The thing is, in Italy they're doing a H50 rerun (even if they lost one episode along the road but hey, poor buddy must've been confused after the due sospension to broadcast the swimming European competition or wtf it was), so I'm taking advantage of this to have my nightly mcdanno boost.
All night (hello insomnia my old friend) I couldn't stop thinking how Steve, after witnessing Danny's desperate message in Rachel's voicemail in 2x15, stating that he still loves her (....poor Gabby, is she aware Danny could never love her the way he still loves R. or fall for her the way he fell for Steve?), suddenly in 2x16 feels the need to bring Cath as his pkus one at the auction. Catherine. Even if Kono and Lori were there alone. While Chin definitely didn't bring Malia, nor Danny Gabby (lol I laughed so hard when he remembered about St. Valentine's only after the others pointed it out, and panicked about the present! Talk about performance and facade). But he needed Cath exactly there. As a buffer. As a True, No-Homo, I'm-Definitely-Not-Pining-Over-My-Partner shield.
Poor Steve enters in Panick Mode™ every single time he fears he's lost Danny, either physically or emotionally (see the reckless invasion of the Governor's house in 1x24 after knowing Danny is crawling back to Rachel).
Sorry for the hundreds brackets, my brain is wacked.
I've only seen 2x15 once so forgive me if I'm getting it wrong, but I'm fairly sure the message was from months ago, at least that's how I understood it, it's just that it revealed that Danny didn't care if the baby was his and would have gotten back together with Rachel back in the beginning of S2 anyway.
I don't even think it's as simple as Danny having some ~undying love~ for Rachel, but simply clinging to the past, to this ideal of a nuclear family, because he has always felt like the failed marriage makes him a failure and like he failed Grace specifically because the divorce made her 'a child of a broken home' and the chance to repair it was too tempting to let go.
(Not to mention being back together with Rachel would have meant being a full time father to his precious babygirl instead of shared custody which has probably always been the main draw for him, he hates missing out on a single moment of Grace's life more than anything)
The thing about fantasies is they are hard to let go of even after you have changed and it's not something you want anymore, Danny wasn't the same man that came to Hawai'i 2 years ago and wished he didn't have to, he has changed and grown on a fundamental level and meeting Steve and building the ohana was a major part of that, whether he knew it or not he chose Steve over Rachel at the end of s1, it just took his mind a while to catch up.
His first priority has always been Grace so he had to try, whether that involved raising another man's baby or not. What he didn't know is that it wouldn't have mattered because Rachel took the decision from him. I think she knew he would always put Grace first but that he would never again put Rachel first and she couldn't take it.
Now, of course, Steve being new to the complexities of human relationships, didn't understand all of that, so he absolutely was devastated by the discovery. To him it must have looked like Danny loved Rachel so much he was ready to raise another man's baby as a part of the package. It must have been like being thrust back in time to that hospital room where all his hopes were dashed.
Now the timing of him leaving for weeks of maneuvers/training seems a little too appropriate. Putting a literal distance between them. I never actually thought about the timely coincidence of him bringing Cath to that black tie event, I just thought they were using her for intelligence, but now you made me think it may have served two purposes. Having her as a buffer/feelings dampener helps. Not to mention the return to the familiar/safe/easy, no chance to get his heart broken again because there's no real love there.
And yes I've written before about how having his hopes dashed may have contributed Steve to accelerate his timetable on the whole revenge thing, because he felt like he had nothing to lose, and it's also potentially why he felt like he could just up and leave Danny with nothing but a letter because he simply didn't think Danny would care that much.
(He was wrong, of course, but the entire situation is a big clusterfuck that's definitely hard to untangle. And lol I forgot about the Valentine's day thing, Danny is so used to spending Valentine's day with Steve he forgets about his actual gfs *GG*)

