Part 9: On the King’s Blade (King of Hell!Sam)

With the end of the month just a few days away, you were desperate. The boys had taken such good care of you, giving you so much pleasure. But that also made this “no cum November” such a challenge. And they weren’t about to let up now. If anything, they were ramping up.

Sam promised a rest after one more case.

Dean said it was a quick check-in with some fellow hunters.

To their credit, it was moving quickly. But their teasing was making this case feel like it was going to take eons.

Asking the witness another question, Dean slid his hand into his pocket. You were too busy taking notes to notice. Until the toy inside you started buzzing.

You sucked in a breath. Closing your eyes, you steadied your nerves. When the witness gave you a questioning look, you lightly rubbed your nose. “Sorry. Almost sneezed. Late seasonal allergies.”

They nodded and continued answering questions. Dean eventually turned off the toy, giving you a respite. Then Sam walked up. He scrolled over the “notes” from the last witness on his phone. The nipple clamps hidden under your shirt activated. Thankfully, your blazer hid your stiffened nipples.

They continued back and forth, sometimes overlapping, until they had talked to everyone they wanted to. Only then did both toys turn off. Sam placed his hand on your lower back and guided you to the car. The backseat doors were barely closed before you were clawing at his belt buckle.

He gripped your wrists and held them back. “Nuh-uh, we’ve left you kind of alone in this challenge. So, for the last few days, we’re joining you. No cumming for us either.”

“But,” you pouted, “it’s not a real challenge is I don’t get to touch you like you guys touched me.”

Dean laughed in the front seat. “That’s- that’s a good point. But can we at least get to the hotel before you start stripping a federal officer in the backseat?”

With a humph, you sat back. A few minutes later, you cried out as Dean drove past the motel. “Hey-“

“Hungry. One more stop.”

At the corner diner, Dean walked behind you. He caught your hips and whispered in your ear, “we also need a break. If you got your hands on us now…” He tugged you back into his crotch. His hard-on pressed thickly into your backside. “Sweetheart, we’d bust.”

That didn’t keep them continuing their game in the booth while you ordered. You were two seconds away from a panting mess when another person appeared in the booth.

“Cas!” Dean held a hand to his chest. “Don’t do that.”

His eyes glittered with amusement. But then he squinted. And turned to face you.

“Don’t scan me,” you said, pointing a finger at him. “Just don’t. I’m fine.”

He didn’t. He scanned Sam. “Are you hunting a witch or something? Are you cursed?”

Sam sputtered into his drink. “No. We’re fine. You popped in for a reason?”

Cas quickly ran through some information concerning angel movements and demon activity. Then Dean cut him off.

“As long as it’s not another apocalypse, it’s gonna be a minute before we can help out. We’ve been running through cases back-to-back.”

“Yes.” Cas glanced over the three of you. “And you must get your… rest.” He cleared his throat. “There are a few leads I’d like to check out. Should take a week or so.”

Sam grinned, strained as you rested your hand on his thigh. “Perfect. We’ll rest up until we hear from you again.”

Cas paused before leaving. “What’s no-cum-Nove-“

“Just go,” Dean groaned.

After a blink, the angel was gone. After another few seconds, you all burst into laughter.

So imagine you're a young, insecure guy. Maybe you're queer or nuerodivergent or otherwise just Not Like Other Boys, but you haven't gotten all that sorted out yet. You don't know much about feminism, but you have recognised the toxicity in mainstream masculinity and you want other options, but you don't know what those options might be. You are also insecure and young and want to be taken seriously as a man.

And then you watch Firefly, and it shows you a world where men are able to express their feelings and have healthy and fulfilling friendships -- with other men and with women -- and still be masculine. And, importantly, these characters are cool and badass and taken seriously by other characters and by the fanbase. They aren't jokes or losers, when they express emotions they aren't mocked or told to man up.

It also shows a world where women exist as more than just girlfriends and wives and mothers -- women are friends and colleagues and valued for their skills and personality as much as for their looks and relationships.

It blows your mind, because you are young and dumb and this is the first time you're seeing somethig like that outside of media made for and by women.

