minor headcanons: critters: gamma world state

Temry Mahariel:

The mabari: Lethallin is calm, quiet, and always thinking. He's Kieran's primary babysitter once Kieran is old enough to start toddling on his own. Lethallin is incredibly gentle and patient with Kieran, and he can and will rip out someone's throat for looking at Kieran or Temry wrong. Physically, he's got a Great Dane-y sort of build, being mostly legs, with merle coloring.

The weasel: Nehn has been Temry's pet since they were a teenager. She lives in their pack or their pockets and likes to put in inconvenient appearances. She also likes to try to eat fingers, generally with limited success.

The owl: Atisha is Temry's hunting aid at night. She's a barn owl, and while she's not the most intelligent creature in the world, she is very good at dropping rabbits at Temry's feet, and that's the important part.

The crow: Samahl likes to act as lookout during the day. Temry didn't really train him to do this. He just sort of started doing it after he started following Temry around because they fished him out of a pond and fed him jerky. He's a worryingly clever little thief who likes to collect shiny things. His collection lives in Temry's pack, though, so they're not too concerned about it, even if they do need to fish their wedding ring out of it every other day. They're not entirely convinced Samahl isn't a mage having a laugh, but they suppose they'll never know. He likes to tag team with a shapeshifted Morrigan to cause Antics and Shenanigans.

The fennec: Honestly, Dalen is less a pet and more an unexpected tagalong. He climbed into Temry's pack one day and fell asleep, and stayed unnoticed for probably 18 hours, at which point he decided to stick around.

The hart: Sabrae is an albino hart. He's tall. He's very pretty. He's very majestic. He's also dumb as a post. He's very sweet and very obedient and does exactly as he's asked at all times because if he doesn't then he loses track of where his own ass and head are.

Madry Hawke:

The mabari: Grim is a mountain variety of mabari, which means he's basically a Newfoundland with a nubbly tail. He consists of endless amounts of black hair and slobber. He's very friendly and tends to play dumber than he is. He's still a puppy when the Blight starts, so he's still got enough pep in his step to follow Madry to Skyhold during the Inquisition, even if he is visibly slowing by then.

The horse: Kelpie is an Akhel-teke that Madry steals from some rich fuck on the way out of Kirkwall, because stealing from rich fucks is one of Madry's favorite hobbies, even when the situation is urgent. She's almost entirely black except for a white face and highlighter blue eyes. She looks very alarming coming down the road on a foggy night. She can and will chase someone down to check their pockets for snacks. Madry will make no efforts to contain her enthusiasm.

Petrichor Lavellan:

The dog: Mi'Durgen is a high content wolf/mabari cross. He's worryingly intelligent and can generally be seen visibly weighing the pros and cons of whatever he's being told to do, and tends to ignore anyone who isn't Petra or who Petra hasn't temporarily put in charge of him. He actually makes Petra's trek to find the Inquisition again after Haven gets buried easier, since he's waiting for them outside the cave when they come stumbling out into the snow.

The moose: Some people ride horses. Some ride harts. Some ride dracolisks or nuggalopes or other strange creatures. Petra has a bull moose named Revas. They've had Revas since before the events of Inquisition; together they tended to act as trail breakers for the clan when they were on the move, riding ahead to make sure there was nothing in the way. Revas is generally calm, but with the air of someone holding onto their patience with both hands.

Hey I don't know who needs to hear this but it's not cool to invalidate POC headcanon made by POC by using entomology. We shouldn't need to "prove" or justify our headcanon. If you disagree, keep it to yourself.

Whenever I say that Petra is Hawaiian/Polynesian coded, I always get someone who's like "But Brigid is an Irish word" or "But her last name is Macneary and that's Scottish" Literally shut up, I do not care.

