worldbuilding question: one of my OCs, Terry Cephałysiak, is from Anenomemeland (Splatoon version of Lithuania). Do you think Balkanization (basically the idea of a kingdom or nation becoming too large and needing to divide itself) is possible in the Mollusk Era? I say this because you mentioned that there are 20 countries, but I don't think there are ONLY 20 of them.
yeah no I never said there's only 20 countries, it's that there are at least 20.
the mollusk era roughly mirrors human history so I don't see why not
the answer for "could this thing or concept that exists in our society reasonably happen or exist in the splatoon world in some way" 99.9% of the time the answer is yes they got a a whole giant planet and thousands of years of history too a lot of shit happens.
any niche job you can think of, any political system, horrific crime, genre of movie or music, kinds of cuisine (minus anything that uses mammal products and even that has substitutes) could reasonably exist or have existed in the splatoon world in some way or at some point

A Runaway's Journal
*written in a slightly tattered spiral notebook with a blue cover*
Day 1
We left, not too long ago. Mom took me in the middle of the night and told me to be silent while we crept through the basement and the garage. I was really scared. We ran down the road for a while and then Mom stole a car. We drove that to the airport and now we are flying on an airplane. Mom says that we are going to visit my Uncle Stuart. I don't think I've met him before. Mom says that I'll have to change my name and my birthday and everything because we're running away from my father and if he finds us, he'll kill us. She says he probably would have killed us if we stayed.
I got to play exy yesterday. It was a lot of fun and I played with Kevin and Riko. They say that someday we will be Court. Riko and Kevin will be strikers and I'll be a backliner. But then we had to go to a room in the stadium and watch my father kill someone. I guess he was trying to kill Riko. I hate when he makes me watch. Kevin looked scared the whole time and Riko was too but I think he was trying to hide it. Now I won't be able to play exy anymore. Mom says I'm not even allowed to talk about it.
I had to leave my toys and most of my clothes at home. Mom had a backpack for me that had two shirts and two pants and some underwear and socks in it. She says everything I want from now on needs to fit in my backpack. That means I can only have my clothes pretty much.
Uncle Stuart is supposed to teach me how to shoot a gun. Lola taught me how to use knives like my father but Mom says a gun is better. Then you don't have to be so close. She said she's also going to get me a bulletproof vest. Then if my father's people catch up, I have some protection.
I wonder what my name is going to be. Mom said she'll pick it for me and tell me after. I wish she would let me pick but she said I wasn't allowed to argue about it. Arguing with her is scary so I guess she gets to figure out who I am. She'll change her name too. She made me start learning German last year and now she says that I'm going to have to only speak it once we leave Uncle Stuart's house. He lives in England. I'll have a German name and so will she. She also said she's going to dye my hair and get contact lenses so that I don't look like my father anymore. He can’t know what I look like or he'll find me and kill me.
I'm not allowed to tell anyone about myself. Mom says that having friends could be dangerous so if I do have friends, I have to lie to them.
I don't want my father to kill anyone anymore like he killed that man with Riko and Kevin or any of the times he killed someone in the basement. I hate when he brings me down into the basement. Lola scares me so much too because she likes it when my father kills people. She smiles and laughs when they scream and that makes my nightmares worse.
I'm glad that my mom forgot this notebook inside my backpack. It's nice to have a place to write this down because Mom gets mad if I try to talk to her about it. Maybe she'll be happier when we get off this plane and we get to Uncle Stuart's house but I don't think she will. I'll have to keep this secret.

I decided to try writing Neil's story from his perspective, as if he were writing it in a journal. I'm trying to capture the writing style of a ten year old boy and as the story progresses, his writing should develop to match his age.
I have more written but I'll post it every few days or so. Feel free to poke me via asks or dms if it's been a few days and you want more!

Yo why is my country trending? People can't even find it on the map.
Edit:
So people know a little more about Singapore other than it's a racing track here's a little synopsis of my country.
This is Singapore. We're one of the tiniest countries in the world, about the size of half of the state of Rhode Island. We are so small we call ourselves the little red dot because you gotta zoom real close to find us on any world map.
Despite being so small we are a bustling city in the heart of South East Asia with 5.4 million people calling it home. It's one of the densest populations in the world in one area. But despite that we try our best to make our little island a home.
As we are in the tropical equator, nature and modernisation go hand in hand here. We sometimes are known as the solar punk city for our vertical forests and abundance of nature in the city. Land is very limited when your entire country is one island, so everything in Singapore grows up, from our sky scrapers to our forests.
The same goes for inside our buildings too. As a country primarily used as a business hub, shipping port and flight connection stop between airlines, we have the world's best airports and malls with stunning waterfalls in like this one, with efficient transport and AC in practically every mall you go to.
The streets are safe at night too as the city doesn't sleep even when the sun goes down. The roads are so bright at night the sky isn't even dark at night. Fun fact that weird creature spewing water is the symbol of our country the merlion, and we're one of the only countries represented by a mythical animal.
Singapore's not a perfect country. It's ridiculously hot here and there's lots of rules and regulations and we still need to work on many things like affordable housing and LGBTQ equality, but it's definitely a unique little island in the South East Asian part of the world with great food and great people.
Definitely check out my country if you're ever in the area, we're not just the setting for that one Crazy Rich Asians movie and the F1/Grand Prix.

cannot handle that mournful self serious post going around claiming that by 1920 nobody born after 1890 would know why you needed to know how to make a candle or look after a horse like… truly I understand it’s very appealing hyperbole but it is also very stupid and wrong. sorry.
of course i sympathise with the desire to feel special and sad about technological shifts but this is not it. buy an external cd drive and get over it. they are like a tenner.
“I memorise phone numbers just in case… in case what?” wow so true and nostalgic bestie. maybe in case your phone gets lost or stolen or runs out of battery? all the obvious reasons? the children of today are also memorising phone numbers? you are not a throwback in a time of technological change. you are the same as the rest of us.
The fact that op said there was now no situation in which they would need a paper map demonstrates how wild this perspective is. girl you are going to die on a mountain sorry.