Top 10 McDanno moments
oh dude, making an actual list like that would take me a day, because i’m Very Bad at picking favorites and also because there’s like, literally ten seasons’ worth of moments to choose from in the first place.
a few strong contenders off the top of my head, though, in no particular order:
d: “what’s the matter with you?” / s: “i love you.” for the fact that it’s a) still a totally insane sequence of words, b) one of their three mutual i love yous on screen, which is good anyway, and c) wonderful pining steve material, as well as just, potentially the most honest reflection on their relationship from steve’s side that we ever got
pretty much the entire episode where they transport that nuclear bomb through the jungle. steve’s snooping, the first scene where they have their relationship argument in front of an entire class of innocent academy students, the “are you comparing our relationship to my failed marriage?”, the bit where danny tells steve not to say anything and steve sneaks in an i love you anyway, the bit where steve calls danny a beloved curmudgeon, when they’re squeezed under the truck together, when steve asks danny to name his friggin’ restaurant for him and rambles about being together even when they’re not together (restaurants and boats, if you name them after a person people are absolutely going to assume it’s your spouse), That Look steve throws at danny through the window at the very end of the episode.
when danny tells steve he’s a half-baked cookie and goes “that’s why i love you, babe”, because it’s just. it’s a lot.
actually, the first time steve says he loves danny, when they’re trapped under that building! danny’s been nothing but incredibly negative and he builds this huge tension before telling steve he really really hates him and steve just laughs along and goes “i love you too” because he does and he knows danny, and then once they’re finally out steve waits until danny says it back.
“you don’t have to dance with me tonight” while they’re sitting unnecessarily close together during max’s going away party, purely for the fact that i was so convinced i must have heard that wrong the first time i watched it that i went back three times. it was still the same. i still don’t know how that made it into the episode.
when danny talks about coming into work one day and seeing your partner in a different light, and he goes “know what i mean?” and steve is all quiet and says “i do”. also when steve keeps offering to go everywhere with danny that episode while danny confides in him. the episode in which danny says he once fell for his partner after he had spent every day with her and she was the only person he confided in. that episode.
season 10, maybe just, uh, in its entirety. sunshine, emotional support friend, danny being the person everyone goes to if they’re worried about steve, bad guys knowing to target danny if they want to hit steve where it hurts, moving in, sharing beds, parent-teacher meetings, the extremely half-hearted attempts at dating other people, valentine’s day cuddles, “it’s kinda like his love language for me” - season 10 truly has it all.

steve and danny somehow encounter the very tired “it’s adam and eve, not adam and steve” slogan (in the middle of interrogating someone for one of their rare cases where queer people do exist, probably) and steve’s like “oh god yes, not adam and steve. i don’t think of adam like that, and i wouldn’t want to marry anyone besides danny anyway” and danny’s like “wait, you wanna marry me?” and that’s how they figure out steve may have a ring hidden in his sock drawer.
(danny: “that’s OUR sock drawer. we share that drawer. that is not a good hiding place! who put you in charge of anything?” steve, who spent the last two months silently hoping danny would “accidentally” find the ring box and call him out on exactly this because whatever danny may say, their ideas of romance definitely overlap in the “bickering over socks and inconsequentially bad plans” department: “ah, you say that, but you didn’t find it, did you? did you even look?” danny: “why would i look for rings in my socks! why do i want to spend the rest of my life with you so badly when your brain is so weird!” their suspect, who is still cuffed to a chair next to them and has the uncomfortable feeling he just got them engaged with his homophobic rhetoric: “???”)

danny: i’m staying at steve’s temporarily.
danny: so it’s a temporary thing, you know.
danny: just until one of us dies of old age.

concept: danny comes to steve and is like “do we have an hr department?” and steve’s like “... do you want to file a complaint? i’m barely even your boss, you almost never do what i say” and danny’s like “no. i’m considering a change in relationship status and i don’t want us to get fired” and steve’s like “did you say us?” and that’s the wildly romantic story of how danny asked steve out for the first time.

season 10 is just so wild. danny sets steve up on dates but then doesn’t let him actually go on a date without calling and texting every five seconds, steve dutifully tries to ask out women but keeps mentioning how much he loves danny and that they’re married, and then danny flies across the country because steve’s mother died, suggests they could sleep in the same bed and moves in with steve maybe a week later, and steve’s just like “sssh, lou, don’t tell danny i know he’s making shit up because he might change his mind” and lets danny live with him for months. they never truly talk about what happened to danny’s house and if he might ever need to go back. there are random episodes where we are reminded that they’re both totally still interested in dating women, 100% for sure definitely, but actual potential girlfriends are an afterthought, and steve ends up turning a valentine’s date into a team movie night so he has an excuse to stick close to danny, literally, because he cuddles up between danny and his actual supposed date on the couch. the last episode tells us danny is the person steve cares about most in the world, in those precise words, and shows us that steve would try to enter a car that is on actual real fire to get to danny, and also that danny, who’s consistently been characterized as someone who can’t be happy because his anxiety keeps him too stressed all the time, is in fact now pretty happy with life. now, as in, after he didn’t get back together with rachel but instead moved in with steve with seemingly no intention to ever move back out. all of this is literal canon text, and then i didn’t even get into the easy implication that danny might be sleeping in steve’s bed some of the time after moving in because canon made a whole point of telling us there were no beds free and danny didn’t want to sleep on the couch.