And then you grow up and realise that you're gay and you read up on feminism and find that Whedon was doing a very surface level baby playtime thing. You hear women talking about how Whedon's female characters fall into harmful stereotypes and in retrospect, yeah, they're right, Whedon's female characters might have been more plentiful and varied than what you were used to at the time, but they're still pretty damn stereotyped and most of them are still defined by their relationships with male characters.

But at the time, it was baby's first introduction to the idea that a man could have a healthy friendship with a woman or express an emotion without being called a faggot.

So that's why I thought Whedon was the bee's knees when I was a teenager.

Also, I thought the quippy humour was pretty fun and the band of misfits on a junky spaceship was cool and exciting. I still think found-family-on-a-spaceship is a cool trope, but the humour was only fun for its novely and it wore thin pretty quickly.

"Ah, Justice of God, who heaps up such strange punishment and pain as I saw there? and why do our sins so waste us?" For Santino D'Antonio: John Wick's bitter ex, my most beloved villain, and whose name means sacred or little saint.

John Wick 2 may have come out nearly a decade ago, but being a Santino girl is a chronic condition. Cover and track list images are details from Caravaggio's Bacchus, and the epigraph is from Canto VIII of Inferno, translated by Robert and Jean Hollander.

This playlist mostly started because I was listening to "Young Caesar 2000," said to myself, wow, this would be a great Santino song, and put it alone on a new playlist. From there, for about a year, I'd throw on anything that particularly reminded me of Santino, songs that felt, not like they described him, but that they might narrate part of his inner monologue and feeling. Some John/Santino vibes starting slipping in there (almost inevitably), but I knew I wanted to keep things really closely tied to how Santino understands himself. I narrowed things down, did some ordering for the overall arc and (hopefully) smooth transitions, and here we are!

Essential to my understanding of Santino (and thus this playlist's formation) is NeverwinterThistle's Unholy Union and asuralucier's The Man You Want to Be, both of which you should absolutely run, not walk, to read.

I'll let the tracklist mostly speak for itself, but I hopefully captured Santino's arrogance and the fundamental emptiness and deep insecurity that arrogance covers. I really do think John is something real and true for Santino, in a world full of posturing, but he eventually cannot resist instrumentalizing John, just like everyone else. JW 2 is one of the JW movies most pessimistic about masculinity (if not THE most pessimistic), and the arc of this playlist would certainly be very different without Mitksi's "I'm Your Man." Which is Mitski's most pessimistic song about masculinity! So it all works out.

The title -- The fact that Santino's name means "little saint" has fascinated me since my first cursory google search that delivered this factoid, and I've always kept it in my back pocket when thinking about Santino as a character. He's always the little brother. His petulance and pettiness is so essential to his character, and it's, of course, what makes him such a great foil to John (who imagines himself as a rational actor, but has his matching streak of the petulance). Santino inherits all this splendor, and all he can do is try and claw out more and more. A petty saint, and certainly never a god.

Why Bacchus? -- Well, I was trying to get a good film still for the cover and eventually gave up, so then I went to go find something appropriately aesthetic for a playlist cover. I was going to do a Dutch Golden Age still life bc that's what I'm writing about rn and lushness (and rot) is so essential to Santino, but then I was like. this guy is Italian. SUPER Italian. Who's an Italian with dramatic shadows and lush still lifes? And thus Caravaggio. Bacchus because revelry, excess, beauty, ect....also the invitation of the painting--he's holding out the goblet to you, asking you to join him. But mostly because it's beautiful.

Why Dante? -- I KNEW this bitch had to have an epigraph from Inferno once I realized this was going to be a real playlist. I mean, speaking of pessimism! The Divine Comedy feels so crazy to read as a modern reader bc it's like. yeah all this suffering is God's perfect justice. That guy eating his own shit is part of the divine plan. Which, to me, lines up really well with my read on masculinity in the JW movies--perfect, unchangeable, and committing you to endless suffering.

Alright, let's really get into it. This tercet ("Ah, Justice of God, who heaps up / such strange punishment and pain as I saw there? / and why do our sins so waste us?") come early in Canto 7, as Virgil and Dante (our POV character and protagonist) leave the third circle of Hell, Gluttony, and enter the fourth circle, Avarice and Prodigality ("Why do you squander...Why do you hoard" is probably the most famous quote from this circle). If Santino was to end up anywhere, it would be in one of those two circles, so I enjoy that this is the point in the text Dante asks these two questions!

