Guardrails

People have a lot of odd ideas about God. 

One of the more harmful? That God is all about rules, all about control. That God is some sort of killjoy, some sort of destroyer of free will.

Casting God as the worst sort of authority figure is a very useful thing to do – for purposes of our egos. It lets us see ourselves in the role of the bold hero, shaking loose the shackles of a tyrant whose time is long past.

So we can pretend that there’s a bit of merit (or at least give some sort of bravado) to whatever dumb thing it is that we’re doing.

The germ of truth in that is that God does have rules. But the reality of God’s rules is far less helpful for those of us who want to imagine that we’re brave rebels.

The reality is that God’s rules are like the guardrails on a mountain highway. In the sense that they are there for our safety, to protect us from harm.

They’re also like guardrails on a mountain highway in the sense that there are no armed guards. You and I are free to drive over the guardrails, sending our cars hurtling towards disaster if we want to. No one’s going to stop us.

The thing is, with God’s guardrails, there’s more to it than just safety. With God’s guardrails, there’s an even greater benefit to not driving over them.

That greater benefit is what Jesus is talking about in today’s Gospel when he says,

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”

The greater benefit is found in that rest. In the peace that comes from resting in God, that comes from letting God worry about where the edge is and how far is too far.

That comes from letting God be God.

Knowing that no matter what happens you’re not going to fall over the edge. You don’t have to worry about it.

Because when you let God be God, you’re inside the guardrail.

The FTC announced last week that it would host a competition challenging private citizens to find solutions to protect people from AI-generated phone scams.The scams can use AI to clone a loved one’s voice, making it sound like they’re in trouble and tricking unsuspecting people into coughing up big bucks. The FTC is offering a $25,000 reward to anyone who can innovate a solution, essentially leveraging the same AI technology to protect consumers, Maxson said. Applications will open in January. The agency previously held similar crowdsourcing competitions to help combat robocalls.

Is what I bowled yesterday evening.

Not bad. I usually start with my highest score and immediately work my way down from there.

This time around the occasion was a rescheduled holiday party: from the midst of December into the middle of January.

I wouldn't mind if it was always the middle of January, to be honest.

Either way, the occasion was yet more proof to me that I've gotta get out of the edit suite more often to check out what's going on in the production/post-production/live production rest of the world. A friend of mine with whom I spoke after the bowling already intentionally does this. They visit other production units and events to see how other teams accomplish the same things. My friend talks to people like me because post-production is a whole other universe from live production no matter how adjacent a universe it is. More than any other time, there are tools that allow us to do things that were unequivocally impossible not even a year ago.

How is each of us using them?

And what should the guardrails for this new technology be?

I spoke with a number of photographers yesterday, conversations that reminded me how tight the collaboration between production and post-production can be because of what's possible now.

The old ways (far back as 2023) no longer apply. Not if we wanna take advantage of the impossible. Not if we wanna accomplish greater, more impressive things together.

So anyway. I always forget how productive these get-togethers are. A little how's the family. A little what ya doing? A little how're you doing it? And a bit of show 'n tell.

Microsoft revealed a number of exciting new features in Copilot Studio earlier this year, including the ability to build autonomous agents. In addition to supporting anything from your IT help desk to employee onboarding, agents can serve as a personal concierge for sales and service by leveraging the context of your work data in Fabric, Dataverse, Systems of Record, and Microsoft 365 Graph.

Companies such as Thomson Reuters, Pets at Home, McKinsey & Company, and Clifford Chance are already developing autonomous agents to boost profits, cut expenses, and scale their influence. The pilot demonstrated a 90% reduction in lead time and a 30% reduction in administrative effort. To expedite the legal due diligence process, Thomson Reuters developed a professional-grade agent; preliminary testing revealed that certain tasks may be completed in half the time. This agent can improve Thomson Reuters’ new business funnel and help clients work more efficiently.