I had an anon ask point out that we have a ton of gay shit to work with from series finale, and I had initially responded positively to that, because they are right.
im not pointing out the anon or attacking them, but I've been thinking all of this over, and I think I figured out why it doesnt sit well with me - that is, why all of the steve/danny content doesn’t, for me, even begin to make up for the ending.
over the last ten seasons, we have always been fed with bits and pieces of danny and steve’s relationship and love for each other. there are but a few episodes that really stand out, like the couples resort, the one with both of their girlfriends on valentines day, the “you-almost-died” episodes, et cetera. beyond those, no episodes of h50 are ever really filled with constant mcdanno content, rather peppered in with little comments and “I love you”s and small touches.
we spent season after season taking those small moments and analyzing them, creating our own content and meta and theories based on them. but the difference is, with the series finale, the episode was filled to the brim with typical trope-y, emotional moments that, bar the ending, could really only translate into “I choose danny over everything” scenario.
but looking back, now I can pick out the little mcdanno moments and say, with almost full certainty, that they were done intentionally, but with the wrong intentions. and its so easy, now, to look at the finale and say that lenkov had known what he was doing the whole time.
of course, you may say, “oh that’s obvious,” but he still managed to string us along. fuck lenkov.
with regards to the last episode, all of the moments between danny and steve are gorgeous. the praying, hand-holding, the dropping-everything-for-danny, the holding danny’s head in steve’s lap... oh my gosh, it’s straight out of every fanfic I've ever read.
but everything was calculated. every little tiny mcdanno moment throughout all ten seasons was put there for a reason, and lenkov knew what he was doing when he chose all of the aforementioned things to happen, he knew how a majority of his audience would react. and it just feels dirty and slimy, to watch those scenes, even with an objective pair of eyes, because the real purpose behind all of the mcdanno moments were to make us believe we were finally getting what we wanted.
it is truly sadistic, in a way. lenkov knows his audience, and is scarily good at being able to give us exactly what we want. every little thing was calculated, like I had said on another person’s post: think about danny’s injury, and how he was purposely given a cane, and the camera showed him wincing as he got up to hug steve. what about the fact that steve left a week after danny almost died? this makes it impossible for danny to chase after steve, so the moment you see steve on a plane, your heart drops - not because he’s leaving, but because danny has been rendered powerless.
and the small parallel between danny and steve’s hand holding, with steve and c*th’s? the desperation versus the comfort? I mean, it’s all right there!
every little danny/steve moment was chosen, but not to commemorate the 10 years, 10 seasons of partnership and ohana, but to remind the audience that despite all of that development, nothing is more important than a fairytale happy ending, getting the girl and the “peace.” nothing, not even the safety of one’s best friend, family, partner... is as important as getting the girl in the end (remember, everyone knows steve’s weakness is danny, who was, when steve left, barely able to get up from his chair). even if that girl completely abandoned you and betrayed your trust. even if that means the other half of the show, the one who had showed steve the meaning of ohana, had been left without a proper ending, and completely disregarded. but hey, steve got the girl of his dreams in the end, right? that’s what the 10 years of hawaii five-0 were leading towards, right?
as much as I want to enjoy the poetic moments, where steve prays to G-d to take him instead of danny, or every other little moment, I can’t help but remember that we were all duped, manipulated into being passionate about the two of them by way of purposefully curated little moments throughout the 10 years of the show running. I love danny and steve because anything that stems from genuine partnership and found family immediately has me wrapped around its finger, but it doesn't negate the fact that after all that’s said and done, I can confidently say that lenkov knew what he was doing all along. maybe this isn’t news to you - it isn’t really for me, either - but now that the show is over, it couldn’t be more clear, and that’s what scares me. lenkov isn’t hiding it, not really.
I'm not gonna stop loving the show. I dont think most of us will. I just think it’s important to recognize the intention behind all of it, and with that, it makes it harder for me to enjoy the few moments that we do actually have with regards to the finale. I know this is a shitty thing to say, but I felt like I had to say it.

