A few quick character studies of my favorite Octopath Travelers to try out a new style

alright fellow octopathers, ive come up with an idea.

if you've ever been apart of the pokemon community, you've probably heard of this thing called a nuzlocke. basically it means that if a pokemon faints in battle, it is considered dead and cannot be used again. so, what if we took this challenge and applied it to octopath?

ive only got so much of it figured out, and im unsure if something like this would even be possible, but heres what ive got so far.

if a character dies in battle, they are permanently dead. they cannot be revived and used again afterwards, so no vivify or revive, olives of life, or support skills that restore the character after death.

to complete the run you must complete your chosen traveler's full campaign without them dying. so for example, if you choose tressa you need to beat all four of her chapters without her dying, but all other travelers are open season. if your chosen traveler dies, it is a permanent game over and means you need to reset.

if you dont have enough living travelers to make a full team of four, you must keep dead travelers corpses with you as party members to fill in the space (lmao), but you still cannot use them.

both games are eligible to play, and whatever game-cheesing strats you can up with are allowed so long as you dont break any of the previous rules.

and that's what ive got! let me know if you have any ideas or end up trying this out, id love to hear what you have to say! octopath 1 is one of my all time favorite games and i've been enjoying 2 a lot so far, and i think a self-imposed challenge like this would be really fun!

my friend asked me what instruments the travellers would play and i thought i’d share here too

ophilia - bells/harp. anything you’d find in a church barring the piano. she does not have the coordination for that

cyrus - he can read sheet music and in theory could teach himself to play probably anything, but that theory has never been put into practice (i think there was official art of him playing the piano? so theres that tho)

tressa - pan flute/piccolo. something small but loud. maybe a travelling troupe of entertainers went through rippletide and she liked the little flute so much that the player taught her how

olberic - drums, maybe horn. war instruments (hah). he can sing. it’s not, like, show-stopping and he only knows marching songs but he can sing

primrose - she probably started to learn the violin but didn’t get very far in that. maybe she learns later with the help of cyrus

alfyn - he’s poor as shit and probably never had the chance to learn to read music or play anything BUT he can play the harmonica and, shockingly, he can make music from it instead of just noise. he can tap out a nice beat with river stones and a stick too

therion - same as alfyn but he might know how to play guitar. he’s not spectacular but he likes it

h’aanit - ocarina/something similar. those little clay bitches that make pretty sounds. she uses them to mimic bird noises but knows a few traditional songs too

osvald - similar to cyrus, he can theoretically play anything but he definitely can play the violin. he thought rita would like it (courting skills: 0. but this was a w on his part)

castti - if she could she forgot. she has a nice voice for singing though

throné - nothing. she never learned nor does she want to, but she hums to herself when shes alone

ochette - she can whistle but like she can whistle. she mimics various animal noises and can copy something she’s heard pretty damn accurately

partitio - you thought i’d say guitar (he can play that too) but NO. fiddle.

agnea - she can play various things but she really likes ukulele and those little hand clickers

temenos - as musical as wet cardboard. he can play the tambourine though

hikari - he can play the flute, but thats limited to traditional songs and he’s not otherwise that interested in learning more

linework for my octopath print back in 2021. i still really love ophilia here -- but she looks a hundred times cooler with all that shading heh

i personally play ophilia like an eternal healing terminal, especially when alfyn's around. saving grace + purifying olive seed = she will never die !