Or when I say Sylvain being Latino is cool and people are like "but Jose is the French pronunciation" shut up!!!!

minor headcanons: weaponry

Caje uses a longsword and a very well reinforced round shield that doubles as a weapon just as much as a defense

Cyrus uses a staff with a long blade on one end and a jasper (dragon's blood, specifically) orb on the other end

Owain uses a staff with a blue crystal spike on one end, framed by a pair of spikes, and a serrated, single-edged blade on the other end. eventually, he also uses a spirit blade

on the field, Aneirin uses a horse bow with a 60-pound draw weight, combined with explosives as necessary. if he's being set up somewhere to act as a sniper, he uses a war bow with a 180-pound draw weight, also combined with explosives as necessary

Darrick uses a short sword and an alarming hunting blade that may as well be a short sword

Rigel switches between short swords, a chain knife, and gas grenades/flasks as the situation demands

Oleander uses a hook sword and a sickle

Temry uses short bow initially, but switches to a crossbow pretty early on. they resort to a boot knife when cornered

Madry uses a short staff with a short, stabbing spike on one end and a large, sharpened hook on the other end. it is used as a melee weapon as often as it's used as a magical aid

Petrichor uses a montante

♡ - romantic headcanons

Petra loves naps. To the extent that she semi-regularly blocks time on her calendar for a power nap if she knows she’s in for a particularly long day. Once Ava realizes this, blankets start appearing on the backs and arms of every chair or couch Ava has ever seen Petra fall asleep on at the warehouse. (Did Ava enlist Nat’s help for picking good blankets? Signs point to yes.) Holland has what is, at this point, a frankly embarrassing number of never-to-be-sent love letters in various states of completion hidden in a shoebox in her closet. These notes (obviously) contain all of her Sappiest Nate Feelings ™️ and would fully expose all the dreamiest romantic parts of herself that she likes to pretend don’t exist (v delusional of her to think they aren’t obvious 😌) on the topic of not-so-secret sappiness, Leila has SO many doodles and sketches of Morgan in her notebooks, the margins of meeting minutes, etc. I know this is probably going to be obliterated by actual canon, but to me, the first time Del says “I love you” to Felix is totally accidental. he does something that makes her laugh so hard her sides ache, and when she catches her breath, she says, “oh, I love you,” out loud without meaning to.

♥ - family headcanons

canon be damned, Leila has a great relationship with her grandparents and has always spent a fair amount of time with them. This has continued into adulthood. She’s especially close with her grandfather, who inspired her love of cooking (and taught her how to make perfect tahdig). Petra doesn’t want a family in the traditional, married-with-kids sense—never has, really, but certainly not in her current line of work! she’s much more flexible on the marriage part than the idea of having kids, though (so, if that were something that were important to Ava or if she proposed, Petra would be fine with it; she just wouldn’t care if they didn’t, either). Despite her stated lack of interest in children, Holland is the one who broaches the idea of adopting the supernatural orphan who ends up at the facility one day after falling through a portal. (this hc is based solely on vibes/a random thought I had literally years ago; my brain latched onto it and now it’s her canon, I cannot explain myself further.) Del snoops for more info on Rook in the Agency’s databases pretty much as soon as she learns he was also a human liaison for Wayhaven. Rebecca won’t talk about him, and she wants to know everything she can (few things frustrate her more than feeling left in the dark).

∇ - old age/aging headcanons I meannnn this is just (im)mortality/Turning vs Not hcs, yes? Because that’s how I’m taking it :D