H50 Ask. 2, 4, 45
Thank you so much for the ask, J!
2. Favorite character
Well, that’s easy. It’ll be always and forever one Steve McGarrett. I’m a Steve girl entirely.
4. The character you have no rational reason to dislike but you do anyway.
Lynn Downey - She’s kind. She’s sexy. She has a killer body. She’s intelligent. She has self-awareness and still...I don’t feel the fire. It always seems as if she wants to impress Steve. As if she wants to compete with him, with his past, his former girlfriends, his way to take on life. I always get the impression she’s not comfortable when she’s with Steve as if he was too intimidating but she can’t admit it, not even to herself. The way she makes me feel in the Valentine episode comes close to squirming and wanting to run away. She treats Steve like a...pet? a man who has to learn to wait? I don’t get what she wants.
45.Opinion on Harry Langford
Oh, haha, that’s a good one. He’s this English gentleman with manners, with skills, who can keep up with Steve, who has his own rules and standards and is still someone who goes to the top of the mountains with you. He comes, he sees, he conquers. He has a crush on Danny but only to mess with Steve. He’s an awesome character that completes Steve and Danny as a team guy. He fits in, seamlessly and even Danny likes him. And that’s all it needs. I have always loved Harry in every episode.
Great questions! Yay! l love this game!

For the H50 asks thingy😁10, 18, 26 and 37. Thank you a lot!
Thank you SO Much for asking!
10: favorite episode This is SUCH a hard question. I don’t think I could pick just one. Maybe I can narrow it down... 1x21- The “first date” Hiking episode. Steve taking Danny to the petroglyphs, like his father had taken him. Sharing something so deeply personal. Something cherished from his past. Then the playfulness and heart-eyes between them throughout the rest of the episode.
5x17- The Apartment stakeout episode. So many borderline domestic McDanno feels. Steve was so goofy. The heartfelt moment on the couch where Steve talked about the talent show. 6x13- The Surfing followed by Race back to HQ between The Core!Four. Steve and Danny’s back and forth once they get back to HQ. Steve and Danny’s Smile. The whole “peed in a bottle” bit. Just so fun.
7x19 - The Valentines Day Couple get away. There was SOOO much McDanno bonding and playing around. Poor Lynn and Amber lol. Did they spend any time with them alone?
8x10- Quarantine episode where Danny gets shot. Aside from the emotional roller-coaster of Danny getting shot an then finding the shooter we have Danny’s Dream, which I hold on to, and Steve’s Buzz cut.
9x07- The 1940′s AU. I loved this entire episode. Everything about it. It was funny, fun, and creative.
I am sure that there are other but these are the ones the immediately come to mind.
18: do you remember your first impression about the show? Yes I do. I will fully admit that I started watching it for Alex and Scott. I felt the eye-candy would be worth it. However after the first episode I was hooked.I felt like it was going to fast paced and interesting. Intriguing and fun.
26: favorite McDanno moment Oh this is impossible....Ok gun to my head probably a 50/50 between the first on-screen Mutual I love You after they get out of the building collapse in 4x19 and the hug after Danny is freed from the bomb in 3x06. Steve’s face...the tears, fear, and relief on his face as he looks at Danny.
37: favorite female character I don’t think I can pick just one. I love so many of them. Kono’s boldness, fierceness and gentle heart. Grace simply because I love her. Alicia because she was so badass. Mary was so funny and sweet. Fierce in her own way. Tani was funny, sarcastic and bold.  With the women of H50, for me, it was largely either love or hate with very little middle ground. Really the only ones I’m totally ambivalent toward were Rachel, Lynn, and Amber.
Doing this Thing.

My first McDanno story
Tumblr media
Name: Valentine’s Day in Hawaii (McDanno Story) Summary:  Danny received a mysterious Valentine's card, however much time for figuring out who sent it, he doesn't get when duty calls. Also Steve is acting strange. Would they finally admit what they are truly feeling for each other? This low-key Valentine's day might be the perfect occasion for that..
This is a different version of H50's Valentine's day episode (10x16) focused on McDanno (Steve McGarrett & Danny Williams). There's no supermarket robbery, no case.. Plenty of time for Valentine's day and McDanno argues ;). I got inspired to write something after seeing 10x15's ending. Small warning: This story contains spoilers for the episodes 10x14 & 10x15! And perhaps a bit from 10x16. (haven't seen that one yet because it hasn't aired here yet but I've read/seen some fragments.) If later chapters will contain spoilers from later episodes, I will give a new warning. Story will mainly be written in the POV's of Danny and Steve.