Speaking of: despite God's perfection, Dante sure loves to question what he sees in hell and then...not resolve those questions in any way. It's interesting to see that "who heaps up / such strange punishment and pain as I saw there?" is a question addressed to the "Justice of God" when. well. the Justice of God is the thing heaping up these strange punishments and pain!

Dante seems unaware of the paradox, here, which has a real resonance for me in the way Santino is just like, well, I HAVE to blow up your house, John! I HAVE to put out a hit on you after you fulfill the marker, John! But to point to the times he acted out of compassion (not calling in John's marker during his retirement) would completely undermine that logic. It says "there are some things more important than power," but if Santino acknowledged that, then he wouldn't be able kill his sister.

Dante can't walk through hell and say with his whole chest, "I don't think it should be like this, actually" and still trust and love God, so he doesn't. Santino can't believe "more power will make me more happy, our culture says so," and also consciously acknowledge that it's the culture under the Table (and his father!!! his god!!!) that has pitted him against his sister his whole life, that has instilled in him values that ultimately leave him empty. So he doesn't! And he dies trapped in that paradox.

And then that second question. "And why do our sins so waste us?" UGH. ugh. Dante. You fucking hit me hard with this one. This is the line that made me choose this tercet. There's so much to Santino, so much beauty, so much divinity--but our sins waste us. All that power is used only in pursuit of more power, and, in the end, he's destroyed by that pursuit. The first two lines of the tercet key into culture and the way we contort our selves to fit into culture, but this last line is just an exclamation of the tragedy. Why? we ask, and nobody answers.

thinking about my tortoise. idk if you guys know about him his name is chaim and he was originally my sister's 2nd grade class pet and he came to us because we petsat him a ton over breaks and then the teacher had to nove to a non-classroom job where she wouldn't have a space to keep him and so she asked us if we wanted to keep him because she knew we loved him so much and always took good care of him :'D and we said YES and then he came home with us and now it's been about uhhhhh maybe 8ish years and we love him so so much. here he is doing his favorite activity: walking into the front door of our apartment for an hour

At the very end of Ptolomaea, you can hear what sounds like a man speaking Portuguese saying "Ligue para... um oito oito oito, nove nove nove, sete quatro oito oito" which translates to "Call 1-888-999-7488". Me, @uglymothwife, and @snaileggs have tried to figure out what this number means but we've just found that it might be a debt collection agency based in America, and it might just be some guy who lives in California.

What is this? Is it just some random radio noise? Help.

Fangs and Fur chapter 6

*warning: mentions of blood and violence*

Angel couldn't believe it..

[ a human. A human in his own house! No wonder his stuff went missing. This little morsel thought it could just march in his house and do whatever it wanted! ]

Gritting his teeth he forced a smile, staring down at the human. At least he didn't swallow some nasty bug. Sighing he spoke up

"..would ya look at that, a little human."

He chuckled slightly, yet his tail swished around in annoyance. What did this human think he.. she? Urgh, he'd have to take a closer look. If they wore baggy clothing or had longer hair, like this one, they were practically barely able to be told apart. Luckily.. or unluckily this human wore ragged and quite filthy clothing. Disgusting. This is what he ate? The little guy could've at least presented themselves in nicer clothing, honestly.

Angel began sniffing the tiny morsel in his hand and despite the faint smell of curry lingering on their body, it was clear this must've been a guy. He felt the human flinch and stiffen as he sniffed him. A small chuckle emitted from his throat in response, causing the guy to shiver. Good. He deserved it for ruining his meal.. that just begged the question... How did he end up here.

