which take place on the east coast, while all over Fallout games take place in the west) it's not really explained why, it's kind of there because they're Fallout games and Fallout games use bottlecaps for money, but there's a lore reason for why they use bottlecaps in the original games. The games take place after a nuclear apocalypse. Most water sources are irradiated-people can drink from them, but it makes them sick and isn't good for agriculture. Clean water was a valuable commodity and became sort of a currency in its own right, and the largest source of clean water in New California (and Nevada) was the Hub.
Trouble is, water is extremely bulky and heavy. And again-nuclear wasteland. There are no vehicles, the roads are too broken up to drive cars or carts on, and they're just beginning to get rail lines running again. Most travel is done on foot. Some pack animals survived, but you run into the same problem there. They just can't carry that much water. And this is all before you get into how water can be spilled, diseased, or just dry up. Carting around water to essentially use as currency was just not feasible.
So the Hub started recognizing bottlecaps as being worth X amount of water. So if two other settlements traded or did work for each other, they didn't need to have cases of water lying around to give each other. They could just hand over bottlecaps and say "this is worth that much water, go trade it in whenever you want." Since almost everyone was getting water from the Hub, these bottlecaps became recognized as being worth real water and the currency became standard.
The Hidden City definitely would have used a barter system like you're describing at first. A lot of the people who came there were essentially tribes who operated on a barter or gift economy themselves, and those who had a standardized currency-their currency wouldn't be recognized by everyone else, and at best they might be considered more valuable than their raw materials in the new barter system but nowhere near their face value.
So where and how would they standardize their currency? That's what I'm stuck on. I don't know. The Council (or their civilian government underlings) could have came up with something, but it's rather difficult to just point to some paper and go "this is worth money now" and have people on board with that. (The New California Republic tried this in Fallout New Vegas. It wasn't going so well) There has to be some sort of backing in something that has a universally agreed upon worth. The one thing I'm thinking of for the Hidden City is space. They're in a giant cavern, they can't exactly expand. Land use was something the Council could directly control and had intrinsic worth to everyone else. They could have formalized a currency by saying "this is worth X square feet of land" and everyone recognized its worth.
But I'm just spitballing. They definitely recognize USD as well, since the boys use it to pay for stuff. I was going for metal coins because that would be the currency most Yokai would be familiar with, but crystals might be a contender too. They're easy to come by and can be grown, so it would be easy to 'mint' new currency as needed.

As per Travis Burch Gold Coast, the website style should match up with the type of business you will want to do. Some of the examples are, setting the purchase-carts, choosing the payment options and gateways, details of the data and contents, etc.
