KC Zine con was held at Goofballs Skatepark in the Waldo area of Kansas City. It was a really good show. I had a lot of interest in my work. One of the many highlights was a Kansas City Librarian taking a copy of The Field Guide to the Frogs of Jasper County for their brand new zine collection. Apparently Kansas City library patrons will be able to check out zines to take home and read which I think is pretty cool.
Going to zine/comic/small press shows is a real treat for me because it's the only way I get to see people in real life engage with my work. I had a number of people stand at my table, read comics cover to cover and laugh. It's an incredible feeling, it really makes up for the fact that most of them don't buy anything.
I gave away copies of The Dog Sandwich Portfolio for free and it was a big hit. "Free" is an incredibly popular price point and a great way to introduce new folks to my work.
I had several people ask if I sold stickers. I found this baffling at first because I'm so focused on the craft of making comics that making stickers never really occurred to me. This morning I ordered stickers of my cover version of "Au Lapin Agile" .
It's a two hour drive from Joplin to Kansas City and one of my favorite things to see are old grain silos that have trees growing in them.
Thanks again to everyone who reblogged my table assignment post for the show! I appreciate you all helping to get the word out.

It's kind of like this for me... you go in to the vet, and you see all those posters on the walls about dog dental health or heartworm meds or whatever, and you look and they're from a company trying to sell you a related med
My understanding is that usually those companies are paying the vet to post what are basically ads
And like... on one hand, those probably are effective meds for those things, and those are things that need treating. Also, if the vet is getting compensated, that may help to pay for stuff like rent and may lower my costs even a tiny bit... and that's probably good
On the other hand, I think that kind of advertising is very insidious and... you do have to ask the question, might it influence vets even unconsciously to favor giving out the meds/food/brands that also helps pay their bills, especially if they do get any kind of actual reward?
It's complicated, money makes all this stuff tricky. You get balancing operating cost, vs providing care, vs ethical questions around accepting deals with companies to directly or indirectly promote their products to people trying to take care of their pets
(And like you said, you've got a lot of this stuff around in the human medical field too)
I assume that's kind of your main point with what you've been saying here, that the whole thing is a muddy situation where monetary motives my consciously or subconsciously influence vets to lean towards brands that help them out regardless of if that's what's best for their client and their pets, but that also doesn't mean that it's some kind of pure scam with zero value either
Anyway, regardless of if I'm reading your thoughts on this right, hope you have a good day
Yes exactly. I do not believe that the average owner ‘knows more’ than a vet, however I do believe certain food brands are over-recommended due to those brands paying for their places in vet offices. This doesn’t even necessarily negate the quality of the food, or reflect on the care the veterinarian provides.
I remember getting into a long debate over the phone with a vet tech when she insinuated I had gotten grain free food for my dog as a fad diet, and they only recommended Hill’s. My dog has allergies to grain, and gets violently ill when fed regular dog food. After many brands, we have settled on a grain free, sensitive tummy dog food that keeps her healthy and happy. This does not mean she was acting with intent to harm my dog. Vets are more aware of dogs’ needs than the average person, AND you as an owner have the responsibility to know & advocate for your pet’s individualized needs.

What's your opinion on Wes Anderson's movies and how he uses orientialism?
there are people far more more knowledgeable on this topic than me (here and here are articles on this written by Asian critics) so take anything i say about it with a grain of salt! I do love Moonrise Kingdom, Fantastic Mr Fox and the Life Aquatic because they inspired me loads as a writer growing up. I think that Wes Anderson has somewhat acknowledged the influence of South Asian cinema on his work, like when he dedicated Darjeeling Limited to Bengali director Satyajit Ray, BUT it doesn't really excuse his orientalism, racism and appropriation of various Asian aesthetics in films like Isle of Dogs, grand Budapest hotel, and The Life of Henry Sugar. It's clear he views non white cultures as merely another ingredient he can add to his films to make them more quirky. I haven't seen all his films, but I was uncomfortable at the way he framed characters of colour in gbh and the french dispatch. There's rarely, if ever, any real thought to the roles he casts people of colour in and they're mostly treated as accessories to white characters. That being said, I still admire his craft and think his films are strongest when he remembers how his stylising enhances story, rather than aestheticising for its own sake. I've even written an article about how much I hate people bastardising his style on TikTok because it's such a vain treatment of his work. But ultimately I do take issue with the racism and orientalism in his filmography, and think he serves as a reminder that being influenced by filmmakers of colour isn't a get out of racism free card and I think his films are strongest when they're just about sad sily white people.