Xavier's heart skipped a beat as he felt the muzzle of the creature press against him. The somewhat rapid and quick inhales through his huge nose made Xavier assume he was being sniffed. He had to hug his own clothes to prevent them from being practically stripped from the force of each inhale this beast took. Even after being spoken directly to, he didn't respond. Despite his body being soaked, his mouth was as dry as a Savannah. He didn't enjoy this.. it felt as if he was some new trinket a child found and was going to destroy in a few days. Just now he wasn't in the clutches of a curious child, but a monster that barely even saw him as a person. Rage built up again, reminiscing of the lives lost that day. Not thinking before acting he pushed away the nose or at least attempted to do so, barely even noving it from its position. He quickly regretted that, as with a huff the giant pulled away, however pressed his giant finger on his body. The air forced itself out of his lungs as he began to struggle getting any air in. Unfair. It was so unfair. He didn't do anything to deserve this..

Angel observed the squirming human, still smiling "Seems like someone got stuck.. heh. Need help little guy?.." shaking his head, seeing how the human was gasping, practically begging for air, he stopped pressing against the tinies chest. The human shot him quite the deadly glare after he stopped. Seems like someone still had some fire in them, but that merely amused him. "God, not even a thank you, no? I just saved your little self and you stare at me as if I killed ya entire family!" though to his surprise he noticed a hint of sadness in the humans eyes. Tsk, so what.. he wasn't the one snooping around someone's property. Cocking a brow he heard a small mumble emit from the human. "hmm? What was that? Mind repeating yourself, so not just the dust particles will hear you?" That merely seemed to fire the guy up as he screamed with pure rage and hatred "you... You fucking did! You killed.. You killed them all! You're a.. a..-"

Xavier couldn't finish his sentence, as the large digits closed around his body, squeezing him threateningly. Trying to squirm around was futile, that just provoked the giant to squeeze harder. Despite that, the giants expression remained the same. Smiling down in such a mocking way. At least he tried telling himself that. It was soft, sweet, kind.. fake. Everything he hated about this creature was fueled with just one smile. But he had to keep shut for his own safety. "Go on.. apologise. Apologise for saying such... Impertinent thing." The small smile turned into a grin. Xavier wanted nothing more than to continue berating him, but refrained, It wasn't worth losing his head over, quite literally.

Trying his best to sound as friendly as possible he spoke "Yes.. yes of course, .. sir, I a- apologise sincerely for. . . Saying that." Forcing a smile, he had to prevent himself from bursting into tears. He felt like some toy to the beast to play with, no.. no. He didn't just feel this way, he was right. The playful glint in the creatures eyes proved him to be right, to his discontent. He sighed in relief feeling the hand slowly loosen, at least now he wasn't squeezed anymore.

With that, they went back to their staring contest. His heartbeat quickened as he felt the giant poke him, causing him to flinch. A shiver ran through his already trembling body as he heard the giant chuckling slightly. Losing himself in the giants huge eyes, his mind began to race from all sorts of things. Those thoughts did nothing but make his current situation much, much worse.

[ Maybe it already knew he was 'living' in its house. Pretending to not see him.. tormenting him with the fear of being seen or caught, just too finally be in its grasp in a grand finale. The possibility wouldn't be too out there. ]

The image of the giant somehow having observed him while sleeping crept up. Taking up his mind, as he couldn't help but sniffle. He wasn't some.. zoo animal one could visit and view.So lost in thought, he didn't even notice just how close the giant had leaned in, having observed his thoughts by trying to place his facial expressions correctly.

Angel observed its tiny movements, as it thought about.. something. Perhaps him, perhaps a way to escape... Not that he would allow that, after what he did. No one ruins his dinner and gets away with it so easily. He looked down to the mans dirty shirt, seeing a, to him, miniscule name tag with the name Xavier on it. Xavier... This must've been the lil guys name. Quite adorable for someone as disrespectful as this tiny guy.

Thinking about what the lil man said, realisation of what happened hit.

[ Fuck. He must've not been careful enough and now this little creep was in his home. ]

He laughed nervously and looked away, seeing how the human was staring into his eyes trying to read him back. Humans, to his displeasure, were one curious creatures. At least he could make this stupid Xavier guy stop his curiosity with a single hand motion.

Feeling the hand tilt Xavier screeched, grabbing parts of the fur on the large hand, to prevent his fall. A tear rolled down his cheek, as he burried his face into the huge hand to make sure the giant didn't see him in his more emotional state. A part of him wanted nothing more than to let go and let the free fall claim him, but he wouldn't let this monster have the pleasure of doing whatever it wanted to his corpse. Even if it was just tossing it into the trash. He wasn't trash..no no not like this beast. Slowly he turned his head as far he could to face the giant. He wasn't just red from exhaustion, but also anger. Hot flaming anger that clawed his insides.