i can’t believe that in 6.14 h50 had a valentine’s day episode where they not only made steve act like that after he learns danny knows lingerie, but then also like. had him stare at danny until danny goes “what” and starts to speculate about what steve’s like in bed, unprompted

a thing that amuses (and frustrates) me to no end about h50: they spend entire episodes showing us how close steve and danny are, as they share literally everything from joy to heartache to the care of danny's daughter and have the time of their lives doing it even when there's a building collapsed on their heads, and then the show inevitably tries to turn around and go "oh, and then danny receives a heterosexual text from his heterosexual girlfriend telling him how much she enjoyed the heterosexual flowers he heterosexually sent, because she's super important to him and he loves her so very much" even as danny is actively spending valentine's day with steve

H50 Episode review - 7.16
There was a lot to love in this episode and some things that well, not so much.  But overall I loved it.   Once again, the writing for this season proves to be much improved over S6.
So let’s get to it.
Ah, the adjoining hotel rooms.  I’ve seen porn films that started out like this.  Dear Penthouse......
Seriously.  The girls want a foursome.  No?  Okay, so they want each other.
And I think they are actually better suited for one another.  Or maybe they want to see some McDanno action, I don’t know.  But moving on....
The whole speech with Danny saying he can’t be romantic with Steve around really cracked me up, right down to the safe word.  Chicken Salad!
There are no words for the volleyball scene and the Top Gun music other than pure perfection.  Right down to Steve spinning the ball on his fingers.  God where is Goose when you need him, right?
Melissa, you have a serious wedgie.  That has to be uncomfortable....
The entire plot with the kid bothered me.  From the beginning, Danny overreacted.  And yea, I get that’s Danny.   But it was unnecessary.  And while I’m here, let me say that Melissa’s reaction once again backs  my theory that she has no interest in kids or having any children of her own.  Yet, another reason I think she and Danny don’t work.
Well my goodness Danny, did you just say “I Love You” in passing to Melissa? Interesting.
Steve really?  Switch teams?  I mean where do I start?  Let’s just take the innuendo aside and take it at face value.  Damn.  You are just as competitive as Danny and that was a low blow to Lynn.  He did win back brownie points for the apology later though.
Is that Dot in the water with the boys?  She is getting some serious screentime!
Okay, here we go with the kid again.  This part REALLY bothered me.  Yes, Danny should have let it go.  But are you honestly going to tell me that two grown men, two LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS are going to let a bratty kid get away with crying wolf on a public beach like that?  Seriously?!
That kid was out of line for that and should have been called out for it.  I can’t believe they didn’t say anything.  Especially Steve.  That surprised me.
But later.... okay so then it’s okay to use your immunity and means to break into the kids hotel room?  Danny, come on!  That whole thing was crap.
Oh, the spa treatment scene was funny.  Steve can’t stop talking.  Danny eats the cucumber.  Steve and his crows feet.  Bahaha.
And then Danny can’t even romance his girlfriend in the end because Steve is staring at him?  *coughs*  Okay, you say so!  Chicken salad!
One last thing about Melissa....
When Danny apologized for being distant during the afternoon and Melissa said it was okay that “she knew what she was signing up for”.  I felt this pang of sadness for her.  Once again I feel like she’s settling.  They both are.
Moving on.....
My Kono!  My precious babe!
You totally rocked it.  That Blake guy was a sleaze and you called him out at every turn.  It was beautiful.
And you said my word!  Douchebaggery!  OMG!  The LOVE!   That is like, my favorite word!  And next to hearing it from Dean Winchester in SPN, I never get to hear it anymore.  I LOVE YOU for that!
Chin was enjoying the show as well.
Are we supposed to believe Kono got a new car?  That’s the same car isn’t it?  Just painted blue?
Okay, guys and their girlfriends, check.  Steve tells Chin he hopes he can spend time with Abby, check.  Lou says he needs to get home to his wife for Valentine’s day, check.
Kono......  *hears crickets*
Aside from her shooting Mr Douchebag down by showing her wedding ring, there’s no mention of Adam.  What the crap?
Anyway, overall I loved it!  Lots of great moments and fodder for fanfics!
Looking forward to more new episodes