This is my old man, Bo! He's reaching the last of his days and having some problems. We don't have the money to get him everything he needs right now, and money's tight on feeding him because he has a certain diet. I'm disabled and can't work, and my caretaker already pays for everything for him and hasn't been able to buy his food. I've been able to feed him but it's not a diet I can keep him on without hurting his health
I would really appreciate if anyone could donate some money or signal boost to help me get him what he needs!
What we mostly need is to get him some doggy diapers, as he's starting to become incontinent and piddling everywhere. It's expensive to get the reusable washable ones but I'd rather get those than disposable ones. He also needs food, and with winter coming up his hips are causing him problems and I'd like to get him some joint supplements. If there's any excess money, I need to take him to a groomer to get his claws trimmed as he will NOT allow us to trim his claws at home and potentially a full grooming? I can bathe him at home but I don't have the stuff to trim out his paw pads or such
Reusable, Washable Doggy Diapers (L-XL, he's a hefty boy) seems to land about $30 on average for a pack of 3. I'd like to get two packs if I can
Grain Free Dog Food: $40
Extra: hip and joint supplements for elderly dogs, this is usually $30+ just for a month's supply
Extra Extra: Claw trim at the groomer's is $20, while a full visit is $60 +tip.
Extra EXTRA extra: I want to get him some warm sweaters and treats :)
UPDATE: I got the money to buy his diapers and his supplements! My roommate was able to buy him his food as well! Gonna see about getting him in to the groomer sometime soon for a trim! Will still need money for that one, though
Total Main Goal: $70/$70
My PayPal!

As a pet sitter I find it so wild how every cat owner I’ve sat for is like “hi this is Winston III. Here’s his bladder supplements and his 45 treats and his special food. He has 49 cat trees and his own bathroom, and gets fed four times a day, and has more toys and enrichment than I do. It’s his house actually, I just live here.”
Meanwhile most dog owners (save for two in the year and a half I’ve been sitting) are like “here’s Spot. He eats grain-based Purina because it’s the cheapest on the shelf. he’s so overweight and he has heart issues and, unrelated actually, you can’t take him for a walk because he pulls on a lead and we never did any socialization training haha. He also barks for 12 hours a day. What can you do 🤷‍♀️. He doesn’t listen and knows 0 commands. Oh yeah, and that’s The Cat. We just free feed them and scoop the litterbox once a week. You don’t need to worry about them”

Baked Apple Chips: A Tasty Alternative to Store-Bought Dog Treats
Facebook Instagram Pinterest When it comes to treating our beloved canine companions, we always want to provide them with the best. While store-bought dog treats are readily available, they often contain additives, preservatives, and unknown ingredients that may not be ideal for our furry friends’ health. That’s where homemade alternatives, like apple chips or crisps, come into play. In this…

i get a lot of my treats from grocery outlet because, you know, i go through a lot of treats and so the bulk of my low/med value ones may as well be cheap. and this last time they had Dog Whisperer TM branded treats at $3 for 12 oz which is a killer fucking deal so i got 2 bags.
anyway.
so one, they have the most deranged fucking instructions on send to place i have ever seen, which i'll upload in a reblog but TWO
the ingredients on these things.
i would be better off feeding my dog pieces of bread.
Wheat Flour, Soybean Meal, Ground Corn, Sugar, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Beef, Natural and Artificial Chicken Flavor, Soybean Oil, Wheat Gluten, Salt, Sodium Benzoate (Preservative), Phosphoric Acid, Potassium Sorbate (Preservative) and Propionic Acid (Preservative).
and listen. i'm not a grain free person. i have no problems with grain in treats, or even treats which are as much grain as anything else. but the first FOUR INGREDIENTS are non-meat, and that's assuming that the glycerin is bovine or porcine (reasonable assumption, these are dog treats).
hazard will eat them but he had to think about it first, which he never does.

This may be asking way much, or too much information in itself, but... I used to be in a bad relationship where I was stripped of my personhood by force and was frequently likened to dogs and wolves in negative ways. (It's been a long time now since I escaped that.) Recently, I've started to enjoy the idea of being a werewolf a little bit, but I still get anxious about the thought of being denied my humanity if I in any way welcome being a beast. Can I ask for some words of advice? Or a good greeting sniff, maybe?
Don't feel pressured to respond, I just dumped this all in your inbox with barely any prompting. I hope you have a good day anyway.
Hey there love ♡
I'm so sorry to hear you were treated that way. No one should ever be dehumanized like that against their will. I know it might be tough sometimes, but please try to remember that you are very much a person who holds great value for being the unique little gem you are ((and this goes for everyone!)). I'm very glad you're free and safe from that now!
Welcome to the werewolf/wolf creature club hun 🐺 I'm sorry it brings you anxiety despite your interest/curiosity. I'm no professional, so take my 'advice' with a grain of salt, but I think that slowly embracing this new beast you're discovering could be quite empowering and freeing for you. This time around, you're the one making the choice to safely enter that headspace. You are the one in control of what you are in that moment, no one else. No one can force it upon you, and no one can take it away from you either ((and anyone would be crazy to try either with a big bad werewolf beast! They're much too strong and powerful!)). And remember, depending on the lore, werewolves are usually at least partly human. So, even if you welcome the beast in, you will always retain a piece of your humanity!
I hope I could in some way be helpful dear anon. If you ever need a listening ear, my askbox and dms are open for you even if we aren't moots 🫶🏻 I'm giving you the biggest greeting sniff and offering up a comforting nuzzle if you'd like one ♡