"awh, looks like someone is mad~!" the cruel tone wasn't missing, oh how right he was. But he wouldn't admit that, he wouldn't satisfy this giants twisted desires, no matter how much it would hurt.. "Oh, don't give me that cold stare. You should be lucky that I'm not the one giving you it. Haha..hehe ...-" something changed. Something about that look was different and not something Xavier was looking forward to. He already accepted the fact he could never gain sympathy from someone like him. Not that he would want that, his pride wouldn't allow it. The giant walked over to the counter and dropped him on it. Making him land on it with a thud. He hugged himself, shivering from the harsh treatment he had been recieving so far. Another tick off of the list of bruises he received during his duration of his stay. God how on earth did he end up in this damned situation. Was asking for a simple life all too much?! At least his suffering would end soon.

Seeing how he was right next to the pot of curry, he frowned, believing he'd be be dropped right in. He sniffled, not again, he thought. With his head on his arms, he closed his eyes. Like a child hiding under the blanket to hide from the monsters of the dark, he felt. Pathetic.. Awaiting for the stingy curry to cover his already slimy body. To his surprise however, the only thing he noticed was noises of the giant rummaging through his stuff. Tilting his head ever so slightly, peeking from his arms, he saw how the giant was looking for..something.

Before he could figure out what it could possibly be, he saw how the giant pulled out his tiny bag. Grinning he turned to face the human. "Knew I smelled something weird earlier. Guess this little thing belongs to you, yeah.. yeah made out of things you stole from me. This was the proof I needed.. oh what am I saying, of course you stole from me you little bug. Tsk, what did I expect."

Angel tossed the bag in front of Xavier who didn't miss the cruel glint in the giants crimson eyes. At this point the rude remarks went over his head, he wouldn't let himself be teased with. He averted the stare, searching for a way to escape instead. The hole in which he came from was his only exit out of the grasp of this sadistic asshole.A grunt from the giant alerted him and made him stare back at him. At first the giant seemed displeased with seeing him trying to get away. He had followed his own gaze to the hole. He could tell by the way the giant looked at it, that he was thinking of something. All of a sudden something in his demeanour changed as a grin spread across it's huge face. As if a lightbulb lit up and it could act out one of its vicious fantasies.

He braced himself for something... Anything, as the huge body shifted. "Well, little Xavier, why don't we meet each other properly, hmm?" a new wave of fear hit as he heard his own name come from the sweet tunes of the giant. It was a not wanted surprise for sure. That wasn't even the worst part as with a sudden motion the giant slammed both his fists on the counter on each side of his tiny body. His body still shivered, even after the vibrations stopped shaking his body. With no time to waste, the giant continued in a soft melodic tone, "My name is Angel! You probably saw me before, haha! ... Of course you did. Yeah, not only did you see me, but you lived in my house uninvited! Do you... Humans.. not understand the word privacy or something? Hehe.. not wanting to be rude, but it doesn't seem like you fucking do! Hahaha!" Xavier's breath hitchend as he saw how tight this so called "Angel" clenched his fist. He gulped hard, the anger that filled his body pouring out as tears dropped down to the ground.

"Crying now, are we? How sad.. oh boohoo, you little rat can't live in your hole anymore and... And watch me go about my day like the crazy creep you are! Heh.. but don't you worry your little head, I'll give you a chance to survive. A way to leave my house and.. Never return! All you have to do is play a little game with me. A simple game of cat and mouse" Xavier scooted away from the crazed visage before him, he was barely even listening, his ears were filled with the noise of hot blood pumping through them, ready to run away. Though he froze as he heard the games name, cat and.. mouse? Building up the courage to speak, with a quivering voice he asked "a..and how do you... Play?" somehow, out of pure luck, the giant heard his little squeaky noises, even if he regretted asking. "Oh don't ya lose your little head! Haha! The game will have plenty of opportunities for you to lose it! Heh.. since you already love crawling around in my walls, why don't you exactly that! And me? Well, I'll chase you of course! Your only job is to make sure I don't catch ya! ... And if you think hiding in the tiny tunnels will save you. . .well" He walked over to one of the walls, making sure Xavier was still too frozen to run, as he raised a fist and with full force punched a hole through the wall. Without even tilting his head back in Xavier's direction, his eyes darted to stare deeply into his soul. His eyes didn't hide his horrific nature anymore. Xavier could've sworn he felt his soul leave his body as another and another wave of fear flooded his body. Now he truly felt like nothing but a piece of fresh prey for this beast to hunt. In a creepy way, the giant twisted its head back at him.