Delaney thinks eventually becoming a vampire is more or less a no-brainer decision. I’m not sure when she’ll start making any kind of serious plans, but she might be the only one for whom it’s a very clear and definite “yes, this will happen at some point.” A rare instance in which Petra doesn’t make a purely impulsive decision haha. She absolutely wants to see All The Data on success rates, procedural notes, etc. Of all my twc girlies, she’s probably the one with the most practical concerns/considerations re: not staying human. I think she ends up deciding to go for it(?) Leila is another relatively easy “yes, why wouldn’t I?” with the caveat that she has a bit of an identity crisis afterwards — and especially as the ramifications of her decision start to sink in (friends/loved ones aging, etc.). She won’t ultimately regret her decision, per se, but there will definitely be Some Feelings about it! aaaand I genuinely have no idea where Holland will land. She has the most anxiety about it by FAR. She really struggles with wrapping her head around what the realities of living forever would be like, day to day. (Also, she has a deep-seated fear of choosing immortality and having it force her to learn the definitive point at which people (…okay, Nate) stop(s) wanting her around.) She ends up having a number of conversations with Adam, weirdly enough (she’s definitely least close with him, out of all of UB), about most of her concerns, which is a cool bonding opportunity for them.

Dumb hc: hair dyes fairly common in Brigid, Petra's hair isn't naturally magenta, it's a normal natural hair colour. When she learns she's the only person in Fodlan who knows what hair dye is, she just. Stares. At whoever told her.

There is redstone in his eyes and it burns.

Lukas cringed at the burning sting. Ever since their adventure in Crown Mesa where he got chipped and subsequently freed, his eyes have been aching. Not in a ‘I need to cry’ way, but in a ‘there is something physically wrong’ way. 

He wouldn’t be surprised if something was wrong. He barely had time to recover from the whole PAMA ordeal, immediately going along with Harper and entering The Games to find a way home. And even then, it became another thrilling adventure where they almost died (well, he and Ivor did actually die but it wasn’t permanent and, therefore, irrelevant), Jesse once again somehow pulled through, and kicked some butt. Now, they were in the portal network getting the people who were trapped in The Games home.

“--and that's when I yanked PAMA's redstone heart right out, hragh! And the whole thing shut down!"

He winced and glanced at Jesse up ahead. His hands were waving about as he told Axel and Olivia about all the adventures they missed while they were at home. As much as he’d like to chime in, he didn’t really want to talk about or be reminded of PAMA right now. Especially considering he was, well, still in pain from it.

“Man, you guys have had some crazy adventures.” Axel sounded envious. “So many people trying to kill you.”

Understatement of the century, Lukas thought. It was nearly unbelievable, the amount of trouble they always got into. It was almost like they were drawn to it. Or the other way around. Danger was attracted to them. It wasn’t a very comforting thought. Honestly, Lukas would like to settle down and lay low for a while. It’s been at least a few weeks (maybe even a few months; it’s hard to keep track of time in the portal hallway when every different world had its own flow of time) since he’d been home.

“Goodbye, Jesse! Goodbye! Thank you!”

“That all of them?”

Wait a minute. He’s not been home for a while. Which means no one’s been in his house since it’s not in Beacontown. It’s at the edge of the woods. Which means-

“Everyone that wants to go home, anyhow. Except you folks, that is. Can’t believe how many competitors actually want to stay and keep playing the games.”

Dewey, his mind hissed. How could he forget? The poor ocelot must have been lonely. He wasn’t too worried about Dewey starving, however, as the ocelot has proven time and time again that it was very much capable of hunting its own food. But then again, Dewey might have torn the place apart looking for him.

“Thanks to you my intrepid new friend, I can actually work on making them FUN again. Very exciting. It’ll be more challenging just by myself… But a good challenge.”

“It’s what I do - exploring new worlds, helping people wherever I go… I was happy to help.”

A wince. He brought his hand up to rub at his eyes. They come back with traces of redstone dust.

“And I’m gonna help too. You taught me a lot about fairness, Jesse, and I’d like to use that new knowlegde for something good. And speaking of fairness… I think this is yours.”

Lukas blinked up at Slab before he looked at what was being offered to him. His eyes widened; it was his journal, “Oh, man!”

“There was some good stuff in there. I was really moved,” He was barely listening as he flipped through the familiar pages.

“Awesome,” he smiled up at the giant man before he pocketed the book, waving when Slab started making his way elsewhere.

“Huh. Guess he wasn’t so ‘immovable’ after all.”

He couldn’t wait to get home.