Approaching him and leaning down, chuckling. "I will give you a head start.. 10 seconds.. alright? Be grateful you pesky creature that that's the amount of time I'm given ya. Oh and.. one more thing." slowly he leaned down, further, making sure to be as close as possible to the human before he could trigger any instinct making him run on his own. Whispering into his ear, he spoke in a cold manner "If you think you can win.. think again... You won't be able to outrun me forever."

With that Xavier scrambled to his feet and without thinking ran into the hole he came from. His breathing was fast and quickened with each step. Angels voice echoed in his mind as he counted down. He would have much rather only heard the blood pounding in his body, than to hear his melodic voice. Something drew him to his sirens singing. The first blow to the wall was worse than he expected, he almost tripped and fell as the deafening noise of the giants hand burst through it. The ringing in his ears remained even till the next blow. Though he knew nothing now, but to run through the rusty old pathways that lead his way. He had no plan but to try to survive for as long as possible. At some points the dizziness began plaguing him, daring to make him trip and slip into an endless slumber, knowing fully well he wouldn't escape regardless. His body screamed for him to stop, but he couldnt, his instincts overpowered the knowledge that he wasnt being chased. The obvious way the giant made sure to grab into the wall to trigger him pushing himself further, yet made sure to not grab him entirely became obvious to him after each puncture of the pathways. There was no point in running, but he didn't know anything else anymore. His adrenaline tore his body to its limits, not allowing him to stop for a minute. His heart ached... Burned with the desire to live, yet the pain made him want to throw up.

Every so often the giant would peek through the holes to make sure he wasn't taking any form of break, making sure to cause fear in his heart by pretending to almost grab him or bite him. The manic laughs, of the giant, echoed through the chambers, breaking any form of hope he had of escaping. He truly was nothing more than a toy that was used to break itself. He had no plan.. nothing, only living the little life he was given. He had to live no matter what, no matter how much he had to lie to himself, knowing this was the end. He hadn't even been keeping track on where he was going, as he bumped into a dead end.

He wanted to cry, to scream, but nothing came out. He didn't even have the energy to do that. As if on command, his body turned around and began to run again, just this time, that was cut short as the walls around him began to crumble...

Seems like not even the giant knew there was a dead end.

In a last ditch effort, he jumped, to escape the inevitable. The walls around him began to crumble as sharp pain hit his left leg. Looking down he saw the gruesome display of his now bloody leg being stuck between two rocks. Fresh blood trickled down into the abyss as he tried heaving himself up. He inhaled the dust that got stirred up, making this process even more painful. Stinging his lungs and his hear, his trembling arms tried pushing themselves to their limit, but he couldn't do it. This was it..

Facing the beast one last time, he stared into those violent eyes one last time. His arms caved, like the rest of his body. As his head hit the ground, darkness enveloped him. He'd die knowing he did nothing special in his life.. he was a nobody. A small smile formed, now he could be released from his suffering.

A tear rolled down his dirty face and with that, he closed his eyes. Accepting his fate.

#K4: Gatchaman Crowds

Crowds is a very ambitious anime in my opinion! It takes place in a world not too different from ours, where most problems are solved quickly due to an app that everyone uses. Technology makes it so that everyday people can save each other. In a world where everyone’s a hero, what use are heroes? What even makes one? It follows a girl named Hajime as she joins a team of superheroes with her unique perspective. If you like animes that are different and somewhat whimsical (with the occasional battle). This might be up your alley!

The visuals are also unique and colorful, with creatures and locations that can be pretty abstract. The characters are interesting, each have their own personalities, perspectives, and motivations for what they do. Crowds is short, but it manages to give everyone some kind of character arc, and give them depth. I personally find the team very endearing, and Rui has STYLE! As a fellow guy who wears dresses and heels sometimes, I love him very much.

Also, THE MUSIC. If you don’t check out the anime you should at least check out the opening and ending songs, they are absolute bangers.

Blood, murder, manipulation. I don’t remember there being transphobia/homophobia, but anime has a bad track record in general and there are 1 or 2 LGBT characters and I could have forgotten.

#K5: Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViVid

It’s such an interesting setting, like it’s so fucking weird and I love it despite the queerbaiting. But basically these two magical girls retire ro run a dojo and adopt another magical girl who was abused. It focuses on the abused kid (previous series focused on the two magical girls) and that kid learning to be a kid and fight not for survival but like fun, and making friends and having a family they trust. All while in a sci-fi magical world with some fascinating and enjoyable world building. It has flaws, but for me the setting and characters make up for the sometimes misogynistic additions.

Ok so it is a game series by Valve where you (mostly) play as a theoretical physicist named Gordon Freeman. He worked at a top-secret science facility called Black Mesa and they were experimenting on a crystal from a border world planet called Xen and ended up accidentally ripping a portal open to Xen (it was called the Resonance Cascade), and Gordon (And a security guard named Barney Calhoun and two other theoretical physicists named Colette Green and Gina Cross and a HECU Marine named Adrain Shephard) had to fight the aliens had to come through. Also everyone but Adrian also had to fight the HECU marines because they HECU are there to bascially go in and kill everyone and everything in Black Mesa if things go to shit. Anyways. Gordon fights everything and ends up going to Xen and kills the Nialanth which is the giant alien baby-looking thing which had every other alien under it's control, it was also the last on it's kind. So yeah Gordon kills it then the G-man shows up and is like "Hey Gordon. Join me or I'll let all the remaining aliens kill you" so Gordon joins him. And twenty years later Gordon wakes up on a train going to City 17, which is one of the last remaining urban centers after the Combine, a race of fascist aliens took over the world after finding earth through the Resonance Cascade and they took over the whole world. Anyways now everyone is kinda like. Under the Combine's rule. So anyways Barney finds Gordon and brings him to Dr. Kleiner (Dr. Kleiner is Gordon's mentor and science dad) and everyone is so happy to see Gordon! That's also when we first meet Alyx (she is my wife I love her) and Gordon gets his power armour back, and he has to go to Black Mesa east where Eli is (Eli is Alyx's dad and Gordon's old co-worker) and he goes to do that and Comine shoot at him. Oh yeah Gordon's old boss Dr. Breen is working with the Comine that's important. Anyways he gets to Black Mesa East and sees Eli again (Alyx is also there cuz she teleported first but Gordon didn't) and they hang out a bit (Eli's friend Judith Mossman is there too, she's important) before Black Mesa East gets attacked because SOMEONE ratted them out so everyone scatters and Gordon has to go to Ravenholm (We don't go the Ravenholm) which is filled with zombies and there's this preist guy named Father Grigori is there, he's chill, he gives Gordon a shotgun and they fight the zombies together before Ravenholm gets set on fire and Father Grigori runs into the flames because he won't leave his people. So Gordon is just kinda there now. And then he finds out Eli is at Nove Prospekt (The Combine's really big prison) so Gordon goes on a road trip to find him. He also finds out what Antlions are are also learns how to control them throught the pheremone pods the antlions have. So he gets to Nova Prospekt and tries to find Eli and fights some guards and antlions and shit but Eli isn't there! So he meets up with Alyx again and they go back to Kleiner's lab. They also found out Judith betrayed everyone because she hates Gordon for taking her job. Anyways. So it turns out an entire week has passed way to fast because of the teleporter mishap. And the uprising started! Yay! So yeah they decide to go to the Citadel. Barney joins them and they head to the Citadel, and Gordo gets in (Alyx got captured) Breen tried to get Gordon to betray his friends and but Gordon...didnt say anything, I am sure he is mute. Anyways Breen tried to contact the Combine and ends up dying, Gordon, Alyx and Eli escape, and the Citadel blows up then G-man shows up again and is just like "Just checking in <3"

Anyways that's just. 1 and 2. There are other episodes to Half Life 2 and also Half Life Alyx but my arms hurt

Ah gods, this is gonna get me crucified but sure. For some background, I’m a writer (working on historical sci-fi) and academic myself, and I’ve done a lot of academic work with language, so I’ve got some experience here.

First—it’s just not well written. It has a lot of other sins, but the characters use a lot of modern phrasing (“Nice comes from the Latin word for ‘stupid’”? Really? In 1828?) and even ignoring that the prose is so… on the nose. Footnotes which explain the obvious. Characters explaining their political beliefs at length. Lots of telling without showing.The whole thing’s written in exactly the patronizing tone the author seems to want to criticize.

The fucking footnotes, man.

I love linguistics! I should be enchanted by the footnotes! But it’s just a bunch of notes on etymology with little nuance. Again—the thing I quoted above—that’s 2000s-era-Republican-talk-show-host levels of reaching. How can a book about language, written by someone who should know better, have such shallow insights?

Etymology is great, but ultimately you can’t derive meaning from it, you know?

Second—the villains are caricatures. I don’t have an issue with every white guy in the book being a villain, but making them into caricatures actually does the patriarchy more good than harm. For such a tome, Kuang had room to make them so fucking insidious and didn’t take any of those opportunities. They’re just bad and racist.

Which—yes, some people are bad and racist. But the portrayal perpetuates the idea that racism is obvious and blatant. It’s not. I wanted to see some subtle racism—not just evil white men and a whiny, barely-tolerated white girl. (Why were they even friends with her? She felt like she was just there to prove a point.)

This is speaking as a Jew who is constantly frustrated by portrayals of antisemitism as obvious: if you want to engage with racism, engage with the insidiousness of it, you know? Mustache-twirling villains are a symptom! If you’re gonna write 500 pages about the evils of colonialism, engage with what it actually looks like.

The protagonists giving soapbox speeches don’t help the matter. I agree with them! I should be happy to listen to them! But I’m not. They’re literally preaching to the choir. Hell, it’s annoying when IRL friends speak that way—and again, who talks like that in 1828?

Third—(actually I’m gonna remove this point—I don’t feel like I can comment.)

Fourth—oh my god that tagline. “Every act of translation is an act of betrayal” are you KIDDING me. I know it’s just the tagline. I know it’s not the book. But it’s just so exemplary of this anti-academia mindset that drives me up a fucking wall. There are huge swaths of academia dedicated to language preservation, and translation is so huge for accessibility to other cultural worldviews! That line just fucking GETS me. It reeks of isolationism.

Like do you KNOW what translation can do for erased languages? I just. Ugh. It makes me so mad. I get what she was going for. I know that’s not the point. I just hate that tagline.

This whole book is anti-academic in all the wrong ways, I guess. It rages against the wrong people. I’ve spent so much time working with people on language preservation—there are SO many dying languages due to colonialism!—and nearly every young academic in the soft sciences is trying to do something revolutionary. It feels… I don’t know, it just reduces the whole environment into something that’s Twitter-levels of two-dimensional.

There’s a lot that’s wrong with academia, don’t get me wrong—I’m currently seeing some of the worst of it IRL—but she just didn’t hit it right. The whole book felt like she was fighting with a straw man when the real bad guy was like, right there.

I don’t know, I have a hard time explaining my feelings here. They’re very dense and complicated. I’m working on a response novella, actually, about the last three speakers of a dying language. It’ll explore my feelings better than I can do it here. I don’t think a direct analysis will do it justice anyway.

I think I hate it so much because I really, really wanted to love it. It had SO many things I was thrilled to see, and it just… failed. The whole thing feels immensely shallow. I haven’t even mentioned how lame the magic is, because the magic isn’t even worth mentioning. I was so looking forward to a really good take on colonialism and language magic, and instead I got something that’s well-educated but not insightful.

So—yeah. My slightly-fevery thoughts on Babel. There you go. I’m sure fans will pick this the hell apart, so please know that this has NOT been written at maximum capacity lol. I’m sure I’ve made some bad word choices.
